1-0 out of 5 stars Map not usable.
The worst part of this kindle version (I view it though kindle application on my iphone) is that all the maps are simply not usable. Although you can zoom in, the resolution is simply not there, you can't even see the street names. This defeats all the purpose to have an electronic guide handy when travel. Glad that it only set me back $3.61.

The content of the book is OK but nothing stands out. But it is strange and a bit distasteful that the author likes to point out B&Bs that are owned and operated by gays, as if people should care one way or the other. But to the author's credit, he also listed certain areas in the cities that not everyone would feel comfortable strolling by, which you usually don't find in every tour book. I have been to Montreal and Vancouver multiple times, as safe and beautiful as the Canadian cities are in general, I had my goose pumps several time.

Get a printed version. Kindle version highly not recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful guide
Although it's a little dated now (some of the restaurants in Montreal are now closed), I really enjoyed this guidebook. It provided good insights, history and a selective list of sights and activities. The sidebars and the suggestions for day trips were especially good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I bought this handbook because the series had a terrific guide to Nova Scotia which I had obtained for an earlier trip there. That was not true of the Montreal and Quebec version. It was much less complete than the competition from Frommers in every way, from local history to places to stay and eat, and organized in a very confusing manner. Go with Frommers.

5-0 out of 5 stars great guide
I had previously used the Moon Guide for Rome and thought I'd try their guides for our long weekend to Montreal and Quebec city. This Moon Montreal and Quebec City guide was fabulous and helped me discover places we would never have seen on our short little visit.I also purchased the Moon Metro Guide as it is a convenient way to carry a map when you're out and about without having a giant map that shouts 'tourist'! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fodor's Doesn't Disappoint
This book was perfect for a weekend in Montreal.I looked through tons and Fodor's just keeps it simple with good maps, recommendation that aren't lacking in any way, and it is well organized. We took a couple of the restaurant recommendations and I had one of the best meal ver (literally) at Toque! and would strongly recommend the mystery meal.Out of this world. This book is a sure thing though if you are debating which guide to grab for an upcoming trip.Have fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have.
Handy little book for site seeing and dining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide
Fodor's guide has been very helpful on my trip to Montreal. We were very satisfied with our hotel, which we read about in Fodor. We planned our itinerary around the different areas recommended by Fodor and were able to enjoy and find them all. We also took a side trip to Oka, which was probably my favorite thing we did on this trip. Fodor's explanations of the different places, neighborhoods, and restaurants made our experience in Montreal and its vicinity meaningful and memorable. This is truly a guide of great value. ... Product Description
The goal was to shrink a conventional travel guide down to a super-compact size for three reasons:
1. It would work well on mobile devices.
2. It could be delivered to the customer for much less than the $8 to $12 travel guides.
3. It could be offered as a new kind of travel guide for people who don’t have time to read 80-100 pages.
This guide has been designed to be more of a quick reference tool for your smartphone rather than a conventional travel guide. It provides contact information for popular local attractions plus it includes a good list of restaurants, nightclubs and a bonus section covering breakfast.
Carry it with you and use it to plan your trip -or- during your trip.
Enjoy!

3-0 out of 5 stars info not always accurate
We found the basic info fine, but we had problems with maps missing info or even addresses being wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Just returned from MTL and QUEBEC. Excellent book, we used it the entire time.Very helpful maps, interesting thoughts on Politics. Just know that Cafe Esperanza is closer to the Lauriel rather than Rosemont Metro. Also, when you go, be sure to check out the Charlevoix region. Thanks Eilis, great job!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much to be very useful.
I think I've finally realized that I don't really like lonely planet guides. They try to be something for everyone and while there are some clues to what you're getting yourself into, a guide that includes both places for raves and early bird dinners, just has too much for me. It did provide one good tip for live music, but I probably could have gotten that easily some other way (online, asking locals, etc). I recommend Frommers 3-day guide and Eat.Shop.Montreal for a visit. It does have good maps, though, and it's very thorough. It also has a nice consice history of montreal and culture description that did enrich my visit, but again, you could get that from wikipeida if you took the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars August 2008 Trip
Went to Montreal for the first time in August 2008.This guide does a great job of letting you know about activities off the beaten path. For example, every Sunday in the summer there is a drum jam by the University in a park by the hill (it's called the tam tam jam). It's like Woodstock and totally made the trip for me.No other guide book discussed it, but this one did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Useful Guide Book
I find Lonely Planet guidebooks the most practically useful of all travel guidebooks. I find the Montreal/Quebec City to be definitely no exception. Just the maps in the book make it extremely worthwhile...no other maps are needed. Interviews with Montreal/Quebec City residents provide informative and real insider information about the cities, as do sections on history, culture and the arts. Information is adequately up-to-date.I highly recommend this book for anyone making a trip to one or both of the cities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart little travel guide of Montreal & Quebec
The PLUS: 5 Stars!
The guide takes a pyramidal approach to the sights of your destination. So you slowly can work yourself through the areas that really interest you by easily skipping things you would not want to see or visit at all.
It also makes it easy to find the things that are important to you because the descriptions are small enough and pictures further make it easy to attract your interest or pass things by.

The MINUS: 4 Stars!
The good about the Maps is that they are there at all and also that there is an index of some streets.
The contained foldout maps though helpful when there is nothing else at all are not my favorite because they are quite small and are more an overview to identify the area where something is to be found on a better more detailed map. The same maps as the foldouts are also on a separate map that is detachable. This is a good idea but they are way to small and hard to read especially in dim light and in an awkward format to be really useful. - When available, I rather get a local map from the tourist office and transfer my destinations to it.

SUMMARY: 5 Stars!
This guide is an extremely useful sightseeing guide and small enough to be carried with you all the time for quick reference. It also allows you to choose the amount of detail you want to follow for the town: top 10 Highlights - top 10 to each highlight - top ten to some general categories like museums, bars, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and also some specific categories just for this destination like historic sights in old Quebec or places of natural beauty.
Just watch out for one quirky approach of this specific TOP 10 guide: the top ten list contains sights for BOTH cities. Listing the top tens for each city individually would have been a better choice because they are too far apart to visit them together and mix their top 10s.
Insider tips or as they call the sections: "Street smart" round up this little guide. The maps are OK but could be improved. The deficiency of the maps though should not detract from the overall usefulness of this guide for your destination. This is true for a first time visitor with limited or all kinds of time and also for the return visitor, who wants to to repeat some destinations in more detail or avoid the same old top ten but venture out into new territory. ... Product Description
It is Winter Carnival time in beautiful Quebec City. The Screech Owls are in town to join in the winter fun and take part in the biggest hockey tournament on earth: the famous Quebec Peewee Invitational. This is where Guy Lafleur, Wayne Gretzky, and Mario Lemieux first showed the world their incredible talents – and now it’s the turn of Travis, Nish, Sarah, and their friends.

But the dream trip soon turns into a nightmare. Travis is asked to keep a diary that will be published in one of the big daily newspapers – and a terrible misunderstanding follows. Soon after Travis’s words appear in print, the crowds are booing the Screech Owls, and someone – no one knows who – begins a campaign of terror against the team.

The Owls know they are good enough to make it to the final. Sarah could even equal a tournament record set by the great Guy Lafleur! But if the Owls are to stand any chance at all, they must find out who is trying to destroy them.

The Quebec City Crisis is the seventh book in the Screech Owls Series. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quebec Rocks! I just don't get the hockey...
Quebec City Crisis was a book that I enjoyed, even though I do not like hockey. I rate it four stars because, being a non-hockey player, I do NOT get the hockey games they play. Roy MacGregor forges books that are both mystery and hockey.
I have read Mystery in Lake Placid, The Night they stole the Stanley Cup, Terror in Florida, Ghost Of the Stanley Cup, and Sudden Death in New York City. Same thing, all good books, yet all uncomprehensible hockey games. My favourite character was Bart Lundrigan, the mysterious newspaper person.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Again In This Series
The tounrament where some famous hockey stars like Mario Lemieux, Guy Lafleur and Wayne Gretzky first showed the world their talents. Now it is time for the Screech Owls to do the same. The dream trip turns into a nightmare. Travis is asked by a newspaper to keep a diary and someone sabotoged it. The fans start booing them and the Screech Owls must find a way to find the culprit. Will they find him in time?

5-0 out of 5 stars I think......
I think this book is excellent, i have read all the screech owl books in order up to this one, except i read Nightmare in Nagano before this cuz that wuz the only one my friends had that i had cuz we had to do a report. I haven't finished the book yet but i will be finished the book at the end of the month. I love Roys books and i absolutly adore the way he describes the hockey games that the Owls play (i play hockey in real life). I love the way roy has hockey and mystery genre into one book and how all of his mysterys actually make sense after all the hockey games and investigations. I love the mysterys and i plan to read the rest of the owls books (even if i can't keep up with the pace they are being made). Thanks roy for the many great books! Keep reading and never stop writing all those books that i adore soo much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quebec City Crisis
A great book! It's suspenseful and fun to read about when the Screech Owls, a 12 year old traveling hockey team, travels to Quebec City for a hockey tournament. They didn't know it, but there would be trouble ahead. This mystery is a great book for both fans and players. I play hockey and find this series to be very addicting. You won't be able to put this book down. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fairly comprehensive guide
I bought this mostly for Lake Champlain, but it seems to be a fairly comprehensive guide to boaters along the Hudson River, through Lake Champlain and on up to the St. Lawrence River. It offers information on the local marina's and sightseeing.I wish the maps had been a little more comprehensive, but in general I think I will find alot of use for the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
We purchased this book in anticipation of a Lake Champlain cruise this summer (2005).Excellent description of anchorages, which is exactly what we were looking for. Many photos, too bad they are all B&W.
The only thing I would like to see is a new edition, the current one is 4 years old, and as such, I would expect some of the marina information to be out of date. ... Read more
