Product Description
This work is full of things better left unsaid: hackneyed phrases, idioms battered into senselessness, infuriating Gallicisms, once-familiar quotations and tags from the ancient classics. It makes a formidable list, amplified as it is with definitions, sources, and indications of the cliches, venerability in every case.Amazon.com Review
Clichés, the "coin(s) so battered by use as to be defaced," areanathema to Eric Partridge. He says, "their ubiquity is remarkable and ratherfrightening," and while he likens proverbs to expressions of wisdom, hesays, clichés are instances of "inanition."They all sound familiar, forsuch is the nature of the cliché. What, forexample, does "in the event of an emergency" add, beyond verbosity, instead of "inan emergency"? And so, from "abject apology" to "your guess is as good asmine," he lists, explains, and categorizes more than 2,000 trite and tiredphrases to avoid "at all costs." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A more comprehensive title to consider
I haven't read Partidge's "Dictionary of Cliches" (the four stars is for the concept), but I just ordered a more comprehensive similar book called "The Facts on File Dictionary of Cliches" by Christine Ammer. Partridge cites 2,000 examples. By contrast, Ammer lists twice as many. No matter which book you choose, such a dictionary is indispensable to anyone who loves words, cares about the language, writes or edits for a living or has aspirations to write the Great American Novel. I spent the last 14 years as a professional copy editor and am now engaged in writing a first novel. I am meticulous to the point of anal-retentiveness, but cliches still creep into my writing -- so surreptitiously that they sometimes slip past me. I would speculate that every writer has exactly the same problem. A dictionary like Ammer's or Partridge's is the equivalent of a can of Raid to ferret out those miscreants and kill them dead. In answer to the earlier reviewer, even smart people can lapse into falling back on cliches. Because they are so insidious and widespread, they are at the forefront of our minds whenever we write just about anything. A dictionary of cliches can help keep you vigilant and on your guard.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book but what's the point?
As always, Eric Partridge does a first class job putting this book together. But why do we need a dictionary of cliches?Partridge says so that we know what phrases to avoid using at all costs.Well, if you're not smart enough to know the phrase you're using is a cliche, you're definitely not the type of person who will read this book.

This book does make for a good bathroom reader, though. ... Read more

Product Description
The power of words in politics is well known, and Lend Me Your Ears, the fourth edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Political Quotations, brings together both words of wisdom and things that might have been better left unsaid. This unique reference not only charts the most influential political events of recent times through the things people said about them - including an international financial crisis and a watershed in American presidential politics - but also digs deeper than ever into the rich heritage of political history from around the world.

A mouth-watering collection for anyone with an interest in history and politics, Antony Jay has assembled both a crash course in political wisdom past and present, and a treasure trove of politicians' blunders and put-downs. The book showcases a who's who of politics, covering everyone from Napoleon to Barack Obama, plus such notables as Mahatma Gandhi, Dorothy Parker, George Washington, Charles de Gaulle, Juan Perón, and Jean-Paul Sartre. The quotations cover every facet of political life--the pivotal and momentous, the sincere, the bemused, the tongue-in-cheek, and the downright rude. With 5,000 quotations in all and 300 new to this edition, Lend Me Your Ears is the most comprehensive and up-to-date resource for political quotations available. It also includes an essay by the political journalist Matthew Parris and keyword and subject indexes to help in tracing just the right quote.

New quotations include:
'The inherited and permanent fact that North America speaks English.' Otto von Bismarck, when asked what was the greatest political fact of modern times
'British jobs for British workers.' Gordon Brown
'If I misspoke that was just a misstatement.' Hillary Rodham Clinton
'You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.' Rahm Emanuel
'A prince never lacks legitimate reasons to excuse his failure to keep his word.' Niccolò Machiavelli
'We are not going to give up our country for a mere X on a ballot. How can a ballpoint pen fight with a gun?' Robert Mugabe

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BUY THIS FOR YOUR KINDLE!!!!!
TERRIBLE formatting for the Kindle!! For example, you can't search for a phrase, since the Kindle version isn't indexed. There's no Table of Contents, and even the Contents of Authors pages aren't hyper-linked, so there's no way to even get to a specific author. I wouldn't have given it even *one star*, if I'd had that option! I have deleted it from my Kindle, and I'm glad I didn't pay much for it! What a waste!!

1-0 out of 5 stars What a mess
Don't waste your money. This book was obviously digitized by a computer. It is full of misprints, typos and misspellings, to the point that it is more often than not unintelligible. The formatting is terrible and there is no working table of contents. What a disappointment.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not ready for Kindle
This kindle version is not well set up for the kindle. The search results are hard to read; the table on contents are not hyperlinked; very difficult to use and browse.

Look for a better / different version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive but mostly ancient--worth 3.5 stars
This is a fine book, loaded with familiar (and some unfamiliar) quotations. Many of them are ancient-demonstrating the wisdom of the past.
[Note: all the quotes below are from Familiar Quotations, John Bartlett, Little, Brown & Co., Boston, 1968]

Frequently, they reveal who said a familiar bit of wisdom:
p. 86a: "Every man is like the company he is wont to keep."Euripides, Phoenix, fragment 809
or
p. 91a: "Let each man exercise the art he knows. You cannot teach a crab to walk straight."Aristophanes, Peace, 421 B.C., l.1083
or
p. 74b: "A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step."Lao Tzu, The Way of Lao Tzu, p. 64

Sometimes there are several saying much the same thing in different words:
p. 125: "While we stop to think, we often miss our opportunity."Publilius Syrus, Maxim 185
vs.
p. 125: "You should hammer your iron when it is glowing hot. (Publilius Syrus, Maxim 262;
and
p. 123: "Once a word has been allowed to escape, it cannot be recalled."Horace, xviii, 71
vs.
p. 123: "It is as easy to recall a stone thrown violently from the hand as a word which has left your tongue."(Menander [343-292 B.C.], Fragment
or.
p. 123: "Thoughts unexpressed may sometimes fall back dead; but God himself can't kill them when they're said." Will Carlton, The First Settler's Story, 1895-1912, st. 21
and
As geographers, Sosius, crowd into the edges of their maps parts of the world which they do not know about, adding notes in the margin to the effect that beyond this lies nothing but sandy deserts full of wild beasts, and unapproachable bogs. (Plutarch [46-120 A.D.], Lives, Aemilius Paulus, Section 5, quoted in Familiar Quotations by John Bartlett, Little, Brown & Co., Boston, 1968, p. 136a.)
vs.
"So geographers, in Afric maps
With savage pictures fill their gaps,
And o'er unhabitable downs
Place elephants for want of towns."
p. 136a: Jonathan Swift, On Poetry, A Rhapsody, 1733,

Some are humorous as well as wise:
p. 129: "I was shipwrecked before I got aboard."(Seneca, 8 B.C.-65 A.D., 87,1, Epistles
and
p. 126: "You cannot put the same shoe on every foot."Publilius Syrus, Maxim 596, first century B.C.
and
p. 125: "It is well to moor your bark with two anchors."Publilius Syrus, Maxim 119

Some are reminiscent of other famous sayings or quotes:
p. 108: "Moderation in all things."Publius Terentius Afer, c.190-159 B.C., Andria [The Lady of Andros] l.61 reminds me of Aristotle's Golden Mean or the Tibetan Buddhist Middle Way etc.
and
p. 107: "Wise men profit more from fools than fools from wise men; for the wise men shun the mistakes of fools, but fools do not imitate the successes of the wise. (Marcus Porcius Cato, the Elder, 234-149 B.C., from Plutarch's Lives, Cato, Section 8 which is reminiscent of Oscar Wilde's statement.

Some are quite practical:
p. 127: "Everything is worth what its purchaser will pay for it"Publilius Syrus, 1st century BC, Maxim 847
and
p. 123: "He who has begun has half done. Dare to be wise; begin!"Horace, ii, 40, Epistles, book I
and
p. 108: "There is nothing so easy but that it becomes difficult when you do it reluctantly."Terence Publius Terentius Afer, c.190-159 B.C., l.805

Some are philosophical:
p. 83a: "The good befriend themselves."Sophocles, Oedipus at Colonus, l.309
and
p. 126: "Every day should be passed as if it were to be our last."Publilius Syrus, Maxim 633

Some are surprisingly ahead of their time:
p. 107: "Those who know how to win are much more numerous than those who know how to make proper use of their victories."Polybius [c.208-126 B.C.], History, X, 36
and
p. 82b: "Knowledge must come through action; you can have no test which is not fanciful, save by trial." Sophocles, Trachiniae, l.592, {Which sounds like scientific empiricism to me.}

Some are quite profound:
p. 81b: "How dreadful knowledge of the truth can be when there's no help in truth!"Sophocles [c.495-405 B.C.] Oedipus Rex, l.316
and
p. 70b: "It takes a wise man to recognize a wise man."Xenophanes IX [570-475 B.C.], from Diogenes Laertius

And my personal favorite (that I quote frequently):
p. 134: "Pygmies placed on the shoulders of giants see more than the giants themselves."Lucan [39-65 A.D.], The Civil War, book II, 10 [Didacus Stella] ... Read more

I didn't care for this book.I expected to get quotes that I had heard before or made sense to me.I didn't feel I got either.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book
This is an excellent book full of great material. It was published in 1901 and has mostly English authors, plus a few from the Continent and America. The earliest author I found was Chaucer, and Shakespeare is quoted most frequently. There's no table of contents, but the quotes are printed alphabetically by topic- Abashed, Abbots, Abdication, so you can search for a topic you're interested in. You're told exactly where each quote comes from- e.g. Milton: Par. Lost, Bk. viii., line 561. The back of the book has an Index to Authors and an Index to Quotations. There are 2138 quotes in the book. And you can get this wonderful book for the price of... free!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book!
I was enthralled by this book! I loved looking at the large photographs of all kinds of artwork in the Library of Congress, much of it on the walls and ceilings. The descriptions were descriptive, factual, and very interesting. It made me want to visit the Library of Congress again and pay better attention to my surroundings!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Long Overdue Compilation

If you go to the Library of Congress, bring your binoculars. There is some beautiful work with exquisite detail high above your head. You can buy post cards of it or pick up pamphlets that show and describe the more outstanding works.A lot of it is just, well, "there" with no context. At last, someone, John Cole, who has been a tireless promoter of libraries though his work at The Center for the Book, has put it all together.

For me, it was not so much the inscriptions, but the ability to actually see the detail of these wonderful examples of classical public art.

Interestingly, the list of artists at the back shows very few name recognition artists. Some are known for studying with the famous. Quite a few have other large scale works in state capitol buildings, libraries and other cultural institutions, parks, etc.

One draw back is that at the maps in the end do not note the locations of the works, you have to flip back and forth for that. Another is that while this book would have been more expensive in a larger format, the content would be much better presented if it were.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful pictures and descriptions
I have wanted a book of pictures of The Library of Congress.I was happy when a colleague let me know of this book.I have always felt that I couldn't spend enough time in The Library of Congress to get all the information that is just posted on the walls. This book has helped me to gather a lot of that. This book is a must for anyone that wants good quotes for their own libraries.

Product Description
If you have ever stared a page that remains stubbornly blank; if you have ever wondered why writers write, or whether good writers are born or made; if you are a novelist, playwright, poet, or journalist, or simply delight in the written word, The Writer’s Quote book is for you. Whether you keep it in your office, on your coffee table, next to your keyboard or your bed, this rich compendium of over one thousand quotations will inspire, invigorate, and illuminate the often challenging, sometimes humorous, but always fascinating task of those who bring words to life.

From William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway to Doris Lessing and Joyce Carol Oates, more than five hundred published writers put pen to paper on what the literary life is all about. Selections come from seasoned professionals as well as those just establishing their voice, and they represent a variety of nationalities and genres.

The book is divided into three sections. The first part is devoted to the creative process, including thoughts on where writers get their ideas, the role of inspiration, what kind of people write, and where talent comes from. In part two, the subject shifts to writing as a craft. Here, authors ponder the creation of protagonists and points of view, the writing of dialogue, setting and description, creating plots, and the anatomy of style. The final third of the book deals with the challenges and rewards that come with the writing life. Subjects in this section include the economic realities of writing, classes, conferences, and workshops, dealing with rejection and bad reviews, writing habits and rituals, despair, alcohol, and suicide, and fame.

Articulated with elegant metaphor, in straightforward prose, or with wry wit, the carefully selected and thoughtfully organized quotations come together to form a narrative that entertains, informs, and in the case of aspiring writers, shows the way to better writing. ... Read more

Product Description
Immortal Words is an anthology of history's most memorable, uplifting or thought-provoking quotations from all ages and nations. The texts are drawn not only from the works and words of great writers, thinkers and orators, but also from less well-known sources such as gravestones, book dedications, speeches and political manifestos, letters and diaries, inscriptions and chance remarks. Each of the 370 quotations is accompanied by an extended annotation that tells the story of the speaker or explains the circumstances that gave rise to the quotation. The words and sentiments expressed have been used to encapsulate the human condition, to inspire great works or deeds in times of hardship, or simply reflect the spirit of the time - they will live with you and inspire you day by day, from one year's end to the next. Sample entries include: Marcus Aurelius -Nowhere can a man find a quieter or more untroubled retreat than in his own soul'. Martin Luther King -I have a dream'. John F. Kennedy -Ask not, what your country'. John Gillespie Magee, Royal Air Force pilot, 1941 -High Flight'. Ronald Reagan -Tear down his wall'.Isadora Duncan - on her sickbed, writes a feverishly passionate letter to her lover, the actor Gordon Craig. Mother Teresa of Calcutta -Life is'.
