Product Description
This book is the by-product of an ambitious multi-disciplinary research project that addresses social cohesion in the context of human adaptation to environmental, social and economic change in rural southern Saskatchewan during the post-World War II period. It is based on interviews conducted with long-term residents of six rural communities (Balcarres, Carlyle, Craik, Eastend, Naicam and Willow Bunch). History is found in the lives of people and the geography of places, not just in accounts of politics, the economy or the transformation of the land. Many of the long-time residents of Saskatchewan's rural communities have stories to tell and memories to pass on. This book ensures that at least a few of their experiences will be shared. Yet these narratives are more than just memories; they also help us understand the challenges that face rural Saskatchewan and as such, serve as a rich source of material that advances both our historical and current understanding of social cohesion and adaptation within this particular context. ... Excerpt: Canada's History is the official magazine of Canada's National History Society. It is published six times a year, and aims to promote interest in and knowledge of Canadian history. Founded in 1920 as The Beaver by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), the magazine was acquired by the Society in 1994. Subject matter includes all aspects of Canadian history. The founding of The Beaver was one of the many activities in celebration of HBC's 250th anniversary. It was seen as a staff publication "devoted to The Interests of Those Who Serve the Hudson's Bay Company." The first issue appeared in October 1920, under the banner, The Beaver, A Journal of Progress the "successful name" in a staff competition. Five thousand copies were printed and distributed at a total cost of $570. According to Charles Sale, who became the 29th Governor of HBC, there was a "purely personal and domestic character" to the initial magazine. Sale felt this approach was too narrow. He envisioned The Beaver as "... one of exceeding use to ...Staff; but also a publication that could ...be distributed to customers to their benefit and is, at the same time a practical reminder (through advertising) of the Company's existence and of the goods which it offers." Beginning with the December 1923 issue, the company began offering the magazine to non-Hudson's Bay employees at a rate of one dollar a year a rate still in effect well into the '30s. The following year, the magazine ceased being a monthly publication and became a quarterly. Significant changes took place in 1933 with the September issue. The original digest format was replaced by a standard magaz...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=3994330 ... Read more

Product Description
Saskatchewan’s story is a people story. In "Saskatchewan’s Own: People Who MadeDifference," veteran Saskatoon journalist Verne Celmence draws from decades of experience spent observing and writing about the fascinating people who shaped the history of his beloved province. Clemence brings to life the people who created the province’s schools, libraries, and hospitals, worked in the background for the betterment of youth, or tirelessly endeavored to bring about the social justice that came to define the province. He also tells the success stories of those who led the way in arts, sciences, business, and sports.

But there were also those who marched to their own drums: a farmer who secretly recorded the life of his community in verse; another who built an ocean-going vessel in the midst of a sea of dry land, and a loner with a passion for dinosaur bones in southern Saskatchewan. From Tommy Douglas to Walter Farewell, famous politicians to little-known yet notable eccentrics, these are the people who added colour and texture to the fabric of life in the province. ... Product Description

Against all odds, the miners of Bienfait, Saskatchewan attempted, in 1931, to change their miserable situation by organizing a union.Stephen Endicott focuses on the miners' tumultuous thirty-day strike to explore the social consequences of capitalist restructuring during the Great Depression. The miners' bid to gain union recognition with the aid of the Workers' Unity League of Canada failed, and Endicott's in?depth examination of the key factors and players attempts to explain why it did so, and why a similar union drive a decade later eventually succeeded.

Based on a large number of both oral and written primary resources, Bienfait offers a new interpretation of the role of the corporations, the government, the courts and the police and in the process demonstrates how a militant union leadership helped the workers gain the strength and unity of purpose to challenge the powers of wealth and deep-seated prejudice.Endicott opens a new chapter in the history of Canadian labour relations which reveals much about Canadians and Canadian society during the Depression.
