5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of The Best!!!
I absolutely hate McGraw Hill! But this book is a surprise. I think that the AP series are the only good series in McGraw Hill Publishing. It analyzes the chaoter section by section and gives quizzes to ensure proper understanding. This is a steal for the price! I actually thought Princeton Review/Kaplan would be a good bet but I am for sure that this is the best one by far. ... Read more

Product Description
Drawing comparisons to the most eloquent science writing of our day, three eminent psychiatrists tackle the difficult task of reconciling what artists and thinkers have known for thousands of years about the human heart with what has only recently been learned about the primitive functions of the human brain. The result is an original, lucid, at times moving account of the complexities of love and its essential role in human well-being.

A General Theory of Love draws on the latest scientific research to demonstrate that our nervous systems are not self-contained: from earliest childhood, our brains actually link with those of the people close to us, in a silent rhythm that alters the very structure of our brains, establishes life-long emotional patterns, and makes us, in large part, who we are. Explaining how relationships function, how parents shape their child’s developing self, how psychotherapy really works, and how our society dangerously flouts essential emotional laws, this is a work of rare passion and eloquence that will forever change the way you think about human intimacy.

From the Trade Paperback edition.Amazon.com Review
Poor, poor science--it gets blamed for everything. While it might be true that some of our alienation and unhappiness stem from a too-rationalmisunderstanding of emotion, it's also true that science is its own remedy. A General Theory of Love, by San Francisco psychiatrists ThomasLewis, Fari Amini, and Richard Lannon, is a powerfully humanistic look atthe natural history of our deepest feelings, and why a simple hug is oftenmore important than a portfolio full of stock options. Their grasp ofneural science is topnotch, but the book is more about humans as socialanimals and how we relate to others--for once, the brain plays secondfiddle to the heart.

Though some of their social analysis is less than fully thought out--surelye-mail isn't a truly unique form of communication, as they suggest--thework as a whole is strong and merits attention.Science, it turns out, does have much to say about our messy feelings and relationships.Whilemuch of it could be filed under "common sense," it's nice to know thatcommon sense is replicable.Hard-science types will probably beexasperated with the constant shifts between data and appeals to emotionaltruths, but the rest of us will see in A General Theory of Love anew synthesis of research and poetry. --Rob Lightner ... Well this book was recommended by my therapist, and did not disappoint. Though I think my girlfriend got more out of it than me. But overall the book was good, came on time in the condition promoted, and I would recommend it to others who want a clinical comparison of love to the standard psych angle..

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Read this book to understand why love and attachment don't just feel good, they're actually vital to health and survival. You'll never think of love the same way again after you read this book. This book is hard to put down and combines a poetic appreciation of the mysteries of love with a solidly researched understanding of why our bodies and brains behave as they do. The most absorbing chapter in this book is about "limbic regulation", the mutual process by which two bodies regulate each other's physiological processes. "Stability means finding people who regulate you well and staying near them," the authors write.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind and heart opening
I usually love books that serve as an mind opener. While reading them, I discover anidea that changes the way I perceive world around me. This book is one of those books, after which my world don't look same any more. And if that wasn't enough - it opened my heart also! After reading it and contemplating through its massages, I realized why we die without love. Not justartistically said, but literally. No love = no life!

4-0 out of 5 stars A General Theory of...just what I needed
This book first caught my eye because of the picture on the cover. As cliché as it might sound, I judged the book by the front cover because of two, barn red chairs, leaning together in an empty room. After reading the book through, the cover gave an accurate description of the detail within. The book sought to bridge the gap between emotion and biology by presenting the `basic theory' of attraction through the means of psychobiology and human attraction. The book's authors sought to compare things such as human emotion and behavior to biological and environmental influence by stating that when we are young, our "nervous systems are not self contained: from earliest childhood our brains actually link to those of the people close to us that makes up the life force of the body." The book prompts readers to continue in intuitive ways of the heart and not to let media and social norms distract from our innate ability to feel emotion within the very anatomy of our nervous system's key contributors; such as the heart and brain. The book suggests that certain parts of our body's major communication system, the limbic system, have distinct abilities aside from keeping us functioning physically. "Human beings are immersed in a sea of social interchange, surrounded by a subtle communications network that most do not notice. The limbic brain is our internal cryptographic device, allowing us to decipher a flood of complex messages in an instant. But when decoding breaks down, the resulting deficits can show us what emotionality enables the rest of us to do."

This book is recommended to those who are studying fields relating to the human body and psychology or to readers seeking to advance in well rounded theories of love within the disciplines of biology, economics or physics. This book is not effective as a self-help tool and it does not help in offering relationship guidance. Rather, it is a building block for those hoping to enter into meaningful relationships with family or romantic interests after discovering their own capacities to love. Most of the vocabulary in the book is explained, but there are times in which you might need a background in a few of the subjects introduced.

4-0 out of 5 stars Confoundedly Informative
This is a good resource for laymen and experts alike.

It's clinical, but far more lyrical than a textbook or journal article. The writing style felt elegant in this balance.

It's well sourced and the sections that examine (positive) limbic resonance articulate the profound rewards (and corresponding risks) of falling in love.

However, some people feel this book is too clinical.

Others are averse to being either structurally analytical or critical of family systems.

Anecdotal experience has found such opinions to correspond with sympathetic fans of "Eat, Pray, Love" (F) and "Wall Street/Scarface" (M).

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book, good condition
I received the book only after 2 business days from purchasing it. It was in good condition and I can use it this semester and easily sell it again. I would buy from this company again.

4-0 out of 5 stars great
Although the product took a little longer than i had hoped to get to my house, it was in great condition and couldn't get much better.

3-0 out of 5 stars Take a pill
Why don't textbook publishers understand that students have a lot of things to carry? This book weighs a ton and there is no need for it.It has extremely wide margins (on some pages, half the page is blank!) and lots of unnecessary photos.Perhaps the book's size is an attempt to justify its hefty price.

As an introductory textbook to the science of Psychology, the book has its strong points and its weak ones.It does a fairly good job of giving a general overview and the five major perspectives (neuroscientific, psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, and humanistic), but I think that there are two major problems with the book. The first is that it is very American-centered.The European roots of Psychology are given short shrift, and even largely pooh-poohed.Freud is regarded as just one of many pioneers and his work is extremely oversimplified and, I would say, misrepresented. The author seems obsessed with the anal stage of development, to the point of neglecting virtually everything else Freud taught. The second problem with the book for me is that the author appears to be a strong proponent of the neuroscientific approach and devotes far too much attention to it, when compared with the other approaches.A large portion of the book is devoted to extremely detailed lessons in anatomy and physiology. The other perspectives are not covered in nearly the same detail.I also felt that there should have been a discussion of the potential abuses of the behavioral approach and the downside of the chemical approach to dealing with disorders.(Do we really want our society dependent upon drugs in order to cope with daily life?)

But the book is commendable on some levels. It is far less propagandistic than most textbooks these days. However, the author appears to bend over backwards to emphasize the importance of women in the field of psychology. He would not have had to do so if he had given more space to the European pioneers.I found it odd that he seems to regard the relatively obscure Leta Stetter Hollingsworth as worthy of almost as much attention as Sigmund Freud. Those sections dealing with sleep and with scientific method were quite well done though.

On the whole, I'd rate the book as worthy of three stars. It's not really bad, but it could be a lot better.I hope that there are better introductory textbooks available. If I were an instructor I'd shop around some more before using this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a textbook...
I ordered this textbook b/c it was about 1/3 less on Amazon than in the university bookstore. Unfortunately, I did not realize that it was bundled with another text at the U bookstore and had to order that, too, so I probably paid about the same amount in the end. That said, it's a great intro to Abnormal Psych and a text I'll most likely keep (vs. selling it back at the end of the semester).

Product Description
"The Science of Psychology: An Appreciative View" by Laura King (University of Missouri at Columbia) is the first text to bring a truly appreciative view of psychology - as a science and for exploring behavior - to introductory students. It is built around the idea that students must study the discipline of psychology as a whole, that the sub-disciplines are intricately connected, and that human behavior is best understood by exploring its functioning state in addition to its potential dysfunctions. For example, imagine that you have been asked to create a science of "watchology." You have two watches that both have had the unfortunate "trauma" of being left in the pocket of someone's jeans through the washer and dryer. One watch has suffered the worst possible fate - it no longer tells time. The other has emerged from the traumatic event still ticking.Which watch would you use to develop your new science of watchology? Clearly, the working watch will help you understand watches better than the broken one. What does watchology have to do with psychology?Quite simply, in psychology as in watchology, it makes sense to start with what works: to gain a general understanding of human behavior and then apply that knowledge to those who have emerged from life's experiences in dysfunction. ... Product Description

“Dodge Fernald writes an interesting, easy-to-read book for students. Each perspective covers the historical underpinnings of psychology, ending with current models and viewpoints as well as comments and critiques of the perspective. That’s important and will help the next generation of scholars in psychology to appreciate alternative views. Nice book!”
Joseph R. Ferrari, Ph.D, Vincent de Paul Distinguished Professor, DePaul University

Addressing six perspectives, this textbook offers the framework for a conceptual understanding of modern psychology. Psychology: Six Perspectives shows students a measure of unity and continuity within this fragmented field by briefly and coherently discussing six primary perspectives that have arisen: biological, psychoanalytical, behavioral, humanistic, cognitive, and evolutionary. Author L. Dodge Fernald provides coherence by presenting these perspectives in successive historical order, offering students a broad, retrospective account of psychology.

Key Features

  • Portrays the fundamental dimensions of this multifaceted field: The similarities and differences among basic concepts, theories, research, and practice of each perspective are examined.
  • Employs both a scientific mode of communication as well as a narrative thread: The real-life narrative of a lonely, stout-hearted social worker unfolds gently throughout the text, illustrating in turn each of the perspectives.
  • Stimulates critical thinking and class discussion: Opportunities for critical evaluation and everyday application provide students with a context for extending their understanding of and investigation into psychology.

Intended Audience

This core textbook or supplementary text is designed for undergraduate courses in general psychology, ranging from special sections of introductory psychology to the capstone course or senior seminar, including the history and systems of psychology.

Instructor's Resources

The Instructor's Resources contain three components: a complete index of the Anna/Bertha narrative, saving instructors time and effort in reviewing that unfolding story in the text; suggested answers for the Critical Thinking questions at the end of each chapter; and a test bank of 400 questions, including multiple choice, matching, and essay questions.

This brief version of Durand and Barlow's best-selling text was created specifically for those professors who were drawn to the authors' standard-setting integrative approach but who wanted a shorter, easier book for their students. In this briefer version, the authors explain abnormal psychology in the most modern, scientifically valid method for studying abnormal psychology. Through this integrative approach, students learn that psychological disorders are rooted in multiple factors: biological, psychological, cultural, social, familial, and even political. Conversational writing style, consistent pedagogy, video clips of real clients (located on the accompanying free Abnormal Psychology Live 2.5 CD-ROM), and real case profiles - 95 percent from the authors' own case files - provide a realistic context for the scientific findings of the book, and ensure that readers never lose sight of the fact that beyond the DSM-IV-TR criteria, the theories, and the research are real people. With this text, students can take advantage of Abnormal PsychologyNow, our web-based, intelligent study system that, by using online diagnostic pre- and post-tests, helps students prioritize their study time by creating personalized study plans that focus only the sections in which they experienced difficulty. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed.
This was the exact book I needed for my course, but $25 cheaper than at my school bookstore. It's a series of mini-books held together in a case. We bring one book to class at a time, according to what chapter we're on, and it's great because it takes up less space in the backpack & is lighter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A FAMOUS PSYCHOLOGIST SEEKS TO MELD EASTERN AND WESTERN THOUGHT
Robert Ornstein (born 1942) is a psychologist, researcher and writer, perhaps best known for his work on left brain/right brain studies. He has taught at the Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute, and been professor at Stanford University. He is also chairman of the Institute for the Study of Human Knowledge, and has promoted modern Sufism (e.g., Idries Shah).

He wrote in the Preface to this 1972 book, "After long searching in many places, I have come to feel that these compelling questions CAN be answered, but, unfortunately, not fully within the mode of reason or intellection. There is no way to simply write down the answer, as we might give a textbook definition. The answers must come personally, experientally... I have tried to do two things at once here: to write what can be written within science, without pretending that such an approach is a complete answer, just as a biologist does not really need a fully agreed-on definition of life in order to study it; and to point to a second stream of knowledge directed toward methods of answering these questions which scientific method excludes, the esoteric traditions of the Middle and Far East."

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"First, try this: say the word 'need' over and over to yourself one hundred times. It becomes 'strange,' loses meaning, and it no longer seems like the same word. That is, mere repetition of a stimulus will cause a change in consciousness."
"Two modes of consciousness exist in man, and function in a complementary manner. Since the dominant mode in our culture is the verbal and rational, recognition of their existence involves us in a cultivation of the second mode, the intuitive and holistic."
"Man is not so closed a system as the Western scienitific community once thought. We are sensitive and permeable to subtle sources of energy from geophysical and human forces which often lie unnoticed in the brilliance of the day."
"The concepts of 'normal' and 'paranormal' are in process of change."

5-0 out of 5 stars Broad perspective on consciousness
Contrary to purely psychology-centered books that miss a lot of the non-behavioral aspects of consciousness and to "spiritual" ones that explain everything based on one point of view, this one discuss both sides of the story. Consciousness is not just about the brain, or thoughts, or some spiritual way of seeing life, but it emcompasses everything, what we are and what we live.

Ornstein shows quite well that the scientific viewpoint is too limited and focused in purpose to broadly explain consciousness. By choosing to deal with the subjective aspects of consciousness, Ornstein provides a full account of the aspects of consciousness that are necessary to improve our understanding of it. To understand consciousness it is necessary to deal with aspects linked to culture, psychology, and education, but also to more experiential (some will say less scientific, more subjective, personal) aspects that cannot be communicated but are equally important to know what consciousness is about.

As pointed out by another reviewer, the second part that deals with non-scientific aspects of consciousness is not well organized. Furthermore, it is largely centered on the Sufi viewpoint. Other eastern philosophies and religions have a lot to say about consciousness and are not treated in this book. But this view of consciousness is mostly subjective and does not fit very well any organization, so i don't think this is a problem. The choice of the Sufi spiritual tradition does seem a good choice to me as Sufism is not really embedded in a particular culture (although some might argue it is grounded on Islam, this point is not relevant as Sufism goes beyond any conception of life or any religious tradition).

I think that this book does a fair job at linking scientific with non-scientific aspects of consciousness. This topic is certainly important for human kind to develop a less dogmatic view of what we are and why. Science is good to answer the "what" question, while religion, philosophy and spitirual practice tackle the "why" answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thought provoking
Being interested in learning new things, I decided to pick up a book on psychology from library. I am glad that I picked this one as my first book on this subject.

Robert starts the book with a simple question and starts discussion around the question and ends the book with a similar question. His opinions and conclusions are very well convincing and well supported with facts. Most of the stuff mentioned in the book just make SENSE.

The organization of the book and the style in which the book was written may not be the very best but the contents of the book make it worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspiring classic points to an extended concept of Man
This book is a concise and inspiring introduction to what behaviorists left out of psychology, written by a pioneer in the scientific study of consciousness. Ornstein writes with humor and clarity, discussing with equal ease those questions of psychology that science can in principle answer, and also with those which require experiential, rather than experimental, answers. This is a classic, with much of continuing relevance 30 years after first publication.

Reviewers and readers alike should remember the words of Omar Khayyam quoted in this book: "I am a mirror, and who looks at me, whatever good or bad he speaks, he speaks of himself."

5-0 out of 5 stars A great companion to Wilbers "Spectrum of Consciousness"
I liked this book very much. Much like Wilber's Spectrum Ornstein does a good job at objectively studing the eastern disciplines. And provides some useful information on how the brain works. This book is quoted in the bibliography of Wilber's Spectrum of Consciousness. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Explanative / helpful, yet not much used
This is a decent book, with many helpful explanations and examples, but I actually never need it except for the table of z-scores in the back, because my instructor provides all the necessary notes in class.

3-0 out of 5 stars Statistical Methods in Education and Psychology (3rd Edition)
I yhought it would be better than what it was.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lay stat. student finds the book very good.
It is amazing to read other reviews, and it became clear how we all come from varied perspectives and view things differently. I have read couple of statistics books trying to understand one thing or the other before, and have not been lucky finding a real fair text (no stat book could really be a jelly anyway!!!). However, I had the hard luck of doing stats for my M.Sc program...and G&H has been wonderful. I can't complain at all. This text is truly great...and note that I am not a prof. So, if non-profs and lay stat. takers like me could benefit from the book...then it is pretty good.

3-0 out of 5 stars book has errors, and author is unresponsive
The book is accessible to humanities students and covers necessary topics in statistics. However, it is important to note that the text is riddled with scientific and mathematical inaccuracies.I wrote a very polite letter to the author about the errors that I found in chapter 2, and he had the audacity to reply as copied below.I think a person has a lot of nerve to charge $118 for a third edition with significant errors, and then to mock a customer:

2-0 out of 5 stars below average, but not terrible
I agree with most the reviewers. This book was clearly written for other professors and advanced statisticians and definetely not students. If you get assigned this book for an introductory statistics class, buy or check out other books from the library.

On the other hand, this book is not totally worthless. If you are well versed in statistics and have had several advanced classes, this book serves as an actually decent review manual.

Overall, in retrospect it was worth the buy. However, I am amazed by the number of professors who actually think this book is adequate for an introductory statistics class.(The typical professor retort "the authors are respected in the field and have published prolifically" doesn't really mean a lot in the real world, where people are more interested in learning and not really impressed by the number of publications a professor has). ... Product Description

Clinical neuropsychologists frequently evaluate individuals within a forensic context, and therefore must address questions regarding the possible presence of reduced effort, response bias and/or malingering. This volume offers a wide range of instructive real-world case examples involving the complex differential diagnosis where symptom exaggeration and/or malingering cloud the picture.

Written by expert forensic neuropsychologists, the scenarios described provide informed, empirically-based and scientifically-derived opinions on the topic. Issues related to malingering, such as response bias and insufficient effort, are discussed thoroughly with regard to a large number of clinical conditions and assessment instruments. Test data and non-test information are considered and integrated by the numerous experts.

Expert guidance for clinicians who must address the issue of malingering is provided in a straightforward and well-organized format. To date, there has not been a comparable collection of rich case material relevant to forensic practice in clinical neuropsychology.

1-0 out of 5 stars Keep looking......Very boring!
This book was utilized in a psychology of religion class I just took and it is boring beyond belief.Much of the research that was used in the examples were questionable. (Sample sizes were too small and control of extraneous variables in some seemed non-existant).This field of psychology is very young and needs books that can present credible research in a way that can stimulate interest. This book constantly says more research is needed in this or that area, but does little to show that the field has any credibility to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A smooth intro to the psychology of religion
The psychology of religion, unlike such well entrenched divisions in psychology as developmental or social psychology, is in its infancy. So much so that it is only beginning to establish itself in the institutions of higher learning.

Thus, one of Dr. Paloutzian's objective in writing this book is to encourage students to see the value of doing psychological studies in religion. Surveying the various research undertaken in the past and present, the author gives a summary of the accomplishments of the discipline as well as the areas in which further studies are needed.

Responding to the clamor for an introductory material to the psychology of religion, Paloutzian has written this readable overview of the field. Being introductory in nature the author does not give lengthy discussions of the theories and empirical studies he cites. His goal is not to expound on these but to whet the appetite of reader and then lead him to the pertinent authors and works. On the other hand in the first few chapters Paloutzian elucidates on the various methodologies employed in the psychology of religion, as well as defining what the psychology of religion is and is not.

For those interested in the psychological aspects of religion, or even for those simply curious to know what this seldom heard of area of study is, Paloutzian's work offers a smooth and enlightening entry into this most fascinating field. ... Read more

There is no such thing as a light, perfunctory revision of David Myers’ Psychology. Each new edition is a fresh opportunity to communicate psychology’s enduring principles and pivotal research in terms that captivate students and connect with their lives.

But even by Myers’ standards, Psychology, Ninth Edition, is truly exceptional. This exhaustive update of the bestselling textbook for introductory psychology incorporates the largest number of new research citations of any revision to date, as well as new inquiry-based pedagogy, a reconceptualized art program, and the next generation of media and supplements.
