Product Description

This book brings cognition to life by demonstrating the endless application of cognitive psychology to everyday life. While introducing the current research in this rapidly changing field, the text also introduces critical thinking exercises that highlight important phenomena and provide an engaging firsthand view of the everyday relevance of research in cognition. The book has three main threads that serve as unifying themes for current research in the field: Cognition and Neuroscience; Cognition and Consciousness; and Cognition and Individual Differences. A “story” introduces the book and is continually referred to throughout in installments, highlighting the application of the information and providing a useful organizing tool.

The book came in a timely manner, and the product was in the condition as described.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This book is great because it uses summaries and vocabulary at the end of each chapter. On top of that, it has review questions through the book that help as well. The only real down-side I had with this book is that it has some activities in it that are unrealistic.

1-0 out of 5 stars A skewed interpretation. Very Biased!
This book presents data and historical facts of psychology in a very skewed manner. The writter seems to be completely in love with several theories in Cognitive Psychlogy and ignores information which contradicts or places serious doubt on his interpretation of experiments and theories.
I would recommend that no one use this book for instructional purposes. There are several other Cognitive Psychology books that stick to the facts or at least are more objective.

Product Description

What shapes political behavior more: the situations in which individuals find themselves, or the internal psychological makeup—beliefs, values, and so on—of those individuals? This is perhaps the leading division within the psychological study of politics today. This text provides a concise, readable, and conceptually-organized introduction to the topic of political psychology by examining this very question.

Using this situationism-dispositionism framework—which roughly parallels the concerns of social and cognitive psychology—this book focuses on such key explanatory mechanisms as behaviorism, obedience, personality, groupthink, cognition, affect, emotion, and neuroscience to explore topics ranging from voting behavior and racism to terrorism and international relations.

Houghton's clear and engaging examples directly challenge students to place themselves in both real and hypothetical situations which involve intense moral and political dilemmas. This highly readable text will provide students with the conceptual foundation they need to make sense of the rapidly changing and increasingly important field of political psychology.

Houghton's work is easily the best introductory book dealing with political psychology. The book is intended for an advanced undergraduate level audience. 4-0 out of 5 stars Ok
There are more interesting books out there on this topic. It was a hard read (because it was so boring) but provided a good resource for class.

2-0 out of 5 stars misrepresentation of product and delivery time
The book was presented as being in "very good" condition, however the book was delivered scuffed on the entire cover and was filled with highlighting and notes written in pen. Also, I paid extra for expedited shipping thinking that it would be mailed express or something. All that meant is that they got it into the mail within a few days, it still took two weeks for delivery.

4-0 out of 5 stars UP TO DATE!
It is no easy to find a book up to date with all the economic issues going on. This one is, and it does a great job illustrating the role f work in peoples live NOW (2009).

1-0 out of 5 stars Instructors beware: Horribly superficial, badly edited
As a grad student, I have read many, many books that are less-than-readable or useful. This book is on my Top Ten Books to Avoid.

First, the authors gloss over extremely important theories, such as Super's and Erikson's, and throw in graphics they've borrowed from other books but never fully explain. The result is a very disjointed, haphazard survey of past and current theories.

Secondly, in some aspects the book does cover cultural diversity adequately. In other areas, their coverage is ludicrous. Regarding Native Americans, they state "[Super's] Life-Career Rainbow also has the potential application for widespread application to Native Americans". First, the editor is asleep at the wheel (two instances of 'application' in one sentence), and secondly, there is no effort to describe why this could be applicable to Native Americans. Anyone who knows this population knows it's complete bunk to think that they could correlate aspects of their lives to such Western terms as Leisurite, Homemaker, or Citizen. It's beyond shoe-horning.

Thirdly, it's clear in too many passages to cite that the authors have a political agenda to put forth, and it's hard to believe that this has not clouded objective thought. It feels very much like we are being talked 'down to' by these 'enlightened' authors. I'm a bleeding heart liberal, and this book made ME cringe in it's tone -- anyone who is politically right to centrist may be offended by this book.

Finally, the structure of the book is haphazard. There is no parallelism throughout that I could ascertain, and so the reader learns different aspects about different theories, never being able to put together a cohesive apples-to-apples perspective. Most offensive is the chapter where the authors both put forth their own theories -- where Erikson gets 2 pages, Peterson dedicates 10 pages to her theory with 17 assumptions, and goes into the detail I wanted for all of the 'real' theories! Also, the editor missed many typos and awkward constructions, and needed to BLEED red ink all over the manuscript.

Ug. It's awful. I've only taken time to review text books once or twice, and only because they were so good. That should tell you how bad this one is.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Role of Work
This book is an excellent treatment of the changing role of work as we move into the 21st century. It also does a wonderful job of dealing with diverse populations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A more balanced Handbook of Positive Psychology
Just published a few days ago, there is now a second positive psychology handbook available, "A Psychology of Human Strengths" edited by Aspinwall and Staudinger. Compared to the first handbook, the new one's 23 chapters by various leading psychologists (including Seligman) are not only, well, "newer" -- they also have a better scholarly balance. For example, the chapter by Cantor on "Constructive Cognition" discusses her work with Norem on constructive pessimism, and this makes a good academic link to the recent book "The Positive Power of Negative Thinking" by Julie Norem. Individual differences mean that no single model of psychological health fits all of us. Realistic psychology must take into account our differences in personality and cultural values. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book
I highly recommend this book! This book is very informal and had very interesting personal stories. The explanation was comprehendible, and had very intriguing articles.

Used this book for studying Psych of Women and passed with an "A".

3-0 out of 5 stars Feminist Slant, yes...
Sure, this book has a decisive feminist stance, but what do you expect of a book on the psychology of women? Most women have at least some "feminist" thoughts, this book reflects that. It's not a book about militant feminism, though it is mentioned, as it is an aspect of the reality of some women.I've only read about 3 chapters of the book so far, but I have seen it bring up some very valid points, such as "The invisibility of women in history".

If you're completely anti-feminist, you shouldn't be taking a class of this nature, because I suspect that any book approaching this subject is going to have a feminist slant.

2-0 out of 5 stars feminist propaganda
This book is not what it says it is. "The Sociology of Women" would be more fitting. "An Introduction to Feminism" would be close to apt.

Dr. Matlin is a familiar breed -- the"I know I'm right so I'll tell others anything in order to get them to believe what I already know to be true" breed.

For instance, there is a page with a drawing of a man and a woman, and Matlin encourages you to show the drawings to a child and ask questions like which one of these people is meek and mild and which one is confident. The problem is, the man is drawn with a confident cowboy body posture and the woman with an unsteady hands-behind-the-back meek stance. The book, of course, implies that the child's response would be solely based on culturally impressed gender stereotypes.

When the book does get around to non-feminist thought, it makes no effort to give the guys a fair shake. Rather than mention any of the perfectly reasonable items on the men's movement agenda (e.g. men shouldn't have to pay more for car insurance or be denied a loan based on gender or be forced to pay child support for a child that isn't their's) Matlin quickly glosses over the idea of the men's movement and portrays it as denying the seriousness of wife-beating.

I'm sure there are many more examples and I'm sure there are much more flagrant examples. I'm not going to find them though, because the five-minute scan that revealed everything you see above was enough to convince me not to take the "Psychology of Women" class at my school.

1-0 out of 5 stars extremely biased
This book is very clearly written by a radical feminist. She presents her opinions as facts and frequently contradicts herself. This book's title is misleading because it is predominantly a book on gender bias and sexism. Moreover, it suppresses all biological perspectives on women's behavior.I am reading this book for an undergraduate psychology class and often find it appalling and one-sided. ... Courses in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Organizational Psychology

From its first edition, two important themes have been the foundation of Ronald E. Riggio's Introduction to Industrial / Organizational Psychology. First, because I/O psychology is a field with both a strong scientific base and an applied orientation, the book demonstrates the connection between psychological theory and application: theoretical concepts are shown to lead to useful interventions. Second, this book was designed and written with the student in mind. Whenever possible, the text draws on examples and illustrations from the world of work that students understand - making for an introductory text that appeals to a wide range of students with varying academic backgrounds.

This student-centered, real-world driven text demonstrates the connection between psychological theory and application in the field of Industrial / Organizational Psychology.

Product Description

Cultural differences affect everything from international relations to the trivial encounters of daily life. Tensions between the U.S. and Japan, strife between African-Americans and Koreans, the difficulty urban youth encounter in adapting to a white-collar professional culture—all can be traced, directly or indirectly, to cultural and psychological barriers.

The Culture and Psychology Reader gathers a wide range of contributors to present a comprehensive guide to the myriad issues at the nexus of culture and psychology. What role have culture, race, and ethnicity assumed—or, rather, been allocated—in American psychology? How do traditionally marginalized groups, such as African-Americans, poor women, lesbians and gays, and bicultural people, perceive themselves and what can this tell us about the interplay between culture and psychology?

Beginning with definitions and an overview, the book examines such issues as development, adaption, the acquisition of culture, the self in a cultural context, and diagnostic assessment and treatment acknowledging the risk of cultural bias.Contributors to this volume include: Clifford Geertz, Richard Shweder, John Ogbu, Laura Brown, Michelle Fine and Adrienne Asch, Cherrie Moraga, June Jordan, Arturo Madrid, Howard Gardner, and Arthur Kleinman.

Editorial Review

Product Description
While scholars in political science, social psychology, and mass communications have made notable contributions to understanding democratic citizenship, they concentrate on very different dimensions of citizenship. The current volume challenges this fragmentary pattern of inquiry, and adopts an interdisciplinary approach to the analysis of citizenship that offers new insights and integrates previously disparate research agendas. It also suggests the possibility of informed interventions aimed at meeting new challenges faced by citizens in modern democracies.

The volume is organized around five themes related to democratic citizenship: citizen knowledge about politics; persuasion processes and intervention processes; group identity and perception of individual citizens and social groups; hate crimes and intolerance; and the challenge of rapid changes in technology and mass media. These themes address the key challenges to existing perspectives on citizenship, represent themes that are central to the health of democratic societies, and reflect ongoing lines of research that offer important contributions to an interdisciplinary political psychology perspective on citizenship. In several cases, scholars may be unaware of work in other disciplines on the same topic and might well benefit from greater intellectual commerce. These themes provide excellent opportunities for the interdisciplinary cross-talk that characterizes the contributions to this volume by prominent scholars from psychology, political science, sociology, and mass communications.
