5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful adventure for momma and baby.
This gorgeous book is highly recommended. The illustrations are breath-taking and the tale is sweet and tender.Joshie Otter ventures off by himself looking to play but finding no one among the various animals of the Aleutian Islands who is interested.Suddenly he realizes that he has swum too far from home and doesn't know how to get back.Over the waves he hears his mother's voice singing to him and, guided by her song, he finds his way home. The words and music for the song are included at the end of the book. This is a sweet bedtime book for any baby and would be an especially wonderful gift for a little boy named Josh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story
This is a beautifully written story, complete with it's own song and music, about a little otter who strays from his mother, and how she calls him home with song.A soothing, delightful bedtime story. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Long admired by nature lovers and marine scientists, the sea otter is extraordinarily well adapted to the sea, where it can spend an entire life span eating, sleeping, giving birth, and rearing its young without ever coming ashore. Richly illustrated, The World of the Sea Otter is both an authoritative natural history and a visual celebration of this playful creature.

"This book is a work of art -- from the attractive format, to the superb color photos, to the clear writing ... the love that both author and photographer obviously have for their subject makes this book a delight to any reader.... Highly Recommended" -- The Book Report

"This graceful weaving of text and photography combines the natural history of the sea otter with the story of the species' struggle for survival.... The end result is a call to action for this endangered species." -- Animals

"The World of the Sea Otter is both a scientific look into the life of the sea otter and a pictorial showcase of the creature's habits, hunting methods, and social behavior, including its fight for survival."

5-0 out of 5 stars Otterly fascinating
This beautifully illustrated book tells us plenty about the smallest sea mammal. It begins by showing some wonderful pictures of sea otters and telling about their ultradensely furry waterproof coats.A sea otter can wander onto land, but it is very clumsy out of the water. It may spend its whole life in the sea.

About 300 years ago, there were over 150,000 sea otters, maybe twice that many. But there was extensive hunting which reduced the population to one or two thousand. In 1911, the remaining ones were protected under the Fur Seal agreement. Now, the population is back to 150,000.They tend to live off the California coast, off Vancouver Island, off the Aleutians and off the Kuriles.

Sea otters don't like deep water, because they want to find food on the sea floor. And they prefer a depth of only about 75 feet, although they can dive twice that deep.We get to see photos of sea otters at lunch, and of some of the food available to them.

We also are told of how the sea otter has fared in its interactions with humans. We've hunted them, and threatened them with atom bomb tests and oil spills. But now they seem to be doing better.I think it would be a terrible shame if we were unable to protect these marvellous creatures.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best popular book available on the loveable otter
This book is very well researched and clearly written. However, it is the photography which makes it a masterpiece. Jeff Foott's pictures are incredibly sensitive and perceptive. He takes the reader not only into the nature of the otter itself, but also into the milieu of Monterey Bay with it's abundant food supply, opportunities for procreation, and human and non-human hazards. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ollie the Otter is the best book I've ever read- Brianna Rose Salkow
Dear Grandpa,
Ollie the Otteris about an otter who lived in the ocean before he got captured by a fisherman named Red Beard. Red Beard gave the otter to Kris, she works at an aquarium with otters,a sea turtle, and one bird named Bingo. The otters names are Sadie, Ollie, Fuzzy, and Browner and they also have one walrus named Fnadago. One day the animals set off to the deep dark sea along the way they met a swordfish, two jellyfish, and one great white shark named Tooth. Will the animals survive against the shark, the jellyfish and the swordfish? I don't know you'll have to find out for yourself.I certainly think that Ollie the Otter is the best book I've ever read.

Love,
Brianna

5-0 out of 5 stars Ollie the Otter is fun!
My 6 year-old son really enjoyed this book and now says it is his favorite!I enjoyed reading it to him.Ollie is a teenage otter with attitude. He doesn't always listen and this gets him into an adventure with his other animal friends. The book may be for ages 8 and up, the it reaches a broader age range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ollie the Otter
Ollie is a wonderfully uplifting and positive character that I found to be great for kids. His adventures are truly original and the friends he makes along the way are very memorable. This book is exciting, funny, informative and fast moving. Dive in and hang on for a good long swim.

5-0 out of 5 stars Warm blooded applause for Ollie the Otter
I thoroughly enjoyed this book!My primary goal in reading Ollie the Otter was to review and approve its content for my young son.I soon found myself in tears of laughter in several very colorful scenes. The animals in the story have rambunctious and vivid personalities which stand in stark contrast to the animal stories that I read as a child 30 years ago.I had a series of pink books (don't recall the author) that contained individual adventures (volumes) of a bear, squirrel, muskrat, and field mouse, but none compare to Ollie!I have taken the liberty of sending copies to my friends for their children to enjoy. ... Product Description
The story of Bodach, Palethroat and Pinknose unfolded to Bridget and Don MacCaskill over a period of 12 patient years. Slowly, the wild otters became accustomed to the scent of the humans around their remote Highland sea loch, and the couple were able to observe the habits and behaviour of these beautiful creatures. Cubs are born and grow up with their parents, and the otters regularly encounter other animals, sometimes with amusing results. Whatever the event, Bridget and Don are there with pen and camera, ready to record the details. "On the Swirl of the Tide" is a vivid and intimate portrait of the lives of otters in the wild, part of which was shared with the cameras for Central Television's "Nature Watch" series. The beautiful colour photographs from Don MacCaskill reveal details never before shown, and Bridget's sympathetic writing of the lifestyle and behaviour of these wild creatures is an enchanting account of otter life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
For anyone who appreciates these curious, gentle and interactive creatures, this book is a joy to read. There is conspicuously little written about otters, mainly due to their reclusive nature. As mankind encroaches upon their habitats more and more, it is essential that we seek greater insight into their lives. The McCaskills have created one of the only books about otters that is non-technical, depicting the otters' lives with realism, compassion, and the respect and consideration that they are not often given. It reads like a novel, and is based upon many years of first-hand observation. ...
