5-0 out of 5 stars very satisfied with purchase
Purchased the book Frommers for a vacation in Quebec City and found it very useful.
It helped us to find the places we wanted to visit, the places to stay and the best areas to dine.
Would recommend this to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Always useful
Frommer books are always dependable for travelers. They are always well-written, easy to read and use, and informative. The montreal book is no different. Lots of beautiful photos, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another good entry from Frommers
Over the last 10 years of vacations, I've always searched for Frommer's guides before heading out.The 2010 Montreal and Quebec City guide follows the familiar format with well written and accurate descriptions of accomodations, restaurants, attractions, and sample itineraries.
The pull out street map remains invaluable.Recommended, again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely book---get it for C$30 at Amazon.ca
If you're looking for an armchair travel book, this isn't it. Instead it's a (non-technical) book very particularly about light, photography, and Quebec City. Sort of a love letter to the city, from a photographer. If you're visiting QC and want to take great photos, this could help.

Can't fathom why these sellers are charging upwards of $100, when Amazon in Canada is selling for C$30. Outrageous! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Two enchanting cities worth exploring
I have been to Quebec City once and I have visited Montreal four separate times. To put it briefly, these are two enchanting cities, well worth visiting.

The "Lonely Planet" travel guide, "Montreal & Quebec City City Guide" represents a very useful resource for those who consider visiting these two cities.

Montreal: Among the hotels that I stayed at are The Queen Elizabeth and Hotel Gouverneur (my naughty son packed one of the coffee cups into our luggage without my knowing it; it is now one of my favorite mugs!). The Queen Elizabeth was absolutely delightful. There is also a brief description of the Underground City. It is not as special as some might say, but it is an enjoyable place to visit and shop. There are nice summaries of places to see, places to eat (I enjoyed the ambience of The Beaver Club in the Queen Elizabeth Hotel), places to stay. . . Visiting the Olympic Park was most enjoyable.

Quebec City? The Old City is delightful. Our family took one of the water tours and one of the bus tours of the city. Well worth experiencing! The Plains of Abraham were chilling (I can't believe that such an important battle took place in such a restricted place!).

All in all, the two places reviewed here are delightful venues for a vacation. And this book does a nice job of providing the would-be visitor with relevant information. . . .

1-0 out of 5 stars Quebec City
I never received this book, nor did I receive a response when I emailed you to tell you so. Please either resend or credit my account.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly descriptive guide
Lots of great walking tours, and a lot of different options for restaurants, lodging, and stuff to do.The maps were quite helpful when I went to Quebec City for the first time.In many ways, this book is better than similar guides as it is written by local authors and published by a Canadian company, so there is inside knowledge of the area.Absolutely wonderful restaurants that do not appear in other publications are listed here. But this is not a perfect guide. The language section consists primarily of standard French phrases rather than ones more likely to be heard in Quebec, and it is a bit smaller than what most travellers would find useful. This is a concern because the Quebec dialect of French is comprehensible to French speakers, but it can be significantly different from that spoken in France or taught in schools. An addition of local phrases would be of great use.Why the language section is so light is uncertain.

Overall, though, I recommend this and other publications from this publisher for the traveller going to Canada. If I get to Montreal or other areas in French speaking Canada, I will be sure to get the equivalent versions of this publication for my trip.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Basics, but not much more
This guide book included interesting walking tours and descriptions of historic buildings and monuments of Quebec. However, it was not good at giving directions to locate restaurants.Although it did have a mini glossary of French terms, this did not include regional dishes found in restaurants, which was a problem for me in the few restaurants where no English menu was available. Also, the introductory text about the history and society of Quebec was not well-written.Too bad Let's Go! doesn't make a Quebec City guide! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars The worst guide ever!
It's such a bad guide that sometimes it's not clear whether the monument is in Montreal or Quebec City, as long as it's in the "TOP 10" of both of them!
Doesn't even have the addresses of the monuments in order to put on GPS and get there. Briefly: don't waste your money here...

3-0 out of 5 stars A somewhat helpful guide
I was a bit disappointed that the pictures and print were so small. It was an adequate guide to travel the city.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Book!
Bought this for our trip to Montreal this April. LOVED the book and the guides. We used it for visiting the Olympic Village, Insect habitat and St. Joseph's Oratory. Easy to read directions and great highlights. My 16 year old son also enjoyed it. The map could have been a bit bigger (or had larger type) but other than that, fab. We dined at 3 restaurants they recommended and all were wonderful. Good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Generally good, but with some missing info...
I really like these "Top 10" pocket guidebooks. They provide a lot of information and, best of all, fit nicely into my back pocket.[A trait that few other "pocket" guidebooks ever seem to achieve.]

However, this particular Top 10 guidebook -- Montreal and Quebec City -- only gets four stars because of various odd omissions.

There's no map of the Montreal Metro. Why not?

Although the book covers both Montreal and Quebec City, it neglects to provide information on how to get from one to the other. Is there a train? If so, how often does it run?How much does it cost? How long does it take? Are there busses? How long to drive from one city to the other by car?All this should have been described in detail.

Also, the book is needlessly vague at times. The author says that a taxi from the Montreal airport to downtown should be avoided because they're "too expensive."But what exactly is "too expensive"?$50?$100? More?

Currently, there is a fixed price of $35 Canadian dollars for a taxi from Trudeau airport to downtown Montreal. That's not exactly cheap. But, if you've ever taken a black cab from Gatwick to downtown London, you know it isn't truly expensive either.

The author should just list current prices and let the reader decide what is "too expensive."

Otherwise, though, the book is quite helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, uptodate and easy to use
I like the small size of this guide you can bring everywhere easily. It is really usefull to have it to choose and see everything important and to find your favorite interests, restaurants or hotels in this place efficiently by looking at the differents sections it proposes. The maps are well done...really, I have also this one for NY city and it worths its price. Enjoy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very Helpful
I was somewhat disappointed as only about one thrird of this little book is Information about trains. The other part is a general travelguide.
Only VIA Rail services and the Rocky Mountainer are covered. Trains like the Polar Bear Express aren't even mentioned.
Then I had to find that some information is out of date (VIA-Rail DOES serve Quebec City).
If you want a Canada travel guide rather buy a Lonely Planet and if you want additional information about rail travel you can find it on the internet.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. Only one third of it is actual information about train-travel. Most of it is a general travelguide with informations about the cities etc.
The train information covers only VIA-Rail services, doesn't even mention trains like the Polar Bear Express.
Then I found that some of the information about trains was even out of date (Quebec City IS served by VIA Rail).
If you want a Canada travel guide with detailed information about the country rather buy the Lonely Planet. If you want more info on trains in Canada I'd suggest looking on for websites.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE Canadian rail book!!
This is THE ultimate canadian rail travel book.I would even recommend this book for those driving through Canada. The author gives advise (very detailed) on where to eat, sleep, sight-see, and so on.I urge everyone to find this book at your local bookstore and thumb through it.Then buy it here.At the end of the book it even guides you along the train journey by listing the significant sights along the way (such as....at Mile marker 26 towards the south, you'll see the cemetary containing 145 victims of the Titanic).Best of all, it displays all of the VIA Rail timetables and how many calendar days each leg of the trip takes. This is especially useful for those on the CANRAIL pass package.YOu can literaly plan your entire itinerary from this single book. The size allows you to easily stow it in a small camera bag or purse. The PERFECT Canadian travel book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is even better than I thought
Ok, I'm back. This is my second review of the book, however this time it's based on my real experience traveling with VIAfrom coast to coast (Halifax - Vancouver) and using this book on the road (oooppss...rail). While preparing my itinerary I used this book as a main source ofinformation when deciding how much time I'll spend in each city and whereI'll be staying. VIA web site is of course the place to pickup the latesttimetables, calculate the price of the tickets, and make a reservations...(I found timetables at the end of the book still useful on the board of thetrain when I needed to quickly find out the distance to the next station).

I put three books in my backpack, two travel guides from NELLES (guidesto Atlantic and Pacific provinces) and this one. The guides from NELLES aregood with lots of facts about the country and with nice photos, however Ifound "Trans-Canada Rail Guide" far more suitable for peopletraveling across Canada by train. Also the book is as valuable on board ofthe train as well in the downtown of the city. I rent the book to severalfellow travelers in coach class and each one of them told me how great itis.

The organization of the book is simple but efficient, for example inPART 4 City Guides and plans you can find for all mayor cities shortdescriptions of the following: History, Arriving in...(by air, by train),Local Transport, Orientation and Services, Where to stay, Where to eat,What to see, Moving on (by air, by train). If you are real rail enthusiastyou'll have fun reading PART 5 Route Guide and Maps with description ofsmall stations and places marked with mile markers so you can be"smarter" then others guessing what it is or where you are. Someprices mentioned in the book are the same even todaybut in general arehigher. My average expense for the mid-range hotel or B&B was 55 CADper night (including tax), entrance fees for museums and other events arein general higher, anything from 10 to 50% higher, food 10-20%, buses andtaxis 10-20% , train tickets 10-20% (the cost of my Canrail Pass was 408CAD including tax). If you need any additional tips or information aboutthe trip you can send me a message to my account on Yahoo (see memberpage). Today I found out that second edition of this book is published socheck it out!

4-0 out of 5 stars Read this book before you go!
This book helped me prepare itinerary for my one-month journey from Halifax to Vancouver that I'm planning to take in May 2000. I checked prices and some telephone numbers mentioned in the book with those I found on different web sites and despite the fact that the book is four years oldit's still useful and accurate. There is everything you need to prepare forsuch journey: routes and costs, facts about country, practical advices(transport, festivals, food, time, hotels,...), history about Trans-Canadarailway, mayor city guides and plans and least but not last route guide andmaps with short description about small towns along the routes. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars getting the inside scoop
Just got back from Old Quebec; we were so glad to have this guide! We could take tours at our own pace, and make discoveries as we went along. How charming to turn and see the cannonball at the base of the tree!We would have missed this if not for the step-by-step nature of this little guidebook that led us through the city and provided historical tidbits.Old Quebec is all about the back roads and the nooks and crannies. This book was the next best thing to having our own private tour guide, it really fleshed out our visit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its exaclty what the name says, a collection of walking tours
This is not organized like your typical guide book.I was looking more for a typical guide book, but I will not knock a book for doing exactly what its title says. You will not find an overall map of Old Quebec. Not any sort of alphabetical list of restaurants or places to see.Actually very little coverage of restaurants. For this book to be of any use, you should pick one of their walking tours and follow it, using the book as your guide. The book provides interesting information about the stops along the tour. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent hints
We just returned from our trip to the Quebec province and the guide was very useful and informative, not only on the sites, but also on restaurants, activities and others. The only thing it should contain and did not is information on the area's national parks and other nature areas of interest, which info we found locally from tourist info centers.

Overall very good and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Reference for Travelers
We planned a trip and traveled to Montreal and Quebec. While we often rely on our GPSr to give us landmarks, places of interest, and dining spots, we found this guide was indispensable for giving more detail than we could get from the GPSr, and enabled us to make good choices for our eating and sightseeing. We also chose a splendid Hotel in Vieux Quebec that was both a bargain and a delight worth many times the price of a night.

The price of the book will be returned many times over in the quality of experiences you have while visiting Montreal and Quebec!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, overall guide, but lacking on dining options
This is a great guide for those who haven't yet been to Quebec City.It gives general information on the top sites, hotels and dining in the area.I would have liked to see, however, more dining options and a larger section on traveling to Quebec City with kids. Also, there is a whole vacation rental business in the city, mostly apartments, that is a great way to travel and less expensive than hotels. The guide never even mentions this option. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars montreal and quebec city colourguide
Very informative, I am from this area and loved the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overview
I thought this book was quite appropriate for my travel to Montreal and Quebec City. It describes in sections of what to see and do at Montreal and Quebec City. It also gives the reader information on some of the excursions one can undertake while in these areas. However, this book is best used in conjunction with a detailed map as it doesn't not tell the read how to get to the places it describes (e.x. while Montmorency and Orleans are indeed 5 minutes East of Quebec City, it doesn't tell you how to get there). Overall, if you are only staying in each city for 1-2 days though, this is a great book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't have good maps
This book is colorful which is good. However, I am surprised by the fact that it doesn't provide good maps. It has brief regional maps and some area maps. However, I couldn't find most routes and attractions in the maps. Those routes are mentioned in its introduction of area attractions. The other surprising fact is that it doesn't have a subway map.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information poorly organized, leave it at home when you travel
This travel guide is organized as follows:
1/ The first few pages are simple maps but they won't be of much help if you actually try to use them to navigate Montreal/Quebec.
2/ 100+ pages of text with full-color pictures detailing what to see or do in Montreal/Quebec, a section is dedicated to each city and sub-sections for areas of interest in each city, like the old port area in Montreal.
3/ the book calls it the "Listings" section, it has travel tips, lists of hotels, restaurants, places to shop, etc. (b&w, no pictures, each page divided into 2 columns, looks kind of like phone book listings)

This tour guide does an excellent job of including almost every spot that a tourist might be interested in, accompanied by colorful photos, the problem is a reader often have to scan through whole paragraphs of text to find specific information he/she is looking for. For example, when scanning through the guide a photo of a restaurant caught my eye and I would like to find information about that restaurant, often I would have to scan through the whole paragraph to find the line describing the restaurant, and when I need the address/contact information I'll have to flip to the listing section. Another problem is without a map a street address is not very useful.

If you allow yourself plenty of time to prepare for the trip you might as well get this book, read through it to determine what places you want to visit/restaurants you want to dine in; and then do the preparation work to find out the opening hours/contact information/address etc. But if you just want to hop on to a plane to Montreal/Quebec and roam around, this tour guide is not for you. ... Product Description

The largest French speaking territory in the world, Quebec is also Canada’s biggest province.Populated by the Algonquin, Iroquoian, and Inuit tribes 10,000 years before the arrival of the first Europeans, the first French explorer to enter the area now known as Quebec was Jacques Cartier. He claimed the land for King Francis I of France in 1534 during his first expedition into the Saint Lawrence River. Quebec City was established in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, who is often referred to as the “Father of New France”. Life in the newly formed city was difficult and many settlers died from hunger or disease during the first cruel winter, but the arrival of more immigrants and the agricultural success that followed meant the city and its population quickly began to grow.

Product Description
This volume is the result of collaboration between SPMA and the Association des archeologues du Quebec (AAQ); its guest editor is William Moss, Chief Archaeologist for the City of Quebec. The publication has arisen from the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the city's founding by Samuel de Champlain in 1608, an occasion which gave momentum to a number of important archaeological projects in the city and surrounding region, and provided an excellent opportunity to present their results. It contains sixteen papers, all translated from French, the language of Quebec City. They include accounts of exciting discoveries relating to the port, the great chateau on the crag above it, the defences, and the newly discovered remains of the short-lived colony of the 1540s. The papers underline Quebec's status as one of the leading centres of urban research in North America. The volume provides the only modern overview of archaeological work in the city in the English language. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great city book
picked this little book up for my 3.5d trip to montreal, and it was just perfect - both in size and detail.it's organized by neighborhoods- what to do, eat, play, drink in those areas.it's a concept that works well since that's how i tend to explore cities anyways, and this pocket sized book fits perfectly in my coat pocket.

it's not helpful for hotels, but i prefer to do that sort of research on tripadvisor beforehand anyways.i also would not recommend it for exploring quebec city - which is barely a page or two afterthought stuffed in.

for those visiting montreal, the two things the book didnt have a chance to update:
1) 747 express bus from the airport - run by the city, it's CA$7 per trip, but you can pick up 1 and 3-day passes which cover both the airport bus and all metro/buses in the city.it's a service that just started mar2010.
2) bixi - montreal has this awesome bike sharing program where you can retrieve and deposit a bike at outdoor stations throughout the city.the city's also planned plenty of bike lanes to keep you safe.

enjoy!
