The ideas introduced can be used with typically developing children as well as with children with various disabilities, but the book is geared to supporting 2- to 5-year old children with special needs. There are numerous adaptations for children with severe and/or multiple disabilities as well as new content on challenging behavior, and the book has been updated to reflect growing knowledge in the field. Most young children with additional educational needs are enrolled in their local childcare center or pre-school. Whether they have delayed or advanced skills, many will need extra support from teachers and childcare workers so that they can participate fully in these settings.

Educating Young Children with Special Needs is a comprehensive guide to working with these children. It outlines how to recognize when young children have atypical needs, individualize relevant programs for them, and make sure that they can participate socially with other children in the group. 5-0 out of 5 stars This was a great starter book for me...
When my child was 18 months old, she started doing some jaw dropping stuff, at the same time, she was overwhelming and intense to parent. This book set me on a course of really learning how to deal with this unusual child.I especially enjoyed the section about the emotions the parent goes through when all this lands in their lap.I was truly overwhelmed and feeling isolated, and this book really helped me feel better.I hope it can help you as well, it is really for the parent of a toddler who is noticing that maybe their child is different...

5-0 out of 5 stars a helpful book
Practical and full of good info and tips on parenting the "gifted child". Saunders moves beyond the parental ego-stroking and takes the time to educate the reader on the "hows" of "giftedness" and the challenges a parent and child face. I highly recommend this book for anyone that feels they need advice on raising a child that seems to be one step ahead.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
I have to say that although I was quite skeptical, this is a great book. It has wonderful ideas for fun things to do at home, has some resources (phone numbers, addresses) for parents, and has good advice. It is well-balanced in its approach.

2-0 out of 5 stars Bringing Out The Best
A lot of what I read about this book was misleading to include previous customer comments. This book is geared for parents with very young children, ie. baby's & toddlers.I bought this book mainly because of the section titled: Coping With The Schools. This is very misleading. As it turns out, this section is on how to choose a Preschool & various Caregivers activies they can do with the child. However, in this book's defense there's a section on "How To Be Your Child's Advocate In The School System" but again, this is geared mainly for the very young child.

If you have a toddler or a child younger than the age of 5 then this book is loaded with good developmental information, interactive activities between parent and child, and what toys to buy for this young child. If you have a child over the age of 5, this book will not be useful.

In addition, the first copyright of this book is 1986 & there was an update in 1991. So to advertised as "Revised and updated" is also misleading. It's definitely time for another update not to mention the graphics are old & outdated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Not the typical alarmist book about our precious kids not having enough Latin/French/German by the time they're two years old.Recognizes giftedness as an opportunity for success academically as well as an opportunity to live a rich life, and offers practical, real-world advice about how to nurture and feed the "hungry mind" personality. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
This book was bought because we have a girl who has just started wearing glasses due to her traveling eye in our preschool program. It was a great book and we will use it a resource in the future!!

5-0 out of 5 stars 4 year old LOVES her patch now and WANTS glasses!
I was nervous when my 4 yr old was diagnosed with amblyopia because I didn't think my willful girl was going to take to wearing the patch.Well....I was right! The first few days were nightmarish, even though we used puffy paint and decorated the pirate-style patch from the drug store.

I ordered My Travelin' Eye the day after her diagnosis, and as soon as we got it, she asked for it to be read to her every day, sometimes twice a day.She loves the book and now accepts the need to wear her patch. She knows which is her "travelin' eye" and is anxious to go back to the doctor to learn if she will need glasses. She WANTS GLASSES NOW!We'll see when the day comes - but I truly don't know how we would have managed this speedbump without this book.It is priceless in our collection. We're still reading it at least 4 times a week.

If you have a young child who needs to wear a patch - this book might be just what you need!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Travelin Eye Great Read for Children
My Travelin Eye is the story of a child who has an eye problem that causes her eye to turn in.The story takes you through the process of visting an eye doctor having the eye patched and getting a pair of glasses. It also deals with the reactions of the girl's classmates to the eye patch and new pair of glasses. This is a great book for teaching tolerance for those who may me a little bit different from ones self.A great book for school libraries or parents who have children with a smiliar eye problem.

Product Description

This book will ?sell like hotcakes?! If you understood that last statement, you subconsciously interpreted an idiom, an expression with meanings other than its literal meaning. Most people learn the meanings of these terms and sayings through social contexts as they grow up. But for children who lack that ability, basic communication can get very confusing. The third book in Karen Emigh's series, Book Worm introduces young readers to a world of idioms, narrated by Brett, and his helpful dog, Herman. Playful dialogues, clear explanations, and colorful images make figurative language understandable and fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Go In A Circle
An excellent book for people of all ages!I am using this book for an educational program to make the public aware of the differently abled.I am also a member of NARHA and I have recommended this book to all of my colleagues.

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Chance for a horse & uncountable number of smiles
A race horse spends a lot of their time going around in circles, sometimes the circles leads to racing the fastest and coming in 1st.The horse feels important and special to when it does win. With race horses many get hurt and are unable to race again, some get that " Lucky Break" so to speak are heal.

This is a fictional story about race horse who is hurt and gets a 2nd chance to become a therapy horse. Although the horse still goes in circles, the has many children sit upon it's back some children can't walk, some are blind, can't talk but all seem to have one thing in common with their special horse... they all feel important, they all feel special and they all smile!

At the end of the book the author who is a volunteer at Therapy ranch explains all about Hippo therapy or horse therapy and how the rocking motion of the horses relaxes muscles that are too tight and strengthens muscles that are week. How horseback riding increases self esteem, improves balance & coordination. The author also says that Hippo or Horseback riding therapy always needs volunteers to help. And that if you are interested you can search the websites for Horseback Riding Therapy or Hippo Therapy.

What a neat story and I like the illustrations very much.

4-0 out of 5 stars We Go In a Circle
Good picture book to use to teach getting along with other children that are not like us. Shows another animal that is used for children's therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A one of a Kind Horse Story
This book is truly one of a kind. Most horse books focus on how fast a horse can run or how high they can jump; this one focuses on how useful a horse can be.

This is the only children's book written about therapeutic horseback riding. The author did a fantastic job describing how a lesson at a therapy barn is run. The whole story is just incredibly well written. Taking an injured racehorse and turning it into a therapy horse would not be the best idea, but it does make for a beautiful story.

The illustration could be a bit better; the horses need some work so it looks like they can actually bend their knees. However, the illustrator did use brilliant colors and her watercolor like style makes every page pleasing to readers of all ages. All of the equipment from the basketball hoop to the mounting ramp is drawn completely accurately.

This story is so good for the self-esteem of young riders. The whole book focus on how the riders make the horse and the volunteers feel special and important. This is one of the few, if not only, children's book written about therapeutic riding.

Every therapeutic riding stable needs to have a copy of this book! Parents, riders, and volunteers would all love this book.
