1-0 out of 5 stars Good for the listings, not for the "in-depth" coverage
I was quite disappointed by this Frommer's, I have used their series on numerous trips abroad and have found them quite informative. Being from Montreal, I found the initial section on Quebec history and culture very inaccurate and biased against the French-speaking majority. Now I question the accuracy of all the cultural information I read in the other books I bought. I give it 4 stars for the section on what "to do" and 1 star on the section aiming at educating readers on the culture and history of the place they are going to visit. The books recommended will probably give the reader an even more negative view of the French majority, none of which are written by the latter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for Montreal; superb for Quebec City
We've used Montreal and Quebec City (Eyewitness Top Ten Travel Guides) very successfully in Montreal, which is a much larger city than Quebec City and where the photographs and maps are very handy indeed. We read through the sections of the Dummies for Montreal and consider it a useful and interesting, but not an essential, guide for a visit there.

However, Dummies really shone during a recent trip to Quebec City. Our concierge at the Hilton praised the book, and it was a great ice breaker meeting folks in shops, museums and restaurants. The lack of maps and photographs are not a serious problem given the concentrated nature of the city, and the excellent maps, which are available free everywhere. The text and especially the top ten lists of sights and activities were really excellent.

Whatever guide book you use, we suggest you start out at the visitor's center near Château Frontenac, a wonderful Victorian pile in the heart of the city. [Meals or just drinks are very reasonable there, and the views of the river are extraordinary.] The visitor's center has tons of literature, including great maps, tour information, and over 500 brochures on attractions.

Next door lies the essential Musee du Fort. This is a homemade diorama that allows you to see the geography of Quebec City. The diorama is well done, albeit cryptic on some details, but with six major attacks covered in a half hour allowances must be made. It concentrates on the six military campaigns against the city (Wolff and Montcalm on the Plains of Abraham was the fourth, and the attack during the American Revolution was the sixth). Nonetheless, even people with little interest in warfare will learn a great deal about the city and how to get around.

There was an early blizzard when we visited and I spent a day reading some very interestingbooks obtained at the Musee du Fort, including a very nice inexpensive picture book (the ones on offer at the museums are cheaper and better than those on offer at news stands and book stores):

Canada Traveller's History by by Robert Bothwell.

A Short History of Quebec by John Alexander Dickinson.

The French in North America 1500-1783 W.J. Eccles.

The Illustrated History of Canada by Craig Brown.

La Nouvelle France: The Making of French Canada--A Cultural History by Peter N. Moog.

And for another rainy/snowy day, the massive Champlain's Dream by David Hackett Fischer.

(I had packed Why I Hate Canadians by Will Ferguson, a tongue in check "attack" especially on the culture shock of Americans dealing with French Canadians.)

In the event, we had a day and a half of reading and two and a half days of touring this endlessly fascinating city. Dummies added a real depth of richness to the visit.

2-0 out of 5 stars inaccurate title
I bought this book specifically in advance of a vacation planned on Canada VIA Rail on a well-known route from Montreal to the Gaspe peninsula. It is omitted from this book. Not even a mention. "Trans-Canada" this book is not.

My second beef is that there is a distinct political undertone (pro-French, anti-Anglo) in the Montreal guide section. If this were something that a traveller should be forewarned of that's fine. But talking about the 1970's unrest, kidnapping-murder by pro-Fracophile terrorists is unwarranted. Tell me about the city and the trains please. Suggest a French language phrase book.

Th only reason I gave it even 2 stars (because I cannot comment any other information included other than what I was searching in) is that it does give good suggestions for Montreal accommodations that are not run-of-the-mill. Was that worth the money? Probably not. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars You Can Still Fall In Love With Quebec
"We Fell In Love With Quebec" is the travel narrative written by a couple who traversed La Belle Province by boat in the late 1940s.Traveling up the Hudson and Lake Champlain they made their way to the St. Lawrence where the plied the waters along which sit the centers, big and small, of French Canada. As the reader floats along with them he partakes in the sights and sounds of Montreal, Trois Rivieres, Quebec and villages too numerous to mention. We read of scenery and people who inhabit this corner of our continent.

This book is certainly dated and a contemporary trip along the St. Lawrence would be different from the authors'.Still, the small villages remain and this book gives an insight into the Quebec that was and which, under the surface, still exists. You too can still fall in love with Quebec.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on Quebec City
I like this book.I usually use the DK Eyewitness guides for my European travels but the Top 10 book wasn't helpful. The Fodor's book is great as it gives more details about hotels, restaurants, bars, and shopping. It even includes a map.I recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
I did not find this book helpful. It should have been more clear and concise. Maps were too complicated for the lay person and information was difficult to find. It read as an actual novel, not guide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Average Travel Book
The book was helpful in finding where to go and what to do but we were a little disappointed in the restaurant section. When we followed the book we weren't very impressed with the restaurant. We were much happier when we would ask a local person where to go and they would usually point us to a restaurant that wasn't even listed in the book.I would still buy a similar guide for other cities but would ask around when I got there about the best places to eat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fodor's is great!
I've been using these travel guides for various places for years and have been very pleased.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Much on Quebec City
There's not much in this book about Quebec City (11 pages to be exact).I bought it for an upcoming trip to Quebec City.I was very disappointed and found it practically useless.I don't think "Quebec City" should be part of the title. If you want a book that's mostly about Montreal, this might suffice; but I wasn't overly impressed with that part either. There are a lot of photos of people that could have been taken almost anywhere.I have bought several Insight Guides that are much better than this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only good for before trip study, not good for actual trip
Okay, I bought this book with another one from DK (for Canada) to go to Quebec, Montreal, Toronto and Niagara Falls. I was attracted to the detailed description of the history, different districts in Montreal etc.

As it turns out, don't expect this book will help during the trip. It is only good for the background materials, the real hardcore touring part...it's a disaster for us.

We first arrived in Montreal, and found we had a hard time locating the actual tour site descriptions in the book. This book do it in a very "romantic" way, we had to read an entire paragraph to see the site we want pop up somewhere, and that's about all we can find. There's very little information about the actual site's hours, location etc. And it does not offer a detailed map for the main tourist site: Old Montreal. In the end, we had to use DK for the entire trip.

It's a pity that this is not a practical book. If somebody wants to know more about these cities, this will be a great book. However, for actual visit, I'd suggest just leave it at home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Travelers best friend to Montreal and Quebec
Gives needed insight along with great photographs from both Montreal and Quebec City. Extremely helpful for planning your stay with information from history of region, places to visit, helpful maps of area, attractions, where to stay or eat, plus much more. Even helpful in all aspects of planning your trip from telling you what tobring and wear, entry regulations, money matters, public holidays, ect. ... Read more
