Excerpt: SaskPower since 1929 has been the principal supplier of electricity in Saskatchewan, Canada, serving more than 451,000 customers and managing $4.5 billion in assets. One of Saskatchewans Top 15 Employers, SaskPower is a major employer in the province with almost 2,500 permanent full-time staff located in 71 communities. SaskPower was founded as the Saskatchewan Power Commission in 1929, becoming the Saskatchewan Power Corporation in 1949. The abbreviated name SaskPower was officially adopted in 1987. Owned by the government through its holding company, the Crown Investments Corporation, SaskPower is governed by a Board of Directors who are accountable to the government Minister responsible for SaskPower. SaskPower has the exclusive right and the exclusive obligation to supply electricity in the province, except in the city of Swift Current and most of the city of Saskatoon. SaskPower serves over 451,000 customers through more than 154,000 kilometres of power lines throughout the province and covers a service territory of over 526,600 square kilometres. This relatively low customer density means that while most North American electrical utilities supply an average of 12 customers per circuit kilometre, SaskPower supplies about three. In fiscal year 2006, total electricity revenue was $1,456 million (Canadian) on sales of 17.4 terawatthours of electricity. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information for anyone needing to know the effects of uranium and uranium mining.
The politics of the NDP Government in Saskatchewan to continue to totally ignore the science is brought out in spades. This is a very good lesson for other regions facing new uranium mines. The book is a very easy read. Perfect for the "lay" person/activist who just wants to learn more about the uranium industry.I highly recommend it. ... Read more

Product Description
Walter Scott was a populist with a vision for the new province. A newspaperman, entrepreneur, and land speculator before being elected to the House of Commons in 1900, by 1905, Scott had become leader of the Saskatchewan Liberal party and premier of the new province. After the 1905 election, Scott embarked on a program to build the province's infrastructure, including the Legislative Building and the University of Saskatchewan. He believed that agriculture was a vital component in the fabric of Saskatchewan life, and by including farm leadership in cabinet, he created a political climate founded on agriculture. Scott's government was also instrumental in enacting prohibition and establishing female suffrage. The fruits of Walter Scott's labours in education, agriculture and public policy continue to be harvested in Saskatchewan today, but few remember who planted the original seeds. ... Read more

Excerpt: The Muskoday First Nation (formerly the John Smith First Nation) is a First Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada, composed of Cree and Saulteaux peoples. The First Nation has a registered population of 1552 people as of December 2007, of which approximately 560 members of the First Nation live on-reserve, and approximately 980 live off-reserve. Muskoday's territory is located in the aspen parkland biome. The First Nation's land was settled after Chief John Smith of a Cree and Saulteaux band who were originally from the St. Peters Reserve (this was near Selkirk, Manitoba and was dissolved, with the remainder of the band today comprising the Peguis First Nation in Manitoba) settled along the South Saskatchewan River in the 1870s. Chief Smith signed onto Treaty Six at Fort Carlton in 1876 making the settlement legally an Indian reserve. The reserve and First Nation was initially named after their Chief John Smith, who was a brother of Chief James Smith, the founder of the James Smith First Nation. Also during the late 1800s, James Isbister served for a period as a farm instructor at Muskoday. During the 1970s, the John Smith First Nation became the Muskoday First Nation.
