Product Description
The second edition of this standard work on the subject explains the processes of modern clothing manufacture and describes the equipment used to carry them out. Recent developments as well as established methods are described for cutting, sewing and other methods of joining materials and pressing. Manual, mechanised and automated methods are considered as well as the applications of computer control and robotics to clothing production. Redrawn illustrations improve clarity and many new photographs show new generations of equipment. The book takes account of the increasingly market-driven nature of the industry, as well as technical and economic constraints and the skill requirements of operating in a labour-intensive situation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Apparel Professional
This book is perfect for any student of apparel manufacture. In fact, I think that it is used as a text in some college courses. It is also useful to the future manager/employee of the production side of an apparel firm. Because it makes certain assumptions about your knowledge of generalmanufacturing theory and practices, it is not meant to be an operationalguide for the manufacturing manager but an introductory guide for theperson looking to get an overview of the materials, tools and processesunique to apparel manufacturing.

Carr and Latham take you through thetechnical aspect of the business without getting into the industrialengineering behind it (I don't recall even a single mention of SAM's).Forthis reason I wouldn't recommend it for the seasoned professional.

I mustwarn you that this book will need to be updated shortly. It is alreadybecoming outdated with all of the new synergies between computing andapparel manufacture.

Overall it accomplished its goal. You willdefinately walk away ready to move on to the next level.Well done. (Plusis has a good bibliography at the end)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great detailed review of fashion of the 18th cent.
This is a great book with full page photos and detailed diagrams and information text.Thiscovers about a dozen men and woman's garments from the time period of 1750's to 1790's.

The only points of improvement would be that I want the author to do more garments and more volumes. Also to include more regional and stylistic differences.

This is a great book for research and collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource
If only Linda Baumgarten would write more books like this!

This is one of my favorite costuming books, because its format embraces a lot of different styles and the combination is much stronger than any of them singly. The book presents information both in articles and text-box asides, and uses line drawings and period illustrations as well as photographs and patterns of the actual garments.BEST of all, the book shows clear photographs of the INTERIOR construction of these garments, which is lost in most other books.(Janet Arnold shows a few interiors, but Nancy Bradfield seems to be the best about remembering to include construction.)

I'm so very, very happy that Quite Specific Media decided to bring this one back into print!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Need This Book....
Fortunately, I was able to get it from our library.I guess I'll have to be patient about actually owning it, but anyway....

This book contains excellent information, not only on pattern, but on the textiles used and construction methods on actual garments.I am fascinated with how these period items were put together and amazed at the detail the researchers were able to identify - so much better than iffy descriptions of fashion plates and contemporary paintings. It is also interesting to learn how patterns would've been used with particular textiles, given cost of fabric at the time.(Interesting to me, anyway, I'm a little obsessed.)

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is serious about re-enactment costume, or who just wants to learn more history about how things were made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great details
Does the "DNA" analysis of the clothing so you can get a true picture of each garment as it marched through time. Answers questions I have always wondered. Beautiful pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new classic in costume
Like Janet Arnold's now-classic "Patterns of Fashion" books, this book takes existing museum garments and offers basic scaled patterns for them. It also offers great details about how the garments were original made, tips for using period techniques, and even a few short histories (like the history of pockets). I can't recommend the book highly enough.

The patterns are not, however, for beginning sewers; they must be scaled up to size and then made up in muslin for the best accuracy. However, even beginners can enjoy drooling over these wonderful garments (shown in color and b/w) and learning about period construction. ... Read more

The experimental nature and versatility of surface stitchery should interest quiltmakers, sewers, and fibre artists of all skill levels. Creative options are unlimited with the methods for manipulating fabric surfaces shown in this book, which includes a variety of beginner projects.Amazon.com Review
Frequently, the appeal of a particular sewing project isgreatly influenced by the fabric itself, and the appeal of the fabricis often linked to its visual and physical texture. On theSurface explores a unique approach to embellishing fabric surfaceswith multiple layers of various threads. Even a beginning sewer canmaster the simple technique, which basically requires only astraight-stitch sewing machine, fabric, and thread. Stitching manytimes over the fabric surface and then washing the fabric yieldsfascinating and often complex-looking material, which can be used in avariety of ways. The first half of this well-presented book explainshow to create the fabrics; the second half offers instructions forprojects that utilize these creations in such projects as quilts, pillows, vests, jackets, jumpers, place mats, and accessories. 2-0 out of 5 stars On the Surface - OK
I found this book rather 1-dimensional and not particularly inspiring. There is only 1 basic technique covered in this book, and the examples are all of the "cute, folksy, boxy" variety, for the most part worked in cotton. Examples include cute, folksy, boxy women's clothing; cute, folksy, boxy home-dec items; cute, folksy, boxy girl's clothing...I was hoping to find some more elegant examples, some different techniques, some different textures, some different fabrics used.

The information presented is exhaustive (130+ pages on 1 technique!) and well-written, with nice photos of the author's and other's work, but as an experienced sewer and machine-embroidery enthousiast I find I get the same amount of inspiration and information out of a Threads magazine article - and there have been several on the technique presented in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderfully Creative Approach to Quilting and Sewing
Loved it!This book takes quilting to a higher level, and yet the technique of thread embellishment is quite uncomplicated.I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in a unique approach to quilting or addingan extra dimension to their sewing - a very special book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful technique for creating new textures
This fun book - thanks to Wendy's terrific sense of humor - shows how to create interesting fabric creations from what you have. Enables you to totally change a fabric into something else. Great ideas for using all theexciting threads available now.Only thing lacking is more projects.Hopethere's a sequel. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not enough photos
Ok, maybe I am getting spoiled by all the glitzy full color photo filled books on this topic that are out there. There may be many good ideas in this book, but out of 181 pages, there are only four double-sided pages with actual photos of her work. The other illustrations are hand sketches which appear on nearly every page. Pity the inside wasn't as pretty as the cover. There may be lots of great info here, but I am a more visual person who looks for the eye-candy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic choice, nothing fancy
If you are making basic costumes, without either the time or need for special detailing, this is probably a good choice (I see it as a useful source for high school, college, or amateur theater productions). It doesn't require a lot of experience in pattern drafting, but you'll do better if you have done some drafting--or at least some pattern alterations. If you're looking for detail and authenticity, go to Janet Arnold or Norah Waugh.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very handy book!
This book looks at first to be incredibly simplistic, but first impressions are decieving.
Although the images are basic and there isn't really any information regarding the actual costruction of the costumes, this book is wonderful in that it provides the basic shapes and pieces of such a wide range of garments.
Definitely one for a more experienced costumer, or at least for someone with a bit of pattern drafting knowledge.

I'm very happy with this purchase and can see this book coming in very handy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic costume book .
This is a good basic costume pattern book.Easy to use and patterns are easily redrafted and understood.Good historical references.I recently used it for Ancient Greek costumes (easy), as well as Medieval (good ideas).I know that I will be reaching for this book over and over again whenever I need to costume a historical play.

2-0 out of 5 stars Starter book
A book for someone who is wanting to begin exploring theatrical costume design or production.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Bible for Costume
I found this book around 25 years ago. At that time it didn't have any explinations, only the designs and some general info in the front. I do pre 1660 re-enactment and still use and teach from my well worn copy. I put it in a notebook and lend out sheets to explain how pieces go together. It isn't totally accurate, but it is a starting place for new costumers. It is easier to explain changes to make it accurate from there. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Eye Candy with great techniques
This is an out of print book so if you see it snatch it up!It has wonderful photographs of the different scarves and very concise drawings and directions on how to make the different scarves, but mostly I got it because the techniques can be utilized for any sort of garments (not just scarves).I recently saw one of the contributing designers and she showed us the scarf she had made from the book but was relunctant to really explain her process, well in the book the process is all out there in precise drawings and descriptions.Maybe this book isn't a must have for the serious sewer, but it does make a good addition to anyones sewing library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a How To book!
This books has lots of pictures of beautiful, well photographed scarves; but I was very disappointed in the lack of technical instructions.Even as a moderately experienced semestress, I thought the "instructions" glossed over the difficult parts.I found very little help given in this book on how to make a professional looking scarf.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Scarves--Directions so-so
If you are an experienced seamstress, this is a really nice book. There are many beautiful scarves in it, some with a lot of detail work.

For the rest of us, (who take the machine out occasionally to mend with) the directions are rather confusing. Also, there are only a few scarves that aren't too dressy to wear with jeans for a walk in the park, so you are going to be spending some $$$$ to make most of these designs.

I wanted to give this book three-and-a-half stars. Not for a beginner, but someone who really enjoys sewing would like this book, especially if they like to dress up--see if you can understand the directions first!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very stylish and inspiring book on scarves!
I was excited with the idea of creating my own scarves to accompany the clothes I make. Well this book helped me immensely to experiment with different embellishment techniques and ideas. Linda Lee has selected 13 artists (among them Marcy Tilton, Jane Conlon and Stephanie Valley whose books are among my favorite) each one presenting one or more scarves they made with a different style and a new approach to traditional techniques and materials. The scarves are very beautiful and stylish (!!) and the photographs are so good that many times I just go over them admiring Linda Lee's work.

But this is not just a book full of pictures of beautiful scarves. It is a well organized book comprising six parts each one concentrating on a different traditional approach to embellishing. Each part includes 5-6 different scarves with a list of materials, fabric notes, cutting instructions and full of clear and detailed instructions and illustrations on construction.

The first part of the book is focused on ribbon fantasy including "delicately hazy sheers, iridescent ribbons and open-weave lattices''. The second part of the book is focused on traditional arts including "the art of piecing, applique, cutwork and shadow work". The third part of the book is focused on contemporary interpretations to make interesting scarves by slashing, washing, shrinking etch. The fourth part of the book is focused on beads and baubles. The fifth part of the book is focused on senciled, stamped and stitched techniques to create very beautiful and original scarves. The last part of the book is focused on architectural shapes that are truly fun to make and wear !!

I highly recommend this book to any (beginner, intermediate or advanced) sewer that takes pleasure in creating special accessory pieces!! ... Read more

Customer Reviews (15)

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Book looked good but looks are deceiving. The author claims she makes and sells purses. After reading the book I got the impression that she didn't want to give away her secrets and put bad or mediocre bags in her book. There are no patterns. She puts a small hand drawn shape on the bottom of the page and tells you to make a bag in this shape. However she also gives you instructions which include fabric yardage. How are you supposed to guess what size purse to make from the suggested yardage and small picture. There was one pattern in the back of the book. You're on your own on the others. If you're that good that you can make your own purse from a small aketch, then you don't need this book. Luckily I borrowed this from the library, looked thru it once and immediately returned it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Great
Some of the tips and techniques in here are fine. They're just not anything that you can't get somewhere else... only better (read: with step-by-step illustrations or better narrative instructions).

I've been sewing for almost 30 years, and I sometimes couldn't figure out what the technique was with just a description. Very few construction illustrations, and not one actual photo of a complete bag can be found in this book. And based on the illustrations provided, there are actually no bags that I would *want* to sew... nothing very stylish or trendy or that wouldn't look like something your 12-year-old made in home ec. class. But they all look fairly simple in construction, even if the descriptions are not terribly easy to follow. If you have sewn bags before, I imagine you could figure most of it out or improvise a little something different.

Based on the simplicity factor, I believe the "Sew in an Afternoon" part of the title is correct, even if I don't personally agree with the "Stylish" part.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Designs...Bad Instructions
I have made many, many bags from many different patterns and I can definitely say this book has some of the worst instructions I've come across. The designs are great! And if you're willing to figure out how to put the bags together pretty much on your own...then great! That's what I've done. I've made many of the bags from this book and they've come out beautifully but I've had to do it from what I know...not from the instructions in the book. If you're looking for great designs and know what you're doing, then this is a great book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Some cute bags but bad instructions
I'm a pretty intermediate sewer so most this I can figure out on my own or search the internet for better instructions but I shouldn't have to. No only does this book lack clear instructions on some of its projects, for one of the (the wristlette) the measurements that were supposed to be on one page were actually on another. It took me ages to find them. There are no pictures of the items you are trying to make and the drawings don't do the end result much justice. Also, the very scant and hard to make out line drawings that you are supposed to refer to for instructions are terrible. You can't make them out at all. I would caution any beginning sewer away from this book. There are some cute bags to be made but I doubt very much most people can figure out how to make them. I think this book was rushed in the printing and putting it together. Too bad, I was very excited to get in the mail.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for a novice sewer.
I'm a fairly new at sewing, and I was hoping for photos. Instead, the book provides illustrations of the 'bags' colored in with what looks like watercolors. There are just not enough photos/drawings that provide a step by step for a newbie. ... Read more

As with all books by Maggie Grey, I have found it outstanding.
Anyone who is into any of this type of craft work would benefit from having her books in their collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars itching to try everything
This book contains so many ideas and excellent photos I wasn't sure if I wanted to snatch up assorted supplies and begin trying out some of the ideas or finish reading to see the entire gamut. The photographs are nicely done and add to the text; it is a wonderful book and one I'll spend a lot of time in experimenting.

4-0 out of 5 stars overview+eye candy
Maggie Grey's books are always a delight to the eye. She is so creative and the photos of her work are very high quality. However, this book is not for a beginner in image printing or transfer. It covers a vast range of techniques for printing, stamping and transfer onto paper and fabric, and as a consequence cannot tell you everything you need to know. But the information is clearly written and would help you work through some experiments to find a technique that would interest you. After that you would need to research that technique some more. For those of us who dabble in new ideas, it is a great book to dream with.

1-0 out of 5 stars Out dated - for really old fashioned people!
I gave this book away.... No one wears clothes like these anymore do they?? Nothing stylish, looks like it is from the60's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and a great skirt design, too!
I have purchased several denim design/deconstruct titles and find that each has projects I will never want to make but each has its strengths as well. This one provided a helpful overview of denim in general and a skirt pattern and instructions (swirl skirt) that looked promising. I wanted something wearable, interesting, and unique - one of a kind. Requiring four pairs of jeans to make, it sent me off to the thrift store in search of just the right fourth pair, which I found for a mere $2. It took me about two days to make this skirt - and it turned out so well and I am so pleased with it, that I will now make another. As I prepared to undertake this project, my husband expressed big doubts. He thought it would look amateurish and sloppy. When I tried it on for him, I got the "WOW!" I hoped for. I send heartfelt thanks to Mickey Baskett, the author, and the designer of this skirt, Patty Cox!

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than Most
I find this book better than most on the remake of denim and jean projects. The written and visual instructions are included and present much needed details in project production. I have found some other books on this subject provide only general instructions and sketches and are not suitable for a first time seamstress or crafter to understand. Some of the items in this publication are somewhat dated, but provide instruction and design tools which allow the reader to create thier own projects. Overall the presentation and information provide a good stepping stone to create your own remakes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool Book, Great Ideas.
I thought this whole book was going to be about making my jeans look like the trendy designer jeans in the stores. While it did cover the basic make-up and construction of jeans, and how to make them look "distressed" and "worn", it also had other fun projects to make from those old jeans that just don't fit anymore. I learned a lot about denim that I didn't know before. Although I was a bit disappointed that it didn't tell me how to get the "dirty look" in a pair of jeans like you see in the stores. I will have to find another book for that. My favorite projects have got to be the "both sides bag & the belted jeans bag." If you are looking for a book that has ideas on how to make cool jeans to wear, and cool things to make out of old jeans, then this book is for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lame!
The cover of this book is very misleading. Over 3/4 of the projects are just cheesey imbellishments for jeans, that I wouldn't be caught dead in, and most of the rest of the projects that really ARE making things out of jeans are pretty corny too. I only found 2 that I would even consider making and 1 of those is just the classic "jean seat" purse that everyone knows about already. Don't waste your money on this one. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fabric designed flowers
Upon receiving this book, I have to say I was delighted at first. The projects looked simple enough and the photos were beautiful, but when it came time to actually follow the instructions it wasn't as thoroughly laid out. There's only limited amount of illustrations and all else you kind of have to figure it out on your own. You only see photos of the finished product and not the working steps.
I will definitely have to play around alot to find out what the "tricks" are in order to complete the flowers and get results as the author does.

I feel that this book may be deceiving to the novice crafter who may need the steps laid out. It's a book that if you paid full price you'd be disappointed. Buy it used or at a reduced rate, therefore you wont be disappointed as much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Creative but needs more detail
Great ideas, but each flower should have had it's own detailed instructions, instead of having to go back to another flower to do the basics.Good as a jumping off point, but wouldn't recommend for a beginner sewer, for example.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Step-By-Step for Beginners
I read the reviews on how great this book is and honestly...I disagree (I too should have read the negative ones..when will I learn?!).I think it's a beautiful book with great photos of the finished flowers but the instructions are simply too vague for a beginner like myself to understand.I have to agree with M. Allred that step-by-step photos along with instruction would have been preferred over all the other photos. And like T. Davis, I just printed out my return label and I'm sending it back. The description gave me the impression this was a how-to book and it's not.If you're new to crafting flowers, I would look elsewhere as this is NOT a step-by-step guide at all - esp. for a beginner :(

3-0 out of 5 stars Kind of neat
This book is kind of neat.Lots of nice illustrations/pics, and instructions, but nothing that I didn't know already.I ended up giving this book to a co-worker who isn't as sewing-craft experienced and SHE really loved it, which makes me think this is a so-so book for an experienced crafter and a super one for a newbie!

1-0 out of 5 stars Awesome...until you actually go to make one
I loved this book until I went to my local (national chain) copy store today.I planned to have them print out a bunch of the patterns (which have been included in the book as scaled miniatures of the real pattern).Just to print out ONE would have cost $7.And I already purchased the book!25 aprons at $7 a pop adds up to $175.

Moreover, on some pages they've done stupidly frustrating things, like on one page three pieces are enlarged to 398%, 402%, and 396%SERIOUSLY?!!If they are on the same page and belong to the same pattern, they should all be the same. And something round like 400%.

This book has a lot of beautiful aprons, but thanks to the publishers attempts to cut corners, it's worthless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun aprons.
I liked this book. However I was disappointed to find that the aprons used bias tape to finish most edges. I'm not very good at that and I had some trouble getting a nice finish. Guess I'll have to practice more!
The text about the aprons was entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like aprons or sewing, this is the book for you!
I just received my book after researching several apron books on the market. This is the best one I have found. The aprons are posh, fun and versatile. The directions and instructions really clear (if you have a little sewing experience), and the pictures are worthy of framing and hanging on the wall! There arealot of apron books on the market, and in my opinion, this one tops them all!

3-0 out of 5 stars GREAT DESIGNS-horrible instructions, and expensive pattern enlarging
First off the positive-CUTE CUTE CUTE aprons.I could make anyone of them and keep or give as a gift.BUT beware that you have to enlarge ALL PATTERN PIECES by 400%.One of my favorites-the Josephine- cost $9 to enlarge the apron front because it had to be printed on drafting paper. Then come the instructions.DO NOT GET THIS IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER unless you have an experienced person to help you through the project to read ahead and make notes for you in the book.Be aware that pattern pieces will change names throughout instructions-ie "Neck Straps"become "Ties" which is confusing with "Ties" for waist ties, and the drawstring which is also become "Ties".The aprons can be made,it just takes more time deciphering the instructions than actually making the apron. For the author: I would suggest having the patterns tested by a few people next time-and I do hope there is another book-before having it printed, and it would be nice to have patterns included with the book.I would much rather pay $24-$28 for a book with patterns-like Amy Butler, or Anna Maria Horner, orFrench General than pay $18 for a great book, but then have to pay another $20-$30 to have all the pattern pieces-no to mention the extra time alloted to make it down to the copy store.

1-0 out of 5 stars A is for AWFUL!!!!
UG this book is just awful the aprons are all so cute I wanted to get started on them right away. I quickly scanned the patterns and then printed them out and pieced them. Then i took my lovely 9 dollar a yard amy bulter and free spirit fabric trying to make the summertime blues apron. Even though i have over 20 years sewing expierence all the kings horses and all the kings men could not make this pattern go together again. I have never had such a time with any pattern, i even often design my own patterns...so i thought i might be able to fix this one. Nope my husband the math major was also at a lose on how to fix it so i picked out my stitches.... thinking i would turn my now mess of scraps into a half apron i tried that next...kaleidoscope.....also didn't turn out correctly either nothing lined up, following the directions you will have the wrong sides showing... I ended up losing the pleated waist band and making a very basic apronwith what scraps remained from my 56 dollars in supplies!
I could have made that half apron that i ended up making without the book using just my cutting board and cutting wheel and a design in my head.
Don't waste the money on this book, unless you just check it out for the cute fabric combos that is about all it is good for, i can so see something who is just beginning to sew crying over the incrediable waste of fabric and thinking they can't do anything right. I do not understand why all these patterns/directions were not tested by someone before printing. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This fourth edition of Metric Pattern Cutting for Children’s Wear and Babywear remains the standard text book but has three majorimprovements.

First, the sections have been re-organised to reflect changes in producing and marketing children’s clothes. Today’s popularity of easy-fitting styles and knitted fabrics means that basic ‘flat’ pattern cutting is used to construct the majority of children’s wear and babywear and this type of cutting is therefore emphasised in this new edition. Shaped blocks and garments, cut to fit the body form, are still included, and are placed in chapters covering some school uniform garments or more expensive fashion or formal clothes. The book now clearly separates the sections useful to student beginners (Parts One, Two and Three), and also offers more advanced or specialist sections for students who wish to pursue a career in children’s wear or for designers working in the different manufacturing sectors of the trade.

The second change in this fourth edition is the introduction of colour coding to the sections; this makes it easier to identify specific processes in the book and enhances the illustrations.

Finally, the size charts have been revised to reflect the changes in body sizing. The clear division of the boys’ and girls’ measurements in the charts has been in response to the way clothes are marketed and to co-ordinate with European size charts. ‘Plus’ charts for heavier children have also been added. ...
