Product Description

Operating a personal computer requires more than just dealing with the PC itself. As anyone with even a modicum of computer experience can attest, there are all types of hardware devices which you must become familiar with disk drives, printers, monitors, and sound cards, just to name a few. And, naturally, each is fraught with its own set of bugs and snares.

PC Hardware Annoyances, the latest installment of O'Reilly's highly successful Annoyances series, aims to optimize these peripheral systems by offering easy fixes to their most annoying traits. With over 40 titles to his credit, author Stephen Bigelow identifies all those annoyances that make you cringe in frustration. Then, through the use of snappy, entertaining, and practical solutions, he shows you how to clear each obstacle one step at a time. After that, the rest is up to you.

Designed for PC users of all levels, this handy guide doesn't bore you with long dissertations on the workings of the technology at hand.Instead, it offers straightforward, easy-to-understand troubleshooting solutions. For maximum ease of use, PC Hardware Annoyances is broken up into several broad hardware categories. They include desktops, laptops and PDAs, graphics, sound, hard drives, CD/DVD drives, network, and printers and scanners. And while you may not use each of these accessories currently, chances are it's only a matter of time before you'll need their technological services whether it's for work or recreation.

What makes PC Hardware Annoyances especially timely is the growing trend among computer owners to simply upgrade their PCs as they age, rather than replacing them altogether. With peripheral devices becoming increasingly affordable, there's no reason not to.But as with any do-it-yourself project, trouble lurks around the corner if you don't have the right guide.Having difficulty setting up your color inkjet printer?Trying to burn a music CD?Is your modem misbehaving? The remedy: PC Hardware Annoyances, of course!

4-0 out of 5 stars resource-full book, but little for the average computer user

Do you know how to get to Mouse Properties in the control panel without instructions? If not, then you might not be able to follow half the material in this book.

Examples of Annoyances addressed in this book:
"I replaced my CMOS backup battery just a few months ago, but I still see occasional CMOS battery errors..."
"I updated my BIOS and need to clear the CMOS RAM, but my motherboard lacks the proper jumper..."
"I want to overclock my PC..."
"Will my system crash if two PCI devices share the same IRQ line?"
"I tried to install DDR333 DIMMs along with my existing DDR400 DIMMs... I thought the modules were compatible..."
"I ran the System File Checker for Windows XP and got a DLL cache error."

There are a few easier topics that an average computer user like me can find useful and understandable ("My CD-RW drive refuses to eject my audio CD."), but the examples above are typical of the difficulty level of the content.

I'm a big fan of the Annoyances series, and this is a book meant for those who are keenly interested in computers, so I'll make sure to go back and read it after I've accumulated more knowledge. In the meantime, it'll serve as a standby reference to consult if a particular hardware problem comes up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This is one of the most useful books I have ever bought.I had three particular problems in mind, and I wasn't buying this book specifically for them; it was more for reference. But I opened it up and it had clear, concise, and easy instructions for doing what I needed- much better than the information I had gotten through hours of internet searches into the problems.

This is a must own for any PC owner, ESPECIALLY if you have Windows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting resource for hardware hackers
I liked this book, but that's easy because it's a topic that interests me. If hardware hacking is something that you enjoy you will probably find a lot to like in this book. Because in general it's all about the tips and tricks.

That being said this book, like all of the Annoyances books, is not a complete reference. You won't find the list of PC cards, but you will find tips on how to fix flaky USB connections and the like.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to have around "just in case"...
O'Reilly has a series of Annoyances books on the market, and I recently had a chance to review the PC Hardware Annoyances book by Stephen J. Bigelow. It's a really good book with an enormous number of tips and tricks to fix misbehaving computer components.

Index

As you can see, Bigelow covers a lot of ground in the book.I almost view this as a combination between a Hacks book and a compilation of questions asked by readers. And in fact, the compilation angle is pretty accurate.O'Reilly solicits annoyances from a number of sources, and these submissions make up a large part of what the author writes about. The questions can range anywhere from pretty basic ("my cursor skips all over the screen, and the mouse doesn't seem to be controlling it very well") to pretty advanced ("I get an HPF9XDR0 error whenever I try to print to my HP printer"), and Bigelow covers all of them with complete and often humorous information. In between the annoyance/fix entries, you will find a number of warnings, tips, and tools that will make your interactions with your hardware much more error-free.

The "bad" thing about a book like this is that *your* particular annoyance may not be covered.Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do about that. But the breath of questions covered should give you some insights that can be applied to your problem if it isn't answered directly. This is a book you probably want to have around your bookshelf "just in case" something goes wrong.Very well done. ... Product Description

Today's digital cameras provide image data files allowing large-format output at high resolution. At the same time, printing technology has moved forward at an equally fast pace bringing us new inkjet systems capable of printing in high precision at a very fine resolution, providing an amazing tonality range and longtime stability of inks.

Moreover, these systems are now affordable to the serious photographer. In the hands of knowledgeable and experienced photographers, these new inkjet printers can help create prints comparable to the highest quality darkroom prints on photographic paper.

This book provides the necessary foundation for fine art printing: The understanding of color management, profiling, paper and inks. It demonstrates how to set up the printing workflow as it guides the reader step-by-step through this process from an image file to an outstanding fine art print.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book
If you are thinking to seriously go to the fascinating road of the fine-art printing, this is a "must have" book

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold Mine.
This is one book that you must have in your library if you are a photographer or simply an ambitious to-be art-dealer or even if you try to manage your own simple printer at home. At least, I can say you must have it if you are a beginner in the field. I'm not a professional in the field of fine art, so I won't say you really need it if you are so! I don't think so at all!

The book elaborated many aspects and even introduced new aspects for me. I didn't understand the importance of monitor calibration for example, until the moment I read about it here. The book also mentions some tools and software that you might need and make a discussion about some of them and how to use them, but of course you don't have to take it all as some of these tools are really expensive, but it is good to have an idea. If you are serious and ambitious about printing your own work, then yes, you might considering buying some of these stuff! I can say now that from reading this book, I've discovered that many print shops here do not really follow the systematic and accurate way for their prints, and that's why I had problems with them before.

The book discusses many scientific and technical aspects about the making of inks, papers and even printers themselves and the different types of techniques in printing and I can say almost that it discusses sufficiently the concept of printing from A to Z. Notice, however, because of the great depth of the matter here which really needs a personal experience in lot of places and discussions, Uwe and Jürgen discuss their own trials and errors and experience in regard of some types of inks or techniques or papers.

It has also advices on how to preserve your prints, how to frame and mat them, and how to take care of your inks and printers. There are as well some discussions involving using a software like Photoshop for example, in order to enhance your image and deal with the contrast in regard of your printer's own capabilities. Personally, I find it useful if the person has already a background on some tools like this prior to reading although the text is really simple and dedicated to beginners. At some points, there are some comparisons in between various versions of Photoshop (for their dialog boxes or some available options), however, the highest version of Photoshop in the highlight here is CS3. It's not a bad point or anything. Take the extract and you can deal with various programs other than Photoshop anyway.

In the last chapters, there is a personal discussion about printers and papers used by the authors, and some comments and discussions about them as well. At the end there is a glossary for many relevant terms and an index that can help you sweep through the book quickly in case you need a tip about something. I find this is essential for books like this. Because of the tremendous amount of information that you can learn here, personally, I don't think I can memorize the many facts mentioned here and hence, this book will not stay cold in the future. I will keep it at hand for any help I would need with my printer and photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars more in-depth than the average book
Read this one when you have time to devote to it. It will give the reader a lot of review on technique that will improve your end results greatly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good book
I found this book to be informative and well written. I was able to improve my printing skills and that is why I purchased the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I was hoping for something that would provide in-depth insights into high quality print making, the use of profiles, etc., but did not find anything here that isn't covered better elsewhere. The title suggests that this book is about high quality printing using ink jet printers, but itdevote several pages to the history and features of other print technologies.A major section of the book also discusses the latest technology from the major printer manufacturers, but this is transitory information that tends to lose relevance very quickly - information that I would look for online or in a magazine, not in an expensive book.It reads like a high school term paper where the author tries to display his knowledge of everything. The book simply lacks focus, and I would not recommend it. ... Product Description
This Industry Risk Ratings report from IBISWorld evaluates the inherent risks associated with the Computer & Printer Leasing in the US industry. Industry Risk is assumed to be 'the difficulty, or otherwise, of the business operating environment'.

The report looks at the operational risk associated with this industry. Three types of risk are recognized in our analysis. These are: risk arising from within the industry itself (structural risk), risks arising from the expected future performance of the industry (growth risk) and risk arising from forces external to the industry (external sensitivity risk).

This approach is new in that it analyses non-financial information surrounding each industry. Industries are scored on a 9-point scale, where 1 represents the lowest risk and 9 the highest. The Industry Risk score measures expected Industry Risk over the coming 12-18 months.

Industry Definition

This industry includes companies that lease or rent office machinery and equipment such as computers, printers, office furniture, copiers, facsimile (fax) machines and multi-function equipment. Lease terms may allow for an upgrade of the equipment during the lease period, purchase of equipment at an agreed residual price, servicing of equipment and supply of consumables such as printer and toner cartridges.

Report Contents

Risk Overview

The Risk Overview chapter includes sections on Industry Definition and Activities, Industry Risk Score and Risk Rating Analysis. The Industry Definition and Activities section provides a detailed definition of the activities carried out by operators in this industry as defined in NAICS.A list of the primary activities of the industry is also included. The Industry Risk Score section provides the Overall Industry Risk Score as well as the Risk Scores for each of the three types of risk covered that combine to form the Overall Industry Risk Score. These three types of risk are Structural Risk, Growth Risk and External Sensitivity Risk. The Risk Rating Analysis section discusses the underlying factors contributing to the Overall Industry Risk Score.

Structural Risk

The Structural Risk chapter looks at risk arising from within the industry itself and provides a detailed discussion of the industrys level of exposure to seven key indicators. These key indicators are Barriers to Entry, Competition, Industry Exports, Industry Imports, Level of Assistance, Life Cycle Stage and Volatility of Industry. The Overall Structural Risk Score is a weighted aggregation of these seven key indicators. Each of the key indicators is discussed in detail in this section.

Growth Risk

The Growth Risk chapter looks at risks arising from the expected future performance of the industry. The Overall Growth Risk Score is determined by amalgamating the scores for Recent Industry Growth and Forecast Industry Growth. Detailed analysis is provided discussing the reasons for the growth scores of both.

Sensitivity Risk

The Sensitivity Risk chapter looks at risks arising from forces (sensitivities) external to the industry. The Overall External Sensitivity Risk Score is determined by identifying the most significant (up to 6) external factors and weighting them to represent how significant each sensitivity is to the performance of the industry.Examples of External Sensitivities are Exchange Rates, Interest Rates, Commodity Prices and Government Regulations. There is also a detailed analysis of the affect each of the sensitivities has on the industry, including charts and data tables where appropriate.

Industry Risk and Industry Risk Scoring Methodology

This chapter provides an overview of how IBISWorld defines Industry Risk and discusses the methodology used to arrive at an Industry Risk Score. There is also a table that provides a definition of the seven levels of Industry Risk.

There are some good ideas in the book, but some of these ideas are free on the website provided in the book. There is also a sample in the intro pages of the book about a pillow made from a design on a tissue box, but no instructions on how to replicate the project.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Computer Crafts For All

**** RECOMMENDED

1-0 out of 5 stars tacky and pointless
I checked this book out of the library rather than buying it, thankfully. Virtually every pattern in this cheesy book is available on the author's (equally cheesy) website for FREE, with links to buy materials to make the projects directly from the author. How genius. The information in this book is so fundamental that it is laughable, and easily available for free on the internet with minimal effort. This is just a really dumb book.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than Just Computer Craft Projects
This book by Marcelle Costanza is more than just 50 computer craft projects. It is packed with useful information for the beginner and advanced computer crafter. Costanza begins with the background and history of computer crafts, the growth of computer crafting techniques and the popularity of computer crafts on the web. Next, she discusses the tools you will need to get started such as a computer, printer, software, special papers, inks, scanner and digital camera. She covers what is available on the market and what to look for when choosing the best equipment for your needs. She also gives some useful tips that she has discovered over the years.

One thing that makes this book stand out from the others on this topic is the section about starting your own computer crafts business. Costanza shares her experiences and knowledge gained while starting her own business and discusses what options you have available as you make those startup decisions.

The main part of the book is the step-by-step instructions for the 50 craft projects. Here you will find some favorites such as a candy bar wrapper, note pad and memory book. But you will also enjoy some projects you may not have considered before such as a Barbie doll outfit and a revolving musical carousel. There is also a thorough list of computer craft websites, communities and suppliers.

Marcelle Costanza is a long time traditional and computer crafter and started her online business, The Crafty PC, in 2000.

5-0 out of 5 stars Computer Crafting Book for the Technically Challenged

2-0 out of 5 stars Beware of Books That Say They Are Complete
First of all I am a fairly serious amateur photographer, and had my own darkroom before digital cameras came on the scene, and I love working with Photoshop.

That said let's see what exactly is in this book that has received a wide spectrum of reviews.
The first part of the book discusses choices in buying printers. I have always been curious about how many people actually go out and plunk down a bunch of money to buy a book about buying a printer or a camera. To me the best way is to get recommendations from other people or look up reviews of products on the internet.

The author then presents information on the printer software screen that pops up when you want to print your photo. Contrary to what one reviewer wrote, the book does not discuss printers other than Epson, and the discussion and pictures of the software screen are all about Epson printers. He does discuss that old bugaboo of picture resolution vs printer resolution, something that has always puzzled me. One interesting bit of information is that if your picture resolution (not printer resolution) is above 400dpi your picture may deteriorate in the printing process.

Then follows a fairly useless section of about 50 pages dealing with adjusting your photographs in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. The information is very rudimentary, and cannot suffice as a manual for photo manipulation. After all there are 800 page books on this subject. One and a half pages on layers and layer masks? No way. The manual that comes with Photoshop is 400 pages long, and is still inadequate for most people.

There is a section on basic color management which is informative if you've had no real orientation to the subject.

The last part of the book is devoted to subjects such as matting, framing and displaying photographs, and doing special projects such as making letterheads and mailing labels.

The book ends on the topic of changing color prints to black and white, and making panorama shots and prints. Again only a bare bones approach to these subjects.

Finally Mr. Sheppard talks about archival values of printer paper. Interesting, but the discussion involves only Epson papers. That's fine with me as I own 4 Epson printers, but not so fine if you own a Canon.

I bought this book sight unseen because I wanted an entire book on management of photos between computer and printer. To my intense disappointment I found that only 25 pages of this 160 page book were on this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information.
I've been using an Epson wide-format printer for quite awhile, but I still learned something from this book.It covers more than the Epson line, too, so I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about how to get the best output of their digital images.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concice, and to the point.
Many digital photographers are struggling with the ink jet printing process, Rob Sheppard's book is a great guide ot help demystify the terms and procedures that
might other wise stand in the way of making great prints.Rob explains in a clear and concise manner his approach to the printing process.I have recommened this book
to a number of friends looking for a way to get started, the right way, in ink jet
printing. Way to go Mr Sheppard, another helpful book from you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great info for anyone who prints
Rob has done another outstanding job with this book on digital printing. For anyone with questions on how to get the most out of your image before you print and then how to get the most out of your printer, this is the book for you! When people ask me about books that can help them with their printing, I always refer to Rob's book.

Product Description
The US printing machinery and equipment manufacturing industry includes about 400 companies with combined annual revenue of about $3 billion. Major companies include Canon USA, Goss International, Hewlett-Packard, Presstek, and Xerox. The industry is concentrated: the 50 largest companies generate about 70 percent of revenue.

The printing machinery and equipment industry doesn't include textile printers or home and office printers connected to PCs or small office/home office desktop publishing systems. Home and office printers are covered in the Computer Peripheral Equipment Manufacturing industry profile.

COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE

Demand is driven by commercial print volume, which depends primarily on advertising and other business needs for printed material. Profitability of individual companies depends primarily on manufacturing efficiencies. Large companies enjoy economies of scale in purchasing and manufacturing. Small companies can compete effectively by serving niche markets, such as envelope printing.

PRODUCTS, OPERATIONS & TECHNOLOGY

Major products are printing presses and related parts, accessories, and attachments (about 40 percent of industry revenue); prepress equipment (20 percent); and binding machinery (10 percent). The predominant printing press technology used is offset lithography, but the industry is transitioning to digital presses for many applications. Other types of printing technologies include rotogravure, flexography, screen printing, and letterpress. Rotogravure is used for high-quality printing and is expensive. Flexography is used primarily for printing on packaging materials. Screen printing has applications ranging from art prints to stationary. An ancient printing technique, letterpress remains popular among hobbyists, ... ... Read more

From the supplier: Colleges and universities lead the way in using peripheral-sharing devices because of the unique needs of educational institutes. Schools may have 12 to 24 microcomputers or more running simultaneously, yet need only one or two printers. Educators want the capacity to share other types of peripherals such as modems, plotters and digitizing scanners. Local area networks (LANs) can accomplish this task, but usually offer more power than is needed. Device sharing hardware is more cost-efficient and easier to use than LANs. Most peripherals fall into three categories: manual, automatic and smart switches. Manual switches, the least efficient, consist of a device connecting two or four computers to one peripheral. Automatic switches handle all switching tasks internally and allow users to ignore what the printer is doing. Smart switches do everything an automatic switch does and much more.
