A stunning bilingual photobook. Nearly 300 pages of sharp photographs from the event (including a classic shot of an AK collective member grimly clutching a coffee!), together with 19 articles from the likes of Noam Chomsky, John Jordan, Naomi Klein, Hassan Yussuf, David Suzuki, Holly Dressel, Helene Vallieres and more. If that isn't enough, its a benefit for the legal fund for those arrested during the demonstrations. A brilliant recapturing of our history. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Very, very limited... and sometimes inaccurate
When I bought my first Fodor's Montreal & Quebec City some years ago for my first weekend trip to Montreal, I thought it was all right. It does contain useful maps with the obvious tourist destinations and hotels located for you. However, I have continued buying the new editions for my subsequent trips to Montreal and have discovered that they quickly outlive their usefulness. I find that the restaurant listings are VERY limited, considering the multitude of restaurants in the city of Montreal. Both the restaurant and hotel listings are not very lengthy and give you two options: pricey and "recommended," or budget and potentially scary. The listings for tourist attractions are generally good, with one major flaw: NONE OF THE LISTINGS FOR MONTREAL GIVE THE NEAREST METRO STOP!! If you have been to Montreal before, you'll know that almost every advertisement, sign, or newspaper article always gives you the nearest stop to their establishment on the city's all-important Metro system. If you haven't been there before, let me assure that not having this information is very, very frustrating.

As for accuracy: one of the attractions I went to (the Biosphere) is not open for the hours listed in this guide. It is open until 6 p.m. in the summer and 4 p.m. in the winter, neither of which is the time listed. It is not a short metro ride, either, which made me a very unhappy traveler. I have since spoken to 2 other people who tried to go to the Biosphere based on this information and found it closed. Also, there are no listings for either the Aquarium or the Planetarium, both of which I would have liked to see.

I feel like I have seen EVERY SINGLE THING POSSIBLE in Montreal (according to the Fodor's guide) in only a few short trips. This is hardly possible, given the richness, diversity, and beauty of this city. While my comments in this review are addressed mainly to Montreal, I have been to Quebec City only once (for the weekend) and feel like I saw almost everything they had listed. I would like to point out that this book is only an EXCERPT of Fodor's Canada 2001, and they didn't bother to give you any more information just because you were buying a book specifically on La Belle Province. I wish I knew a better guide to advise you to buy, but I am still looking for one. ... Read more

Excerpt: CHOI-FM is a French language FM radio station that broadcasts on the frequency 98.1 MHz out of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, with a modern rock format (before its takeover by RNC Media, it aired mainly active rock music). Locally, it is known as Radio X (a reference to "Generation X", as most of CHOI's listeners consider themselves). It was owned by Genex Communications since July 1996. The Bureau of Broadcast Measurement ratings released in December 2004 revealed that CHOI was the most popular radio station in the city with 443,100 listeners, up from 380,500 earlier in the year. The station is well-known for airing controversial ideas and opinions, and is very critical of the province's leftist political consensus, notably of the Parti Québécois. The station has become a target of various groups for some controversial political statements, notably feminists and gay activists, as well as prominent politicians. Following a ruling by the CRTC, the station's licence lapsed, with its renewal application denied, in 2004 for failing "to comply with the Radio Regulations 1986 (the Regulations) as well as CHOI-FM's Code of Ethics, adherence to which is required by one of its conditions of licence". Pending a court challenge, the station was permitted to stay on-air without a licence. On May 8, 2006, Genex announced it would sell the station to RNC Media. The transaction strictly speaking, the issuing of a new licence to RNC Media on the same frequency rather than a simple tra...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=860085 ... Read more

The station broadcasts at 106.3 FM from Mount Bélair . The station was first launched in 1934 as AM 950 CRCK , an affiliate of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission . It adopted the callsign CBV in 1938, when Radio-Canada's French radio network was launched. In 1941, CBV moved from 950 to 980 kHz . In 1974, CBVX-FM , broadcasting Radio-Canada's FM network , was launched. It was initially known as CBV-FM. On July 4, 1997, the CBC received CRTC approval to convert CBV from the AM band (operating at 980 kHz) to the FM band at 106.3 MHz. After the move to FM, the old AM 980 signal was discontinued. Excerpt: Sainte-Foy is a former city in central Quebec, Canada on the Saint Lawrence River. It was amalgamated into Quebec City on January 1, 2002. Most of Sainte-Foy is in the Borough of Sainte-FoySilleryCap-Rouge. Sainte-Foy is a major suburban neighbourhood west of downtown Quebec City. It is a great part of Quebec City's economic life by the presence of the Jean Lesage International Airport, Université Laval, many shopping malls and both bridges to the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River. According to the Canada 2006 Census: Commercial district In 1669, Father Chaumonot erected a chapel for the Hurons which was dedicated to Notre-Dame de Foy. Sainte-Foy's beginnings started here. The Battle of Sainte-Foy, sometimes called the Battle of Quebec, was fought on April 28, 1760 in this area during the Seven Years' War (called the French and Indian War in the United States). It was a victory for the French under the Chevalier de Lévis over the British army under General Murray. When compared to the Battle of the Plains of Abraham of the previous September, this battle proved to be a much bloodier affair in terms of the total number of casualties incurred by both sides - 833 French casualties to 1,124 British casualties. It was the last French victory of the Seven Years' War. Sainte-Foy's long-time and flamboyant mayor, the late Andrée Boucher, was defeated when she tried to run for mayor of the amalgamated Quebec City. She then became a radio h... Excerpt: CKMI-TV -The station was founded in 1957 on VHF channel 5 as the second privately owned station in Quebec, co-owned by Télévision de Québec along with the province's first private station, CFCM-TV. Its studios were located alongside CFCM's facilities in Sainte-Foy, then a suburb of Quebec City. Télévision de Québec was a consortium of cinema chain Famous Players and Quebec City's two privately-owned radio stations, CHRC and CKCV. It immediately became Quebec City's CBC Television affiliate, taking all English programming from CFCM. In 1964, following the opening of CBVT, CFCM disaffiliated from Radio-Canada (the French language arm of the CBC) and joined the loose association of independent stations that evolved into TVA, while CKMI remained with CBC. Télévision de Québec was nearly forced to sell its stations in 1969 due to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission's (CRTC) new rules requiring radio and television stations to be 80% Canadian-owned. The largest shareholder, Famous Players, was a subsidiary of Paramount Pictures. Eventually, Famous Players reduced its shares to 20% by 1971, allowing Télévision de Québec to keep CKMI and CFCM. The company renamed itself Télé-Capitale in 1974. MI-5 logo, used during the years of CBC affiliation.CKMI and CFCM were bought by Pathonic in 1979, and then by Télé-Metropole (which changed its name to TVA) in 1989. For many years, CKMI was known on-air as "MI-5." CKMI faced severe financial problems for much of its history as a CBC affiliate, in large part because the area's anglophone population was just barely large enough for the station to be viable as a privately-owned CBC af...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1271300 ...
