5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it from the source
Don't be ridiculous, buy this book from the AAM Bookstore, where it sells for $45 to members and $65 to nonmembers. But actually, don't buy it at all, because the third edition will be out in March 2010.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good registration guide
this book contains sections written by a number of experienced, top registrars at museums across the nation.they know their business, and although the methods will doubtless vary from museum to museum, it gives agood overview (although a few of the authors do go into painful detail) ofthe registration process.for the most part it's a great book on ahard-to-find subject. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Available in hardback from The Museum of Science and Industry
It is important to note that this book which is available through Amazon, is a hardcover edition.I just purchased what I thought would be a paperback edition through the Museum of Science and Industry, since it was less expensive, and was surprised to receive a hardcover edition. I don't know if there are any differences in editions. I've never found any book that costs more on Amazon before. However, the book is a beautiful tribute to the history of the fairy castle itself, Colleen Moore, and the beautiful design, architecture, and history of the pieces which make up this wonderfully enduring experience that I share with so many women who were first introduced to it as a child. Every architecture and design student should see it as well. The only disappointment is that there isn't a good photo of Cinderella's coach in the garden, and that is one of my strongest childhood memories of the castle.

5-0 out of 5 stars STOP!!! Read this before buying here!!!
I live in the Chicagoland area and was just at the museum today. As expected, the dollhouse is as amazing as it was when I was a little girl.I saw this book in the gift stop.IT ONLY COSTS $24.95!!!Please, please don't pay these people double what the book actually costs!Go to the Museum of Science and Industry's website at http://site.msishops.com/books.html and look for the book at the bottom of the page.I'm sure there's shipping that's not included. There might even be tax, but it'll no doubt still be cheaper than paying these people $50-$60 for the book. What a rip-off!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The World's Ultimate Dollhouse
When I was 7 years old, my mother, grandmother and a cousin of mine went to Chicago, and one of the places we went was the Museum of Science and Industry. Before we went, my mother told me that as a young girl, she had seen the fairy castle when it toured the country before becoming a permanent exhibit at the museum. She told me how much she loved it, and I couldn't wait to see it. I was not disappointed. This IS the ultimate dollhouse. Every time I go to the museum, you can't get me to leave without seeing the fairy castle.I took my own daughter to see it, and now she loves it, too. The last time we went, I found this wonderful book at the gift shop, and was thrilled that now I could look at my beloved fairy castle whenever I wished. This book is a real treasure, with beautiful pictures of the castle. Anyone who loves dollhouses, and the fairy castle in particular, will love this book. It never fails to provoke happy memories for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fairies Live Here!
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the castle in Chicago, and can hardly find the words to say how magnificent it was! Still, in the time I had to view it, so many details were missed. That is why this book is so great. It not only displays the castle with better lighting, it gives you a chance to savor all the tiny details you might never have seen. There is also some wonderful biographical information on Colleen Moore herself. A must for miniature lovers, little girls, and dreamers everywhere! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reveals the wonders of museums!
Reviewed by Brianne Plach (age 9) for Reader Views (5/07)

Why do we have to go to the museum anyway? That sounds like a boring field trip! You have probably said it yourself. A museum isn't as much fun as going to a water park, stadium or a state park. What lies within the museum's walls have a history all their own. Lee Bennett Hopkins has selected a wide range of poems about museums in this collection. "Behind the Museum Door" talks about things like a suit of armor, mummies, Native Americans, forms of art and a whole bunch more.

Stacey Dressen-Mc Queen has brought every poem to life with her bright colors and children smiling and enjoying each part of the museum. "Behind the Museum Door" would be a great addition to primary-grade classrooms to help introduce the children to a museum experience before going on a field trip. This book is written for younger kids than this reviewer but it's an enjoyable book for young children.

You never know what exciting things can lie within the museum walls. Reading the book "Behind the Museum Door" is almost as much fun as discovering what lies behind the museum's door.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hodgepodge of poems written by such diverse and lauded individuals
Behind the Museum Door: Poems to Celebrate the Wonders of Museums is a hodgepodge of poems written by such diverse and lauded individuals as Jane Yolen, Myra Cohn Livingston, and Rebecca Kai Dotlich, and illustrated with unforgettable acrylic and oil pastel artwork by award-winning artist Stacey Dessen-McQueen, all celebrating the treasury of knowledge, wisdom and wonder in museums. Each two-page spread features a different poem and theme, in this lovely read-aloud anthology that makes the perfect souvenir for a child's museum visit. "Stirring Art: Beauty / suspended in / suspense. // A breath of air / awakens / lifeless form - // See / it / dance."

4-0 out of 5 stars Behind the Museum Door
Behind the museum door: poems to celebrate the wonders of museums
Selected by Lee Bennett Hopkins and illustrated by Stacey Dressen-McQueen.

Previously published and new poems by the likes of Myra Cohn Livingston, Lilian Moore, Jane Yolen, and J. Patrick Lewis celebrate the many treasures found in museums. Lee Bennett Hopkins starts with his poem, Behind the Museum Door that lists some of these treasures: "Ancient necklaces, African art, armor of knights, a peasant cart", and all these objects are vibrantly illustrated in a two-page spread.

Beverly McLoughland in her poem, Suit of Armor pens:

In its human shape
of molded steel,
It looks as though
There's someone real
Inside. You Knock:
"Hello in there,"
And hear a dull
Echo of air
As though a voice
Were drifting through
The lonely centuries
To you.

A girl stares wonderingly at the suit of armor and in the background a knight on a horse fights a dragon.

Another poem, Stirring Art shows multicultural children dancing underneath a mobile.

Beauty
suspended in
suspence.

A breath of air
Awakens
Lifeless form--

See
it
dance.

O Trilobite by Alice Schertle is an ode to these little microscopic creatures. She begins her poem with:

O trilobite, there are a few,
here in the Fossil Room, of you.
Once billions strong you ruled the sea,
A Cambrian Age majority.

Trilobites swim across a dark page surrounding the words that are set against a teal background. Multicultural children, although their facial expressions are not very distinctive from one another, reveal in posture their pleasure as they point excitedly to exhibits; some children hold hands or stand with their arms across the shoulders of their friends. These twelve poems encourage an appreciation for the wonders of museums. They can be read aloud, however; there often is a bit of clutter in the illustrations that requires closer examination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
As a History of Technology student, I find this book everything I could hope for in a compellation. It examines a great deal of information, but each innovation gets its own pages. This allows the reader to pick it up read about the importance of an innovation and its impact on society and then put it down. This book skips the somewhat tedious (I am not saying unimportant!) development facts of the innovation and personal story of the inventor.
The book also has a great deal of color pictures. You may scoff (as some of my professors have) but pictures of mechanical devices can give a very clear picture of how it works.
I think the book is a great addition to any person's collection that is interested in technology. ... Read more

Through a range of case- studies, including studies from the UK, North America and Australia, this book moves away from the idea that museums are always 'conservative' to suggest they have a long history of engaging with popular culture and addressing a variety of audiences. The book also analyses links between museums and the media, looks at the role of museums in cities and discusses the effects on museums of cultural policies. ... Read more

Product Description
The collection of natural mineral crystals housed at the Houston Museum of Natural Science is the finest and best known in the world. Now the treasures of this singular collection are shown in resplendent photographs that will seduce both the connoisseur of beauty and the student of natural history.

The spectacular and rare specimens on display here, from a huge imperial topaz crystal weighing more than 2,000 carats to a crystallized gold cluster that is one of the most highly coveted objects in the mineral kingdom, are true masterpieces, the Rembrandts and Picassos of the natural world. Like fine art, minerals are prized for their aesthetic qualities-color, luster, sculptural composition-and for their provenance. Avidly pursued by naturalists throughout the centuries, precious metals and gem crystals have a fascinating history. Stories regarding the pursuit and discovery of these precious natural objects, including tales of good luck and hardship, are related in these pages. Essays that explore connoisseurship in the mineral kingdom and chronicle the history of this noble pursuit add to the appeal of this unique volume.AUTHOR BIO: Wendell E. Product Description
During the past decade a number of individual museums have found imaginative ways of using their collections and of making them accessible. However, museum collections as a whole are enormous in size and quantity and the question of how can they can be put to best use is ever present. When conventional exhibitions can only ever utilise a tiny proportion of them, what other uses of the collections are possible? Will their exploitation and use now destroy their value for future generations? Should they simply be kept safely and as economically as possible as a resource for the future?

Fragments of the World examines these questions, first reviewing the history of collecting and of collections, then discussing the ways in which the collections themselves are being used today. Case studies of leading examples from around the world illustrate the discussion. Bringing together the thinking about museum collections with case studies of the ways in which different types of collection are used, the book provides a roadmap for museums to make better use of this wonderful resource.

Product Description

In the last decade, museums all around the world have been reinventing themselves. They are now much more than scholarly, cultural archives. A remit to reach out to a broader public, the increasing politicisation of the ownership and curation of objects, the architectural expectations of new buildings, the requirements of the "event exhibit"all have changed the way any new museum is built, operates and serves its public purpose. Museums now reflect global economics and local politics. New museums now shape our public culture. Illustrated with a very wide range of museums and museum spaces - from MOMA in New York to the reconstruction of Ground Zero, from the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington DC to the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, from the planned renewal of the Crystal Palace site in London to the Sendai Mediatheque in Japan - the book reveals how the new museum is evolving as a cross-disciplinary, self-consciously political, and often avowedly self-reflexive institution.

Product Description
This volume documents the growing trend for cities and towns throughout America to use museums and libraries as vehicles for economic development. Museums of all types and sizes, and libraries from main street behemoths to neighborhood branches, are being used to stimulate inner-city revitalization as well as neighborhood renewal programs. These public amenities draw citizens, tourists and new development to a city's venues, providing a public place for people to focus and gather. In short, the small public investment paid for these cultural centers is much less than the dollars returned to taxpayers from tourism and economic development.

This collection of essays presents case studies from Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Brooklyn, Charleston, Christchurch, Cincinnati, Denver, Des Moines, Hartford, Germantown, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Lanark, Little Rock, Memphis, Minneapolis, Miramar, Pekin, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Portland, Prince Rupert, St. Louis, St. Paul, San Jose, Seattle, Tacoma, Tallahassee, Toronto, Valencia, and Wakefield. The case study topics include the role of museums and libraries in promoting urban renewal and downtown redevelopment, revitalizing urban centers, enhancing "smart communities," influencing eco-friendly municipal construction trends, and stimulating private development. The work includes several regional and national resource directories, a glossary, and an index to facilitate reference to particular communities and projects throughout the country. ... Read more

Product Description
The Whipple Museum in Cambridge contains one of the most important existing collections in the history and philosophy of science and has played a key role in teaching and research within those subjects. Founded in 1944 with funding from Robert Stewart Whipple, formerly of the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company, the Museum aims to preserve the material culture of science through its collections,to document and provide access to those collections, and to interpret and research the material culture and associated practices of past science. This volume brings together 23 essays and 85 illustrations which chart the Museum's history; examine its role and influence within the University of Cambridge and the study of the subject more widely; and focus on a range of particular scientific instruments in the collection, drawing out their broader historical significance and associations. ... Product Description

This important reference volume introduces readers and researchers to the treasury of printed and manuscript resources available in Irish libraries, archives, and genealogical centres. Although it is aimed principally at the Irish Diaspora—amounting to some 70 million people around the globe who can trace their ancestry back to Ireland— Irish and non-Irish researchers alike should find the book of inestimable value for their research anywhere in Ireland. It will acquaint the user with the valuable and accessible collections in Irish repositories. Essential information on operating hours,
contact information—including names, addresses, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail and website addresses—access and service information, descriptions, and the location of these repositories will prove to be immensely practical.

A number of features also enhance the value of the book as a work of reference. The entries are arranged alphabetically by city or town within county, and a separate list, arranged alphabetically by type of institution, is provided for added convenience. There are lists of publications, a detailed glossary and bibliography, and an extensive index. For family and local history researchers, a brief history and description of the Irish Genealogical Project is provided along with a helpful introduction to tracing one’s ancestors. Of special interest are the vital reference details for each parish in Ireland for the crucially important tithe and valuation reocrds from around 1830 in the record offices in Belfast and Dublin. The guide also provides information of practical benefit to academic researchers; professionals in the area of business, education, marketing, medicine, law, and technology; and vacationers interested in learning about local resources available to them during their stay in Ireland.
