5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful tips for show quality quilts!
I met Karen McTavish in 2005 by taking 3 of her classes in Houston, TX.I was pleased to find her books as nice as her personality!I almost didn't buy this book because I wasn't planning to enter a quilt in any show other than our local guild's show but Karen has great ideas to make any quilt better and somehow following the "rules" makes me feel more professional in my hobby. In this book, Karen also interviews and compiles suggestions from other successful professional quilters so there is nothing missing nor stagnant about her presentation.I know now that I will buy any new books she puts out (as I have devoured her other three books also).

5-0 out of 5 stars must have
I have been quilting on my domestic sewing machine for 9 years now , I even teach, and the amount of informations in this book is fantastic. Little hints , the list of judges comments , and to know that all those wonderful quilters have started like us.
Quilting just for the pleasure or quilting for shows, it is a must have book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting for Show
Love this book and the DVD that is included. It's very informative, especially if you are just beginning to enter your work into quilt shows. It tells you what the judges are looking for in a winning quilt. I even took the binding off of a quilt and redid it after watching the DVD. Lots of pictures of beautiful quilts, lots of inspiration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Anyone with a Singer Machine
I grew up sewing on my mother's Singer.I have since given her machine to my children. They both love to quilt.I bought this book from Amazon so they'd have something to help them. They really love using it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting by Machine by Singer
I took a Quilting class and this book was a great reference book.It had everything a beginner quilter would need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
I've had this book before and it was a wonderful resource for a beginning quilter as I was at the time.I lent it to my sister and never got it back, and now want to start a new quilting project, so I purchased the book again. It was like getting back in touch with an old friend.
It has wonderful clear illustrations and instructions. It is visually beautiful, with the contemporary colors and patterns used for quilts.Makes me want to quilt every pattern.

This book is very good for beginners.

Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Primer
Unlike so many of the quilting books out there that get positively sappy, this revised Singer volume remains an excellent primer for the beginner trying to understand the concept and practice of basic quilting.I've seen no other publisher make the effort of so many full-color photos illustrating step-by-step how to design, construct and execute a quilt.Well worth the asking price. ... Welcome to the world of Cotton Theory quilting, where you'll find quilted embroidery, three-dimensional finished seams and a whole new way to quilt. Every quilt is reversible. This book includes step-by-step instructions and illustrations for 13 eye-catching projects, including placemats, table toppers, table runners, wall hangings, a tote bag, a bath mat, and various quilts. 1-0 out of 5 stars Will NOT do this technique again....
Even with a 'certified' instructor guiding the tablerunner class project, this was a difficult technique & not enjoyable.I have 2 'top of the line' sewing machines & had much difficulty trying to sew over the 'highway' & 'one way'.....just too bulky....I even gave up trying to get the stitch & tension adjusted on one machine.I feel I wasted money on this & the jacket book (which I will NOT attempt). Not fun projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting way to quilt
I have read this book twice and I think I am about ready to try to make something small to try out this new way of quilting. If it works the way it says then it will make quilting a quilt so much easier than it is now. Instructions are easy to read and I think to follow. After I make something using this method I will update this review.

4-0 out of 5 stars new process
I haven't really had time to try this method but it is presented clearly with lots of pictures. This is the only reason I did not rate it a 5

2-0 out of 5 stars trying out cotton theory
This is an interesting technique of quilting.I took a class which required having a book.It is a lot of work and many in the class were very confused during the cutting process; that is just it - there is a ton of cutting since all the batting is cut as well as the fabric. For a reversible piece, again this is interesting, but I'm not rushing out to do another any time soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars I would have given it five stars if.........
I was "dying" for this book and thought "wow this is going to be fantastic."
I think it'll take me ten years to learn this method! It's difficult to follow, even after taking a class! I feel like I need another class and hours and hours of sitting at the machine with the book and slowly working through it.
I love Betty Cotton's projects. Unfortunately it is not an easy way to quilt. I will conquer this method even if it takes me ten years (and it might).
I would have given it five stars if it was easy, but it's not! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pathways to Better Quilting: 5 Shapes for Machine Patterns
THIS IS THE BOOK that has given me the confidence I needed to finally do "designer" quilting on my domestic machine!Sally teaches how to use both stencils and Golden Threads paper to assure a positive outcome on your quilt.Needless to say, I think this book is absolutely awesome.Don't hesitate to purchase whether you are a beginning or experienced quilter; this one has techniques that everyone will enjoy as well as learn new skills that will enhance your 'tool kit'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best teacher for this subject I intend to purchase all her books on machine quilting.
This quilter/writer is the best on the subject of machine quilting. Her "Hooked on Feathers" is also outstanding. Inspirational! I have tried this techinique with great success, immediately. I am purchasing more products from her website. I am also schueduled to take a class this fall. I wish it were tommorrow. I feel very appreciative that I found her products. I will buy hers rather thatn to search for another author's because of her teaching skills and encouraging words. Alanna Levesque

2-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointmen

There are so many feathered patterns in this book and directions on how to take the basic designs and make your own feathered patterns.Really good instructions too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy
I got what I was looking for it was very detailed and helpful for the price and easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't have the book, but know this...
Study & you will quickly see that Feathers are THE MOST common quilting motif, next to the grid-line quilting. If you don't agree, then know that they are certainly up in the top 5!Feathers are so versatile and beautiful, formed in the image of bird plumage or if you will, in the shape of a teardrop - both of which are found throughout the entire history of quilting.
Feathers are used for filling space, in your blocks, setting triangles or sashings. You can quilt them in borders-long straight strips, make them undulate & twist, round or oval, place a half, quarter or heart shaped feather motif in your block, in a corner or just draw one on the label you sew onto the back of your quilt for a beautiful continuation of the effect.
No matter where or how you twist, turn, stretch or shrink your feather motifs, once you have perfected this teardrop shape, the possibilites are endless.Try it-you won't be disappointed!

While I hope to own this book someday(when the price comes down a bit)I want those who can just buy it without money concerns to know this. *From a quilter who studies quilting history non-stop, is the local guild librarian & webmaster.Owns a personal quilt related library of over 2,000 magazines & books. I like to pass on tips that will stay with you, not just be good for one or two times. Feathers are here to stay. They have endured the test of time, design and have held fast. You cannot go wrong with this-or any other well written instruction book on how to draw/design feather quilting motifs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Approach with Care
This handy volume is a near-must own for beginners and beginning intermediate quilter's.However, the instructions included must be approached with care.Unfortunately it is usually necessary to slightly adjust the instructions to complete the quilt properly (which may be difficult for real beginners). The half-square units quick-piecing method is a ridiculous waste of time and fabric. The quilt's included are great and I refer to my copy frequently for inspiration. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enough variety for every quilt
Volume Four is another excellent set of quilting patterns. They come in a plasticized box so it will stand up on your bookshelf. There is also a booklet which explains such things as how to resize a pattern, how to mark the quilt top, types of batting and several other hand tips for quilting the quilt.

The pattern itself tells the name of the pattern and the size.It also shows where to adjust the pattern for length, the direction in which to sew and where the repeat begins. The patterns include borders, triangles and blocks.

I would make copies of the pattern on "onion skin" paper (are you old enough to remember when we used this type of paper for carbon paper copies when we used typewriters??!!).Then I would stitch through the lines (either hand or machine) and tear it away when done. This way you can be sure the quilting is the correct length/width needed for the quilt and there is no messy chalk to use or the chance of it getting rubbed away before you are done quilting.

There are flowers, wilderness items, sailing items, scrollwork and ferns to name a few of the many offered. However you choose to apply your design, there are enough in this package to let you quilt most any type of quilt you have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Follow the Line Quilting
This is exactly what I was looking for !!!!I already have the first 3 volumes and use them all the time. They are great

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting designs for everyone
I have been eagerly anticipating the publication of a new quilting book and was very excited to see it finally available. I already own all of the other books in this series (Volumes 1, 2 and 3) and have been waiting for months for the publication of this volume.

Mary Covey's latest volume in her Follow-the-Line Quilting Designs series is technically not a book, but rather separate sheets packaged in a box. This "book" has just been published by Martingale and Company and it promises to be as wonderful as the previous 3 volumes.

You may ask why I like these designs so much. Well, there are several reasons. I like the fact that these are continuous line designs. I am a hurry up kind of gal and like to get things done quickly, before I lose interest, so... continuous line quilting designs are my favourite motifs to work with. I dont have to stop, re-position and start quilting again.

Now, sometimes you may want to do blocks separately. If this is the case, Mary has an answer for this too. For each continuous line design in the book, there is also a block design in various sizes. Thats great, but what is even better is that she also provides corner triangles to match, so youre covered no matter where you want to quilt. Oh, did I mention that her border designs include turning the corner, so you are able to keep right on going up the side of your quilt without having to turn and match motifs? Yes, Mary has thought of everything.

Sometimes I have trouble determining where to start and how to follow a continuous line motif. Again, Mary comes to my rescue. She includes a start point and has arrows and numbers for you to follow so you dont get confused stitching the patterns.

Another feature that I like in this series is that each design is on its own page. The pages open up and the border motif, with the turning corner and side repeat, are there. This is easier, and more accurate, to use than trying to trace a quilting design from a book.

Best of all is Mary's choice of designs. I find her motifs easy enough for a beginner, yet interesting enough, and with enough variety, to complement any project. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read and do...
A local group of quilters participated in a retreat where this book was used as the text.It offers a fantastic process to making contemporary quilts pain free. You don't need to know how to make a pattern or how to execute tedious machine (or hand) applique. This method is satisfying and easy to replicate because the book is thorough, concise and the photos are top notch. There many tips along the way which create many an "aha" moment.Open work, fabric manipulation and embellishments provide added inspration.Finishing techniques are fresh and can be used on any quilt. The binding on my book broke apart from usage but I took it to a local printer who was able to put a sprial binding on it which is perfect as it now lays flat for the next time I create a "Pignatelli style" quilt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting by Improvisation: Exploring Curves, Openwork and Dimension
In this book, Vicki gives absolutely the best insigt and instructions for creating your own "one of a kind" piece of artwork. Her suggestions and TECHNIQUES have made the entire "creating" process a cinch.Love the book and I highly recommend it to both beginning and advanced art quilters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting Improvisation
This is an awesome book. Viki's ideas are wonderful and easy to follow. I recommend either of her books.
However, be aware that the glue on the binding that the publishers put on the copy that received is a problem. My copy fell apart immediately. The info is great, but it is difficult to keep the pages together.

3-0 out of 5 stars Books and their bindings
The book is just what I wanted, but the binding of the book was very disappointing. I had opened it only 5 times and the pages started to fall out. The binding, or lack of it was so bad, I now have a folder of loose pages.
Maybe I was unlucky with this book, but if I had purchased it across the counter, I would have been able to take it back. I have purchased this from Australia, and it is a little difficult to return it to the States.
The book has been very well written with very clear instructions of a facinating technique to quilting.

I bought this book when I was just getting into quilting. It looked like it covered just about everything.I was right. The chapter on binding was worth the purchase price alone. It's well illustrated, easy to read, and loaded with ideas. If I was only allowed to have one book about quilting, this would be the one I kept.

5-0 out of 5 stars not just for beginners
I have been quilting for over 10 years and M'Liss Rae Hawley has been my favorite quilt designer/author for years. Her instructions are very well written and easy to follow. I had never seen this book before and even though I have made over 20 quilts I was still intrigued to purchase this book titled "Your FIrst Quilt". I read it cover to cover the day I received it in the mail. It has great suggestions and tips, even for the intermediated and more advanced quilter. I am very happy with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilting for Baby
I couldn't be happier with this book. I was really excited when I found out that not only was it hard bound, but it was also spiral bound. I am making a quilt out of the book now that I absolutely love. There are several other patterns in it that I also intend to make.

5-0 out of 5 stars non quilter joy
I am a non quilter; however, I am around outstanding quilters every week. I found this book to be wonderful. I was able to use the ideas and patterns on fleece blankets. The illustrations and instructions were easy to use and understand. I used the caterpillar (made out of fleece) to enhance a plain blanket. Outstanding tool even for non-quilters

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun
Having a stash of novelty and children's fabrics allowed me to play with the adorable and easy patterns in this creative quilting book.I especially appreciated that there were great patterns for both boys and girls. It made me want to make one of each quilt!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great patterns
The book has a lot of great quilt patterns. You might need to look beyond the fabric choices, I did. All of the quilts seem easy enough to do - great for a beginner. I haven't made any of the quilts yet but the instructions are well thought out and don't leave any questions, like some other books out there. I'm glad I purchased it!

From authors Ruth McHaney Danner and Cristine Bolley comes a collection of meditations that quilters, both veterans and novices, will enjoy. Each of the fifty-plus chapters includes a true story on a quilt-related theme, followed by "The Quilting Frame" (a spiritual application), "God's Template" (a relevant Scripture), "The Binding Stitch" (a brief prayer), and the "Scrap Bag" (a practical quilting tip). 5-0 out of 5 stars Every Quilter Should Own This book
This is a fantastic, fun book.I've given several to quilt friends as gifts. However, buying this book in either hard cover or paperpack from this dealer is a mistake. How they can justify charging these outragious prices I can't understand.I don't care if it's new or used.I've purchased the paperback ordered through Barnes & Nobel for under $10.00.I see this a lot with Amazone & I think it's robbery.Even if it's out of print, that doesn't justify charging double/triple the price. Thanks vor letting me vent :)

Product Description

A computer techie by trade, Dewey Pellicano would rather swallow needles than be pinned down to a life of quilting. But when her mother passes away, Dewey must exchange code for calico as the new proprietress of Quilter Paradiso.

Between learning the business and dealing with a conniving employee who is also her sister-in-law, Dewey is ready to snap. During a national quilt show, quilting celebrity Claire Armstrong offers to buy the shop. But before Dewey can accept, she finds the famous quilter lying dead on the floor—a bloody rotary cutter at her side.

When hunky homicide detective Buster Healy enters the scene, romance flourishes... until another murder takes place. Can Dewey thread together the pieces to this murderous pattern before the killer strikes again?

Wild Goose Chase is the first book in the Quilting Mystery series featuring amateur sleuth Dewey Pellicano.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great humor with an emotional core
A fun read that has a lot to commend it.There is humor, mystery, romance, betrayal, and beneath it all, an emotional core. The pacing was pitch perfect and there was a quirky self-deferential humor from the protagonist, Dewey Pellicano.Thayer had me hooked by page five when Dewey's annoying sister-in-law, Kym, pulled out a ruffled computer cozy to cover a laptop. She thought the computer clashed with the homespun calicos and gingham theme of their booth at a quilting convention.

A computer cozy?I laughed out loud at the thought and Dewey's horrified reaction.

Dewey is a likable protagonist who is struggling to find her way in a bad economy and having inherited her mother's quilt shop after her mother died in a car accident six months before.

Dewey doesn't sew, doesn't quilt, and would rather code software than thread a needle. As a non-quilter, I found it easy to identify with Dewey as a reluctant participant in the quilting world rather than if she were a committed quilter.

This fish out of water scenario is more than just a starting premise. The loss of her mother is a recurrent theme throughout the book. Dewey finally comes to terms with that loss and how she will choose to live her own life.Deciding whether or not to sell her family's business is set against a backdrop of murder at the largest annual gathering of quilters in Northern California and a budding romance with a man she still thinks of in terms of knowing him since adolescence.

The laughs were numerous in the book, but Thayer also snuck up and touched my heart as well by bringing forth tears.Well done.I picked up "Wild Goose Chase" as a casual read and found that I didn't want to put it down until I was finished.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quilters will love this quick-read mystery!
What a fun book! A little adventure while attending one of the major quilt shows!Character development is excellent and you can gain a better understanding of why we quilters treasure our quilts! My sister also enjoyed reading this book and she has no interest in quilting, but the writing drew her in and we both enjoyed the story line as well as the people and events involved!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mystery just right for a quilter
Enjoyable mystery.Clever murder mystery set at a quilt show.I enjoyed how the author described a quilt show just like she was there.Having been to several quilt shows myself I could relate to the scene(s).The writing is just right for the busy quilter. An interesting story and not all-consuming either. You can read and enjoy a chapter or two, then do something else, and come back to enjoy another chapter or two.Just like a quilter makes a quilt!Very good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Quilter with a Sense of Adventure
Last month when a friend asked me for a fun book to take on vacation, this is the title that first came to mind.Thayer takes us on a fun ride through the quilting world on the way to the murderer. The action is fast, dialogue snappy, and characters like friends.I enjoyed--and so did that friend who took it on vacation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Murder among the quilters
We welcome a new set of characters to the world of quilting mysteries, a combination of two of my favorite hobbies!Although the name of the quilting exposition and its location have been changed, a quilter will know that the real stage is the Pacific International Quilt Show.I have been to the International Quilt Show at the Santa Clara convention center, and could picture it as I read.I have passed the smokers outside and sat at the fountain, as well as fought my way through the throngs.Although I am not "blue-haired", I do have a wide behind!I so enjoyed the wry humor, brief but to-the-point descriptions, and the little bit of hot sex! This is definitely the start of a series that I will continue to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Designs
Golden Threads is a good source for designs and this is no exception. I always need inspiration for my quilting and this will be a great aid.

2-0 out of 5 stars Machine quilting.
Had some useful hints. Lots of patterns. Not actually that simple to follow - I kept looking for extra instructions. Would be a good companion book to face-to-face lessons, but a bit frustrating on its own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Show off your quilting
Quilting inside the Lines is my preferred book on machine quilting. Pam's techniques are easy to understand, easy to build on and look sophistacated whether they are or are not. Well worth the $$. The book shows designs for many different blocks and how to interpret the patterns for other blocks. After practicing these techniques I found my skills growing quickly and easily. I practiced on paper to understand the motions and the order of sewing. This helped immensely. Most of the patterns are designed for blocks, but can easily be interpreted for borders and sashings. If you can do a meander with the darning foot, you can use this book. Some of the techniques take a little practice to master. Pam's tips throughout are excellent. Well worth the $$. Way better than a three or four hour hands on class. Impress your friends in no time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flawless Hand Quilting
This book is very detailed and was exactly what I wanted. The Seller sent it in perfect condition!I've been enjoying the content since it arrived.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great details for improving your hand quilting.
Quilting has been increasing with popularity but hand quilting seems to have been tossed by the wayside.Too many new quilters forget about the quilting, leaving it to someone else to do on a machine. This book helps with the questions that a new quilter needs answered so she can begin to put the finishing touch on that heirloom quilt she just created. Believe me, your children and grandchildren will love the finished project more with your hand quilting on their keepsake quilt.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I was hoping for.
I thought that this book was about all aspects of hand quilting, including cutting and piecing. Although this book taught me how to pick a thimble, choose batting, and test markers, I have no idea how to create a quilt on which to use those things.

That aside, this book is very thorough in teaching stippling. But if you're wanting to find a book on piecing and patterns, keep looking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I highly recommend this book for all levels of hand quilters. Lots of great tips along with graphic examples. I have other books but this is the one that I turn to most often for information.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really liked this book
This book has some really great pictures and explainations to help with all aspects of getting a quilt top quilted and choosing the supplies to do it with.If you haven't actually seen someone do a quilt stitch, a book is not going to be able to show you how, but it's better than nothing.I have seen someone quilt, but not much.At least now I have a good quide and have been able to experiment with what I have read and seen in this book.I am glad I bought this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Better Quilting Pattern Books
Excellent patterns, whether or not you use the dot system.I use a home machine, not a longarm, and this book is suitable for what I do.The patterns are also prettier than some of the books that purport to show you how to quilt without marking.(Many of those books seem to want you to over-quilt, in my opinion.Too much quilting makes your quilt stiff as cardboard.)This book is just right, so far as the spacing and amount of quilting done.
