The story is narrated, in alternating chapters, by SharonGaldoni and her husband Paul. Sharon dies in a car crash in thefirst chapter and describes her new "improved" life in thehereafter. The improvement comes at a cost, a lingering grief over herseparation from her three-year-old son Kenny. Sharon's self-absorbedhusband Paul isn't attending adequately to the boy'supbringing. Kenny's nursery school teacher, Cheryl, responds to theboy's need for nurturing and tutors him.An affair ensues betweenPaul and Cheryl, a relationship that creates additional strain betweenPaul and his bereaved mother and sister-in-law. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Simply Wonderful Novel
Leaving This Life Behind is a timely reminder that good literature still exists today in a market dominated by mediocre genre writers. As Levine weaves his way back and forth between the "lives" of his two compelling main characters, one garners an entirely new outlook on the world and whatever comes after it.An excellent read, full of masterful imagery and anchored by a breathtaking plot that will leave you feverishly turning pages until the stunning conclusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking
I like the way this book treats life and death as part of the same continuum, weaving them both in and out of an interesting plot.I enjoyed this book emensly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Readable
Leaving This Life Behind is an exceptionally engaging novel.The style is highly accessible and flows smoothly, but it also contains a lot of interesting images and insights into human character.The author has no trouble making transitions between two substantially different narrators, and between the gritty realism of contemporary New York and a variety of other settings - including the mystical and the historical - which are rendered with moving detail and remarkable credibility.(A typical example of its talent for description occurs when the cab driver narrator describes being hailed this way: "At the intersection of 14th and 3rd, I'm hailed by a heavyset woman who flags me as if she were hand guiding a cargo plane down onto a runway.")The book also contains a view on life which, though it may not be fashionable in its lack of materialism, is striking for its originality and intensity.I highly recommend this book.Anyone who reads it will encounter insights that are unusual and memorable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps you thinking
It's a deceptive book -- as easy as it is to read, the ideas and concepts stay with you for a long time.It's not preachy or insistant that there is only one answer to the universe, but rather just uses the topic of reincarnation to open up your thinking to the meaning of life on earth ... and life after earth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leaving This Life Behind - a fulfilling read at many levels
I found Leaving This Life Behind to be a unique and fascinating novel, a page-turner which is thought-provoking, even inspirational.The plot is full of surprises--which I wouldn't want to reveal--but perhaps what is most surprising is that half of the novel is set in the hereafter.The novel is narrated, in alternating chapters, by Sharon Galdoni and her husband Paul.Sharon dies in a car crash in the first chapter--surprise number one, revealed--and for the rest of the novel narrates from the beyond.The depiction of the hereafter is very believable and convincing.Particularly fascinating are Sharon's past lives, portions of which she relives.Among other benefits, this helps her to understand the karmic reasons for her painful separation from her young son Kenny. Raising Kenny is now the sole responsibility of Paul, a New York City cabdriver who drinks heavily and has never been particularly tolerant of Kenny's developmental delays.Paul's struggles to become a better parent are gripping and very realistically portrayed.So are his difficulties in dealing with Sharon's mother and sister, both of whom are determined to play a part in Kenny's life.Paul is a gritty and at times outrageous character, and at bottom a better person than he'd care to admit. The two setttings--the hereafter and suburban and metropolitan New York--are brought together in an ending which is a fitting climax to this wonderful and well-written novel.I recommend it highly--to anyone who has ever pondered the meaning of life, and death--or to anyone who is in the market for a good read. ... Product Description
Beautifully and thoughtfully written, you may never see life, experience love or think about death in quite the same way after having read "slow dance with the wind".Of writing, the late author Gary Provost said, "Writing is not a visual art.It is a symphony, not an oil painting.It is the shattering; not the glass...it is the ringing; not the bell."

More than a hundred pages of entertaining and perceptive writing like this sampling:

"For You"

"For you--
I will be your eyes;
I will show you the light

I will explain what red is;
I will tell you about the beauty
and the brilliance of color

I will tell you how the sunsets
disappear and how the sunrise
magically returns every morning

I will make the ocean
so blue that you will feel it
in the depths of your soul

For you, I will shine a bright light
into the corners of things uncertain;
for you...I will bury the night."

Product Description
Have you ever felt the presence of someone who had died? Or dreamed something before it happened?Or had an uncanny sense that “I’ve been here before” about a place you’re visiting for the first time?

Sylvia Fraser is one of those people to whom mysterious events often happen - weird coincidences, glimpses into the future, apparent communication with the dead. In The Quest for the Fourth Monkey, Fraser not only shares these incidents but she also tries to understand them.

In each chapter, she deals with a “supernormal” topic, such as reincarnation or telepathy, by recounting her own experience, and then by searching for rational and scientific evidence to support the principles involved. Her research takes her into Western philosophy, Eastern mysticism, quantum and astro physics, biology, parapsychology and holistic medicine.Her range is astonishing. Historic figures such as Buddha, Hippocrates, William James and Carl Jung share the stage with today’s physicists and Nobel laureates.

Along with her own provocative anecdotes, Fraser recounts the remarkable stories of others whose experiences took them into startling realms.Nor does she shy away from re-examining the evidence supporting persons whose stories have been mistreated by history. These include psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich who discovered an energy called “orgone” that he believed could be used to treat cancer by boosting the immune system; Edgar Cayce who, in a trance, could diagnose illnesses and prescribe treatments for people hundreds of miles away in languages he didn’t know when conscious;Bridey Murpy, an eighteenth-century colleen who may - or may not - have reincarnated as a Colorado housewife.Then there are the identical twins, separated at birth, who coincidentally gave their dogs the same name, married and divorced women of the same name, married second wives of the same name, gave their first sons the same two names, had the same jobs, hobbies, likes and dislikes, even though they’d had no contact whatever until age thirty-nine.

In her process of self-discovery, Fraser not only invites us to share her journey, but she also challenges us to reexamine our own lives for the psychic and spiritual clues that we may have been missing. In so doing, we open a skylight to a Universe more wondrous and illuminating and exciting than we ever dared to imagine.

CONTENTS:

Telepathy: THE FAX OF NATURE

“Fraser’s undeniable talent . . .is everywhere in evidence. Relax and prepare to enjoy a fantastic, sometimes astonishing tale, expertly told.”- Quill & Quire

“An ambitious work in which Sylvia Fraser acts as a guide in the catacombs of the collective unconscious.In probing the world of the unseen, Fraser deftly explores the fallacies of a Western civilization blinkered by rationalism and the twin gods of science and technology.” - Joe Fisher, author of Hungry Ghosts.

Product Description
Is death the final event in human life, or does another existence follow? What are the signs and possible proofs of such continuity? Such questions have sparked speculation in philosophy, religion, art, and science throughout human history and remain a familiar concern for even the most casual observer of the human condition. In his provocative new book, Fred Frohock explores the possibility that our existence is neither defined by nor limited to the purely physical--nor is it terminated at death.

Fearlessly pursuing such a sensitive subject, Frohock suggests that death's domain may not be quite the "undiscovered country" lamented by Hamlet. He wades boldly into the debates between hardcore materialists and devout spiritualists; provides glimpses of recent findings in brain research, the so-called mind-body problem, and consciousness studies; and in general offers an idiosyncratic introduction to some of the most provocative and least understood aspects of what we call "conscious" life. In the process, he provides fresh insights into the narratives, claims, and conundrums associated with life after death, near-death and out-of-body experiences, reincarnation, and a host of psychic phenomena that continue to puzzle the experts.

Demonstrating a keen grasp of subjects ranging from neurochemistry to popular culture, Frohock is a sure-footed tour guide through a richly diverse field of research. He considers what past life regression therapy suggests about reincarnation, assessing the credibility of pioneering research by Brian Weiss and Ian Stevenson. He introduces readers to the work of the University of Virginia's Near Death Experience Project, with reports stretching back 35 years, and the Human Consciousness Project's study of 1,500 survivors of cardiac arrest. And he contemplates whether people in permanent vegetative states, like Terri Schiavo and Sunny von Bülow, are alive or not-and what these transitional states tell us about death.

Leavened with humor and a Renaissance-style intellect that draws in Tolstoy and Hemingway along with films like Solaris and Blade Runner, Frohock's deep meditations are deftly interposed with brief fictional interludes that humanize his book's more abstract dimensions while exploring claims about the supernatural. Approaching the world's most baffling subjects with a critical eye, an open mind, and an agnostic's heart, Beyond looks beyond the last threshold and points the way toward a better understanding of human existence. ...
