This book combines state facts along with craft suggestions to make it an excellent homeschool or classroom choice!
The name "New England" was coined by Captain John Smith, an Englishman who explored part of the area in the early part of the 1600s.The six states in the region are Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.In this book you will not only learn several key facts about each state, but you'll also find a couple of interesting crafts you can make.Facts included for each state in sidebar materials include the origin of the state's name, its flag, the capital, its nickname, the state motto, its size (in area), the state animal, bird fish, flower and tree and its major industry.

The crafts are "state related."For example in Providence Rhode Island there is a bug named Nibbles Woodaway or the Big Blue Bug that sits atop a pest control building in the city.You can create your own clay "Big Bug" with a few ingredients, many you may have on hand.Another interesting paper craft is of Vermont's Lake Champlain's Champ, a lake monster.You can cut him out of construction paper and have him swimming in a lake in no time flat.Each craft included a bit of history about a famous place, person or in the case of Champ, a mythical creature in the state's history.

This is a very interesting book in that it combines state facts and crafts.Several of the crafts are not the popular types children would gravitate to, but instead are those that would be of interest when doing a state related project.The only problem I found with this book is that some of the instructions were a tad vague and would be confusing to the lower intended age group.For example one of the templates says "enlarge 153%."A little bit of assistance might be required for a few of these crafts.This book is one in series of"Fun and Simple State Crafts." Established in 1940, it operates on a four-quarter per year program at ten weeks per quarter. This allows one to obtain an Associate's Degree in one and one half years or a Bachelor's Degree in three years. It is commonly referred to as New England Tech. The school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Back in 1940, Mr. Ernest G. Earle, the founder of what was to become New England Institute of Technology, stretched out his hand fewer than 20 times to congratulate the first class to complete his course in radio repair. The school consisted of three rented rooms on the sixth floor of an office building in downtown Providence. It's quite possible that the last thing on Mr. Earle's mind was the notion that in 60 years New England Institute of Technology would be a thriving college serving thousands of students from all around the country and the world. His goal was to provide practical, hands-on training at reasonable cost by training that would lead to a job that was a cut above the factory work that was the norm for the times.
