Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Mt Matavanu is an active volcano on the island of Savai'i in Samoa. The most recent eruptions from Matavanu occurred between 1905 - 1911 with lava flows on its northern side flowing towards the island's coastline and into the sea in the district of Gaga'emauga. The eruptions began 4 August 1905 and stopped in November 1911. The lava flowed over 40 square miles of countryside to the lagoon and reef, destroying villages in its path between Samalae'ulu to the east and Saleaula to the west. The depth of the lava flow in some parts was 400 feet. Due to the destruction of their homes by the seaside, some of the villages relocated further inland by the main island road. The lava fields can still be seen today, especially in Saleaula as well as the picturesque village of Mauga where the houses or fale are situated around a small volcanic crater. There are church ruins as well a 'Virgin's Grave', the burial place of a nun where the molten lava flowed around rather than over it. Other volcanoes on Savai'i include Mata o le Afi and Mauga Afi. The island of Savai'i is an active shield volcano. Its highest peak is Mt Silisili. In Samoan mythology the god of earthquakes is Mafui'e. Another mythical figure Ti'iti'i tricked the earthquake god so that Samoans could have fire to cook their food. ...http://booksllc.net/?id=24570692 ... Read more

Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: National Park of American Samoa -Pola Tai (Cock's comb) off Vatia Bay, National Park of American Samoa, TutuilaThe Tutuila unit of the park is on the north end of the island near Pago Pago. It is separated by Mount Alava (1,610 feet (490 m)) and the Maugaloa Ridge and includes the Amalau Valley, Craggy Point, Tafeu Cove, and the islands of Pola and Manofa. It is the only part of the park accessible by car and attracts the vast majority of people. The park lands include a trail to the top of Mount Alava and historic World War II gun emplacement sites at Breakers Point and Blunt's Point. The trail runs along the ridge in dense forest, north of which the land slopes steeply away to the ocean. Ofu and Olosega can be accessed by small plane from the airport on Tutuila to Ofu. Accommodations are available on Ofu at the airport and at Asaga. Ta can be reached by a flight from Tutuila to Fitiuta on Ta. Accommodations are available on Ta. A trail runs from Saua around Siu Point to the southern coastline and stairs to the 3,000-foot (910 m) summit of Lata Mountain. Because of its remote location, diversity among the terrestrial species is low. Approximately 30% of the plants and one bird species (the Samoan Starling) are endemic to the archipelago. The Many-coloured Fruit-dove may be found in the park. Three species of bat are the only native mammals: two large fruit bats (Samoa Flying-fox and Insular Flying-fox) and a small insectivore, the Pacific Sheath-Tailed Bat. They serve an important role in pollinating the island's plants. The sheath-tailed bat was...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=758636 ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Samoa," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Samoa in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Samoa when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Samoa, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

From the author: Vulnerability of agricultural societies to natural hazards sometimes increases as those groups are incorporated into the global economy. Data and observations taken after a 1990 hurricane suggest that market participation did not increase vulnerability of two rural communities in Western Samoa. Although a weakening of the moral economy probably accentuated the vulnerability of poor households, the relationship between market participation and a breakdown in precapitalist social relationships was not simple. Positive self-help response of villages to the hurricane can be attributed to strength of their social institutions.

Product Description
The 2009 Samoa earthquake was an 8.1 Mw submarine earthquake that took place in the Samoan Islands region at 06:48:11 local time on September 29, 2009 (17:48:11 UTC, September 29). It was the largest earthquake of 2009. A tsunami was generated which caused substantial damage and loss of life in Samoa, American Samoa, and Tonga. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center recorded a 3-inch (76 mm) rise in sea levels near the epicenter, and New Zealand scientists determined that the waves measured 14 metres (46 ft) at their highest on the Samoan coast. The quake occurred on the outer rise of the Kermadec-Tonga Subduction Zone. This is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates in the Earth's lithosphere meet and earthquakes and volcanic activity are common. Countries affected by the tsunami in the areas that were hit are American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga (Niuatoputapu) where more than 189 people have been killed, most of them in Samoa. ... Read more

Product Description
Archaeology in Samoa began with the first systematic survery of achaeological remains on Savai'i island by Jack Golson in 1957. Since then, surveys and studies in the rest of Samoa have uncovered major findings of settlements, stone and earth mounds including star mounds, Lapita pottery remains and pre-historic artifacts. An important part of archaeology in Samoa and Oceania involves finding the answer to the origins of Polynesians.ongoing research which is being undertaken in conjunction with other fields including linguistics and genetics. The oldest date so far from pre-historic remains in Samoa has been calculated by New Zealand scientists to a likely true age of circa 3,000 BP (Before Present) from a Lapita site at Mulifanua during the 1970s. ...
