Product Description
A MUST HAVE for every machine quilter. At last, a detailed road map to skilled machine quilting, written by one of the top quilters in the field. Distinguished quilter Diane Gaudynski serves up a practical new approach to quilting by machine. Based on her popular machine quilting series in American Quilter magazine, this book gives readers the ins and outs of creating a design that instantly improves accuracy and fluidity of line. This international prize-winning quilter, author, lecturer, and teacher debunks six common myths about machine quilting. Holding nothing back, Diane includes techniques for several charming unmarked free-hand, free-motion designs, such as 'headbands,' 'bananas,' 'Dianeshiko,' spirals, leaves, fronds, and clamshells. Quilters will especially enjoy the author's detailed description of echo quilting and echo-quilted feathers. Diane states her goal is to add to the quilter's knowledge of machine-quilting skills and solve some common problems. She says, 'Dispelling some myths, learning some simple aids and techniques, and tackling the job in an organized and informed way will allow you to master this most basic of machine tasks.' ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gaudynski's Machine Quilting Guidebook--Quilt Savvy
This book offers great, closeup details of free-motion quilting techniques. Diane's down-to-earth, "yes, you can do this!!" attitude makes virtually any machine quilter feel like they CAN tackle new techniques with confidence!! From the Diane-shiko design to the terrifickly-horrible-to-stitch feathers, she faces each technique headon and breaks down the creation into workable stages. Again, her "Yes, you can do this" attitude is the common thread throughout the book. After pouring over her every word for about 2 weeks, I delved into very detailed, quilted borders on a T-shirt quilt I was working on for a customer.....and now I can proudly say "DONE!" to echo quilting and a beautiful free-motion shell border, all thanks to Diane!! A must-have publication for any quilter's library--worth every cent!! This comes from a machine-quilter 60-year old "student" who has been quilting for over 35 years. I'm STILL learning, and this book inspired me to keep learning and trying the techniques!!

5-0 out of 5 stars machine quilting book
I borrowed this book from a friend, while I was learning to machine quilt.I liked it so much that I decided I wanted to have my own copy to refer back to when needed.Easy to read and makes a lot of sense.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money
I purchased this book after reading all the stellar reviews here but was very disappointed in the actual product. There are lots of photos in the book showing her beautiful quilting, but very little in the way of actual hands-on directions on how to achieve those results.I consider myself an experienced free motion quilter, yet find the lack of "step-by-step" guidance that I was expecting very frustrating.I had been hoping for more quilting details, maybe even drawings that show directional arrows, especially for creating the fabulous feathers shown throughout the book.Don't buy this book if you are a beginner, you will never be able to figure anything out!You are better off purchasing a DVD that shows you "how-to" steps in video format, or go on You Tube and find some free motion quilting videos for free!

1-0 out of 5 stars How to make an Amish Quilt...
I would love to make an Amish Quilt, if this book ever gets here, maybe I will.....

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fabulous book filled with beautiful quilts & photo
There are patterns (templates and instructions) for 80 quilts, but the book would be worth it just for the quilt photographs (of collectible older Amish quilts). The colors and design are fabulous -- this is really an art book as much as a quilting book.

In addition, there are essays describing aspects of Amish life, with photographs to illustrate, and an attempt is made to connect the patterns on the quilts with the features and landscape of Amish life -- the center diamond, for example, is compared to a field waiting to be harvested as viewed from a certain angle.

I will treasure this book for years to come and plan to make some quilts using it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Amish Quilts
I recommend this book to any experienced or inexperienced quilter--especially those who are interested in the Amish people. It has excellent, easy to follow patterns that are all about the same size, and itincludes some beautiful quilting designs that are also easy to follow andeasy to use. The ideas for color schemes and traditional Amish patterns arevery useful. I especially liked the way pictures were included in order toillustrate the origins of certain quilt designs. For instance, a picture ofa barn window is included with the pattern that represents a barn window. Ifound the religious themes in the book, and in the quilts themselves, veryinteresting. I really enjoyed using this book, and I am very satisfied withthe quilt that I made using the patterns and designs provided in the book. This book is a helpful guide to quiltmaking, and the cultural informationit includes is a very interesting supplement to anyone interested in quilthistory or Christianity. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Starting a quilting business? read this book!
This book is an absolute necessity if you aregoing to become a professional quilter or even think you might want to be one.Thelen takes you through the process: from the very beginning questions you need to ask yourself, to providing you with charts and numerous 'worksheets' to figure your timing, planning and managing clients. She walks you though figuring out how much to charge, how much time you spend, how to market your services, what services to provide and even what office supplies you should probably have. She goes through the difference in stippling, custom quilting, and patterned meandering, charging by the hour or by the size. She goes through it all. This is not a pattern book though.Look elsewhere for patterns, look here for good solid information.Worth a purchase for the reader interested in starting a business.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Idiots!
Complete Idiot's Guide to Quilting / 1-59257-201-4

I feel like I'm a pretty good candidate for anything directed at idiots, but this book... is not that helpful. I have quite a few second-hand quilting books and this one covers the quilting basics less thoroughly than most of my "regular" quilting books.

This was my first quilting book and it almost convinced me to give up the hobby before I started. The explanations are very confusing and only really make sense to me now, in retrospect, after having quilted for some time. The book also heavily emphasizes hand-quilting over machine-quilting, which I think is a little myopic. How many "beginning" quilters in this day and age have the time to commit to hand quilting? I would guess not too many - I hold a 40+ hour a week job, and I barely have time to machine piece. Along the same lines, most of the blocks and pieces presented here are not machine-quilting friendly and the book spends no time talking about common machine piecing techniques.

If you do want to hand-quilt, you still may be disappointed in this book. The instructions on binding are horrible (but I've yet to find a really good binding resource) and the batting instructions aren't too much better. In fact, a good portion of the book is taken up with color charts and explanations of why blue pairs better with yellow than with green. Fine.

I'm keeping this book, for the time being, for two reasons. First, the color inserts in the middle of the book are lovely and inspirational - and the author correctly introduces the reader to the Trip Around the World quilting book, a vastly superior resource for machine quilters. Secondly, the section on measurements and how long a bed quilt must be in order to fit standard bed sizes is relatively useful. Pick it up if you can find it for a dollar somewhere - but don't let this put you off of quilting if you are a beginner.

~ Ana Mardoll

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Kindle subscribers
This book is formatted in two sections, one for instructions with pictures referred to by color (Kindle is only in black and white making these references useless) and a second section for reference. The Kindle format requires the reader to read all of the main section of the book before getting to the reference section. I would love this book in traditional format, but find it "non-user friendly" in Kindle format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful information for quilting
I thought the book was quite good.It was a great help with some of my questions but could have been more thorough on some of the sections. That being said I still think it was informative and would recommend for another beginner. ... Read more

I am so, so happy that I purchased this book. I learned about it from a quilting board forum and I went searching for it on ebay and amazon. I found a used copy that was in real good condition on Amazon for 80 cents + 3.75 shipping. When I received the book I do believe I got a brand new copy because some of the pages were still somewhat stuck together at the spiral binding and it smelled new. Anyway, this book is chuck full of excellent information about machine quilting. If anyone is thinking of doing machine quilting you will certainly benefit from this book. I love the spiral binding because it makes reading it so easy and when you need to follow some directions the book lays flat. You won't be disappointed with the way this book is put together and the valuable information that is inside.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
I read several quilting books before I found Basic Quilting: All the Skills and Tools You Need to Get Started and finally the pieces of the puzzle started to come together. Other beginner books just had super simple projects that you can make in a day but you weren't quilting (you were making crafts with basic sewing stitches which is fine if that is your intention).

I learned a lot from this bookbut it is definitely for beginners. You will not learn to make a quilt from this book. The most advanced project is a table runner but the projects are fun and with each project you learn a new quilting skill.

I gave this book 4 out of 5 Stars because it does not cover how to bind a quilt.

I purchased Quilting With Japanese Fabrics because I wanted to learn new techniques. I had attended a sashiko demo and decided this would be fun. Not only were the instructions understandable, the wall hanging went together easily. This is one of the best "how to" books I have purchased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting
I found this book to have very unique, interesting quilts, different from traditional. It provides ideas for making artistic, "one of a kind" quilts or wall hangings. The quilts use Japanese fabrics, but the patterns could be used with other fabrics as well. There are so many ideas, I am having a hard time deciding which to make first. I would highly recommend it for any quiltmaker or fabric artistic. ... Read more

Great book, I bought it for my 9yr. old Granddaughter.
I will be meeting with my Granddaughter this week end so we can start quilting together.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic book!!!
We gave my daughter a sewing machine for Christmas, along with a few how-to-sew books. This is probably my favorite. All of the projects are cute, and we have done a few already. One of the best things about this book is how basic it is.If you are an adult and want to learn the basics of quilting (which many adult books seem to assume that you already learned as a child), this would be a great resource.I'm looking forward to learning more about quilting with my daughter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner book for kids

5-0 out of 5 stars fresh inspiration for quick quilts
Quilting with precuts and shortcuts has lots of great ideas for quick quilts. It takes the quilter a bit beyond typical ideas for precut fabric squares, giving a lot more pizazz to the design. It would be fun to make one of each of her quilts; they are each so unique and cute. I like that it doesn't focus on just charm squares or fat quarters.Instead her ideas cover a range of precuts.Lots of things to try out from one book.In my opinion, fun for beginners and more experienced quilters.Martingale books are so easy to follow and come with loads of gorgeous photos.Adding this book to my collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars You have to check this book out!
Terry Martin's "Quilting with Precuts and Shortcuts" is an amazing collection of beautiful quilts that are designed to be easy! She explains in her introduction that although she wants to make quilts which are easy, she doesn't want quilts that look easy. In that she most definitely succeeds.

The quilts are divided into three basic construction types: strip-pieced, simple-shapes and applique. Martin provides specific direction for using pre-cut shapes, quick cutting methods and fusible web applique.

These quilts are beautiful, fun and sophisticated. "Chinese Lanterns" and "Quick Kimono" are dramatic quilts which utilize all of the asian inspired fabrics which are available. "Easy Peasy, One, Two, Threesy" would make a wonderful baby quilt, and quilts such as "Simply Charming" are just plain fun.

"Quilting with Precuts and Shortcuts" is a great addition to any quilt library!

2-0 out of 5 stars decent value for price
Nothing continuous offered here, although a few could be altered. I would say a good purchase for a quilter without much reference yet and looking for quilting designs.

4-0 out of 5 stars 60 Machine Quilting Patterns
The patterns are wonderful, they are just what a person is looking for to make a template from for quilting. They are just what I was looking for. When it come to quilting patterns for a quilt top it is hard not to find what your looking for, you will find that you will use this book over and over again.

Thanks so much for looking

4-0 out of 5 stars definitely worth the price
i can agree with some of the other reviewers that these are not necessarily the most stunning machine quilting patterns available (for stunning, try joyce mori's books, the newest of which includes continuous line designs).

however, there is a nice balance of traditional, contemporary, and cutesy patterns, and the bonus of directional arrows for some of the patterns so that the quilter doesn't have to waste time tracing the correct pathway. these patterns may not be useful for an heirloom quilt, but they will be a great convenience for baby and childrens' quilts which are expected to disintegrate eventually. some are shown in one or two combinations and directions to demonstrate how they could be changed.

any beginner who works her way through these designs will definitely be ready for any machine quilting she wants. more experienced quilters will be able to find useful patterns and ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginning book for machine quilting
I've been making quilts--or rather quilt tops--for years. This affordable book gave me the info I needed to plunge into machine quilting.I just did my first design tonight and am very pleased with the results. There are probably books with more patterns and nicer patterns out there, but if you are just beginning, this book will tell you what you need to know and give you some patterns to start with at an unbeatable price. You can then experiment with this little volume and invest in more expensive books when you have "gotten the hang of it" and know which types of patterns you want more of. My appetite has been whetted.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value
You may not use all of the designs; however, at this price, who cares. The patterns are easy to sew and are easy to transfer.Good combination of styles. This book has something for any beginner. ... Read more
