Lovely Book!
As an educator, I feel that this is an important book for students and teachers who do NOT speak French, but who should be aware of the richness and diversity of French literature.

Useless
The translations are adequate, but who likely to purchase this book would be satisfied without the original French?For quotations, many of which are epigrammatic, this is essential because the translations are never going to capture or reproducetheir Gallic concision and lucidity.The English is there just to get you in the door, but without the French to savor, what's the point?And if you don't know any French at all, you just read the rectos.And another thing.The single entry Ms. Dingle offers from Descartes is "I think, etc."Most useful.Overall, a much better choice is A Book of French Quotations With English Translations, compiled by Norbert Guterman.It's out of print, but still available very reasonably from used book dealers.It does lack a subject index, which I've always found annoying. ... Who said it about what?
This is a great book if you're trying to think who said "Beat him to death, the dog! He's a reviewer"(1). Or perhaps you wonder "What Makes a good writer of history is a guy who is suspicious." (2)Or maybe even who said "Every man is a poet when he is in love." (3) In this book, almost any subject you can think of will have a corresponding catergory with a few good quotes. If you're writing a paper or would just like to know who has said all these wonderful things, buy this book. You'll enjoy it.

Mother of All Quotation Book
This is the biggest, most comprehensive book of quotes in existence and certainly in my collection of 400+ quotation books, dating back to 1590 (I just found out that the library of Congress has 150 quotation books.) It has well over 50,000 quotations, is organized by subject, and is close to 3000 pages.

This book, in one of it's edition prefaces, makes it clear that it is not a book of familiar quotations. It is not uncommon, that you will find a subject area which has several pages of fine print quotations dedicated to it, in comparison to a handful of quotes that are found in the average collection.

If you consider the book, based on the cost per quotation, it's actually a very good deal.

Because it is so comprehensive, some of the quotes are classics, some are highly familiar, but to me, the gems are the unusual ones, all with excellent source information. It's amazing that such a vast compendium does such a good job, and that it was done before the age of computers. (First ed was in the 30's.)

If you want the biggest and best, this is it, whether it goes by the Macmillan name or the Home book of Quotations name. The only thing you will be lacking will be the most recent quotes. So.... get a recent Simpsons Conemporary Quotations, and maybe Justin Kaplan's Bartletts, and the Thesaurus of Quotations, and you should be in pretty good shape, quotation colection-wise . A quote for every occasion
Of all of the books of quotations I own, this is the one I refer to the most.

The quotations are organised alphabetically by author (or by attribution) so, if you are in the mood for Dr Samuel Johnson, you can feast on his wit readily:

'Their thoughts are often new, but seldom natural.'

Or, if you are seeking something particularly apposite from Abraham Lincoln:

'The ballot is stronger than the bullet.'

If you know the quote, or particular key words, but not the author, the index will assist.

Consider this definition of a proverb by Thomas Fuller:

'Much matter decocted into a few words.'

Highly recommended to those who like their language leavened with wit.
