4-0 out of 5 stars Good on flint and stone working...tools
The discussion of tool industries as to how they were produced and how they were used by early man and his ancestors is very good: the best I have seen.
The book is dated for sure, but the place names and dates are still pretty good as reference. The writing style is somewhat dry, but readable.
The mention of carbon dated hearths in the new world at 23800, 28000, and 37000 years and then the default to Clovis was a disappointment.
On reason this book is as dated as it is, is because of recent results
in this area of new world dates. A whole new generation of authors will write about the new coastal and boat paradigms that extend new world population back much further than in this generation of books. ... Read more

Product Description
This exploration of world history takes an interdisciplinary, global (rather than a regional or national) approach - tracing those major forces, movements, and events that had a world-wide impact. Surveying a full sweep of world history, the sixth edition provides a balanced coverage of both Eastern and Western regions, from earliest man to the present day. It combines all the information contained in "The World to 1500" and "The World Since 1500", but includes new material on the following: the earliest humans, Africa, European expansion in the age of discovery plus comparative data on Russian expansion, information on plant and animal diffusion in the modern world, and new information on the Portuguese slave trade. In particular this new edition connects the past, present and future and the combination of resulting patterns, drawing implications for the future should those patterns emerge once again. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps The Best Overview of History
I've looked at a number of overviews of world history and this is my favorite. It's written with great knowledge and a balanced viewpoint. I really like that the causes and mechanisms of history are presented and not just a stream of facts. It's told with emphasis on the general not the detail - there's no page long sidebars on Michaelangelo for instance. There's lots of statistics and maps to show how the world was changing. The other book of it's type that I really liked is "Rise of the West" by William McNeil which has a similar outlook.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sophomore IHS Global History Experience
For anyone who knows an IHS student, this is the true experience - provided that it's followed by a 150 problem multiple choice test the next day. It's a long detailed read, with a strong tendency towards Marxist tones and theories. If you've got the time and attention span to sit still and concentrate long enough to get into this book, it really is a fascinating experience - well organized, factual, and with separate text from primary sources relevant to the chapter or section which provides continuing evidence or alternate opinions. Otherwise, I'll refer you to the friend with the cancer sticker. =)

4-0 out of 5 stars I had to read it sophmore year.
For those who love a very long, small print read about all that has ever happened, this is it.I guess I have to say that this is written from a biased point of view. You see, I had to read it as my text book for my sophmore year in high school. But unlike most people in my class, I love history. But the reason that I am not giving this a higher rating is because I had to read it late into the night and then be tested on it the next day. That can discourage some people. My favorite thing that I have seen about it is that somebody this year took the sticker off a packet of cigaretts and placed it on their copy of Stavrianos so that the cover now says, "This causes cancer!".The reason that I am not giving it a lower rating is because Stavrianos really spent a lot of time making this tome, and really knows his stuff.I could not imagine the brainpower needed to orchestrate such a book. So, if you are into the scholary view of history from prehistory to the end of the cold war, then by all means you can hunker down for weeks and months with Stavrianos. But if you have to read this for school then, hey man, I've been there too, I know how it feels. ... In her powerful and bold writing style, best-selling author Marilyn French synthesizes women’s history from our pre-historical roots through the rise of states across the globe to the onset of state-backed religions in this first of four readable volumes.

Product Description
Aegean prehistory has developed over the 20th century into a distinctive and vibrant area of archaeological research. The past few decades, in particular, have seen a dramatic reorientation and expansion of goals and methods as well as a flood of new fieldwork in the Agean. Keeping abreast of these new developments has become a daunting task. Aegean Prehistory: A Review contains detailed syntheses of research, originally published in the American Journal of Archaeology and newly updated here. The volume conveys the diversity and richness of current approaches to the discipline of Aegean prehistory whilst also marshalling an enormous amount of information pertaining to field projects, museum studies, analyses of materials and texts, and supporting theories of interpretation. An introduction by Tracey Cullen places the review articles in historical perspective, tracing the evolution of Aegean prehistory from the 19th century to the present. The author also considers the current status of the discipline - its relationships with classical archaeology and anthropology, and the manner in which it is shaped by various sociopolitical forces. Aegean Prehistory: A Review is a powerful research tool for the exploration of Aegean themes. With its expansive and detailed coverage, the book constitutes essential reading for professionals and students of Aegean prehistory. It will also be of great interest to all who wish to learn more about intellectual trends and current discoveries in this part of the Mediterranean. Perhaps most important, Aegean Prehistory: A Review provides a solid foundation upon which Aegean archaeology can build as it continues to thrive in the coming years. Contents: Introduction (Tracey Cullen); Review of Aegean Prehistory I: The Islands of the Aegean (Jack L Davis); Review II: The Prepalatial Bronze Age of the Southern and Central Greek Mainland (Jeremy B Rutter); Review III: Crete from Earliest Prehistory through the Protopalatial Period (L Vance Watrous); Review IV: The Stone Age of Greece from the Palaeolithic to the Advent of the Neolithic (Curtis Runnels); Review V: The Neolithic and Bronze Age of Northern Greece (S Andreou, M Fotiadis, K Kotaskis); Review VI: The palatial Bronze Age of the Southern and Central Greek Mainland (Cynthia W Shelmerdine); Review VII: Neopalatial, Final Palatial and Postpalatial Crete (P Rehak, J G Younger). Product Description
Data from molecular genetics have changed our views on the origin, spread and timescale of our species across this planet. But how can we reveal more detail about the demography of ancient human populations? For example, is it possible to determine when and how many people arrived at a certain continent, and which route they took from a choice of geographically plausible options? One of the most promising tools for such investigation is computer simulation incorporating various demographic scenarios. The simulation outcomes must be evaluated by teams with archaeological expertise, since archaeological evidence is generally the best evidence currently available on the population histories of geographical regions. This book is a summary of the landmark conference held in Cambridge in 2005, where specialists in simulations and molecular genetics as well as archaeologists came together to present and evaluate the state of the art, and to discuss future possibilities. ... Product Description
This volume represents a pioneering examination of the nature and identities of Aegean prehistory as a discipline. Emerging from a workshop that generated lively debate among a wide cross-section of scholars, it offers one of the first published attempts to situate Aegean prehistory within a modern self-critical and reflexive context. The chapters and commentaries together yield a multidisciplinary discourse, covering such topics as the current health and academic status of the field, the political and social parameters of the discipline, the relationship between Aegean prehistory and Hellenism, and the discovery of the "Aegean" by Greek modernists.

Contents: Reflections on the "Aegean" and its Prehistory: Present Routes and Future Destinations; "Just the Facts Ma'am": Surveying Aegean Prehistory's State of Health; A Profile of Aegean Prehistorians in the 1990s; The Landscapes of Modern Greek Aegean Archaeology; Embedding Aegean Prehistory in Institutional Practice: A View from One of its North American Centers; The Aegean Prehistorian's Role in Classical Studies Today; Greek Modernists' Discovery of the Aegean, or How the Aegean Came to Occupy Greece's Center; Round a Bigger Pond; On Our Political Relevance?; Whither Aegean Prehistory? ... 1-0 out of 5 stars questionable information and not reliable
I have read this book with great interest as to the accuracy of the NOW generation of information of the 21st century on the Northeastern Woodlands Native Americans.I find this book only to be the regurgitations of previous authors of the same Native people. There are spins of the truth that have come forth that are absolutely not of any accuracy nor of proven facts.Resources of live Natives of this region, available to the authors access, have been dishonored by the complete disregard to state the truth and facts about The Abenaki and in whole the Wabankai people and their allies who are part of the whole of the Abenaki people.I find the author to have written a book, only to have his name published for selfish gains and not to inform the reader of the facts. His writings are non other than trampling on the bodies and spilling of the blood of all involved who have actively partook in the creation of this history over the many centuries, on the backs of other peoples previously published and nonpublished works. No new information has been provided. However a lot of new disinformation and confusion has made this book not worth the match to burn it with. ... Product Description
The book is a study of Gregory the Great, the pope who sent Augustine (of Canterbury) and his fellow missionaries to convert the heathen English to Christianity (597). Markus gives a full account of Gregory's life and work, his thought and spirituality, within the setting of the world at the end of the sixth century. At a time of catastrophic change in Europe, Gregory's work as pope stands on the threshold of medieval Western Europe. The book deals with every aspect of his pontificate, providing a major contribution to the study of late antique society. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good history book
Very clearly written and readable work, from a man who very well knows his subject.Well-supported history of Gregory's place in the world at the end of the 6th century when everything seemed to be coming to an end.A scholarly work that generally stops where the scholarship stops.I wouldn't actually have minded a little more lively anecdote and conjecture (if identified as such), but that's just me.Very good book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gregory the Great and his world
An extensively researched historical biography of one of the great Popes of the Catholic Church and a doctor of the Church. Though necessarily dry by nature of the work, still it tells an interesting story and offers a real appreciation for the world during Gregory's rein as Pontiff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Reference!
Just bought this today on a remainder rack.

I have lots of large format atlases but I must say this one is really outstanding, covering all of the ancient world to 500 BC with wonderful detailed maps and a well-constructed, functional timeline along the bottom of each page.

My biggest gripe in reading even the best history book is often a lack of functional maps.Even if you know the geography pretty well, easy-to-read large format maps are a real boom to your studies.Yet most books neglect them or entirely omit them. Cunliffe's [Europe Between the Oceans] had beautiful color maps that typically lacked many of the place names he referred to in his text.Kagan's volume one [The Outbreak of the Peloponnesian War], which I'm currently reading, lacks even a single map.I mean I'm pretty familiar with the Aegean and Ionia and even Magna Graecia to some degree circa 450 BC, but there are hundreds of city states; I have a color map I downloaded off the net folded into the back of the book for reference.

I also have almost a full shelf of various kinds of atlases, including many from the "Cultural Atlas" series, but these generally get bogged down with a focus on encyclopedic information in very small print and often feature maps that contain so many details they are almost unreadable -- like some travel maps of major metro regions so criss-crossed with highways and interstates that they fail as instruments of navigation.

Haywood's [Historical Atlas of the Ancient World], on the other hand, is clear in its purpose and its presentation. I'm currently also reading [The Horse, the Wheel and Language] by Anthony about the proto-Indo-Europeans, as well as [The Ancient Near East: A History] by Hallo, and I am so impressed by the way the Heywood atlas illuminates both by actually capturing a wealth of place names referred to by modern archaeologists and historians that are often left off of other historical maps.I strongly recommend this atlas to everyone who craves maps as reference to their reading the way that I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
Any of the historical atlases by John Haywood is excellent. They combine readable text with great illustrative maps. The combination makes history easier to understand and remember. This atlas covers the time of human origins to 500 BC. Those of you familiar with Haywood's Atlas of World History should note that this atlas contains all of the material as the ancient world section of that comprehensive, one-volume atlas plus about fifty percent more. The only problem is that all of Haywood's atlases seem to be out of print.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another fine volume from Haywood
This is another fine history book and atlas by Dr. Haywood, whose historical atlases are some of the best out there for readability, ease of use, and price. I have his Atlas of World History, and it's excellent as well. This one seems to be a little less technical than that one, but both are very readable and not dry like your typical historical atlas. I practically collect these things and have 7 or 8 of the major ones, and as I said, Haywood's are often the most readable and often the best value in terms of price.

Haywood has his usual nice touch with the material and he pays more attention to skillfully integrating graphics and illustrations with the text. In fact, his Atlas of World History used a team of graphics experts which worked specifically on that aspect of the book, and it shows compared to the other atlases on the market. I assume the nice layout and design on this book means the same approach was used here. The only other major historical atlas that competes with Haywood's in terms of visual design is the big Dorling-Kindersley one, which, although great, is four or five times the price of this one.

This book contains two-page spreads covering the historical periods from prehistoric times up to 500 B.C. The maps are well done and not too busy like the ones in some atlases, where they're so dense with symbols and other junk that you can hardly read the map. This book and the Atlas of World History overlap somewhat as this volume contains all of the material on the ancient world in that volume, but since it's specifically devoted to the ancient world, there is quite a bit more additional material as well. Overall, another fine history offering from Prof. Haywood.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, readable reference
I have started reading a lot of historical fiction and nonfiction, and have found Haywood's Altas to be very useful. It works well as an introduction, being quite readable and succinct. In addition, it is an excellent reference to use when reading nonfiction tombs that presume we all know where all the Hittites came from, or how the Illyrians migrated to Italy.Just easily finding Zhou, or Thrace on a map has been a big help for me.A good atlas, well worth the reasonably price. ...
