Key highlights include:

  • Essential questions about professional development
  • Focusing professional development in a standards-based system
  • Creating the culture for a learning community
  • Addressing teacher work concerns through professional development
  • Promoting individual growth through professional learning
  • Challenging districts to sustain professional growth
  • Designing your own model
  • Tools for implementing a professional development design
  • Evaluating professional development
  • Revisiting past perspectives to underscore the need for change
  • Facing the emerging issues and challenges of professional learning

Product Description
Because what we do in staff development can best be understood in terms of Contexts, Strategies, and Structures, the remainder of the book features distinguished educators who write from their own unique experiential and theoretical stances. Jacqueline Ancess describes how teachers in New York City secondary schools increase their own learning while improving student outcomes • Milbrey W. McLaughlin and Joel Zarrow demonstrate how teachers learn to use data to improve their practice and meet educational standards • Lynne Miller presents a case study of a long-lived school—university partnership • Beverly Falk recounts stories of teachers working together to develop performance assessments, to understand their student’s learning, to re-think their curriculum, and much more • Laura Stokes analyzes a school that successfully uses inquiry groups. There are further contributions (including some from novice teachers) by Anna Richert Ershler, Ann Lieberman, Diane Wood, Sarah Warshauer Freedman, and Joseph P. McDonald. These powerful exemplars from practice provide a much-needed overview of what matters and what really works in professional development today. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Left me wanting more
I have been a professional PHP developer for a number of years now, since PHP3 was still being actively developed. I have ready nearly every book on the topic, and have worked on more projects than I will ever remember to put in my Portfolio.

I picked this book up after hearing some fairly good ratings on it, and couldn't wait to get started.

I picked the book up and decided to spend a Saturday reading it (AsI do with almost all of my new books). However, I found myself putting the book down not too long later...

This book has scattered bits of good information that I did flag, but I found much of it repetitive or almost useless. I was very disappointed by the use of Smarty templates, I found myself picking through the Smarty code just trying to get to the actual application (I build what I need for designs, I don't need to rely on a system like Smarty).

While I did appreciate the sections on XML, the Pseudo-coding (Algorithm breakdown), and the table diagrams, I was very discouraged by the coding practices such as print("link"); I personally feel that escape characters are very unorganized and look sloppy.

The section on creating a news service was rendered useless because it has (seemingly implied) gaps in the code, and relies heavily on Smarty templates, again very disappointing.

To shorten the rest of the rating up I'll just be real brief. The section on building a system for phones browsing your website was useless, as well as the wireless MyStuff server, the Advanced CMS section(as well as the Simple Search Engine) both had very poor programming practices, and the writers cover the same concepts over and over in their own ways (Which can get quite boring..)

This book seems too difficult for the beginners, perhaps appropriate for the intermediate who want to learn Smart and some OK (but not great) programming practices, and definitely frustrating for us advanced programmers.

I originally was going to rate this book a 4, but now that I'm done with my review I have decided it only earns a 3...

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book with typical flaws
Wrox Press seem to have become masters at putting together volumes from a large number of authors. This 600-page volume is another example. This way of working does have some drawbacks, there is a little repetition of some basic stuff throughout the book, but not enough to truly detract from it.

The book, after some expository material, details 11 projects of increasing complexity. They use PHP, MySQL, PEAR::DB, Smarty and PHPLib. The target audience, according to the book jacket, are programmers who already have a good knowledge of PHP, SQL Databases and XML. Frankly, I think they overdo the amount of experience you need to use and benefit from this book. If you are on top of all those topics well enough to consider yourself "professional" then this book may be too simple. If, on the other hand, you are, like me, conversant with PHP and SQL but would like to take yourself up to "professional" use of technologies like XML, templating and WAP enabling then this book will be good.

The book is stuffed full of code examples -- and while you can download them in a ZIP file of over 3Mb you shouldn't think of this book as a "cookbook" as such. It shows various methods for performing most of the tasks you need to build solid backend web site systems to deal with a large variety of data. The projects cover importing and exporting of XML, messaging systems, forums, content management, using templates for both HTML and WML, search facilities and both simple and complex content management among other topics.

One thing I did appreciate about this book is how much they left out. No coverage of PHP fundamentals, SQL fundamentals and simple stuff like web forms might be covered once, at most. I certainly didn't need another book on my shelves explaining the basics.

My largest criticism of this book is one shared by too many modern titles for computer programmers; there is too much explanation and too much repetition. The section on SQL is the perfect example. Most projects contain some tables describing each database table, a diagram of the relationships and then the full SQL required to build them, their indices and some example data. For their proposed target audience this is way too much information, and as it is safe to assume that everyone who buys this book has a decent `net connection, why put a printout of SQL available online in a PHP book? I could have easily written the SQL myself and having it in the book doesn't make it much easier and since it was available online it was a total waste of space.

I also have to take exception to, an (admittedly short) chapter devoted to installing and configuring PostNuke. It gives you no more information on this simple task than the online documentation. As someone who has installed PostNuke a couple of times and never needed any assistance beyond the readme files (and the first was long before I considered myself a good PHP programmer) I felt this was a complete waste of space and not "web development" at all.

My final criticism is once again shared by too many modern titles, there isn't really enough discussion of the design decisions and complications. There are enough code examples and walk throughs to satisfy anyone, but not enough key design decisions are discussed at all, with only a few short examinations of any real design problems. I would have appreciated some walk throughs of such things as code that was too slow, problems with race conditions, methods for mixing static and generated parts of a site and all the real world stuff that intrudes when your site gets slashdotted and that code that was so neat with a hundred visitors a day becomes a thousand. Then show how the code they provide is better, avoids the problems and how to get my code to the same state. Since this book is "professional" a little more real world, please.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Promise
I simply enjoyed this book and all the solutions presented in it.
I had earlier mastered PHP from reading "Beginning PHP4" and "Professional PHP4" from the same publisher, and this book was a natural choice to make.
I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone that has a sparse to decent knowledge of PHP - you will love the engaging concepts, designs, code methodolgy and spanking case study solutions.Promise.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, if its what you want...
Before buying this, you should have a SOLID grounding in the theory and practice of php. This book does offer solutions, even ones that seem elegant.

BUT, it never really stops to explain the actual coding. It takes time to explain only the approach they take to the problem and the rationale for their approach. It assumes you understand the code and moves right along. You will not find ANY hand-holding here.

Moreover, of the solutions presented, at least two use XML. So, you might also want to have some xml skills on hand, if you are to make use of a significant part of this book.

Once again, the book seems good and you can learn from it. But, understand that you need a solid php foundation to effectively use this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Solutions for Web Deveopment
Seems Wrox is going great with PHP titles with pretty good collection coming one after another! Being into web development myself, this book has come as a great relief. It has given functions and methods with ready to use solutions. Could actually put them to use modifying them, plugging them in various applications.

A must have for the Web Developers / Designers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Changing Teachers, Changing times...Absolutely....
This work has trulyinspired me. Hargreaves begins and ends with thechallenging observation that the rules of the world are changing. It istime for the rules of teaching and teachers' work to change with them. For me, in his section on futures, Andy underscores the issues facingeducation reform in the nineties.

Hargreaves stresses that understandingthe context, process and consequences of change help us clarify and questionthe choices we make.

From the 'malaise of modernity' questioning thecorporate analogies of educational discussion,Hargreaves refers to RobertMerton's theory that cumulative attentionto the change process oftenleads to "goal displacement", through to the chapter titled theBalkanization of Teaching, Hargreaves is always focussed on the teacher'swork and culture in the postmodern age.

Hargreaves finisheswith a quoteI have used often, as it resonates so clearly and profoundly for me.

" Teachers knowtheir work is changing, along with theworld in which they performit. As long as existing structures andcultures are left intact, repsondingto these complex and accelaratingchanges in isolation will only create more overload, intensifictaion, guilt, uncertainty, cynicism and burnout". ... Product Description
The aim of this book is to take a critical look at continuing professional development policy and practice from a broad European perspective, examining both values and paradigms. In turn, it is hoped this will highlight models and concepts and how these relate to cultural contexts, which will develop lessons to be learned. This issue is tackled from across professions and from several European countries. Not only has a generic European perspective been put forward, but so have perspectives from both northern and southern Europe with a touch of North America to add a little spice. This is an eclectic mix of views and standpoints which are inextricably linked by the editors' and authors' profound belief that only through continuing professional development can progress be achieved at both an individual and an organisational level. It is hoped this book will provide some answers, be informative and stimulate positive debate among both academics and practitioners. CONTENTS: Preface; Magnus Persson. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great textbook, too big though
I got this textbook for my grad class. It has lots of information on human development from conception through the old age.All information is backed up by current research.
My class is over but I will keep this book for my own further reading and looking back if I need some information on development
The only negative side is that this book is very big and heavy; difficult to just casually take to a coffee shop. Then again, perhaps it is not a coffee shop book for most :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellence in Educational Materials
This is the textbook for my Human Development Course. The material is informative, well-presented, and fascinating.Recommend it to anyone interested in Human Lifespan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Human Development
This author writes on a graduate school level. This book is more of a challenge for graduate students. I feel this is beneficial because I am getting more out of my graduate school education with descriptive and elaborate books like this one. The book explores human life and development in more concrete ways and I have absorbed much from it. Amazon delivered this book within 3-4 days which was fantastic; since I needed this book right away for the beginning of the semester. ... Read more

Product Description
Professionals such as medical doctors, airplane pilots, lawyers, and technical specialists find that some of their peers have reached high levels of achievement that are difficult to measure objectively. In order to understand to what extent it is possible to learn from these expert performers for the purpose of helping others improve their performance, we first need to reproduce and measure this performance. This book is designed to provide the first comprehensive overview of research on the acquisition and training of professional performance as measured by objective methods rather than by subjective ratings by supervisors. In this collection of articles, the world's foremost experts discuss methods for assessing the experts' knowledge and review our knowledge on how we can measure professional performance and design training environments that permit beginning and experienced professionals to develop and maintain their high levels of performance, using examples from a wide range of professional domains. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Practical Insights to Developing Great Performers
Development of Professional Expertise is perhaps the finest book I've ever read on how to generate great individual and group performances, and I've read more than 400 books on the topic. Indirectly it shows how ineffective traditional talent management really is at many organizations. Using terms like "work-sample testing, engagement simulation, and after-activity reviews," it provides the reader with a toolbox of approaches that can be applied in any type of organization. The variety of authors and case studies provides extraordinary breadth and depth on the topics of objectively measuring performance and ways to improve it. I can't think of a better investment for any business manager who wants to improve performance throughout his or her organization, or part of an organization.

My favorite parts of this book were the actual methods for improving performance, which include engagement simulation, cognitive apprenticeship, processing activities, modeling, and problem-based methods. My on-going professional quest is to find ways to improve group performance because I believe groups are the fundamental unit of any organization. No individual creates and delivers value to customers in a vacuum. That value is created and delivered by groups of people. Organizations don't create new products or services. It is groups within those organizations that create the new products and services. Consequently any methods that can be applied to improve group performance are very valuable in my opinion.
Even though on page three, it says, "The primary focus of this book is on individual performance," I still believe these methods for improving performance can be applied to groups as well even though it may require some tweaking of the methods.

An additional strength of the book is the breadth of examples and authors. This theme of developing professional expertise was looked at from the eyes of more than 30 authors, all of whom seem to know the content of their chapters very well. This enriched the overall perspective that the reader gained from the book. It would be impossible for any one person to have that much breadth of knowledge and experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, Interesting and Exhaustive
This is an interesting book on how expertise is acquired, maintained and improved in the military and professional arenas. It is a collection of works from many contributing authors - all experts in their fields. It is quite detailed and would be useful for educational professionals, psychologists, university students and others that are interested in the training field.

It is a must read for educational administrators - who in some districts are bent on using the model of 'medical rounds' to improve educational outcomes. Discussed at length in several section are some of the current difficulties faced in keeping medical professional skills up to scratch- where it is argued that in several key areas of diagnosis their capacity fades over time and the mechanisms of meaningful professional development are not in place.

The most interesting sections are on the US military and what it is doing to continually train and prepare its workforce. This is no small task given the complexity and unpredictability of military engagements, and the continual rotation of staff via posting. The National Training Center, and Top Gun are discussed where real life, complex scenarios are used to build operational skills. Constant 'after action reviews' are used as a source of feedback to bring about improvement. the use of modern computer based training is also explored - and this also makes informative reading.

The book presents other ways of designing instructional processes to replace or compliment traditional and largely ineffective approaches of "theory and practical sessions' which are seldom interlinked in a meaningful way. ... Read more

Product Description
This book deals with the many issues involved in making the transition from Access to MS SQL Server. While Access (part of the Microsoft Office suite) has long been the small business database of choice, for enterprise level solutions SQL Server is required. Microsoft is actively encouraging users onto this more sophisticated platform by making Access 2000 compatible with SQL Server. This means solutions can be developed using Access and easily scaled up to the more powerful SQL Server when the need arises.Amazon.com Review
Professional SQL Server Development with Access 2000 shows the experienced database programmer or administrator how to take advantage of SQL Server using the built-in tools and capabilities of Access 2000. Filled with screen shots and plenty of practical advice for working with data, this book proves that Access is a great tool for getting the most out of SQL Server.

Usually associated with the lower end, Access 2000 has clearly grown up with the features that let you connect to SQL Server 7/2000, but with the convenience of a graphical tool. The book covers not only the features of Microsoft databases, but also how to rely on Access 2000 as your tool of choice for common administrative and programming tasks. Starting from table design, and the powerful database diagramming tools available in Access, you learn how to create effective database designs. And a full discussion of joins, indexes, constraints, views, and other advanced features make this book good for even more advanced readers. Besides admin functionality, there's coverage of VBA for database programmers, and T-SQL (Microsoft's version of SQL), including an excellent section on stored procedures and triggers.

While there's a lot of textual description in this book, there are also plenty of easy-to-understand screen shots, making this a useful resource to have at your desk. The graphics that detail the use of Access 2000 toolbars (which list the functions for each tiny button) are very good. The tutorial turns toward using Access 2000 features (forms and reports) to work with SQL Server data on the back end. Later sections examine the options you have for Web development, including Access's own Data Access Pages, data sheets, and a short introduction to using Active Server Pages on Microsoft IIS.

Reference sections of database security and upsizing older Access databases to SQL Server help round out this comprehensive and thoughtfully written book, which shows that Access 2000 really can let you access higher-end features on today's Windows platform. This book is perfect for any administrator or database programmer who wants to benefit from Access and SQL Server used together. --Richard Dragan

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough
As a professional db developer, I found this book from Rick Dobson to be an excellent guide to getting you on your way with Access using SQL Server as the back end. This a rite of passage for many Access developers, like me, who find SQL Server kind of intimidating. Rick takes you through every step of the way very logically, preparing you for your next benchmark. He thoughtfully anticipates your next question with a paragraph or two that explains the reasons why you're doing what you're doing and how to do it. No smarmy digressions, bad jokes or confusing examples. Highly recommended reading for IT developers who want to get to the next level of database development. Great job, Rick!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for making the transition to SQL Server
By far the best book I have seen regarding the difficulties encountered when moving an Access application to SQL Server.Until reading this book, I couldn't figure out why my Access queries that were 'converted' into Stored Procedures could not reference each other, why my forms would not work, why the tables weren't updateable (primary keys weren't copied during conversion), etc.
All these and many more perplexing issues are clearly explained here. For quickest results, read Appendices B and C, then the first 7 chapters before trying to convert your first Access database to SQL Server.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable guide to Access Projects
Having spent a number of years using Access to develop commercial solutions I recently moved on to Access projects and found this book a real find in getting up and running in a short space of time.Covering each topic in logical chunks I found it to be more than a good grounding in the subject. It is also well written in plain English and avoids the unnecessary complications that are often found in such books and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is considering developing Access projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars A professional "getting started" book
I have years of experience in programming but knew nothing about Access, SQL or VBA when I got my latest assignment.I can't stand those 1000 page books that want to hold me by the hand while I build some simple-minded application through eight chapters.I just need to know the basics quick and then see a few examples of some typical tasks. This book is just what I needed to quickly get me up to speed and working on my own application. There are a few minor differences with Access XP (like changed menus) so you'll need a good XP reference also.I recommend this book to any developer that needs to come up to speed quickly on either SQL or Access.

3-0 out of 5 stars Full of typos
I just received this book so I cannot comment on its technical merits. However, I have noticed the book is littered with spelling errors and errors in general. Examples are (1) On page 11 "As but this architecture won't be specifically considered furhter".. and yes, I included all the spelling typos. (2) On page 19 "if you had an Access poject" instead of "project." Isn't this what spell checkers are made for? There is at least one more error that I glanced over but did not record. And I have only read to page 19! My experience has been when a book contains many typos then then code should be suspect. I hope not, because a good Access 2000 to SQL book is needed. Caveat emptor!! 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text and Reference
In the late 90's I searched for a text to use in a graduate level course on real estate development. After reviewing about 15 books this was the best. Most of the students who intended to go into the business kept the text to use as a reference.

ULI is probably the most respected group of real estate professionals in the country ( and now international).

The author was a highly respected professor at USC when the book was written and is now at Harvard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Richard Peiser, currently the Director of the Master of Real Estate Development degree at the University of Southern California, has succeeded in explicitly blending the both subtle and complex field of real estate development into a readable and informative text.It is a guide for everyone from the downtown titans to the suburban spec builder. The usable format includes the fundamentals for financial, market and construction analysis. Will you be able to read the book in the back of a taxi on the way to meet the board of directors for your newly formed REIT and talk them into more money?Probably not, however, it will fill in the holes for an accountant learning market analysis and visa versa. And when you consider that the price is the equilevant of a yard of good carpeting it probably won't hurt to cover your bases. ...
