Excerpt: An Alberta clipper (also known as a Canadian Clipper) is a fast moving low pressure area which generally affects the central provinces of Canada and parts of the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes regions of the United States. Most clippers occur between December and February, but can also occur occasionally in the month of November. Alberta clippers take their name from Alberta, Canada, the province from which they appear to descend, and from clipper ships of the 19th century, one of the fastest ships of that time. A clipper originates when warm, moist winds from the Pacific Ocean come into contact with the mountains in the provinces of British Columbia and then Alberta. The air travels down the lee side of the mountains, often forming a chinook in Alberta, then develops into a storm over the Canadian prairies when it becomes entangled with the cold air mass that normally occupies the region in winter. The storm then slides southward and gets caught up in the jet stream, sending the storm barreling into central and eastern areas of North America. Ironically, the chinook which in part originates the Alberta clipper usually brings relatively warm weather (often approaching 10C/50F in the depths of winter) to southern Alberta itself, and the term is therefore not used in Alberta. The storms sweep in at high speed over whatever land they encounter, usually bringing with them sharp cold fronts and drastically lower temperatures. It is not uncommon for an Alberta clipper to cause temperatures to drop by 30°F (16°C) in as little as 10 to 12 hours. Oft...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1301275 ... Read more

Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Many historically significant buildings in Regina, Saskatchewan were lost during the period 1945 through approximately 1970 when the urge to "modernize" overtook developers' and city planners' sense of history and heritage. The old warehouse district to the north of the old CPR tracks was Regina's original commercial raison d'être once Lieutenant-Governor Edgar Dewdney had established the site of his considerable landholdings as the site of his Territorial Capital. With latter-day eclipse of the railways in favour of highway trucking, the Warehouse District has lost its original purpose. In recent years the Warehouse District has incrementally been transformed into an interesting shopping and residential precinct. The Assiniboia Club on Victoria Avenue has long since ceased to be an élite men's club and continues in use as a restaurant; the former Anglican Diocesan property is now being intelligently developed along commercial lines with the historic buildings jealously retained. Significant historic buildings and precincts include the following. Old Post Office ("Prince Edward Building") viewed from intersection of 11th Avenue and Scarth Street looking west, pre-First World WarThe Old Post Office has now been converted to commercial and cultural use in connection with the ongoing revitalisation of downtown Scarth Street as a pedestrian mall and houses the Globe Theatre. It was completed in 1907; its 1912 clock tower was for many years locally regarded as Reginas Big Ben. The building was replaced as a post office in 1956 by the current post office on Sa...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5413437 ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Saskatchewan," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Saskatchewan in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Saskatchewan when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Saskatchewan, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Chapters: History of Saskatchewan. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 163. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: History of Saskatchewan encompasses the study of past human events and activities of the province of Saskatchewan, the middle of Canada's three prairie provinces. Archaeological studies give some clues as to the history and lifestyles of the Palaeo-Indian, Taltheilei, and Shield Archaic Traditions who were the first occupants of the prehistoric era of this geographical area. They evolved into the history of the first nations people who kept their history alive in oral tradition. The First Nations tribes that were a part of this area were the Chipewyan, Cree, Saulteaux, Assiniboine, Atsina and Sioux. Henry Kelsey (16671724), was the first European (an English man) to visit this area, and arrived 1690. Other European explorers also soon arrived followed by fur traders such as The Governor and Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson's Bay (Hudson's Bay Company) and North West Company. Clifford Sifton, Minister of the Interior in charge of immigration, (18961905) induced a variety of agriculturally inclined European emigrants to Canada to settle prairie land around the transcontinental railway. The political boundaries of this area have changed several times evolving through Rupert's Land, Provisional Districts of the North West Territories, and finally a province. Saskatchewan has been a province of Canada since 1905. The history of this plains area actually began 2,000-2,100 million years ago wherein there were two continents separated by an ocean. The "Churchill Continent" which would be Manitoba and Saskatchewan, and the "Superior Continent" which would comprise Manitoba and Ontario. 1,830 - 1,800 million years ago these two land masses collided. Product Description
The heavy hand of history is a metaphor for the weight exerted by past events, decisions, institutions and attitudes on the present. To prepare for 2005, the authors in this volume were asked to write essays on their interpretation of the long-run historical factors that significantly influence Saskatchewan today and will continue to shape its future. ...
