5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Programming With Visual Basic
This and Code Complete are my favorite programming books, and I have read a bunch. This book is hilarious, his stories are out there. Covers a good number of real world difficulties that other books don't cover. I wish this guy would write more, he is a genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dated for VB but timeless advice in general
Mark Warhol has given us a book full of very sound advice for writing real, maintainable applications. The programming tips are applicable to any language; I work mostly in Tcl/TK and Perl where Mark's advice holdsjust as well as in VB.It's a darn shame this one is now out of print.Anote to Wiley & Sons: bring it back!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best programming book I have ever read
While dated in specific VB examples (it was written for VB3), this book is far more important in what it teaches you about the programming industry in general. It teaches how to write clean, structured code, and what to expectas a professional programmer. Anyone who writes code for a living shouldbuy this book immediately, regardless of whether you're just out of school,or have been in the industry for years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every programmer - promotes responsible code
I really enjoyed this book which is more than I can say about most of the programming books I read. The author is humorous while his is delivering his message about responsible programming. He reminds us of the need to be consistent and sensible about the way we code - in the real world, other people eventually have to deal with our code and it can sometimes be very painful. In fact, we can save ourselves the pain of going back to work on code we wrote months ago only to find we can't understand it now.Follow the techniques in this book and save yourselve and others a lot of grief.

The copy of this book that I have is for VB 3 and I don't know if it has been updated, but it really doesn't matter, because the main points apply to all versions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best book on how to program ever written.
By following Mark's advice you can avoid months, even years of the blood, sweat, and tears he's already been through creating- and the more importantly- maintaining code. How much would you pay for that? This rich book is well worth the meager price ... Read more

Product Description
This book was originally published in China in 1995. This is the first English edition. This book is a complete text book on QBASIC programming. It assumes that the reader knows very little and builds up to quite an advanced level. It contains some obsolete material, such as MS-DOS. This was intentional, as it is intended to match the original Chinese edition.QBASIC still continues to be used. Nowadays if people want QBASIC to run on their computer, they need to download QB64. The latest version of this was released on 21st August 2009. QBASIC, or QB64 as it is now called, is a very good choice for a first programming language, as you can achieve a lot with very little effort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New to Programming?
I have read the third edition of this book.
If you are new to programming, then this is a good book for you.
This book starts off with the introduction to computers such as the definition of personal computer, how one communicates with the computer, how computers perform complicated tasks, etc. Then the user interface of QBASIC is shown, explaining the use of the Menu Bar, Title Bar, View Window, etc. Some basic DOS commands are also presented and the biographical history of computing is also discussed.

A chapter is then devoted to Problem Solving. In this chapter, the use of flowcharts (a very useful programming tool) is introduced.

The rest of the chapters discuss topics like

-Numbers - addition, subtraction, division, etc.
-Scientific notation - how some large and very small numbers are presented.
-Variables
-Print and LPrint
-Strings - Concatenation of strings, ASCII Tables, LEFT$, RIGHT$, MID$, UCASE$, LEN, INSTR,
-Data Input - READ and DATA Statements together with RESTORE, INPUT
-REM - The use of the REMark Statement
-PRINT Statement - Screen Placement and Formatting, PRINT USING, Output to the Printer,

-Subprograms - How variables and expressions are passed, passing values from subprograms to the main body,
-Functions - INT, CHR$, LEN, MID$, INSTR

-Decisions -=, <>, >, <, <= and >=, IF-THEN-ELSE, ELSE IF, SELECT CASE,

Repetition - This chapter discusses Do Loops, how one can process data in a list format with Do Loops, Nested Loops, Flags i.e. a variable to keep track of whether certain event has occurred, FOR...Next Loops and finally a case study on developing a menu-driven program to analyse loan is presented.

Arrays are then discussed in the next chapter. Some applications of arrays such as the Bubble sort and the Shell Sort are discussed in this chapter.Sequential search and Binary search are also discussed.Two-Dimensional Arrays are also presented.

Chapter 8 deals with Sequential files. The WRITE command is introduced.Sorting and merging of sequential files are also presented.

Chapter 9 deals with Random Access Files

Chapter 10 deals with graphical display of data.Commands such as SCREEN, LINE, and WINDOW are presented. The constructions of line charts, bar charts and pie charts are also discussed.

The final chapter introduces Visual Basic. This book comes with a Disk.Contained in the disk is the source code for all the examples in the text (so you don't have to type them). Also, a setup file for a "Not-Full"-Version of Visual Basic is contained in the disk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lets one appreciate ease of programming today
I am a fairly expierenced programmer, but I decided to take a look at this book anyway.

Nearly 5 years ago, Vol 1 introduced me to VB. Everyone told me that QBasic (A language known as Structured) was dead, and to learn Visual Basic (Known as Object Oriented Programming) instead. I tried andtried, but I could not grasp Visual Basic. I came accross this book, whichintroduced QBasic to me. It did it clearly, which is an acomplishment isitself. Best of all, it let me learn VB and QBasic, which I still use tothis day.

On to this volume. Since QB hasn't changed since '91, the QBsection has grown in detail. Many advanced elements are introduced, likemachine language and controlling memmory. Also, the so called "DOSAPI" is demystifided.

The VB code is not quite as great. Much of thetime consuming QB code like PRINT and INPUT is now gone in VB, replaced by2 mouse actions. The bulk of this section is re-explaining QB information, which becomes redudant. The Windows API is briefly introduced, but notexpanded upon. If you need detailed, advanced VB information, lookelsewhere. The bridge is made and is effective, but certain necessaryskills are not made in the VB section.

The book comes with VB on CD, butbe warned. It is a fully functional copy of VB, minus the ability to makeEXEs. The reason Microsoft made this available was to further there newActive-X controls Internet market. Besides that, VB5CCE (what is includedon this disk) can be downloaded as a 9.5MB file from[Microsoft]. having it on a CD is a nice conviencethough.

Despite redundancy and some oversimplification, this is aextremely valuable learning resource.

1-0 out of 5 stars QBASIC book - my overveiw.
I think that this book is too tough to follow up with. I really understood the language better by taking a course than reading the book. The book is really confusing and rambles on about nothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding the connection between Q&VBasic.
The beginning student rarely understands the development of programming very well, and thus it's confusing trying to understand the connection between QBasic -- little used anymore -- and VBasic, which looks quitedifferent, at least initially. This book dissolves the confusion.

QBasic remains important, because it is an excellent tool for learningthe fundamentals of programming. But obviously VBasic is the more usefulstate-of-the-art tool. Thus, connecting the two is a very effective way tolearn the "basics" and the subsequent development of programmingtechniques.

The book is clear and concise, uses nice examples andexercises, and is well-organized and thought out.I would recommend itvery highly as an introductory programming text.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
This is one of the best textbook for Visual Basic 6 programming, for MIS students or professionals. It is easy to follow and designed for self-starters.The reference materials in the Appendix A-C are very handy and useful.I have used this book for my introduction to Visual Basic, at a few colleges.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning!
This book does NOT teach object based event driven programming of VB6.This book teaches code based 1960's structured programming in a VB5 environment.Unfortunately the authors do not know VB6 code. This book is a VB6 desert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Using this book as a textbook for a 2 quarter course
I have been in the teaching profession for over 30 years!Currently, I teach COP 2172 Visual Basic, and COP 3170 Advanced Visual Basic: a two quarter course sequence at Florida Metropolitan University and have used this as a textbook. The presentation style of the authors of this book is excellent. They use the theory introduced in each chapter in a large number of worked out examples and programming projects in each chapter. Then each chapter ends with a good selection of programming exercises as well as programming projects. The book also provides a CD-ROM containing all the worked out examples and projects of the book and the publisher usually supplies another CD-ROM to instructors that also contains the solutions to the exercises and projects appearing at the end of each chapter.I found all this material to be excellent instructional tools. If you wish to view the qualifications of this reviewer to judge the validity of his review, feel free to visit:....

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction To Computer Programming with Visual Basic 6
As the title suggests, this is a book that stresses (really) programming and programming logic for beginning programmers.Though the book was written as a classroom textbook, I have really developed a clearerunderstanding of Visual Basic programming through self-study following theexamples and exercises (hey authors, how about providing answers to thecoding exercises at the end of each chapter for non-students like me?).Itwas painstakingly written and explained, stressing programming exampleswith each topic introduced. In addition, at the end of each chapter, codeand screen shots are provided for a composite programming example coveringthe topics of the chapter.I cannot stress enough that this book isexcellently written and a great choice for the beginning programmer inunderstanding the core of Visual Basic programming.Good work, and thanks! ... Product Description
Profesisonal Visual Interdev 6 Programming begins by introducing Visual InterDev as a development environment aimed at the professional web developer. It shows how existing knowledge of HTML, ASP and scripting can be combined with Visual InterDev features to enable developers to create complex applications, integrate databases and maintain a consistent structure and appearance for a site. Professional Visual Interdev 6 also describes how Visual InterDev can be used to support teams working on large projects and contains extensive coverage of how to use the script debugging features. The book then moves out to cover important aspects of how to effectively use Visual InterDev in rapid web application development by describing how to create design-time controls (ActiveX controls used at design time to build script that is executed at run time), COM components and Windows Script components.

A demonstration of how Visual InterDev can be used within an n-tier development environment is achieved by presenting two case studies based on commercial situations. Finally the book introduces the exciting new technology areas of XML and XSL, something that all serious web developers will soon find themselves needing to know. Amazon.com Review
If you'd said a couple of years ago that someone would developa WYSIWYG design environment for the Web, people would have thoughtyou were crazy. But lo and behold, Microsoft's Visual InterDev arriveson the scene with its Windows-style interface and advanced scriptingfeatures, and stuns HTML coders the world over.

Success, of course, comes at a price. This is by no means an easy language to master, andthat's where Professional Visual InterDev 6 Programming comesin. It starts with the easy stuff, opening with a comprehensive tourof the interface before exploring areas such as debugging andintegrating databases with Web sites. Complex functions for the realpower users such as Design Time Controls are explained well with anassortment of nicely chosen and comprehensive examples.

It'sparticularly worthwhile to look at chapter 12's case study of how tobuild and operate a Web search engine using COM components. Theguidelines given can be easily scaled up to provide multiple-fieldsearching of thousands of records with very little slowdown--perfectfor sites with large volumes of data and Web traffic.

Professional Visual InterDev 6 Programming is a welcomeaddition and should prove invaluable to wannabe--though notbeginner--developers. --Steve Russell, amazon.com.uk ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time & Money
Like the other reviews, the book skips around too much. Hard to follow. Even some of the example source code would not compile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unstructured, Confusing, Very, Very Confusing
While I appreciated the fact that Ian didn't start out with VI 101, as I read through the subsequent chapters I am discovering that I am getting more and more confused.

It's like a number of readers said in their reviews. There is not continuity in the book. You read a chapter on SOM. Then you get a helping of Client Side Development. But no follow through. I always find that the easiest way to learn a new topic is to follow a project all the way through.

This book is a hopeless hodge-podge of material. It should be called "Ramblings on Visual Interdev", or "Ruminations on Visual Interdev".

This is not a book that will teach you anything. It will leave you very, very confused wondering why you ever bothered clicking on the VI Icon.

1-0 out of 5 stars A poor Wrox book
This book is a disappointment. I am a reasonably proficient ASP programmer that so far have used TextPad, and have written forms, DB-connection strings etc by hand. I enjoyed the "ASP Pro 2.0", "BeginningASP databases" and "Techniques for webmasters" and thoughtthat all books from Wrox were good. So I bought this book to learn thebenefits of InterDev (I considered the "beginners" InterDev book, but it looked too easy), since no manual comes with the InterDevsoftware.

The book is supposed to be for "the professional webdeveloper that wants to learn about the benefits of InterDev", but Iam not sure. The level of difficulty varies a lot - the book contains acrash course in the InterDev IDE that left me looking like a big questionmark, and chapters that have walkthroughs (with screen shots) of how youmake a DSN connection on NT. The books biggest problem is that the chaptersdo not seem connected - a little bit of this and a little bit of that.Perhaps you are lucky to find a chapter or two you'll like (and I did finda couple), but overall the book is poor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a beginner
Ian covers most aspects of InterDev, along with COM, XML, and a few other related issues. It's a helpful read if you're new to InterDev, but if you've been using it awhile you won't come away with much informationyou'll be using in your work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent, but not great
This book covered most of the material that I was hoping for, but most of the topics were explained at a high level, instead of really getting down to the nitty gritty.I was especially disappointed with it's coverage ofVisual SourceSafe. But, this book is still better than most of the othersI have browsed through for VI6. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Too many typos and other mistakes - no help from publisher
If you are trying to learn from this book - don't! I am sure that there are others that are better.

I'm using this book as a text for Visual Basic 6 class. The further you get into the book, the more mistakes (especially in the code for the exercises!). One Exercise (Chapter 11) was so riddled with mistakes that it was a guessing game.
I don't expect everything to be spelled out.
I do expect the example code to be complete, consistent and correct. Fortunately, I have a great teacher.

Also, most good books/publisher have a website where you can download errata/corrections to the mistakes and typos in the book. Prentical Hall has purchased the book. If there is a correction page, I couldn't find it. I usually can find such pages since I have worked in the publishing business.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse book ever!
This book is not for beginners. Worse ever for beginner not enough to support all the examples. Don't buy this book is your a beginner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great VB book
I have read many different programing books and most are just too wordy.I find this one to be to the point and direct. Great for all levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Beginners
This book is for someone who already knows another programming language e.g Java, if you don't look for a beginners book. Its Ok for Quick results but remember the first four chapters are missing on the CD, but overall itsa good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's good for a programmer who wants to know VB
Although I don't think this book is for the total beginner, it's a good start for the person who already knows another programming language. I have written Java, JavaScript, and LISP for a couple of years and wanted to get into VB. I started on this book a month ago and have gotten good results. This book is used at my college as a text book and the students hate it.But they hate all their programming textbooks! It's not fair to listen to astudent, who has to learn a language from a demanding class, judge histextbook. ... Read more
