Product Description
There is no longer any doubt that the inherited genetic constitution of the individual has a large influence on the entire life cycle, from human fetal development and pre- and postnatal growth to subsequent health status. However, growing evidence suggests that this predisposition is not rigid, but that early genetic imprinting, caused by exposure to a diverse spectrum of nutrients, macromolecules, microbial agents and other cellular or soluble components present in the external environment, is also of importance. According to this concept of the developmental origins of adult diseases, intrauterine and early life events play an important role in the etiology of human diseases: there seems to exist a critical >window of opportunity' in the human infant before and during pregnancy, and up to 24 months of age. Altered exposure to different environmental agents during this critical period may determine the nature of responses in the perinatal period, and the expression of specific disease states in later life. The papers presented in this publication thus focus on the impact of perinatal growth, nutrition, environmental microflora, and host immune responses on the outcome of health and disease in later life. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars you don't have to be pregnant to love it
I took this book out of the library when my oldest daughter was pregnant 12 years ago and when she was pregnant three years later I bought my own copy. Long after anyone in the family is expecting I use it because of the good health advice and delicious recipes. Our absolute favorite is the Irish Soda Bread with dried fruit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for all phases of your life!
I purchased this book in December of 2005 and am still religiously using it at least once a week.I do agree with another woman that left the comment that the recipes take much longer to make than the estimated times given in the book and that the recipes make much more than the recommended serving size. All in all though this is by far my favorite cook book - I know that we are eating healthy and that we are eating a variety of food groups.I also like expanding my cooking knowledge and using the ingredients that are uncommon!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Addition to My Cookbook Shelf - Husband Happy Too!
THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK is a good book, but not a great cookbook. It consists of two main sections, the first on nutrition and the second on recipes, plus appendices that list which recipes are particularly rich in each of four key nutrients (iron, folic acid, fiber and calcium). The Nutrition section contains good, readable information on nutrition. Even if you already have a good command of nutritional basics, as I did, this is good material.

The Recipes section is what I bought THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK for, and what I give mixed reviews to. On the plus side, there are some very good, very nutritious recipes in here, including a number of dishes my husband gives an enthusiastic thumbs-up to. Issues I have with the recipes:
- Some of these recipes took me 1 1/2 - 2 hours to prepare, at least the first time. The time estimate given was nowhere close to that.
- The author's short time estimates for prep time either assume that you already have everything peeled and chopped/sliced or that you prep foods much faster than I do. Perhaps they are based on your having a food processor?
- Many recipes contain ingredients that I cannot easily find in a mainstream grocery store.
- Uncommon ingredients are not always glossed with an explanation, and no substitution is offered. For example, a recipe using pappardelle looked appealing. I had a vague idea that pappardelle was a type of pasta. Googling it confirmed that for me, and also let me know that fettuccine is a workable substitute. Checking at my grocery store, I found that indeed we do not have pappardelle, and I will be trying that recipe with fettuccine.
- Not all recipes are as well written a set of instructions as they could be. For example, starting the water for pasta was listed as step 7 of 8 on one recipe I tried last week. Fortunately, I preread the recipe and realized that needed to be step 1. Another recipe had me scrambling when it told me to do something with "the vegetables," except that it turned out that "the vegetables" did not include the red peppers, which were being reserved for another step.
- Serving sizes seem to be overly generous. Recipes described as providing "four main course servings" offer more like six at my house. I don't mind this a lot, but I have learned to plan for lots of leftovers when using these recipes.
- Sections could have been more clearly labeled visually. Finding the first trimester recipes was easy enough, but the only way to find the low calorie first trimester recipes is to find the end of the section and then flip forwards to look for the page that states that the low cal recipes start there.
- The introduction says that this revised version contains simpler recipes. For me, many of these still seem fairly complex. I use this for a couple of special dishes a week, rather than a source of everyday help. At my house, the pregnant woman is also the cook, so simpler is more of interest to me!

There are some recipes in here that I think are very, very good. If you get THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK, I recommend trying: potatoes stuffed with spinach and broccoli (p. 195); spaghetti with turkey sausage, red bell peppers, onions and tomatoes (p. 207; my husband loves this); chilled sesame noodles with vegetables (p. 241, another winner with my husband, though we like a less sweet sauce); rigatoni with wild mushroom ragu (p. 244); chicken, broccoli and mushroom stroganoff (p. 247); turkey sausage with white beans, tomatoes and basil (p. 278; we didn't find lean turkey Italian sausage so we use lean turkey sausage and throw in some Italian spices).

As you may be able to guess from that list of recipes, my other comment would be that THE PREGNANCY COOKBOOK has a definite Italian-American slant. There is nothing wrong with that, but you do want to know!

3-0 out of 5 stars No All Foods Safe--but everything looks delish
I looked through this book and while it has some very tasty looking recipies in it, they are no all safe. The goat cheese thing another reviewer brought up is debatable (if it is pasturised or used cooked it should be fine), as is the wine (alcohol does boil off), but the big fish (swordsfish, fresh tuna--or for that matter regular canned tuna more than once a week) that are featured in a number of these recipies are no nos for sure for pregnant women.Mercury poisoning is a VERY serious thing especially in the first trimester, and the big fish are full of it.

That said, if you buy it as an educated pregnant person who knew what to avoid, it looks like it would be great!

2-0 out of 5 stars Be sure to read the warnings
This book is schizophrenic! She (the doctor) wrote the first half, a solid nutritional guide for pregnant women. He (the cook) wrote the recipes -- many of which include wine and goat cheese, items she tells you to avoid! Page 51 warns against feta and goat cheese -- so why do they appear in the recipes at all? And page 52 tells you to be sure to simmer red wine before cooking with it, to remove alcohol, but that warning doesn't show up in the recipes themselves. There are tasty recipes in here that are simple to make, including some good vegetarian ones (spinach fettucine with wild mushroom sauce; penne with swiss chard and pine nuts). But I hope no pregnant women skip the dietary warnings in the beginning, or rely on this book as their sole source of information. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Falls Way Short in the Recipes Department
I thought this book was going to help me out in trying not to over gain as I did in my first two pregnancies. The information was good but then I tried to make one of the recipes. It has ingredients listed but doesn't tell you where to add them.As far as I have seen it doesn't list a cooking temperature once in the whole book.I was able to make the macaroni & cheese but I had to guess at what to bake it at and when to add certain ingredients. This book was really a disappointment to me.Do not buy it, you'll just waist your money!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This is my third pregnancy and I don't want to gain as much weight as I have in my two previous pregnancies.I was disappointed by The Pregnancy Diet because it failed to tell me how to control my weight and cravings.I was looking for more information on eating healty filling foods, not cutting back on my meals.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Preemie Twins Are Healthy Thanks to this "Diet"
I was pregnant with twins and really worried about eating well (and going into premature labor). After consulting with my OB I learned I don't have to eat alot more than with a singleton.I then purchased "The Pregnancy Diet".I ate 1-2 of the "Wholesome Whole-Grain Muffins" a day;these were easy to make. The "Chix Baked w/Lemon and Vegetarian Meatloaf" were my favorites too.I ended up going into premature labor. My twins were born at 29 weeks. They were excellent weights despite this. The neonatologist said I fed them well and the nurse said they were the biggest "29 weekers" she has ever seen. They are now 5, robust and healthy.People can't believe how early they were born.I recommend this book for everyone - if it can help me feed 2 babies very well, it can help you too!

2-0 out of 5 stars Same old, same old
There is no information in this book that I haven't read or been told before. This morning I tried to make one of the recipes from the book, the "Wholesome Whole-Grain Muffins" and they were a disaster.Behan instructs that this recipe makes 18 muffins, but I used 18 muffin cups and the batter overflowed and made my kitchen smell terrible (not great when a pregnant woman is feeling nauseous anyway) and they are burnt on the edges and not quite cooked in the middles. This is coming from someone who loves to bake and has a little experience behind making muffins. The batter was very watery and the small taste I took (what I could stand after smelling burnt batter all morning) was very, very sweet.I would not recommend purchasing this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Really didn't impress me
Quite frankly, the book didn't help me much at all ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a terrible book
Poorly written and horribly, horribly edited. That aside, it is an easy read. But her message is so convoluted. There is no logical progression of thought or information and she often contradicts herself from one chapter to the next.75% of the book is filled with diet mentality "tricks" and "Don't" and "No's" and "Control" and "Discipline", then the rest of the book claims there are no "bad" foods, diets are bad and we all just need to get in touch with our natural hunger, and feed it.

I would highly recommend "Outsmarting the female fat cell" by Debra Waterhouse. Not only is the message clear, logical and healthy but she explains the physiology behind it.She lays out a reasonable program. And, it's about $15 cheaper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best darn advice
Finally a book that speaks my language! It has information and advice that's easy to understand. Info that I can put to use right away. Read a chapter every day or two and you'll see that learning to eat better does not require something that resembles a college text book with boring data charts and scientific language. This book explains what you can do right away, right now, as soon as you have the book. As soon as you apply what's in the book, it goes beyond the book as you take action and make changes to get healthier. ... Read more

    Product Description
Everyone wants their children to have the best possible diet, particularly in those all-important first years of life. But parents (especially new parents) aren't nutritional experts. So how do they know if their babies and toddlers are getting all the nourishment they need?

Now, with "Better Baby Food," there's a complete, authoritative guide that takes the guesswork out feeding young children -- from birth to 24 months and beyond.

Developed with the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children, this book provides the most up-to-date, expert advice available, with easy-to-read information about every aspect of feeding young children -- from breast and bottle feeding through to the introduction of solid foods. Each page is packed with tips, recommendations and common-sense guidelines for parents, including important topics such as food safety and allergies, teething and tooth care, digestive problems, essential vitamins and minerals, snacking, homemade vs. commercially prepared foods, feeding while traveling, as well as vegetarian diets.

But that's not all. In addition to its wealth of nutritional information, this book features over 220 easy-to-prepare recipes, organized by meal and recommended age range. Each recipe provides a full nutrient analysis, and has been baby- and toddler-tested to ensure maximum flavor appeal. Start the day with "Baby's Fruit Smoothie" or "Apple Breakfast Bars." At midday try dishes such as "Lunchtime Pasta and Bean Casserole" or "Crustless Cheese 'n Carrot Quiche" and, for dinner, "Fiesta Tomato Surprise" or "Chicken and Peach Salad." These recipes are so imaginative and delicious, you'll want to make them for your own dinner table!

New parents need this book -- they need anything that will make their sleep-deprived lives easier -- but experienced parents can also benefit. This book was developed in association with the world-renowned Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. THE HOSPITAL FOR SICK CHILDREN is acknowledged as one of the foremost children's hospitals in the world, and has been providing leading-edge care for infants and toddlers since 1875. In the 1930s, when malnutrition was common among Depression-era children, the hospital's Dr. Frederick Tisdall developed Pablum, which is now sold by Heinz as "The Original Infant Cereal." Today, with an international reputation for treatment and research programs in all areas of children's health, the hospital treats some 340,000 patients each year. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Could Be Better.
I was looking for a book that fully encompassed all the stages of feeding for my son. This book only focused on the older eaters and offered little or no advice on the beginning eater. The recipes were also seemingly unhealthy! I was quite surprised at the amount of sugar in some of the recipes. It did offer quite a bit of useful general information on formulas, breast feeding, and when to start feeding your child what. Maybe the newer edition of this book is better, but my disappointment with this edition would have me look elsewhere for a "better baby food book."

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy recipes for toddlers!Yes, healthy.
As another reviewer has written, this book focuses primarily on food for toddlers. It does have an excellent (though brief) section on beginning foods for infants, as well as information about breastfeeding and formula, and other such informational writing. However, the heart and soul of this book are the recipes for foods that both you (the parent) and your toddler and other children will enjoy eating.Yes, food for the whole family to eat together, that tastes great.

Let me directly address the concerns of other reviewers here. Many have rated this book poorly because the recipes are "unhealthy."But what is healthy for adults is very different than what is healthy for toddlers.Toddlers need the vitamins and nutrients in good nutritious foods. They also need to learn to enjoy food, and develop a good relationship with their meals. They also may need (depending on the toddler) to get a lot of calories... they're both growing quickly and developing their infamously "picky" habits at the same time.

Given those very real criteria, these recipes are the MOST HEALTHY recipes I've encountered for toddlers. The baked beans recipe one previous reviewer mentioned (disparagingly) is a perfect example: it gets toddlers to eat beans (a very nutritious, protein-backed, vitamin-full food) and fills them up with many calories in only a few bites (the usual toddler portion), and is absolutely delicious with the flavors of molasses and bacon, so your toddler will learn to ENJOY eating beans, not see them as a chore.Other highlights of that nature include some surprisingly delicious buttery, carrot-packed, whole-wheat sugar cookies, and basic meatballs (much better than those weird "meat sticks" in a jar).

For the whole picture on feeding your baby, I recommend Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense as my bible, and the best, most complete feeding book out there. But the one thing it's missing are recipes, ideas for nutritious, tasty, toddler-appealing foods that families can eat together at the table."Better Baby Food" has those in spades, and I turn to it again and again in the kitchen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Recipes not too healthy
I borrowed this book from my local public library, and I am glad that I did not purchase it. I found the recipes to be fairly unhealthy, such as added sugar in items where there was already fruit included. I agree with another reader, I could leave those items out- but I imagine that there are parents out there who do not KNOW that they should omit them and it seems unwise to recommend the extra sugar and salt. One recipe even suggested using processed cheese product!
As to the reviewer that mentioned that she could not imagine a baby who likes onions and garlic...well, I have one of those! I was very surprised when my one-year-old started to dislike the more bland food I was making especially for her, and enjoyed her food more when I started adding more flavor, such as onions and garlic.
I was surprised that some of the reviewers mentioned that they would have had no idea what to feed their kids after breast-milk. It's sad that pediatricians are not helping their patients' families with that at regular check-ups.

5-0 out of 5 stars INDISPENSIBLE!
Having a mother who is an RN, and yet not wanting to be a health-crazed maniac, I struggled with the idea of Gerber/prepacked baby foods versus doing it myself in our own kitchen. My mother recommended "Better Baby Food", as it was used by her hospital's cookstaff for pediatric menus. What an indispensible guide it proved to be and the continuation book "Better Food for Kids" is every bit as wonderful! The recipes produce foods that are easy (if you are tired or juggling multiple children or a full time career) and really great in regard to: variety of taste, color and texture and our whole family enjoys many of the meals in the later sections and the earlier stage recipes make for great side items to meals! Great tips on feeding picky eaters and special dietary concerns for both the healthy and the ill/child with mallady. If you are like me and considering making your own baby food there are great tips like usuing a handblender/food processer/hand chopper to puree or small chunk soft or cooked foods (making sure to add the water left from cooking process to add back in extra nutrients)--then spoon into ice cube trays and freeze--later plop these into little sandwich baggies or tupperware in freezer for quickie meals--we would take an ice blob of peas and another of golden delicious apples and ask for a mug of hot water at a restaurant to thaw it out and warm it, our daughter loved it...and it really was easy...and really did save MONEY! There actually is just 1 chapter devoted to each stage of age and eating, but index in back refers reader to many referenced items that cross apply throughout each stage (i.e. allergies). As for the other review's notation about questioning recipies with butter, sugar, etc...a little, in moderation is what all doctor's or anyone of authority in the medical or nutrional world recommend, unless allergic or there's a known health consideration. My advice, if you are truly concerned about things like sugar, substitute apple juice or apple sauce, which if that is a health/diet concern you would probably already known anyway! Great book---I pair this with the "Better Food for Kids" as a continuation and another little item for all baby showers I attend and so far no complaints, lots of thanks later on actually!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm doing better without this book!
I got this book from the library to get fresh ideas on what to feed my 8 month old son. I'm very happy that I didn't buy it. While the title suggests that there are recipes for babies, the majority is really for toddlers. With a few exceptions, the only suggestions for children under 12 months are plain veggie, fruit and meat purees, and even those are mainstream (i.e. the purees you can buy in jars). I found much more interesting combinations in a German cookbook (parsnip with potato and pork, polenta with broccoli, and how does fennel with banana sound?). One of the "exceptions" is a barley vegetable soup that contains dried legumes. In other books, I read that legumes are not suitable at that age because they can make the baby gassy, and I don't want to risk that.

While reading the first part, I liked the fact that the authors say that using canned goods from time to time is ok, but I was not so pleased to see they used LOTS of canned foods (including canned soup that is usually very high sodium). "Baby's first birthday cake" has a whopping 540 calories per slice including the icing, and contains 4 cups of sugar for 12 slices.

Some of the recipes do sound interesting, but the overall quality is rather questionable. ... Read more

    Product Description
Maternal nutritional status affects the offsprings health development significantly during early embryogenesis, pregnancy, birth and lactation, and subsequently determines health during growth and even throughout adulthood. On the other end of the human lifetime scale, the importance of maternal nutrition expands into the time period before conception: Pre-conception nutritional status not only influences fertility, but also embryogenesis and life-long health. Predisposition for coronary heart diseases, Type-2 diabetes mellitus, and hypertension can be caused by intrauterine adaptations to fetal malnutrition. Hence, optimizing nutrition for women during their reproductive period can be expected to have a great impact on the well being of the next generation. This workshop dealt with the effects of maternal nutrition on fetal growth, metabolic programming, energy and nutrient requirements, as well as under- and over-nutrition during pregnancy. Finally, it addressed the question of whe ... Read more
