Product Description
Discourse about the relationship between seasons and human mood has a substantial history in medicine, the arts and the social sciences . Over the last decade, this perennial topic has been dominated by the construct of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). SAD is a psychiatric syndrome characterised by depressions which recur at the same time each year, typically winter (Rosenthal et al, 1984b). SAD is typically understood as the extreme end of a continuum of normative seasonal variation in mood and behaviour (seasonality). The research reported here had four interrelated aims. The first aim was to test for the existence of seasonality in human mood (as defined by SAD). It can be argued that this topic is both important and potentially fruitful. Seasonality is critical for the validation of SAD itself: it has been proposed that the most important unresolved issue of SAD research is the definition of seasonality. Furthermore, seasonality is a scientifically interesting construct, because it implies a unique trait of mood variability in the context of environmental changes. As such, the investigation of seasonality provides a test of current understandings of the relationship between personality, mood and affective vulnerability. The second aim of the research, therefore, was to situate seasonality in the nomological web of trait constructs. The third aim was to test a novel hypothesis about the psychobiology of the trait of Neuroticism, a hypothesis that derived from the integration of seasonality into the nomological net of personality constructs. The key dependent variable in the research was mood, and therefore a fourth aim was to investigate a contemporary model of mood by testing the hypothesis that a Positive Affect system is partially driven by biological rhythms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For those who need a silly book
I read the two other reveiws and I'm guessing this is in the "I love it" or the "I'd leave it on the shelf" kind of book.I bought it for my wife a year ago and she picks it up again and again. It is a very silly book. The stars are for those without enough silly in their lives. It's a good laugh and I'd like to see another like it.It is worth every smile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Jump! The Northwest Winter Blues Guide
Where are all the stars coming from?I bought this book, and I was highly dissapointed.I was looking for useful information on diet, light therapy, vitamins, etc. that would actually help you survive the real winter blues - seasonal attitude diplacement disorder. This book was written for someone who doesn't have a life and needs to be told stupid little things to do to keep from being bored. All you 5 star people - get a life!P.S. If you look real hard you might find vitamin info in a one liner somewhere in this book.Otherwise it's mostly nonsense.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Winter Reading
I saw this book in an on-campus bookstore and was feeling impulsive. It turned out to be a wonderful investment. I have seasonal affective dissorder and reading the lighthearted tips and observations of this winter blues survival guide made me a happy lass. I liked it so much that when I accidently left it in a school cafeteria I had to run out and buy another one right away. :)Alli Arnold's illustrations are fabulous, as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From Kliatt, Volume 34 Number 6, November 2000
This informative and entertaining book about recent discoveries surrounding ten types of brain abnormality is the result of collaboration between a Ph.D in cognitive science and the founding editor of Games magazine, Bragdon and Gamon look at topics that will interest most readers (and personally touch many): ADHD alcoholism, autism, dèjá vu, dyslexia, handedness, perfect pitch, photographic memory, seasonal affective disorder, and synesthesia. Sidebars, whimsical illustrations, brain diagrams, reader "tests", and "where to learn more" sections at the end of each chapter all make the book reader friendly and enticing. Although the book is aimed at older readers -especially teachers and parents(e.g., the section on photographic memory contains a visual test entitled, "Is your child and eidetiker?") some middle schoolers will be intrigued by pertinent sections. (This reviewer's 6th-grade son, a lefty, was fascinated by the section on southpaws-although mildly disturbed by the notion that left-handedness is due to an atypical brain condition.) While presenting lots of fun facts, the book also manages to convey a great deal of solid brain research.

From the author: Previous studies have identified a specific behavioral effect on stock market returns worldwide that they attribute to seasonal depression among a significant subset of investors. We reexamine this notion in a unique arena, Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), and find further evidence of such an influence. Specifically, we find an asymmetric return pattern throughout the fall and winter months that is similar to that previously documented in traditional equities. This result is primarily driven by the smallest REITs, however, which may reflect their similarity to traditional equities. Further, we find the influence of seasonal depression remains following the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1993, when a large portion of REIT investors were institutional. Our results provide further evidence of a distinct psychologically driven influence in stock market returns.

Description:
Previous research has documented robust links between seasonal variation in length of day, seasonal depression (known as seasonal affective disorder, or SAD), risk aversion, and stock market returns. The influence of SAD on market returns, known as the SAD effect, is large. We study the SAD effect in the context of an equilibrium asset pricing model to determine whether the seasonality can be explained using a conditional version of the CAPM that allows the price of risk to vary over time. Using daily and monthly data for the US, Sweden, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, and Australia, we find that a conditional CAPM that allows the price of risk to vary in relation to seasonal variation in the length of day fully captures the SAD effect. This is consistent with the notion that the SAD effect arises due to the heightened risk aversion that comes with seasonal depression, reflected by a changing risk premium. ... Read more
