Product Description
A top pediatrician supplies nutrition advice for parents of children between infancy and preschool, and also discusses how to resolve the most common eating problems children develop.

Children's eating habits change often between infancy and preschool. Dr. Paula's Good Nutrition Guide for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers provides nutrition guidelines for young children and gives parents confidence in this confusing and important area.

Pediatrician Paula Elbirt discusses nutrition by age group. Breastfeeding, formula, solids, allergy issues, gas, and burping are issues for infants. Topics for toddlers include creating a healthful diet, snacks, whole versus skim milk, tantrums and food, and eating styles. Food issues change again for preschoolers, and include friends' influence on eating habits, what to do when a child is cranky from hunger, and much more. Sample recipes and menus are provided for each group.

Dr. Elbirt describes important differences between emerging eating disorders and odd but harmless food preferences kids embrace briefly and then discard. Whether they have "fussy eaters" or are looking for better ways to provide their children with the best nutrition, Dr. Paula's Good Nutrition Guide for Babies, Toddlers, and Preschoolers has the information parents need. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Titled
This book is more about methods for feeding your children and the behaviors you may see as they grow up than it is about actual nutrition. She does discuss how many total calories your child should get in a day, but not any other nutrients. There are no recipes in this book. She does provide some examples of what an appropriate serving size is for each age group, but only for a very few specific foods and there is no guidance as to how to adapt what you read on a food label (usually for a 2000 cal. adult diet) to what your child actually needs in their diet.If you are dealing with picky eaters or worried about your child's attitudes & behaviors related to food, this book might help you.If you want more ideas of healthy foods to feed your kids and a way to verify that they're getting the NUTRITION that they need, you will be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
Even though I had worked with a nutritionist and pediatrician for a year in trying to help my now 32 month old child to gain more weight, I still learned a lot from reading this book. It was reassuring to read the food diaries and then Dr. Paula's responses, because it discussed in detail how and what children really eat.As someone who has had to write a toddler's food diary, I can tell you that it's hard to really know how much your child is actually eating (nibble of this and bite of that), compare that to how much they are supposed to be eating according to guidelines(ounces, 1/2 cups, etc.), and come up with a clear picture. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who wanted to get some detailed information on young children's nutrition. ... Read more

Product Description

The American Academy of Pediatrics currently recommends that: "Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first year of life and beyond for as long as mutually desired by mother and child."
- La Leche League International

There are many benefits to breastfeeding, which range from protecting the baby from illness through antibodies to providing comfort and security. There are also a myriad of benefits for the mother, which include everything from the special bonding that takes place to reduced rates of breast and ovarian cancer.

Despite a mother's best intentions, breastfeeding can prove to be challenging for both new and experienced mothers. And because many hospitals have reduced or eliminated programs on lactation, many mothers are often left relying on the advice of friends, family or a much too busy obstetrician or pediatrician. In a friendly, informative and easy-to-read manner, Better Breastfeeding addresses the concerns, problems and issues breastfeeding mothers face and answers the most commonly asked questions.

Some of the issues that are addressed include:

  • Knowing if the baby is getting enough milk
  • Plugged ducts and breast infection
  • Nursing strike, thrush, and twins or multiples
  • Challenges of latching
  • Sore nipples and engorgement
  • Going back to work.

The authors also provide 125 recipes for the breastfeeding mother that serve her unique needs and, ultimately, those of her baby. There is also some research which indicates that a child's taste preferences are influenced by what a mother eats during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Since the flavor of breast milk changes according to the mother's diet, it influences the types of foods the baby is willing to accept and enjoy during weaning to solid foods.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Study in Nutrition
I picked this book up at Borders Books earlier this week and I'm really enjoying it.It's a great study in nutrition. There are enough books and weight loss programs out there. This is a great education in what and why you should eat what you eat.She teaches you what you should eat so you can avoid all the unnecessary pills and lose (before) and gain appropriately (during).I'm not much of a reader, but I've enjoyed this.I'm looking to create a healthy diet and lose weight before I get pregnant. And this has been a nice resource. There are some nice menu plans, and recipies and links to websites to help you determine if you're on target.

3-0 out of 5 stars ok
This book was alright, but not exactly what I was expecting.I thought that it would be a little more about meal planning and supplements instead of pages and pages of lists with different vitamins, etc. and the amount needed ( in mg. or g. etc).I did learn some from it but not sure if it was worth the time or money. It was very drawn out and boring so it took me a while to finish. ... Product Description
Finally, an excellent eBook that is brimming with common sense and usable material. This eBook speaks in clear laymen terms you will be able to understand to get what you need in order to have a healthy pregnancy and ultimately a healthy baby.

There is no time in your child’s life that nutrition is going to be as important as it is right now, before it has even drawn its first breath.

Proper nutrition and good health are a vital part of having a healthy pregnancy, preventing many major birth defects and decreasing your chance of delivering a premature or low birth weight baby.

Since your baby is obviously incapable of eating by itself at this point in time, they are going to get all of the nutrients they need to grow and develop properly from the foods that you eat.

That means you have to make sure you’re eating enough for both of you-and not just in empty calories either!

For the next nine months the nutrients that you take in are going to have to sustain both your health and that of your baby, so it’s essential that you make sure you’re getting enough of the necessary vitamins and minerals for both of you.

Your Prenatal Vitamins Aren’t Enough!

Many women read the section above and think, ‘I’m taking my prenatal vitamins like my physician told me, and I’m trying to eat healthy. Do I still have to worry about my nutrition?’

The answer to that is ABSOLUTELY.

But, there is a reason that prenatal vitamins are called nutritional supplements.

On their own they’re not sufficient to ensure that your baby grows and develops properly. That’s why it’s vital that you understand what you need to do during your pregnancy to keep both you and baby healthy.

This book is written with the expertise of a medical expert and from the viewpoint of the average, everyday, ordinary, "going to be the one actually getting up in the middle of the night to change the baby's diaper while the obstetrician sleeps peacefully mom".

It's the book on pregnancy nutrition you'll actually understand, explained in stages to make it easy for you to give your baby the best chance at being born healthy and happy.

In Pregnancy Diet Plan: Pregnancy Nutrition for a Healthy Baby you will learn how to:

1) Break down what you eat in a day.

There are many diets that are “guaranteed” to help you have a healthy pregnancy. I’ll teach you how to identify the nutrients you need, allowing you to eat the foods that you want while at the same time eating what’s best for your baby.

2) Distinguish between Trimesters

I’ll take you through the various changes you can make to your diet each trimester that will have a major impact on your baby’s development.

Here is what you will learn inside this guide....

* The various stages of fetal development
* How nutrition affects how your baby grows
* The role that nutrition plays in determining whether or not your child has a birth defect
* How to have a healthy baby without giving up your favorite foods
* What to do when you can't follow a regular pregnancy “diet”
* How to lose those pregnancy pounds afterward quickly and painlessly, even if you’re nursing
* And a lot more!

So, why wait?Get your copy of “Pregnancy Diet Plan: Pregnancy Nutrition for a Healthy Baby” today and insure your baby and you grow up healthy and strong.

3-0 out of 5 stars A very introductory set
I agree that Before Your Pregnancy can be helpful, if any experience with nutrition or a healthy lifestyle is limited. It covers the basics, but doesn't help too much with specifics. But the fact that it puts the responsiblity of parenting, before and during pregnancy, in the hands of mother and father is perhaps the best introduction it can provide.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it was intended to be
This package set is very good for what it was intended to be: a very general nutrition and exercise information resource. HOWEVER, if you have a basic knowledge of the food pyramid, exercise, and pregnancy hazards (alcohol, tobacco, caffiene) I would not recommend spending the money. The book is not more in-depth than the video, only six reciepts are included, and only a handful of exercises are available. This package is very limiting in scope. My advice: try your local library first before you buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I've been looking for!
I thoroughly enjoyed this resource.Perhaps it was because I was reallysearching for someone/something who would compassionately discuss what myhusband and I could do to prepare for conceiving our first child.Thisvideo and booklet kit had that personal feel.I also liked being able toconnect a face with the person who wrote it (and she was pregnant in thevideo--a good sign!).Some of what I know I should be doing with nutritionand fitness was reinforced, but other information was new and specific tomy needs.I also like the way my hips, legs, and stomach feel after havingdone the mini workout at the end of the video three times this week.

5-0 out of 5 stars preparation is the key to success!
Before Your Pregnancy was a delight to watch and very informative. I felt like real people, just like myself, were talking to me and what they were saying made sense. This video and instructive booklet made eating right andgetting in shape, before I was trying to get pregnant, something I could doand do well. What a great feeling it left me with to know my husband and Icould do something to make the healthiest baby even before I was pregnant.I have given this video/booklet as gifts to a number of friends who arestarting to think about getting pregnant and they loved it too! Thanks AmyOgle for making it look easy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for all women preparing for pregnancy!
As an exercise physiologist, I highly suggest that any of my clients preparing for pregnancy read Before your Pregnancy. It provides sound exercise and nutritional guidelines in a straightforward and easy to followmanner.Thank you, Amy, for presenting this very important information insuch a simple, doable way. ... That’s not to say that you shouldn’t take prenatal vitamins. They will go a long way toward helping to compensate for the necessary nutrients that are all but impossible to get through your food in a day.
