Product Description
Seven controversial approaches to schiophrenia, each assuming a distinctive model, biological, psychological, or social, are presented by their leading exponents. Arnold and Edith Buss deal with such fundamental issues as: What is the nature of schiophrenia? What general approach does each theory represent? What does each theory assume, what evidence does it require for proof, and what follows if the theory is correct? While the various approaches covered here have many differences and few similarities, they are not all mutually contradictory, and several may be combined into a larger synthesis. From a biological point of view, schiophrenia is a disease like any other, originating in heredity, tissue malformation, and physiological abnormality. The biological approach is represented here by a theory focusing on genetic and neurological aspects. The psychological approach treats schiophrenia as a failure of adjustment. Within this framework there is considerable disagreement. One theory emphasies the cognitive problems of perceiving, thinking, and problem-solving; another centers on motivational disturbance, with its attendant problems of anxiety and withdrawal; and two theories focus on regressive behavior.Schiophrenia provides a stimulating basis for discussion by presenting the etiology of schiophrenia in terms of the most significant contemporary approaches. The juxtaposition of these viewpoints enables the professor to maximie students interest as well as their insight into the complexity of contradictory evidence and opinions. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book - it's a con.
I received an email from amazon several months ago inviting me to pre-order this book which was due to be published in August 2008. I am doing a Masters which focuses on psychosis and have bought many similar titles. It sounded ideal. Seven approaches to schizophrenia, clearly and expertly explained. What the publishers and amazon fail to tell you is that book is actually 39 years old. It is completely out of date and utterly irrelevant. If it was a republished masterpeice by Searles, Laing or Perry it might be of interest. But it is not.It is compeletly beyond me why anyone would want to publish this or why anyone would want to read it.It's like 'Seven approaches to cancer' from 39 years ago - who would be interested in that except medical historians?Rip off, rip off, rip off. Waste of time and money. Very dissapointed with amazon. ... Read more

Product Description
The association between disturbances in water balance and schizophrenia has long been recognized and heavily researched. Water Balance in Schizophrenia represents the first attempt to provide clinicians with a consolidated guide to polydipsia-hyponatremia, associated with schizophrenia. Here, some of the foremost experts in the field address a variety of issues pertinent to both researchers and clinicians. The first portion of the book focuses on the history of polydipsia-hyponatremia and related conditions. Subsequent chapters are devoted to recent research developments that range from the cellular physiology of thirst and water homeostasis to the behavioral determinants of polydipsia. Additional chapters address recent findings and their implications for understanding schizophrenia. The final portion of the book confronts the problem of clinical management, stressing both behavioral and pharmacological techniques. All clinicians who treat schizophrenic patients will find Water Balance in Schizophrenia an indispensable reference. Whenever possible, the editors provide details regarding methodology and explicit management guidelines. They even include a detailed description of an inpatient polydipsia unit, as well as a comprehensive review of drug treatment. ... Product Description
Schizophrenia is being increasingly viewed as a neurological disorder. The Neuropsychology of Schizophrenia addresses the key questions in modern schizophrenia research. How do abnormalities of the brain produce the characteristic signs and symptoms of this most severe and mysterious mental malady? Where are these abnormalities? How do they develop? How can we detect them? What clinical and cognitive effects do they have?
This new book is the first of its kind to tackle these questions in a systematic way from a number of allied perspectives: from phenomenology to physiology, animal behaviour to metacognition and from PET scans to paper and pencil tests. A number of authors from the United Kingdom and the United States have made contributions; all are acknowledged experts in the field. The chapters each contain a concise review of the particular topic, empirical data and also a theoretical overview.
The Neuropsychology of Schizophrenia will be required reading for all serious students of schizophrenia from both medical and psychology backgrounds. ... Read more

Product Description
In Phenomenology and Lacan on Schizophrenia, Alphonse De Waelhens provides a clear summary of Lacan's theory of schizophrenia, as Lacan derived it from his commentary of Freud's study of the Memoirs of Schreber. De Waelhens also shows how Lacan's understanding of the schizophrenic as having a defective relation to language can also explain four other characteristics of schizophrenic behavior: the fragmented body image; lack of realistic evaluation of the world; so-called bisexuality; and confusion of birth and death. Third, De Waelhens gives a Hegelian interpretation of the pre-Oedipal experience of the child. He makes use of Freud's study on his grand-child using a bobbin and later the words fort-da (away-here), to demonstrate that a transitional object allows the child to take distance from its attachment to the mother so that it can start to separate itself from the mother. Taking distance is, according to De Waelhens, introducing the Hegelian negative, which is the birth of the subject. Fourth, De Waelhens gives a dialectic reading of the history of German and French psychiatry. He shows the epistemological contradictions in the work of some of the great nineteenth century psychiatrists relying too exclusively on a biological model of schizophrenia.

In his contribution to this volume, Wilfried Ver Eecke draws several lessons from evaluating the literature on schizophrenia. He argues that epistemologically neither a biological nor a psychological method of reasoning can capture all the factors that can play a role in the creation of schizophrenia. He relies heavily, but not exclusively, on the Finnish studies of Tienari , Myrhman, and Wahlberg and their colleagues to provide statistical evidence that non-biological factors also play an important role in causing schizophrenia. He relies heavily, but again not exclusively, on the study by Karon and VandenBos to demonstrate statistically the efficiency of psychodynamically inspired therapy of schizophrenics.

Ver Eecke also addresses an apparent inconsistency in De Waelhens' presentation of Lacan's theory of schizophrenia. Where De Waelhens seemed to argue at one time that the mother figure was the crucial figure to explain schizophrenia (leading to a defective relation to the body) and at another time that it was the role of the father which was crucial (leading to a defective relation to language and the symbolic), there Ver Eecke argues that the defective function of each influences the function of the other. He then draws a conclusion for the therapy of schizophrenics: to be helpful a therapist will have to address both deficiencies. The problem for treating schizophrenics is that correcting an unconscious deficiency to the body-a deficiency in the imaginary-requires a totally different kind of intervention than an attempt to correct a symbolic deficiency-a deficiency in the paternal function. A correction of the imaginary requires a kind of maternal mirroring; a correction of the symbolic requires making a distinction or a prohibition stick. One further difficulty arises. Psychotherapy uses language in its treatment. However, language in schizophrenics is deficient. We can therefore expect that language will be inefficient. This is so unless the therapist uses language, first, to make a repair at the imaginary level and only thereafter makes an attempt to make a correction in the symbolic. In analyzing successful therapeutic techniques reported by several therapists Ver Eecke discovers that all of them first try to repair the imaginary before they attempt to make corrections to the symbolic. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, Authentic, Religious
Chip Correll is in his late 20's and through medication successfully manages schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), two severe, biologically-based mental illnesses. The treatment success rate for schizophrenia is 65 percent, better than most people imagine. Central to Chip's recovery, however, is his faith in God and love for his family. The book is more than an autobiograph: it is a conversation a person with a courageous, optimistic spirit, who confronts an illness which most Americans, because of ignorance and fear, rarely ever engage (Keep in mind that many homeless people suffer from mental illnesses). The book is an expression of Chip's hopes, emotions and individuality. It may not be a best-seller, but it is authentic and interesting. Its most important revelation is that in most respects, Chip, like any person with schizophrenia, is much like any of us. He lives in Florida and owns a condo. He likes dogs. He likes to travel. He is a college graduate and former honors student. Although he must depend on Social Security Disability Income because of the severity of his illness, he volunteers writing press releases and short magazine profiles. He would like someday to work in public relations in the entertainment industry. In this work, he bears witness and speaks truths that we all should consider. ... Read more

Product Description
Schizophrenia: A Scientific Delusion?, first published in 1990, made a very significant contribution to the debates on the concepts of schizophrenia and mental illness. These concepts remain both influential and controversial and this new updated second edition provides an incisive critical analysis of the debates over the last decade. As well as providing updated versions of the historical and scientific arguments against the concept of schizophrenia which formed the basis of the first edition, Boyle covers significant new material relevant to today's debates, including: The development of DSM-IV's version of 'schizophrenia' Analysis of social, psychological and linguistic processes which construct 'schizophrenia' as a reasonable version of reality A detailed critical evaluation of recent alternatives to the concept of schizophrenia Schizophrenia: A Scientific Delusion? demonstrates that the need for analysis and debate on these issues is as great as ever and that we need to question how we think about and manage what we call "madness". ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Josh Halliwick's Madness
This book was handed to me by a dear friend whom said I know your busy with your reaseach on Celtic lore - but if you get a chance.... So while eating my dinner that evening I opened it and by the 3rd sentence was hooked. I enjoied the journalistic style of writing. I felt this was a VERY good and realistic diplication of this condition. I also found this individuals compassion heartwarming, and durning my reading often wondered whom was really mad. The light hearted approach made for a great read. At first, I was a bit perplexed by the ending, wanting to read more - but than it occured to me, that it was so like life, in that it just goes on. I would recomend this book as a good read and hope to see this story continue. I would like to see a little more character development, and found this to be the only short comming of the book.

"Josh Halliwick's Madness" by [[ASIN:1439256055 Josh Halliwick's Madness: A Lighthearted Look at Schizophrenia] Marty Weinstein and Bob Wyrick

Marty Weinstein, with the help of writer/journalist Bob Wyrick, has written an incredibly brave book in which through the prism of humor he takes a look at himself and what ails him.In doing so he succeeds in negating much of the effect of schizophrenia on his life.

In dealing with his problems his use of humor makes it possible to lead a normal, productive life and to relegate his auditory hallucinations to the sidelines of his existence, in a manner similar to that of Professor Nash, the Princeton mathematician.

Mr. Weinstein's book will contribute to our ability to deal with schizophrenia, not only among those afflicted, but also among the family members and the professionals who seek to help alleviate the schizophrenic's burden.

May Mr. Weinstein take further looks at himself beyond "Josh Halliwick's Madness" and thus deepen our understanding of how to successfully live with schizophrenia.

Product Description
The eleventh and final volume in Fantagraphics' acclaimed "Bodé Library" (produced with the cooperation of the Bodé estate and collectors around the world) focuses on Bodé's introspective, personal stories. Presented in a smaller, more intimate format than earlier volumes, it will reprint his long out-of-print early caveman masterpiece "The Man," as well as the autobiographical title strip "Schizophrenia" (in full color for the first time anywhere, shot from the original art!), plus a wealth of rare and hard-to-find illustrations, strips, and other goodies—including at least a few surprises for even the most hardcore Bodé collector. Bodé (pronounced "bo-dee") is considered the king in the world of graphitti/aerosol art. His vast imagination gave birth to entire universes and characters, including Cheech Wizard, Junkwaffel, and many more. Although he passed away in 1975, before the graffiti scene even took off, Bodé's legacy was cemented when graffiti greats like Kel 139 and Dondi actively borrowed from and paid tribute to the underground great. More recently, his work has been referenced in song by hip hop legends like the Beastie Boys. As such, Bodé occupies a truly unique niche in the world of underground comics, embraced by both the hippie counterculture of the 1960s as well as the hip hop community of the 1990s. ... Read more

Product Description
Out of It: An Autobiography on the Experience of Schizophrenia guides us through one man’s mental journey through seven months of schizophrenia.

While being interviewed by the emergency room psychiatrist, the white-haired man in the cowboy hat that I had seen earlier looked inside. He was handsome, and even though the man looked older, I knew that it was my step-father (but it actually wasn’t). After the brief interview with the doctor, I was allowed to leave with my family for several days. I stayed with my family, explaining and joking about how I knew that the joke was on them, and that I was onto everything they had been doing. Then I took on a more depressing state, as I realized more and more that I might not ever get out of this. Since I was in some sort of coma, it was clear that they didn’t know how to get me out. Of course Amelia was waiting to be in my arms, but she couldn’t do it while I was in this dream-state world, then I wouldn’t want to leave it. She was only trying to show me that she was standing by my bedside, crying and holding my hand, and overjoyed that I finally knew at least that she had always loved me.

Beyond Medication focuses on the creation and evolution of the therapeutic relationship as the agent of change in the recovery from psychosis.

Organized from the clinician’s point of view, this practical guidebook moves directly into the heart of the therapeutic process with a sequence of chapters that outline the progressive steps of engagement necessary to recovery. Both the editors and contributors challenge the established medical model by placing the therapeutic relationship at the centre of the treatment process, thus supplanting medication as the single most important element in recovery.

Divided into three parts, topics of focus include:

  • Strengthening the patient
  • The mechanism of therapeutic change
  • Sustaining the therapeutic approach.

This book will be essential reading for all mental health professionals working with psychosis including psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers.

Product Description

Neuroprotection is a novel perspective for the treatment of disorders that lead to neurodegeneration and disabilities as a result of deterioration of neurons due to apoptosis, oxidative stress, excitotoxicity, and other mechanisms. These mechanisms have implications not only for neurodegenerative disorders, but also for schizophrenia, mood and cognitive disorders. The purpose of this book is to provide an up-to-date overview of basic and clinical studies concerning the neuroprotective approach, mechanisms, and several compounds with neuroprotective properties that may contribute to more efficacious treatment of major mental health disorders.

The book is divided into two sections. The first section serves as an introduction and overview of conceptual issues of the neuroprotective approach, and some neurobiological advances. Chapters in this section review definitions, perspectives, and issues that provide a conceptual base for the rest of the book. In addition, this part includes chapters in which the authors present and discuss the findings from basic studies of neurodegenerative mechanisms that are associated with the pathogenesis of major mental health disorders. The second section focuses on findings obtained from clinical trials with neuroprotective compounds, and neuromodulatory techniques. The take-home message is that principles of the neuroprotective approach may be applied to treatment of schizophrenia, mood and cognitive disorders. Contributors to this book are among the most active investigators and clinicians in the field who provide new perspectives not only clarifying ongoing controversies but also propose diverse aspects and new insights to neuroprotection.

This book is intended for a broad readership, which includes a broad spectrum of readers including neuroscientists, psychiatrists, neurologists, pharmacologists, clinical psychologists, general practitioners, geriatricians, graduate students, and policy makers in the fields of mental health.

Schizophrenia may not be a single disease, but the result of a diverse set of related conditions. Modern neuroscience is beginning to reveal some of the genetic and environmental underpinnings of schizophrenia; however, an approach less well travelled is to examine the medical disorders that produce symptoms resembling schizophrenia. This book is the first major attempt to bring together the diseases that produce what has been termed 'secondary schizophrenia'. International experts from diverse backgrounds ask the questions: does this medical disorder, or drug, or condition cause psychosis? If yes, does it resemble schizophrenia? What mechanisms form the basis of this relationship? What implications does this understanding have for aetiology and treatment? The answers are a feast for clinicians and researchers of psychosis and schizophrenia. They mark the next step in trying to meet the most important challenge to modern neuroscience - understanding and conquering this most mysterious of human diseases. ... Read more

Product Description
Psychodiagnosis in Schizophrenia is a reprint of a classic volume in assessment psychology that first appeared in 1966. The book concerns the use of psychodiagnostic techniques in the differential diagnosis of schizophrenia. The author first presents a conceptual analysis of schizophrenic disturbance in terms of impaired ego functioning and extrapolates from schizophrenic ego impairments to psychodiagnostic indices that have been demonstrated to assess them. In particular, Weiner refers to the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, the Rorschach Inkblot Method, and the Draw-A-Person test. Clinical and research data delineating the nature of psychological deficits in schizophrenia are reviewed, and practical guidelines for the clinical assessment of these deficits are presented.

The author next considers several differential diagnostic possibilities frequently considered in the evaluation of schizophrenic persons, with separate chapters devoted to the many forms of schizophrenia, such as: acute, chronic, paranoid, nonparanoid, incipient, remitting, borderline and pseudoneurotic. There are also chapters that focus on schizoaffective disorder and adolescent schizophrenia. The conceptual and empirical contributions to these distinctions are reviewed; accordingly, the differentiating characteristics of these subcategories are related to parameters of psychodiagnostic test performance. In additon, the process of differential psychodiagnosis in schizophrenia is illustrated by detailed case studies. In an extended new preface, the author comments on current perspectives and contemporary literature related to the individual chapters of the text.
