Product Description

Ved Mehta joined the staff of The New Yorker in the 1960s, blind since the age of four and already on his way to a career as a writer. In a series of four relationships he demanded that his lovers, like him, pretend he could see. With lyrical and stirring accuracy, Mehta revisits these love affairs today, tracing the links between his denial of his disability and the cruel transformations that each of his lovers underwent. "Poignant and occasionally hilarious."—The New York Times Book Review "This elegant volume remains a striking piece of insight into the nature of love."—Publishers Weekly "[An] excoriatingly truthful and heartbreaking account of the pursuit and loss of love...."—The Times of London "A mesmerizing account ... the most arresting passages are Mehta's mind-expanding descriptions of how he perceives the world."—Booklist

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving "All for Love"
I loved this book. As soon as I finished it, I wanted to start it again. My college-age son is enjoying it too.It is a wonderful way for the two of us to connect. With elegance and humor, Mr. Mehta captures those all-too-familiar feelings of being uncontrollably drawn to someone long after good sense would tell you to move on. His courage and honesty in discussing his psychoanalysis make his childhood games of leaping from rooftop to rooftop, despite his blindness, seem tame in comparison. Ultimately, "All for Love" allows the reader to forgive himself or herself for lapses of judgment they may havemade in their own romantic encounters. Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love Is All
Ved Mehta's remarkable "All For Love" might be called a memoir, a looking back upon a fumbling, yearning period in a complicated man's younger life. But the book inhabits both the past and the present, the author understanding at one and the same moment what he was and what he is. He looks at four long-ago love affairs, and through the inclusion of the women's love letters to him he lets us see who they were, to themselves as well as to him, at that time. He writes as a man from India assuming the role of a major New Yorker writer. Though he cannot see, he understands how everything looks. Emotionally, he seems to know what love did to him, and what he did to love. He was much helped, as he explains, by psychoanalysis; but his insights come through that painful and courageous reaching into the dark which is the only way to the light. This is a beautiful and courageous book by a writer who lives, within and without, in many dimensions. I was very moved by it and doubt there will ever be another book quite to match it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fromthe Personal to the Universal
This book is above all a compelling read.It is the only memoir I have ever encountered which is not in the least self-serving, prideful, or rancorous. In fact it is excruciatingly objective.By describing in elegant, spare prose the particulars of four love affairs as he lived them at the time, he reveals something profound and universal about what it is to fall in love, and his very real blindness becomes a metaphor for the blindness that produces fantasy, misunderstanding and, alas, pain. This is a beautiful and wise book, as gripping as a novel, and utterly absorbing.I have recommended it to friends who then found they could not put the book down.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure drivel
In yet another installment (whenever will it end?) in his self-serving autobiogrpahical series, Mehta devles into far too much detail about his love life. The point? I'm sure there must be one, but it's painfully clear than Mehta wants to prove that despite being blind, he was still man enough to get girls. His vanity and hubris are on clear display and one has to wonder why he felt the need to share this type of personal information with the general topic. Perhaps he's running out of things to write about. In any case, this book is a work of pure ego and not worth the time. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
I ordered this book to 'fill in' while waiting for the next Laura Griffin book to be released. Turns out that I could highly recommend this collection of shorts, including authors besides L. Griffin! It's an exciting read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great buy!
I was very happy to find myself loving all 3 stories in this book.Usually when I buy a book with 3 stories in it from 3 separate authors I wind up liking just 1 story and then am stuck with the other 2.Not in this case!I loved ALL THREE stories here.I have always loved Sherillyn Kenyon and Cindy Gerard and have many of their books so I anticipated that I would like their stories and I did.I had never heard of Laura Griffin before but I thought her story was easily as good as the other two.I LOVE finding great new authors and will be looking for more from all 3 authors!

4-0 out of 5 stars fun romantic suspense novellas
"Just Bad Enough" by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love.CeCe Caprice earns her living by performing as a statue. Her performance is so good, someone assumes she is a statue and hides a revealing recording on her body.Only her next door neighbor, Bureau of American Defense undercover agent Jeremy Sunn might be able to keep CeCe safe from the mob.

"Leave No Trace" by Cindy Gerard.CIA operative David Cavanaugh goes to Myanmar to get American Carrie Granger out of a labor prison.

"Unstoppable" by Laura Griffin.Forensic anthropologist Kelsey Quinn and former SEAL Gage Brewer accidentally end up at a location where a double murder occurred several months ago.The murders have ties to illegal immigration and a terrorist plot.

Although readers will need to ignore believability (big time for the first two entries and somewhat less for the other) romantic suspense fans will enjoy the latest BAD tale and the other two action-packed thrillers.

Deadly Promises by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Dianna Love, Cindy Gerard, and Laura Griffin
Romantic Suspense- Sept. 28th, 2010
4 stars

This anthology includes 3 solid reads; my favorite is Laura Griffin's Unstoppable. In this book 2 of the stories are a part of an ongoing series.Laura Griffin continues her Tracers series and Sherrilyn Kenyon/Dianna Love continue their BAD series.

Unstoppable
In Unstoppable Laura Griffin writes a story that is part of her exhilarating Tracers series. This story starts out with action that immediately caught my attention.Gage is a navy SEAL who has been injured. While recovering he is asked by his commanding officer to guard his niece, Dr. Kelsey Quinn.Kelsey is working at an archeological dig where a woman has been shot nearby and there has been a break in.But she believes in her work and knows she can take care of herself. She resents the sexy Quinn `babysitting' her.But when they find fresh, new bones instead of old ones and a secret tunnel both realize that something dangerous is going on.But can they solve the mystery before the killers find them?
This was a thrilling suspense novel from start to finish. It was also the most interesting of the 3 stories.I was amazed the author was able to build such an exciting multi-layered plot in such a short story. It didn't hurt that Gage is tough and way HOT!Plus Kelsey is very feisty and a heroine after my own heart.4 ½ stars

Leave No Trace
In Leave No Trace Cindy Gerard demonstrates her mastery of the suspense thriller.David Cavanaugh is tired of his undercover work for the CIA.He desperately wants to retire but when a colleague asks Cav to find his missing friend (Carrie Granger) hereluctantly agrees.Cav arrives in Myanmar where he discovers Carrie has been caught up in a bungled arrest. To cover up their mistake the government has thrown her in their ruby mines where she labors as a virtual slave. To free her Cav must pretend to work with the corrupt government in Myanmar. Can Carrie learn to trust him or will this rescue mission end in tragedy for them both?
This was an exhilarating read and one where I could feel the tension between the 2 characters and the storyline.Cav was a dashing hero and Carrie was believable.I really felt for both of them and they had a wonderful chemistry.4 ½ stars

Just Bad Enough- part of their BAD series
In Just Bad Enough we meet undercover agent Jeremy Sunn.Jeremy has the hots for CeCe.But as part of his cover he has a rap sheet a mile long.He acts the playboy with a series of women. But since he met CeCe he wants a real relationship.Unfortunately, she seems to be putting him off.CeCe has secrets of her own.She has ties to criminals that she has been running away from. When CeCe unknowingly hides an important memory disc she and Jeremy must fight a deadly killer who wants it.But what will happen when gun shy CeCe finds out about Jeremy's fake criminal history? Will their deception and lies destroy their budding relationship?
This was a fast read and I really liked the hero.He was definitely sexy and noble. But I didn't like how CeCe treated him.Her excuses not to be with him did not seem realistic and her character was a little wimpy.I really felt bad for Jeremy, who I grew to care about.Because of this I could only rate this story 3 1/2 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three great stories!
I pre-ordered this book because I'm a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love's BAD Agency series, and never miss any story if those characters are involved.I'm happy to say I got the bonus of two other great reads in this book!

I'm a sucker for SEAL heroes, always such honorable, damaged characters, and Laura Griffin does a great job with "Unstoppable".I hadn't read Laura's books before, and I'm officially her newest fan.I already knew Cindy Gerard wrote awesome edge-of-your-seat suspense, and "Leave No Trace" didn't disappoint either.

Of course, the real reason I ended up with Deadly Promises is for "Just Bad Enough"--the latest BAD agency story. I'd seen glimpses of Jeremy Sunn in previous books, but wasn't expecting him to have his own story any time soon.He seemed like such a prankster surfer boy. The smart-ass prankster is there for certain, but flip that coin and he's got a complicated dark side I never would have expected. He's the type you might think is harmless, but just like the other BAD agents, don't get between him and somebody he cares about. And when his new neighbor, CeCe, is threatened, he cares. Kenyon and Love know how to pack a lot of story into a few pages.

This anthology would be worth getting just for Jeremy's story, but I was thrilled with the other stories, each one perfect for a quick afternoon read, all in this one book. Perfect for a boring airport wait. I traveled this weekend and was actually hoping the plane would be late so I wouldn't have to stop reading to board!

I absolutely recommend this anthology. ... Read more

Product Description
I took a walk on Spaulding's Farm the other afternoon. I saw the setting sun lighting up the opposite side of a stately pine wood. Its golden rays straggled into the aisles of the wood as into some noble hall. I was impressed as if some ancient and altogether admirable and shining family had settled there in that part of the land called Concord, unknown to me,—to whom the sun was servant,—who had not gone into society in the village,—who had not been called on. I saw their park, their pleasure-ground, beyond through the wood, in Spaulding's cranberry-meadow. The pines furnished them with gables as they grew. Their house was not obvious to vision; their trees grew through it. I do not know whether I heard the sounds of a suppressed hilarity or not. They seemed to recline on the sunbeams. They have sons and daughters. They are quite well. The farmer's cart-path, which leads directly through their hall, does not in the least put them out,—as the muddy bottom of a pool is sometimes seen through the reflected skies. They never heard of Spaulding, and do not know that he is their neighbor,—notwithstanding I heard him whistle as he drove his team through the house. Nothing can equal the serenity of their lives. Their coat of arms is simply a lichen. I saw it painted on the pines and oaks. Their attics were in the tops of the trees. They are of no politics. There was no noise of labor. I did not perceive that they were weaving or spinning. Yet I did detect, when the wind lulled and hearing was done away, the finest imaginable sweet musical hum,—as of a distant hive in May, which perchance was the sound of their thinking. They had no idle thoughts, and no one without could see their work, for their industry was not as in knots and excrescences embayed.
But I find it difficult to remember them. They fade irrevocably out of my mind even now while I speak and endeavor to recall them, and recollect myself. It is only after a long and serious effort to recollect my best thoughts that I become again aware of their cohabitancy. If it were not for such families as this, I think I should move out of Concord.

Amazon.com Review
"Lilith is equal if not superior to the best of Poe,"the great 20th-century poet W.H. Auden said of this novel, but thecomparison only begins to touch on the richness, density, and wonderof this late 19th-century adult fantasy novel. First published in 1895(inhabiting a universe with the early Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, andOscar Wilde--not to mention Thomas Hardy), this is the story of theaptly named Mr. Vane, his magical house, and the journeys into anotherworld into which it leads him.

Meeting up with one mystery afteranother, including Adam and Eve themselves, he slowly but surelyexplores the mystery of the human fall from grace, and of ourredemption. Instructed into the ways of seeing the deeper realities ofthis world--seeing, in a sense, by the light of the spirit--the readerand Mr. Vane both sense that MacDonald writes from his own deepexperience of radiance, from a bliss so profound that death's darknessitself is utterly eclipsed in its light. --Doug Thorpe ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Thought I would like it, but...
Since I like MacDonald's novels in general, I thought I would like Lilith, but I didn't. Maybe it's too difficult for me. I fought through it and enjoyed certain portions, but I was tempted not to finish it. I think it might be "over my head." I'm not talking about the "universalist" theology of it, because I understand what he is saying there, although I think the Bible clearly does not support it (I sense a temptation within myself to wish universalism were true), but I could have found much value in the story anyway if I could have understood it more thoroughly. I'm writing this review as a warning to readers like me who enjoy MacDonald's non-fantasy novels (and I prefer his originals there to the modernized versions) but will find Lilith to be a far different reading experience, one that they may not enjoy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Vintage MacDonald
Great read. It's not an easily decipherable 1-to-1 allegory, but full of symbolism.I don't think it's my favorite MacDonald work, but still very good.Especially if you like this author. This particular book was much bigger than I expected. It's large-ish print with lots of space.I would have gotten a different version had I realized that.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Up to Other Horror Greats of His Era
This book put me to sleep every time I went to read it.I read dry histories without falling asleep. This is a mighty indictment from me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Re-read every few years
This is one of my all time favorite books. You will find tinges of this book in the writings of CS Lewis... and JK Rowlings.
The images MacDonald creates and the story line, will haunt you for years to come. And the theology... though challenging and a bit controversial... will force you to rethink some of your ideas about salvation and damnation.
An important note on this particular edition (by Wilder Publications) is that the cover picture, as well as the write up in the back cover are for a totally different book... so if you just want an extra copy for your personal use (as I did) then buy it... but if you are looking at a copy you can give or loan, I would purchase one of the other editions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dreamlike
Even according to my usually odd tastes, Lilith is a strange read, certainly stranger and more surreal than the works of C.S. Lewis, who was greatly inspired by MacDonald. The beginning has a standard fantasy feel. The hero, Mr. Vane, is seeing to his estate. One day in the library he sees a strange apparition. Curious, he follows the spirit of the enigmatic Mr. Raven and finds himself led into a fantastical otherworld. From there the narrative becomes decidedly bizarre. Reading Lilith is like peering into a dream as Vane encounters a steady procession of inexplicable situations and grotesque images. In fact, MacDonald packs the book with so many symbols and lessons that the narrative structure tends to break down a little, and I found the story dragged quite a bit in the middle. This and MacDonald's sometimes awkward attempts at exposition made finishing the book questionable for me for a large portion of the story.

Yet I persisted... and I'm glad I did! I find it a little difficult to say why I liked Lilith. MacDonald was writing for Christian readers, and I am not one of them. I wanted to read it because of my general interest in religious imagery in fantasy and a more specific interest in the odd ways that particular mythological character has been reinvented and reinterpreted by different people. I certainly do not embrace all of MacDonald's moral ideologies fully, and some I find vaguely distasteful. Even so, I was enthralled with the images MacDonald chose to describe Vane's spiritual journey. I was intrigued when Mr. Raven subjects Vane to a Zen-like line of questioning at the beginning of the novel. I found the description of Vane's redemption and rebirth deeply moving and beautiful. Perhaps this is just my Christian upbringing showing through, but I like to think it also speaks to the relatedness of all spiritual seeking, and to the deeps well of myth and imagination from which MacDonald drew. ... There was a seeming dual purpose motivating the author to write this book.Remen is a medical doctor who basically tells the stories about how her professional experiences moved her closer to, rather than away from, emotional involvement with her clients particularly as it pertained to the connection between one's spirituality and recovery, amongst other things.
Remen also shares some very deep and moving stories that were shared with her by her clients once she became a therapist.

The enchanting true story of the woman who redefined vampires for a generation

On June 2, 2003, Stephenie Meyer had a vivid dream that would change her life forever. She dreamed of a young girl and her sparkling vampire lover lying in a field, and that dream became Twilight. Now her vampire romance novels have become a publishing phenomenon, selling more than 100 million books worldwide, and have been translated into 37 different languages. Here is the story of the woman behind the franchise. It explores the effect of her Mormon religion upon her life and writing. It also examines the authors she loves, such as L. M. Montgomery and Orson Scott Card, and their effects upon her books. Her personal life is looked at—meeting her husband and having children; as well as her professional life—the rise of the Twilight phenomenon, its critical reception, and how Stephenie has handled such immense fame.

4-0 out of 5 stars As engaging as any novel could be, but actually a memoir!
Being the rabid Picano fan that I am, it's not always easy to consider myself unbiased. However, since I thoroughly disliked his Like People in History, I feel I can be more objective now.

That said, A House on the Ocean, a House on the Bay: A Memoir is amazing. It is a thoroughly engaging book that takes us on an interesting journey of one man's life that is terribly full and robust. However, like many a Southern author (which Mr. Picano is NOT), Picano manages to make this book feel like a leisurely wander, allowing us to discover the nuances he wants us to realize at his pace and not at the pace of our reading.

It's a trick not easily done.

This is a fine book about Picano's time spent on Fire Island and the people he knew and loved during that time.

I highly recommend this book.

Although I have read most all of Felice Picano's books, I find myself returning to A HOUSE ON THE OCEAN, A HOUSE ON THE BAY most frequently - sometimes just for recalling his atmospheric descriptions of places with and without people, sometimes just to re-visit Fire Island - a place I've never been but that has become for me a solid symbol of East Coast escape.Picano's memoirs at times are overwhelming: how could one man have experienced life so richly and tranposed it to words for us, the voyeur readers?Perhaps the places and people he so succinctly describes are bathed in poetic license, but that only makes the moments in between interpersonal encounters pregnant pauses.Picano has managed to keep us entertained book after book and I eagerly await the release of ONYX.

5-0 out of 5 stars So far this volume remains my favorite
Checking as to when the next novel by Felice Picano is due out, I realized that though I have read all his books I have never written about them in this forum.Strange, but understandable when I look back over all the experiences of reading his work.Picano writes in the manner of long nighttime walks with a close friend: he shares quips and bedazzling escapades and memories of lost friends like few others. His stories are at once funny, tender, bitchy(in a way that few can imitate), and just plain good stories. In A HOUSE ON THE OCEAN, A HOUSE ON THE BAY he seems to have paused in the midst of memories very special to him...or at least his characters are so acutely drawn that they seem like pages from a diary. If you've ever wondered what Fire Island was like at its peak, here it is.Wonderful tales populated by people you'd like to know....or at least have observed!Felice Picano keeps treating us to fine writing and I eagerly await ONYX!

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh my, this is my favorite book of all time
I am Felice Picano, or certainly am living his life.Well, sort of.When I read straight through this book--a library copy, I am going to buy it now--I said to myself and to my friends that I loved the book so much because of how much I see of him in me, including that he was also born on February 22nd, that we are both gay, and that I am struggling, as he was, to write. If any book can give me inspiration to live my dream, it is "A House on the Ocean, A House on the Bay."Bravo to Picano for writing a book that was written for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of Picano's memoirs to date. Absolutely compelling.
Frankly, when I got to the final 100 pages, on Gay Pride Night, no less, Iwas so compelled to finish the book that I stayed up all night to finish itand then pack for a business trip to London.

Picking up his life in themid-1970s, Picano gives an account of post-liberation, book store jobs, love affairs, friendships, and the wisdom of time and difference.

Onceagain, it is split in parts. The first details a tortured menage a trois inwhich Felice is the one wanted "for his mind." He works as a bookstore manager and plans a career as a writer.

In the second part, hediscusses the Fire Island scene, the "Gay 2000" who influencedgay culture and the broader culture at large, and his job at a fancierbookstore--unnamed by recognizable as Rizzoli.

Picano, more here thanelsewhere, comes into contact with more recognizablecelebrities--wide-ranging from Rose Kennedy to Bette Midler (in herbathhouse singer days).

Picano also reflects on his position as asurvivor--the remaining 2% left after the AIDS crisis devestates the Gay2000, and his role now as a witness.

Also apparent is Picano's fineeducation, cultural appreciation, love of writing, determined confidence, and perceptive mind. This is the book that sent me into a summer of readingwhatever Picano books I could find. It's hard to imagine anyone--gay orstraight--not getting something out of this memoir. Truly a voice of hisgeneration, and for future ones as well

Yeah, I liked the book. :-)) ... Read more

Since the knowledge of Truth is the sovereign good of human nature, it is
natural that in every age she should have many seekers, and those who
ventured in quest of her in the dark days of ignorance and superstition
amidst the mists and tempests of the sixteenth century often ran counter
to the opinions of dominant parties, and fell into the hands of foes who

excerpt from the book..
Just where the track of the Los Gatos road streams on and upward like
the sinuous trail of a fiery rocket until it is extinguished in the blue
shadows of the Coast Range, there is an embayed terrace near the summit,
hedged by dwarf firs. At every bend of the heat-laden road the eye
rested upon it wistfully; all along the flank of the mountain, which
seemed to pant and quiver in the oven-like air, through rising dust, the
slow creaking of dragging wheels, the monotonous cry of tired springs,
and the muffled beat of plunging hoofs, it held out a promise of
sheltered coolness and green silences beyond. Sunburned and anxious
faces yearned toward it from the dizzy, swaying tops of stagecoaches,
from lagging teams far below, from the blinding white canvas covers of
"mountain schooners," and from scorching saddles that seemed to weigh
down the scrambling, sweating animals beneath. But it would seem that
the hope was vain, the promise illusive. When the terrace was reached it
appeared not only to have caught and gathered all the heat of the
valley below, but to have evolved a fire of its own from some hidden
crater-like source unknown. Nevertheless, instead of prostrating and
enervating man and beast, it was said to have induced the wildest
exaltation. The heated air was filled and stifling with resinous
exhalations. The delirious spices of balm, bay, spruce, juniper, yerba
buena, wild syringa, and strange aromatic herbs as yet unclassified,
distilled and evaporated in that mighty heat, and seemed to fire with
a midsummer madness all who breathed their fumes. They stung, smarted,
stimulated, intoxicated. It was said that the most jaded and foot-sore
horses became furious and ungovernable under their influence; wearied
teamsters and muleteers, who had exhausted their profanity in the
ascent, drank fresh draughts of inspiration in this fiery air, extended
their vocabulary, and created new and startling forms of objurgation.
It is recorded that one bibulous stage-driver exhausted description
and condensed its virtues in a single phrase: "Gin and ginger." This
felicitous epithet, flung out in a generous comparison with his favorite
drink, "rum and gum," clung to it ever after.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish we could keep reading more of Linda
One of life's pleasures for many of us was reading Linda Weltner's columns in the Boston Globe. A friend in Boston would mail copies of Linda's "Ever so Humble" columns to me, before they were run online. I miss being able to read Linda's weekly columns, but thankfully, she left us all with two great column/essay collections. The pieces in this book are timeless slices of family life, beautifully written, to be read and savored any time we need to celebrate the comforts of home life -- real home life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A student of life
Linda Weltner writes crisp prose peppered in humor and irony. She seems to be a student of life, who examines and dissects the relationships in her life. She is insightful, moving and very intelligent. Family Puzzles : A Private Life Made Public is engaging because it provides the reader with an honest look at Linda's private life and tribulations. And although we may pick up this book intending to be a voyeur, we finish it a friend and fan of Linda Weltner.

4-0 out of 5 stars A timely expression of family relationships.
I enjoyed Ms. Weltner's book for a number of reasons. However, at this point in my own life, with aging parents and growing children, I find particular interest in her sharing of her own family experiences. I watch my own relationships change and bend, and I believe the more we share our experiences, the more we have to draw on for our own life and times.

Linda shares a poem she wrote "The Crone". I absolutely loved it, and have shared it with several friends. It represents the voices of older and aging women in our society, who have been cast aside because of age. A wonderful refusal to give in, to give up.

I would recommend the book for all who enjoy the personal touch. I like to come away with something from every book I read. If it is a new thought to ponder, or an old rememberance to recall, I feel I have enjoyed my reading time. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Life of Purpose, A Life Shrouded
I was first intrigued by the topic of illicit but loyal love but after reading the book I became more interested in the strength of the author who was able to pursue a career even as she maintained her secret relationshipwith a public figure until he left the Church and as she faced therejection of her parents and some family members. These two burdens alonecould have felled an average woman today but she was also coming of age inan era of turbulent social mores which placed greater strains on her lifeand yet she persevered. This is a worthwhile read for those who areinterested in immigrant assimilation issues, feminism, New York urbandevelopment, and Italian American issues.Ienjoyed the first half of thebook the most because it evoked such a passion for life but the last halfof the book honestly detailed their relationship thus saving it from beingjust another storybook romance.

4-0 out of 5 stars A personal view
Under the Rose by Flavia Alaya

Let me start by saying that I've known the author for many years. When I received a copy of this book I was curious. Within a few seconds I was plunged deep into her Italian immigrantfamily, so strongly depicted that you almost smell tomato and garlic saucesteaming from the pages. I had thought I knew them. Now I understand that Ididn't even begin to know my own family, and I barely knew my friend.

She has remembered for us with unremitting honesty one womanlifeimpelled by the dynamics only possible in late 20th century America, emerging from the Roman Catholic traditions of Europe into the politicalupheavals of the 60s. She tells us what happened to her and how she feltabout it, avoiding the pitfalls of psychological interpretation, self-pityand justification. This is how it was for her, driven by inner passion, perhaps not yet fully understood, into a impossible relationship nurturedby both defiance and high ideals, balancing a challenging public career, ahidden family life, and political action around her irresistible love. Iknew she was always very busy; but of her indomitable strength and courageI had only inkling. While we were all wondering about managing a career anda family, she was taking on whole dimensions of additional stresses. Ithink it should be classed as a survival manual for those who demandeverything life can possibly offer.

I laughed and I cried and Iunderstood things about my own mother as the author discovered hers; I wasstirred to question dozens of my own accepted assumptions. The book hasmoved and astonished me. I didn't know my friend could write like this.

Product Description
At age twenty-three, Jack London (1876-1916) sold his first story, and within six years he was the highest paid and most widely read writer in America. To account for his success, he created a fiction of himself as the quintessential self-made man. But as Clarice Stasz demonstrates in this absorbing collective biography, London always relied on a circle of women who nurtured him, sheltered him, and fostered his legacy.

Using newly available letters and diaries from private collections, Stasz brings this diverse constellation of women to life. London was the son of freethinking Flora Wellman, yet found more maternal comfort from freed slave Jennie Prentiss and his stepsister Eliza. His early loves included a British-born consumptive, a Jewish socialist, and an African American. His first wife, Bess Maddern, was a teacher and devoted mother to daughters Bess and Joan, while his second wife, Charmian Kittredge, shared his passion for adventure and served as a model for many characters in his writings. Following his death, the various women who survived him both promoted his legacy and suffered the consequences of being constantly identified with a famous man.

In recasting London's life through the eyes of three generations of women, Stasz manages to untangle his seemingly contradictory attitudes and actions. She also reveals the struggle that ensued, after his death, among family members and scholars over how he should be remembered. What emerges from this well-researched book is a new understanding of London and a compelling portrayal of the women who knew him best. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Provocative page turner
It's hard to believe this is the same book as the Bennington person reviewed. This is a clearly written, engaging book that uses sources no one has seen before. The writer shows London's private life with sensitivity, and not with knee-jerk feminism. She also reveals some unseemly behavior by Jack London followers, which may really be the source of Bennington's spiteful comments. The world expert on London, Earle Labor, reviewed this book most positively in a California history journal, and concluded it was "enthralling."I agree.

1-0 out of 5 stars ...
This book answers a lot of questions that previous biographies only touch on or omit entirely, namely, what happened to all the women who surrounded London throughout his life and career. Ms. Stasz does a good job filling in the blanks about his mother, wives, and daughters, and brings them to us nearly a hundred years later as three-dimensional people who had great influence on London's life and work. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars A fresh perspective on London's life!
Clarice Stasz has extended her inquiry into women whose lives are dynastically joined--notably the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers. While this study departs from interrogating the realm of the rich and famous, it sustains the author's interest in the way in which women are influenced by a close connection with fame--in this case, linkage with America's charismatic first millionaire writer.Stasz's skillfully interwoven subjects range from his mother--whose love London persistently sought--to his wives, daughters, female relatives and intellectual associates. She tells a good story, not only about the women themselves but also about Jack London. She also provides fresh material, gleaned from interviews with London's descendants as well as archival material. Jack London's life has yet to be treated in a definitive biography.Stasz's well-researched study of the women in London's life and career offers a significant first step in adjusting the many erroneous or incomplete aspects of London biographical efforts.I strongly recommend this new contribution to London studies.

1-0 out of 5 stars academic mediocrity from a terrible writer -
Statz excelled at making London a turgid, boring figure in her last book - the unreadbale and hugely maligned American Dreamers. How she manages to continue to publish is beyond this reader and great fan of London. She has attacked other writers on London but it is about time she aplogised to us readers for having to wade through such a boring tome.Post-modern, pseudo-feminist .....Londonmustbe spinning in his grave. Give up Clarice- some teach, some write. You must be able to do one, surely? ... Read more

Product Description

Virtually all modern versions of the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table are derived from a single book: Sir Thomas Malory's Morte d'Arthur (1469), one of the world's most renowned literary works. Yet the author, a fifteenth-century knight, has remained an enigma for centuries. Existing historical records imply that Malory was a criminal—accused of rape, ambush, rustling, and attacks on abbeys—and was imprisoned for most of his life.

Using evidence from new historical research and deductions from the only known manuscript copy of Malory's celebrated work, Christina Hardyment brilliantly resolves the contradictions about an extraordinary man and a life marked equally by great achievement and devastating disgrace. Malory is the fascinating chronicle of a loyal soldier enmeshed in the tangled politics of the Wars of the Roses. It is the story of a connoisseur of literature and exemplary writer who created a masterpiece meant to inspire princes and knights to high endeavors and noble acts.

5-0 out of 5 stars plenty here for the historians and the literary historians, too
This is a book that general audiences can have hours of fun reading and historians, literary historians, Arthurians, and other scholars of all shades can have hours of fun arguing about (and I draw from personal experience). Most impressive is Hardyment's full-scale, detailed look at the context of the world in which Malory lived and wrote, exploring its political pressures, its social conventions, its cultural attitudes, and the ways it sought to authenticate itself. She's also adept at managing the physical evidence, reproducing for us (in word pictures and fine visual additions) the materiality of the world: its houses, its armor, its food, its diseases. She admits where her conclusions are romantic speculations (imagining Malory's amorous intrigues and/or military commitments) but places them within the context of existing evidence. The extensive endnotes and bibliography prove she's done her research and documented her sources. Literary critics might be hesitant to read as much of Malory's own personal attitudes from what's written in the 'Morte Darthur' as Hardyment does--even in the fifteenth century, authors were capable of irony, satire, creating fiction, and constructing narrative personae--and after a few hundred pages, the blur of names and titles makes one long for a glossary of proper names at the end, just to keep the dynasties and loyalties organized in one's mind. But none of this proves an impediment to the fine, clear prose, and in the end, Hardyment's imaginative reconstruction of a man of deep loyalties, strong moral fiber, romantic leanings, and nostalgia for a world where chivalry actually means something is persuasive and appealing and, on its own, offers an explanation for why the 'Morte Darthur' has such a lasting literary life. ... Product Description
Louise Brachmann is an almost-forgotten Romantic figure, a friend of Sidonie von Hardenberg and sister of the major 19th century German writer Novalis. Several of her family and friends died while she was still in her twenties, and she was forced to make a living by writing; Schiller published some of her poems. Unhappy love affairs, poor reception of her work, and uncertainties in daily life eventually led her to drown herself. Her stories, poems and death exemplify German Romanticism. Her sufferings were widely discussed, together with her radical ideas about the role of women in society and her support for Greek independence. This edition collects works that are critical of Enlightenment era views on nature, God, and death. The editor provides a critical assessment of Brachmann's importance within that context of the crisis of cultural values at the beginning of the 19th century, when established views on the family, the state and the power of reason were questioned. ...
