    The seller mailed the book in a very timely manner and the book was in the quality expressed by the posting. I am very glad that I have purchased from this seller because I ordered the book a week before my class started and had it in hand for the first class.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Expanding Literacy across the Content Areas
    I use this book as a resource for a continuing education grad class I teach. It is integral that K-5 teachers understand the nature of content area curriculum and not leave it for the secondary school teachers. This book is an excellent starting point in reaching the goals of content area curriculum in the K-5 grades that go beyond simply reading. The authors lay down the essentials to equip primary and elementary teachers with the background and tools needed to lay a solid foundation for working with informational text.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Reading for Information
    Reading for Information in Elementary Schools is an area that needs so much exposure and this titile does just that. 5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable resource
    I bought this book to bone up for the upcoming school year. I have been teaching fourth and fifth grade resource the last few years and I was a little apprehensive about returning to "word study" work after hearing that I'll be moving to second grade resource. This book is invaluable. Co-written in part by Gay Su Pinnell it provides most of the essential material included in all of the Fountas and Pinnell books we've used for years. But the key word is "essential" so it provides quicker and easier access, yet not watered down material, compared to their classic books. Pinnell and co-writer Patricia Scharer provide foundation and strategy material for both reading and writing blocks that no doubt you will use. Very valuable will be the appendix that lists books to use with emergent, early, and transitional readers. Highly recommended.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Resource
    This book belongs in every primary educators classroom.It is such a resourceful tool. The strategies and structures that readers need to understand books and the changes those readers experience as they move up the primary grades is discussed in this book.This book is really useful for that second grade teacher, who doesn't quite know how reading comprehension changes from first to second grade. This book provides the teacher with many strategies, planning and organizational tips.This is a necessary book.Quite informative.

Cris Tovani is an accomplished teacher and staff developer who writes with verve and humor about the challenges of working with students at all levels of achievement—from those who have mastered the art of "fake reading" to college-bound juniors and seniors who struggle with the different demands of content-area textbooks and novels.

    Enter Cris' classroom, a place where students are continually learning new strategies for tackling difficult text. You will be taken step-by-step through practical, theory-based reading instruction that can be adapted for use in any subject area. The book features:

    • anecdotes in each chapter about real kids with real universal problems. You will identify with these adolescents and will see how these problems can be solved;
    • a thoughtful explanation of current theories of comprehension instruction and how they might be adapted for use with adolescents;
    • a What Works section in each of the last seven chapters that offers simple ideas you can immediately employ in your classroom. The suggestions can be used in a variety of content areas and grade levels(6-12);
    • teaching tips and ideas that benefit struggling readers as well as proficient and advanced readers;
    • appendixes with reproducible materials that you can use in your classroom, including coding sheets, double entry diaries, and comprehension constructors.

    Product Description
    Concept Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) is a unique, classroom-tested model of reading instruction that breaks new ground by explicitly showing how content knowledge, reading strategies, and motivational support all merge in successful reading instruction. A theoretical perspective (engagement in reading) frames the book and provides a backdrop for its linkage between hands-on science activities and reading comprehension. Currently funded by the Interagency Educational Research Initiative (IERI), this model has been extensively class tested and is receiving national attention that includes being featured on a PBS special on the teaching of reading.

    Key features of this outstanding new volume include:

    *Theoretical Focus--CORI's teaching framework revolves around the engagement perspective of reading: how engaged reading develops and the classroom contexts and motivational supports that promote it.
    *Content-Area Focus--Although science is the content area around which CORI has been developed, its basic framework is applicable to other content areas.
    *Focus on Strategy Instruction--CORI revolves around a specific set of reading strategies that the National Reading Panel (2000) found to be effective. In some current CORI classrooms collaborating teachers implement all aspects of CORI and in other classrooms teachers implement just the strategy instruction component.
    *Illustrative Vignettes and Cases--Throughout the book vignettes and mini-case studies convey a situated view of instructional practices for reading comprehension and engagement. A detailed case study of one teacher and of the reading progress of her students is featured in one chapter.

    This book is appropriate for graduate and advanced undergraduate students in education and psychology, for practicing teachers, and for researchers in reading comprehension and motivation.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Immensely helpful
    I was looking to improve my reading comprehension skills and this book helped a lot.
    All the practice passages have detailed explanation about both right and wrong answers - which is very helpful.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpfull - buy it
    This is a very helpful book on Reading Section. One of the very few available ones on the market. I don't understand why there are so many books conserning LR and AR, and almost none conserning the reading. Reading was my most difficult section (as it is for many students- passages are long time is not enough, same problem..) and if there was more on the market about it I would have purchased it. Anyhow, this book is well written, explanatory, enough exercises.
    The reason why I rate it with 4, not 5 stars is because it is not LSAT specific, but it also tells about MCAT, GMAT, etc. Which is important when it comes to the length of passages in the excercise section which takes up 130 out of 180 pages from the book. There are passages of different lengths from 30 to 80 lines, covering the formats of the passages given on GMAT, MCAT, etc. But what we need for LSAT - are passages of 55 - 60 lines so we can properly time ourselves and as we all know on the LSAT - TIME IS EVERYTHING.
    In conclusion: helpful book - get it.
    P.S. If the publishers get to see that - consider improving it.

    4-0 out of 5 stars good book
    I was preparing for GMAT and was very in Reading Comprehension. This book was helful to me especially the LSAT passages which were difficult compared to GMAT passages. explanations were good.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Time-wasting if not skill-diminishing
    I've read this book for LSAT prep.While the selection of passages is excellent, crafting of questions is simply a bad joke.To be precise, it is mostly the answer choices that makes this book time-wasting, if not skill-diminishing.The answer choices in this book are just not the kind of choices that appear in an actual test.Especially annoying is that many "right" answer choices can be right only after a very very long stretch of logic, which NEVER happens in a real test.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent study tool

    Product Description

    Since its publication in 2000, Strategies That Work has become an indispensable resource for teachers who want to explicitly teach thinking strategies so that students become engaged, thoughtful, independent readers.In this revised and expanded edition, Stephanie and Anne have added twenty completely new comprehension lessons, extending the scope of the book and exploring the central role that activating background knowledge plays in understanding. Another major addition is the inclusion of a section on content literacy which describes how to apply comprehension strategies flexibly across the curriculum. The new edition is organized around four sections:

    Part I highlights what comprehension is and how to teach it, including the principles that guide practice, a review of recent research, and a new section on assessment. A new chapter, Tools for Active Literacy: The Nuts and Bolts of Comprehension Instruction, describes ways to engage students in purposeful talk through interactive read alouds,guided discussion and written response.
    Part II contains lessons and practices for teaching comprehension. A new first chapter emphasizes the importance of teaching students to monitor their understanding before focusing on specific strategies. Five lessons on monitoring provide a sound basis for launching comprehension instruction. At the end of each strategy chapter, the authors outline learning goals and ways to assess students' thinking, sharing examples of student work, and offering suggestions for differentiating instruction.
    Part III, Comprehension Across the Curriculum is new. Comprehension strategies are essential for content-area reading, where information can be challenging, and presented in unfamiliar formats. This section includes chapters on social studies and science reading, topic study research, textbook reading and the genre of test reading.
    Part IV shows that kids need books they can sink their teeth into and the updated appendix section recommends a rich diet of fiction and nonfiction, short text, kid's magazines, websites and journals that will assist teachers as they plan and design comprehension instruction

    Through its focus on instruction that is responsive to kids' interests and learning needs, the first edition of Strategies That Work helped transform comprehension instruction for teachers across the country. For them, this new edition will be a welcome extension of that work. Those coming to it for the first time will find a current and essential resource. When readers use these strategies, they enjoy a more complete, thoughtful reading experience. Engagement is the goal. When kids are engaged in their reading they enhance their understanding, acquire knowledge, and learn from and remember what they read. And best yet, they will want to read more!

    5-0 out of 5 stars Teacher Must-Have
    This book provides excellent strategies to teach Language Arts. I use this book with my M.Ed/Credentialing program at UCSD. This book is great for teachers who need simple strategies to implement into the classroom that will help develop students' reading comprehension skills. I especially like the different types of reading material that the authors suggest to utilize for teaching explicit reading strategies. With this book you will be fully equipped to teach students how to be better readers. Let's get kids moving beyond just summarizing the passage they read and really get into the realm of critical and reflective thinking.

    While not in pristine shape the price can't be beat. It reads just the same and I appreciate the rapid response.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Comprehension Strategies
    I absolutely love this book!It is one of the best strategies instruction books I have ever owned. I bought it to enhance my instructional strategies repertoire. The table of contents is well written.It is not full of jargon.It is well organized and easy to read. The initial forward contains a list of strategies and their use.The strategies are described and explain with the use of concrete examples.This makes is so easy to search for a strategy.For example, the making connections concept has over six different strategies that can be used with students.They are formated in the form of lessons so you don't have to rewrite the book to apply the strategy.Each strategy has a rational, guided practice, resources, and authentic work samples.Chapter 12 has an assessment component for assessing comprehension.

    I got this book for a class. It was very informational. It is text heavy, so there isn't a lot of charts and graphs. The vignette were really useful to make the text applicable to a classroom. I think the price could have been a little lower though. It was only a couple of dollars cheaper then my bookstore price.

    2-0 out of 5 stars Not That Impressed...
    This was just the kind of book I needed, but as it turned out, this particular one did not impress.The pages are not removable for easy copying, and there were some spelling mistakes that I came across in the few pages I actually wanted to use.Kind of surprising in a book written by a language arts teacher.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps kids accountable while building strategic reading...
    If you ask many English teachers, they implement a pedagogical strategy called "SSR" into their classroom Sustained, silent reading is where you have students sit and silently read for a certain period of time. Over the last four years of implementing this myself, I have seen a few problems with it. First of all, many students will just sit and stare at one page while daydreaming while others will struggle with what they are reading and end up finishing with no understanding.

    This book is helpful because it forces the "daydreamers" to read. There are certain pages such as "storyboards" where students are asked to draw or describe what they have read. This keeps them accountable.

    However, pages like these are also useful because it forces students who are having difficulty to analyze their understanding and perhaps implement strategies such as re-reading to help them understand. On the other hand, it is a great formative assessment for the teacher who can collect the sheets and see if what the students write or draw makes sense.

    I do not think this is too young for the higher grades. I happen to be a seventh grade teacher and have used this for several years now.

    3-0 out of 5 stars Recommendedage groups should be lowered
    I don't think this is a tool that is age-appropriate for the higher age groups (6th-8th) and really can't be (and no reason to be) modified for high school.There are several sheets to aid in illustrated stories, and effective worksheets to help with beginning to intermediate readers.

    5-0 out of 5 stars SSR reading helps
    This book is great. There are 50 ideas for keeping kids from just staring at the page when they are doing sustained silent reading. A way to be accountable, without assigning one more book report. The forms themselves may be for elementary and middle age, but the ideas will translate beautifully to the high school kids who are still staring at the pages pretending to read.

    5-0 out of 5 stars reading strategies learned
    I have researched many reading books for my child. This book is outstanding. Everyone seems to know what reading is about. Many parents buy reading books without much thought. This book is about reading with "intention" and "strategy". It's a skill-building training with clear methodology and objectives. It will systematically develop your child's true ability many other books won't do. It benefited my child tremendously. After applying this book for only one month, I started to see the difference. Now, they are the top readers in their classes. They often rank high in the Beestar weekly reading program (an excellent web site http://www.beestar.org). This fine book is truly thoughtful and is so effective. I highly recommend it. ... Read more
