5-0 out of 5 stars Be Your Own Literary Agent by Martin P. Levin
If I ever dare to become my own literary agent, Mr. Levin's advice is the advice I will follow. He is very thorough and the book is most helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good guide toward getting your writing in front of an editor
This book is good for what it is.What it isn't, is how to be your own agent.Chapters on contracts and agreements say get a lawyer or agent.Though it does give examples of contract provisions, it leaves the readerthinking that he really does need an agent or attorney. This book isn'tabout never having an agent, its about getting the offer BEFORE you get anagent. It might even let you negotiate your first book deal if its asimple one.

However, the book IS a good guide on how to get yourmanuscript to an editor, and get him to read it.With tips not only onwhat your presentation should look like (query letters, sample chapters, etc.) but also how to find the right editor and make sure he or she readsyour manuscript.

The book contains annecdotes from famous authors, samplequery letters, cover letters, as well as tips on improving your chances toget plucked from the slush pile.It also does give you familiarity withcontract terms and a good idea of what a "standard" offer mightbe, so that you and your agent will be speaking the same language.

Thisis a good book for anyone who wants to send their manuscript directly tothe editor rather than trying to first find an agent. If you think you'llhave more luck this way, this is a good book for you. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A bit quirky
It starts out promising, but Mr. Edelstein soon lost me when he suggests that we trespass upon someone else's property, find an empty room and crawl around in it.The point is not lost (regarding his discussion on observation), but the "assignment" is a bit strange.I would prefer to do things that will not get me arrested or committed. The advice throughout, however, will probably be effective or helpful for some, but not for me personally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Beginning Writers!
This is a perfect start for anybody who has any interest whatsoever in writing no matter how devoted they are to it.The book takes you step by step towards whatever goal(s) you set for yourself in an easy to understand format that you can customize to your own individual style.A must read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for the beginner.
This is another great guide for the beginning writer. From getting started to editing and polishing your writing, the author covers pertinent topics most helpful for those wanting to know how to take their writing to thenext level.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good book for those who desire to learn HOW to write
I felt the on-line description of this book was quite misleading, however I do not blame the author. The title clearly states that its purpose includes HOW to become a writer. However, from the description, as well asthe other on-line review, I personally believed its main intent wasactually getting your work published.Unfortunately, too much of it dealtwith the mechanics of writing...in great detail. For those of us whoalready have material "ready to go," there was simply not enoughinformation. In several matters, including query letters, Edelstein merelyrefers the reader to other books. Thus, if you want to learn HOW to write(from step one) this is the book for you.If you're struggling to getpublished (that would be me) another book might be more appropriate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book, and go from wanna-be to published.
Scott Edelstein takes away the mystery and gives the necessary tools to get published.I went from a couple of years of knocking my head against the proverbial brick wall to being published hundreds of times, all because of this book. It's as simple as reading it and doing it.Within a few months of applying my newfound knowledge I had my own weekly newspaper column. He gets specific, none of the generalities most other "how-to" write books use, and it makes the difference.I'm proof. ... Including everything from plotting to characterization to approaching agents and editors, the book gives you a head start toward publishing your own novels.Amazon.com Review
Romances account for more than half of all mass-marketpaperback fiction sold. Two thousand romances are published eachyear. Ah, a land of opportunity, the writer is prone to think. Not sofast, Swifty. If you aren't already a reader of romances, chances areyou'll never write a convincing one yourself. But if you genuinelylove happy endings, Julie Beard (My Fair Lord) is hereto help you become the next, well, Julie Beard. Embedded withinchapters about writing and publishing and promoting your romance areall kinds of juicy tidbits about the romance biz. Beard discusses eachromance subgenre in detail, disclosing typical story lines, theappropriate tone to use, and authors whose work is worth checkingout. She talks about current trends (the biggest one at publication isthe "cowboy-rancher-baby-bride" romance) and how to spot future ones(hint: keep your eye on popular culture). She knows what to include inyour book--irresistible heroes and heroines, for starters--and what toavoid: nontraditional locales, rape scenes, sadomasochism, infidelity. She defines such terms as black moment, regency, andclinch ("the passionate embrace that typifies the traditional romancecover"). And yes, Beard says, even men can get their romancespublished--though it may be the one field in which they can succeedonly if they are willing to take on a pseudonym of the femininevariety.--Jane Steinberg ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You won't be an Idiot if you use this guide!
This guide is one of the best that I have purchased. It's simple, cuts to the heart of the matter and is very user friendly! I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for answers to improving their writing, getting published and great advice on keeping your focus.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of its kind
I have pretty much every book on romance writing I can get my hand on, and while there's certainly a lot of overlap among them, this is definetly the best.

While all of the books have helpful information on the romance industry, this one really stands above the rest. It's wonderfuly organized - it's the one I turn to first when I need to find something quickly. It's also well written - the information doesn't differ a whole lot from the other books, but this is by far the most fun to read.I've also found that the suggestions are truly helpful. The hints/suggestions sound really basic, but have made the writing process MUCH easier (I'm a beginner).

Most of the books in this genre have something new to offer, but if you're only going to buy one, this is definetly your best option.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!Get This Book!!!
If you are truly serious about becoming a successful romance writer then you MUST have this book.I've read TONS of books on writing, not only romance but fiction and non-fiction as well.None of them were as user friendly and focused on how-to info as this book. Most other books quickly brush over the how-to.This book actually shows you step by step what to do from choosing the type of romance to write, structuring your book, synopsizing each major part in 4 paragraphs to getting published!!This puts other writing books to shame and it makes me feel like I've wasted so many years with the others when I could have had this gem the entire time.

If you want to write romance and you want to get started on the right foot then you MUST HAVE THIS BOOK.No exceptions. And if you are trying to decide between this book and another (or several others), get this one!The others can't hold a match to this one.Not by a long shot.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real jewel
This was the first book that I had ever read by Julie Beard. After reading her thoughts and ideas,I'm sure that it won't be the last. The book was intresting and to the point. Her ideas were well organized and thought out.A two year old could understand and utilize the information. At points there was humor and it felt as though you were talking to an old friend.Julie Beard has a new fan in me.Even if I find that I'm not intrested in her romance novels, when I am asked who is my favorite author,my answer will undoubtably be Julie Beard. The help and confidence that she offered me in this book were well worth the price.I'm not sure that I'll ever be an author, but if I fail it won't be due to anything that was lacking in her book.If I were given the opportunity I would send her a personal thank you.My out look and my life were changed in a couple of hours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for aspiring writers
Excellent advice on how to write, what to write, and where to send it once you've finished it. A realistic look at the romance industry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My New Favorite Reference Book!
There needs to be a lot of love for this book. As a self-published author, with aspirations of having future books published, and looking to break into various other areas of the writing industry, this book will become a tome that I hang onto and reference regularly as I continue my writing career.

The reason I grabbed this book by the wonderful folks at Writer's Market was because it was current. Published in 2010, it gives an updated look at the state of the publishing industry as well as current technology and where these things may be headed in the future. Whether you're trying to publish your novel, sell some articles to magazines, sell a screenplay, or have recently made the jump to full time freelance copy writing and need some advice on how to start your business (and ensure you aren't audited by the IRS), the Guide to Getting Published has you covered. It's a one-stop shop that you can reference throughout a career and at the time of this writing, is completely relevant.

The authors of this book don't try to use big industry slang terms and talk over your head (they do, however, provide a glossary of industry terms in case someone tries to!) and keep their ideas concise. Even the areas that I have no experience in, I gained a better understanding of after reading their designated sections.

This really opened my eyes to the publishing world, and was no-nonsense in regards to how difficult a career it can be, but it was full of encouragement and reassurance as to how rewarding it can be with a little bit of passion, persistence, determination, and talent.

The main information I was looking for from this volume was how to submit a book proposal, and the subsequent manuscripts, but I feel ready to write a killer query letter, and have a better understanding of what editors and literary agents are looking for. The web links in this book are worth the cover price alone. There are a million websites out there with information on publishing, however, these book gives you lists upon lists of the best sites so you can operate efficiently and don't have to waste time sifting through the internet muck.

The Writer's Market Guide to Getting Published comes highly recommended for any writer serious about a career and willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. No one is going to do it for you, but this book will help cheerlead you on your journey.

You can bet that when I do end up selling my next book, Writer's Market will be receiving a huge thank you in the Acknowledgments section!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get from idea to publication
I had the pleasure of editing this book. This thoroughly researched and up-to-date book gives you the steps you need to organize your writing life, find markets for your work, and promote yourself as a writer. It's straightforward and approachable and will equip you for writing success. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, compelling, informative
I was given this book as a gift and was surprised at how much I learned from the author's story of her own writing career, as well as tips for taking my writing to a new level. I found the book to be very valuable -both for craft and encouragement - as if the author was writing directly to me. Great resource for new writers as well as a review for seasoned ones.

5-0 out of 5 stars Maralys Wills is a talented authority on the subject of writing and publishing
DAMN THE REJECTIONS is a blend of constructive how-to, motivational anecdote, and enlightening memoir.Wills's voice alone across all of these areas is an example of good craft, in addition to all the insightful writing advice inside the book.I especially like the chapter entitled "Small Goofs," and the twelve tiny rules that Wills derives from editing thousands of manuscripts. No writer can afford to ignore these tips--they're easy to recognize, easy to apply, and, ignored, will most certainly keep your good work from getting noticed. This book has been an impactful and useful writing guide for me and has inspired me to seek out the other eleven books Wills has written.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superlative Memoir and Writer's Guide to Getting Published
I stayed up most of the night reading Maralys Wills' outstanding book, Damn the Rejections, Full Speed Ahead, and was sorry when it ended. Both a page turner and beautifully written, her compelling style and skilled craftsmanship lend impressive weight to her practical advice on developing superior and marketable writing skills. The structure of the book is unique in that Wills interweaves a fascinating memoir that combines affecting scenes from her personal and writing life with teaching important skills of the craft, such as: writing potent sentences, a good beginning, a plot that moves and develops, creating dramatic scenes and live characters, re-writing.Particularly delightful are the chapters on writing love scenes, humor, and for the male market.Along with all of this invaluable information, she shares the trials and tribulations of her personal experiences marketing 12 books in several genres. When she imparts her wisdom of many years on how to sell what you write, you would be a fool not to listen. The many published authors from her writing classes testify to the effectiveness of her teaching.Every page of this book sparkles with wit, humor, gems of wisdom, and sentences that made me green with envy.Wills' indefatigable spirit shines throughout and is an inspiration to all of us who want to live by the pen (now the computer) and must one day step onto the bumpy road to getting published.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining & full of useful gems
Like a great novel, I didn't want this book to end. As entertaining as it is instructive, I found myself reading "Damn the Rejections, Full Speed Ahead: The Bumpy Road to Getting Published," over breakfast, squeezed in before dinner, and late at night. It didn't want to put it down.

She drew me into her story and soon I found myself wondering what was going to happen next, only later jotting down notes to remember for my own writing.

With a dozen books published, she authentically provides the advice writers need. Fiction writers will discover tangible, work-ready ideas. Non-fiction writers will find constructive guidance throughout, including plot ideas. Reading this non-fiction book filled with interesting anecdotes and a mildly suspenseful cadence provides a real life example of how to entertain and inform at the same time.

Her book doesn't gloss over the difficulties (137 submissions before one of her books was sold!), but describes the persistence and focus all writers require, as well as specific techniques that will polish a manuscript until it gleams.

Perhaps it reads like fiction because Maralys Wills has authored numerous fiction books. Though I bought her book to help with my non-fiction writing, she had me wondering if my next book could be fiction! She provides specific, useful advice on critical areas such as plot, character, finding ideas, research, and selling a manuscript or book idea. She provides advice with depth.

One of her books was especially close to her heart, and she used its "bumpy road to getting published" as a core example throughout this book. At times I wanted to reach out to her and listen as she poured out her sadness or her excitement. She had me living this roller coaster life with her.

Perhaps because she drew me into her tale, I felt present with her, as if I were one of her students in class. I absorbed her advice like a sponge and instantly found the mistakes in my own writing, as if she were critiquing my work in person. Beyond the classroom, I find myself still living with the characters in my head, wondering what they are going to do next.

A good novel does that - leaves you wanting more. In this case, the main character is the author herself, and there is only one way to keep this book alive: to apply Maralys Wills' advice from "Damn the Rejections, Full Speed Ahead."

4-0 out of 5 stars Full speed ahead
Now that I'm reading your book I know that something clicked when I heard you speak. I have been playing around with writing a memoir for a few years and have felt discouraged and frustrated. I know truth when I hear it, and your approach to writing reveals who you are in a way I can totally relate to. You are there on every page, bright and inspiring and real. I love this.

And it has freed me to tell my story without compromise. So what you did was to give me permission to go "full speed ahead" with my book with more confidence than I had before I met you. This is a gift.

It also provides an unflinching look at the perils of pursuing publication and deconstructs a published romantic suspense book, “You Only Love Twice,” by Lori Wilde (focusing on theme, synopsis, turning points, scene and sequel, etc).

Finally, the book defines terms and answers frequently asked questions, provides tips and worksheets to make the writing process easier, and focuses on the details of the authors’ writing journeys and what they learned over several years.

Both practical and inspiring, the book encourages writers to pursue their passion without attempting to diminish the challenges they will face. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice resource of basic information
This was the first book I ever purchased online ... a number of years ago:-)

The book gives all the basic information required to start writing articles for magazines and also putting together a book proposal for a nonfiction book. My only criticism is that more information could have been included on the actual writing process.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is "organise" in the UK
I haven't read this book or anything else by Janet McaDonald and don't wish to comment on the book itself (I gave it three stars only because I had to enter something in the field). However, in fairness to the author it should be noted that she spelled "organize" correctly for her part of the world. British spellings often differ slightly from their American counterparts.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is ludicrous at its best!
If I could give this book 0 I would, but I do not have that option. For trying to teach others, she can't even get her own spellings and chapters in order! She says in chap 1 (the introduction) that you can find more oncertain processes on articles in chap 4 (it is not 4 it is 5) and on booksin chap. 5 (it is not, it is in chap. 6) For someone who is telling us tocheck our spelling she spells the word 'organize' as 'organise'! Forexample pages: 23, 24 & 32. She often says in this book to check and recheck our grammer before submitting it to a prospective publisher. She goeson to say that by doing this we might be looked down upon as a new authortrying to break into the business. How the hell did she get this non sensebook of hers published to begin with? I will be re turning this book toAmazon hoping for a refund. I have owned this book for 6 hours and if itwere winter I would use it at best to start a fire! DO NOT buy this book!It is a waste of print and paper! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outwitting Yourself
Nothing beats the joy of consuming something that tastes good and is good for you. In this case, it's great advice delivered in the same engaging voice that made "Outwitting Squirrels" such fun.

While I don'tthink there is one perfect book for aspiring writers to read (because youlearn best when you read several books on a subject), I did find two thingsparticularly nice about Bill Adler's take on book publishing: Hisamalgamation of perspectives as a writer, agent, publisher, packager; and,the format of the book, where extensive samples are woven into the chaptersinstead of held for an appendix. Why "Outwitting Yourself" forthis review name?Because, it seems that we potential writers can find 101reasons (a.k.a. excuses) for not getting on with our writing careers. But,with Adler's advice you will have the road map needed to find your way to apublished book... Outwitting your excuses, thereby outwitting yourself.HaveFun and Best Wishes on your journey to publishing success. With BillAdler's book of course!

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled with insider knowledge!
Bill Adler Jr has been in the publishing business for twenty years, and is willing to let neophyte authors in on the secrets he knows about getting published. Great stuff in this book, a real inside look at how to becomesuccessfully published (and then how to get publicity for your book, too!).

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and enlightening book with practical advice
What I really like about this book is that it provides practical, real-world advice. The section of the book with remarks by actual editors is especially helpful. This is the single best book on how to get published that I've ever read.Bill Adler also has a fluid, entertainingwriting style that's a pleasure to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really great book on how to get published!
Finally, a book that tells you what agents, editors and publishers are looking for. This book doesn't talk down to you, or assume you need writing classes. It's just useful, hands-on information.(And fun toread, too.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
