Product Description
Radiology is a routine diagnostic procedure in all fields of clinical veterinary practice, and exotic medicine is no exception. Besides an increasing interest and concurrent demand for a higher level of care of these species, very little is reported in the scientific literature about normal radiographic patterns, and radiographic abnormalities are generally limited to case reports.

Clinical Radiology of Exotic Companion Mammals is designed to fill this gap. It provides a practical resource for veterinarians wishing to add these special species to their clinical practice, and a ready reference for those already including those species among their caseload. Clearly labeled normal images will aid anyone interested in comparative radiographic anatomy, and the techniques section will help overcome difficulties related to the smaller size of many exotic companion mammals.

Features of the book include:

  • wide range of exotic mammal species beyond ferrets, rabbits, and rodents, including species such as marsupials, hedgehogs and potbellied pigs
  • a review of the basic principles of radiology, equipment, radiologic techniques and patient positioning helpful for optimizing exotic companion mammal radiography
  • an extensive review of both normal and pathologic radiographic patterns. Some of the latter are accompanied by clinical or surgical images to aid the practitioner in familiarization with a wide range of both common and uncommon lesions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Basic non-vascular interventions at once
All types of nonvascular interventions are covered in this book. I prefer it for both the beginners and experienced workers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vascular intervensionalists book of problems and solutions
Together with the book by Karim Valji (Vascular and interventional radiology, ISBN 0721670032) this book forms a formidable addition to any prospective interventionalist's library. The book essentially forms two parts. An introduction describing in a review format some common fields of interventional radiology such as lower extremity arterial disease, but also enlightens the user on the highly busy part of interventional radiology - that related to dialysis vascular access and its importance for the dialysist and (no lesse important) for the patient with a dialysis access. The second part of the book describes case stories with appropriate images and narrative content. A few areas seem a little different from modern approach with almost no vascular CT or even mention of multi-detector vascular CT, an important emergent technique. Also - albeit this may be from my lack of familiarity with American settings - a curious case of a patient with a brain abscess is related and the sequelae of that is never really mentioned. In general the book is informative, well written, clear and with a lot of interesting and highly educational examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best interventional radiology texts available.
I found this a great book on vascular radiology as a 1st yr resident and an unbeatable resource for the radiology boards. It's easy to read, and easy to learn from. It should be in every radiolgist's personal library! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written by one of the radiology gurus
This book is a great resource, however, it is very similar to the chapters on skeletal radiology in Brant and Helms. I don't know if it is worth buying this book for residents already using Brant and Helms, but it is definitely a solid well written book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
I'm a first-year radiology resident and am rotating through MSK right now. My attending suggested this book to me, as did more senior residents in my program, so I figured it was worth a shot.

The thing that I love the most about this book is its informal tone. There have been times when I've caught myself laughing out loud because of a funny story that Helms relates. He's not shy about using mnemonics, either, which is different from most text books --- it's nice to have an acronym to assist with memorizing, say, the bajillion causes of lytic bone lesions. It feels like an easy read because I'm not trudging through endless text about anatomical relationships and the finer details of MR sequences. I don't deny that those things are important to learn. They are. However, for a novice like myself, I think it's best to start with a more simplistic book geared toward mastering the basics. The fine details can (and will) come later with more advanced books as you progress through your residency training.

Anyway, in summary, this is an excellent read for a beginning radiology resident!

4-0 out of 5 stars pocket size for the large hardcover
This book just gives you a more detailed review from the fundamentals of diagnostic radiology, the large hardcover. if this is your specific study this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars CHEAP
The last edition was outstanding and extremely popular, although it was identicle to the msk chapters in brant and helms.Unfortunately with the new edition they went very cheap with the paper quality and thus the image quality suffers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Sense of Syntesis
I'm a radiology resident, and tried to read many musculoskeletal books, all quite abrangent, but hard to read. I found incredible how Dr. Helms could make such a syntesis of musculoskeletal radiology. Of course many chapters are too small. For example, the chapter about MR in shoulder is insuficient. But other chapters, like the chapter about MR in the examination of the knee is amazingly complete in an incredible small number of pages! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good solid grounding
Despite the heavily praised Neuroradiology Requisites, not all book in this series are useful.
Genitourinary Requsites is well worth reading as bachground for a Urology run or in preparation for Radiology specialist exams. It follows the style of Neuroradiology, with well placed tables of the important facts and differentiaals, good images and an easy to read style - but at less than quarter the size it is well designed for the subject.
It'll give you a good background and system of interpretation, plus some knowledge on the important differentials, which is really what you need for the Australasian Radiology Part 2 exams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great Requisites book!
Genitourinary Radiology - The Requisites continues in the tradition of the other books in the series by offering a large amount of relevant information in an easy-to-read form. The book can be read in the firstweek of a rotation for a quick but solid foundation in GU radiology.Keypoints are summarized in boxes, and the images shown are of good quality. 5-0 out of 5 stars Emergency Radiology
Excellent resource.A gold standard for the field of radiological interpretation.Especially beneficial to newcomers to the field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Emergency Radiology
I am a PA in the ED and of what I have read so far I have found this book to be very helpful and well constructed. It is an easy read and overal worth the money. It is probably best suited for someone who has some experience with x-rays and wants to expand futher or review. It does cover some basics and a lot of advanced stuff (CT, MRI, some nuclear scans) as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable
As a practicing family/urgent care physician, this book has proven invaluable on numerous occasions. This book is easy to read with a great number of radiographs to look through.
I highly recommend this book to family physicians and internists
looking to add to their library collection. It is practical and a real time-saver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal text
Easily the best EM radiology book I've seen.Well-illustrated, well-written, well-referenced, addresses current imaging controversies, and is full of great teaching points.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent text for emergency med residents
I'm a second year emergency med resident, and I love this book. It's written for and aimed at emergency physicians. There are a lot of black and white photos of x-rays, CTs, and some ultrasound. There are also many hand-drawn illustrations that highlight what the radiograph photos are showing.Because this book is written by EM docs, there is a focus on clinical treatment. The text really focuses on what's important in interpreting and managing pts with these radiographic findings. There are a lot of photos, illustrations, and easy-to-read useful tables.I only wish that there were more ultrasound photos, but despite that criticism, I can confidently recommend this book to any serious EM resident. ... It updates and complements the earlier Medical Radiology volume on the Radiology of Peripheral Vascular Diseases. Some background information is provided on vascular biology and the facilities required for safe endovascular practice, along with guidance on consent issues. Further chapters deal with endovascular treatment in particular arterial territories, and include the evidence in favour of or against the use of specific treatments. The most up-to-date evidence surrounding endovascular aneurysm repair is discussed. There are also chapters on venous interventions, including the endovascular management of varicose veins. This book will be of value both to interventional radiologists and to vascular surgeons with an interest in endovascular techniques.

Product Description
Building on the great success of the first edition, Paediatric Radiology for MRCPCH and FRCR retains the popular pre-existing structure of the book, but presents an improved variety of clinical cases as well as updated text in-keeping with advances in medical practice and technology. As before, the book consists of 100 clinical cases, preceded by a section on image interpretation. Each case is presented in exam format, with the answers overleaf, supplemented in every case by salient radiological and clinical summaries of each condition - the "hot lists".Chapters on non-accidental injury and radiation protection have been included as these are highly relevant to paediatric radiology practice. Many of the cases have been replaced with alternatives that are more relevant to the paediatrician or radiologist in-training. There is more emphasis on cross-sectional imaging, as candidates are increasingly encountering these sophisticated imaging tests in postgraduate exams. In particular, the authors have increased the number of cases using Magnetic Resonance Imaging. A large number of the images have been updated with better quality ones, and all the clinical information has been reviewed and updated accordingly.Further improvements for this second edition include the addition of at least one reference per case, improved indexation, and a greater number of annotated diagrams to improve understanding of the more complex images. Paediatric Radiology for MRCPCH and FRCR continues to be a popular exam-oriented text for radiologists and paediatricians alike. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly edited, many images are of poor quality or are poor examples
I recently completed my Radiology residency training and intended to use this book to teach our new residents about Pediatric Radiology.I found it to be poorly edited and difficult to read. The author's first language is most likely not English, and I seriously question whether the editor actually read the text. Many words are used in the text that I was taught to never use by more than one chest radiologist - e.g., the word "infiltrate" is used multiple times. In addition, many of the images are very poor examples of the pathology described.Sloppy editing: e.g., Fig 2-54 describes 3 images with a "right" upper lobe lesion that is clearly in the LEFT lung.On some pages, four images are labeled in clockwise direction A-B-C-D, and on other pages in the same chapter four images are labeled in clockwise direction A-C-B-D.I returned the book after struggling to get through the first two chapters (although maybe the following chapters are better?)

2-0 out of 5 stars Too superficial and disorganized
This is one of the Requisite series that is not up to par. The book is too brief and this really shows when reading the text, which is abrupt to the extreme. This makes for a very tedious read, and you often have to reread the same paragraph multiple times to figure out the point. There is also a noticable paucity of pictures (big no-no in radiology), and the illustrations provided are of poor quality. I recommend you physically pick up this book and browse thru it before plunking down your hard-earned cash. Addition to review: I recommend checking out Donnelly's Fundamentals of Pediatric Radiology. It's smaller and cheaper, well-written, and much better in terms of content and practical facts for pediatric radiology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for radiology residents
As I complete my radiology residency nothing has been more instrumental than the Requisites Series.I consider the collection of books as essential reading for radiology residents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Everyday Reference
As a neuroradiologist for 26 years in a busy private practice setting, The Requisites has been the perfect "sit on the desk beside me" reference book. The third edition now replaces the second in that spot in my reading room. My test for such a reference is can I find what I need quickly, then dictate the case and move on to the next? This book is perfect for that need. The previous editions were also excellent for my encounters with CAQ's. I find the humor refreshing, especially when studying for the exam. The tables and DDX boxes are perfect for private practice. I have read about half of this new third edition and it seems to be appropriately updated. The quality of the paper is commensurate with the modest price of the book, but it holds up in everyday use. I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars 3rd edition cheap print job
The paper is like standard laser paper and the pictures and text are washed out in appearance. The font also was decreased in size, which further makes it difficult to read. It would have been better to print on better quality paper with a larger font and more contrast. The slight increase in cost for the consumer would have been worth it. I returned this book after I called and asked if they made a mistake in the printing, but they said the book was intended as I described it.

Use an older version or one of the many other introductory neuroradiology texts. Even the preface to the current edition of this book states that most of the text is factually unchanged except for the stroke chapter.

2-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your money...too basic...not enough pictures!!
SKIP this textbook (unless you get it free; even then, it is a waste of space on your bookshelf). This book (2nd edition) is lacking in quality pictures. There are not enough examples, and the pictures that are included are grainy and low resolution. In addition, the clinical correlation and text explanation of the various disease processes are quite basic and out of of date with respect to Neurology/Neurosurgery clinical issues.Everyone seems to rave about the "humor and jokes" in this book but I found them to be corny and uninspiring.Personally, I like my comedy delivered by standups, actors, and friends...not by these 2 authors.

So what do I use on a daily basis? As a Neurologist and Clinical Neuroimager, I read 25-30 neuroimaging MRI/CT studies on a daily basis ranging from routine outpatient studies for evaluation of headache and back pain to complex inpatient neuro-oncology, neurosurgical and acute stroke cases.

I highly recommend EXPERTddx: Brain and Spine: Published by Amirsys®, which is much better for having with you next to your PACS station as you read images.Lots of great examples, and written with the neuroimager in mind as you scroll through images and pick out abnormalities (i.e. what is the differential for T1 hyperintense lesions within the vertebral bodies...the book lays out the DDx with text and pictures to help you).

In addition, the Diagnostic and Surgical Imaging Anatomy: Brain, Head and Neck, Spine is excellent for learning and reviewing neuroanatomy from the standpoint of imaging conventions with many excellent pictures using high quality scans (CT, CTA, 3T MRI, DSA).

As a reference text, Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain and Spine (2 Volume Set), does a great job with physics of MRI and also a much more comprensive review of clinical-imaging-pathology correlation.

You might say "Requisites is only ~$100" and the books I've recommended are much more. However, if you plan to be a serious and competent neuroimager, you need the right learning tools and reference materials.Don't skimp on quality. As a clinical imager, it is our responsibility to the patient to be as highly trained and qualified as possible. That means not only training with good resources, but also maintaining our knowledge base with the best availavble reference books, CME, and online training materials that are available.Make the right choice and arm yourself with the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Text, terrible binding
Our RAdiology residency has this text as a reading for book club and of all of us who purhcased the book either this year or in prior years, the binding fell apart within weeks.Unacceptable for any hardbound textbook. Also, the authors are somewhat clever, however I noticed that when you're really focusing in, that some of the comments become distracting--I've even had some of my attendings say you should blacken them out as you go through.

Otherwise, a good, concise, well-laid out text.I would recommend except to expect the binding to fall apart regardless of how hard you try....

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book, but not for people with low attention span...
First of all, this is a good book. It covers most of the topics a 1st year radiology resident needs to know. However, it wanders too much on shallow comments and -supposedly funny- jokes that only distracted me from my study. I'm a person who struggles to keep her concentration, I have a poor attention span, if you will, so when I was reading something complex (as most of the subjects in neuroradiology are) and then the authors ended up with a lame joke, it was as if everything I just read became lost. That may be 'my' limitation, as I mentioned, not a real flaw of the book, but I think people who, like me, need a more 'clasically' structured and 'traditionally' written text, should be warned that this volume of the Requisites series isn't the most adequate to suit their way of study. ...
