5-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Logbook
Use this great logbook to record your workouts and learn how you can improve. This book is especially helpful for those using the Power Factor Training program.

3-0 out of 5 stars Power Factor Training Logbook
This book came in very helpful, I had to alter some of it to personalize my work-outs, but it worked out for me. Great book and information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Useful
Please see my review of Power Factor Training (the book).I pointed out the power factor training program did not work for me.

This log is made to assist a person on the power factor program. It has the workout routines ( A and B) plus a host of specialized programs. In addition it has charts you can fill out to mark your progress. It also has an overview of power factor training that is nearly as informative as the books you can buy on the subject. From the point of view of inclusiveness the manual succeeds; however, from the point of view of usefullness it fails.

The manual has blocks that are too small to write in, and the charts are very small. The book needs to by 81/2 by 11 to write in well, or at least much larger than it is now.Sections could also be added for warm up, stretching and cool down as the authors recommend these need to be included in every workout routine.

My largest complaint is in the amount of pages devoted to the normal power factor program. After all the other material is considered the area for the normal power factor training routines A and B comprise about 1/3 of the book.Maybe less. The specialization routines take up a lot more of the book. Why include the specialized routines in this manual?

Thus the manual does not have enough space to write in easily, does not have enough pages for the normal power factor workouts, includes too many pages for the specialized routines, and does not include fundimental information in the pages used for the workouts.

All in all a substandard effort.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for the "P/F" Logbook
I really enjoy using the Power Factor Logbook! It is an excellentcompanion to the P/F book series. I enjoy the workout to workout feedbackthat I receive. In just a few workouts I knew what my optimal reptitionrange was for each of my body parts. I quickly learned that just attemptingheavier weights did not always equal an optimal Power index. Sometimeslowering the weight and really banging out the reps was the key.Thankyou to Mr. Little and Sisco. Keep showing us "sane" ways to trainin this "Insane" world!

1-0 out of 5 stars Logbook???
I have enjoyed reading the authors book, Power Factor Training and alsotheir other three books specializing for specific bodyparts using the Powerfactor training method. However, this log book is a complete waste of time. The information about why the power index and other things is repeated inthe beginning and the charts are organized in a haphazard way which makesme completely useless unless you are someone who hates to make your ownchart and print it out for use, this book could be useful although it mightnot pack along well in a gym bag. Who can write in those small chartsanyway, the print would have to be so small. The authors need to come outwith something more useful than just a log book. Something which advancesthe Power Factor training routines and not just repeated information inevery other book. Plus it would be beneficial if they would start updatingtheir website! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Athletes/anyone serious about functional muscles START HERE!
I can honestly say, having read over 20 books and untold magazine articles on strength training, bodybuilding, and lifting in general...START HERE. This is the first book. What is unique about Dr. Colgan's book, is he is helping define the protocols for USEFUL, ATHLETIC muscle and range of motion. If you are a BODYBUILDER, this book may be of limited value to you. If you are an athlete or someone serious about improving your health and well being through range of motion, proper excercises, and improving your strength and power, then you have to have this book. It is clear, easy to read, and concise.

I have improved my strength, power, health...AND...tendonitis, chronic injuries (knee and shoulder surgery artifacts) through the techniques described here. Don't shortcut. Start at the beginning (I didn't, and paid the price, but now I'm cured because I started over and my shoulder, knee, and tennis elbow haven't felt better in years).

His routines are smart. Range of motion is emphasized, including intelligent stretching and exercises, rather than body-builder's limited range of motion exercises. They progress correctly, day to day, week to week and month to month. They allow for lots of rest and won't even come close to burning you out. Sometimes you will leave the gym wondering if you really did enough (you did!). They are relatively short, focused/concentrated, and enjoyable gym sessions, and you will see results. I body-built when I was a kid. 25 years later, this routine is far more satisfying in strength and power results. I am pretty sure I will never stop completely my attention to keeping a reasonably powerful and athletic body, whatever my age.

Downsides to the stuff in this book...believe me I really have tried and I simply can't find any. I'm a bit annoyed there isn't a sequel or something more for me to read on this subject. I've tried buying many other books, and have yet to find one that even reasonably measures up to the comprehensive, well thought out, and detailed protocols in this book. It really is as good as a one-stop source to get you well along the road.

I wish I could have been more brief in this review, but my final point about this book is that if you follow the program he sets forth, it is easy to do, enjoyable, you will see plenty of results within 6 weeks (especially you folks who aren't as strong as you used to be...you will get most of it back really fast), and the most exciting thing for me is that by starting where he says, you really can improve your joint and connective tissue health. My shoulder, knees, and elbow are so much healthier and pain-free (not to mention STRONGER!) than they've ever been, I just can't say enough about this book and these protocols.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good fitness book
This book got me on the right track to reaching alot of my goals. Offers a wide range of info and makes an excellent fitness guide. The cons are that this was written almost 10 years and things always change with advancements and research. The author leans on the conservative side for avoiding injuries bashing many stretches that are commonly used; the same with commonly used lifts like the upright row and good mornings. i see his point but it is debateable. He touches briefly on plyometrics but doesn't give enough info and the same with nutrition. However the info in this book is very good very valuable worth reading but take some of his opinions like the stretches I mentioned with a grain of salt. Very opinionated author but knows his stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY Workout Book You Need: More Truth in This Program than in a $700 Personal Training License!
Dr. Colgan has assembled a complete guide to unleashing one's physical power through posture, weight training, and nutrition. Dr. Colgan focuses on exercises that strengthen the actual core (obliques, rotator cuffs, etc.) for functional muscle that looks, feels, and works great!

This training is different from the typical magazine workouts that create only superficial results that are not sustainable or functional. The practices of periodization, kinetic chains, and essential eccentrics are vital to anyone who wants to a fitter, stronger, and better body. This book is a MUST for anyone interested in health.

Throw away your magazine subscriptions. Toss away the other books. Turn off your computer.

This program, along with my upcoming health package and Dr. Molter's Protection in Movement practices, are all you need.

The human body doesn't evolve every month, even though all the "breakthroughs" and "secrets" of the fad fitness companies want you to believe it so they can keep making money off your ignorance.

You won't ever look like the professional bodybuilders unless you have incredible genetics and steroids. Look. Would you drive a Honda Civic as if it was a Nascar race car? No.

Yet, so many people follow the workout routines of professional bodybuilders, even though they lack the genetics, steroids, and resources necessary to get the right results.

Check out Andrew Chang + Bodybuilding to see my pictures. You can achieve those results all naturally, with any genetics, in just 3 hours a week. That's doable.

Learn the Truth. Test for Results. Work Out.

5-0 out of 5 stars An appreciated gift for my husband
I bought this book for my husband, a big Dr. Colgan fan! He's very excited about the information it contains and has already incorporated some of his knew found education to work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good technique
I enjoy Michael Colgans books. This isn't one of his best, but it has some good strength training info. As an endurance athelete I found this book moderately useful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of good tips on correct form!
I think the strongest aspect of this book are all the excellent explanations of incorrect and unsafe form. Photographic examples are provided with many of the explanations. There is also some nice information regarding all the different types of reps and sets that can be done. The writing is always clear and direct.

However, be aware that many of these techniques require a trusted spotter. That is a limitation for me since I tend to do the bulk of my training solo. Overall this book is worth a look if you are struggling with your form.

3-0 out of 5 stars No index
Decent book on lifting. What I don't like is, it has a lot of information, and yet, no index. For instance, I wanted to look up recovery periods between lifts. Where do I find that ? I would have to page through the entire book. The table of contents doesn't tell me where it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good overall but do not completely agree with it
The training methods offered in this book are safe, correct and extremely effective. I have been weight training for 5 years and have used most of the training methods and style offered in this book recently for about 8 months and have seen excellent results in terms of muscle gain. I have to say Steve takes a straight-forward, honest and non-biased approach in his instructions given and i have high respect for him. Having used his style of training i no more experience wrist and shoulder pain during training and also avoided many injuries.

However, i have to say that the training in this book is not easy to understand and the pictures posted can sometimes seem confusing especially for novice lifters. Also, i don't totally agree with the ways that some of the exercises are performed. For example he tells you to do the "Monkey Shoulder Shrug" by lifting your forearms and bending at your elbows. But that seems to divert the muscle contraction away from your shoulder and upper back. Also, he tells you to do the side lateral raise with your elbows bend at 90 degree. Well that certainly takes some pressure and stress away from the shoulders but that will in return put a lot of pressure on your forearm and wrist. So you can only preform it that way light weight. He also doesn't mention that you can do the same with your elbow slightly bent if you have strongershoulders and that you can vary it by doing the one-arm lateral raise.

Lastly he mention that you can rest as long as you are able to exert your maximal force again between sets. Well that seems to be beneficial for absolute strength gain but in terms of muscle growth that doesn't prove helpful. I have tried resting bewteen sets using this approach for 2 months and i see only minimal growth in my muscles. But after reverting to the 1 to 2 minutes resting interval i have seen much more noticeable gains.

Well apart from the above i will say this is a very good book on training and i will recommend it. But do remember this is a TRAINING BOOK ONLY and if you want to know about supplement and nutrition then you gotta go somewhere else. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars kettlebell training book
well written, easy to follow - A1 knowledge on kettlebells and how to use them...
i highly recommend this book!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst than nothing
Please -- if you're curious about kettlebell training, get almost any other book. All this book has for you is bodybuilding exercises substituting kettlebells for dumbbells. These authors have no kettlebell certifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent to the point reference
I really like this book because it is a mere 128 pages or so and it is very to the point in style. The exercise explanations and photos are clear and concise. There is very little wasted text in this book and it reads very quickly so you can spend more time exercising! Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kettlebell
I love my new kettlebell, but it took over a month to get it.Muscledriver didn't send it out.My credit card was billed, but the information to send it didn't get to their shipping department.I finally called and after a half hour wait they figured it out. When I ordered their computer was down causing the problem. The employee on the phone was nice, but didn't offer a discount on the kettlebell or future purchases.I might order from Muscledriver again because I love the product, but I'd remind them of losing my first order.

3-0 out of 5 stars A brief comment
First I should say I'm a novice kettlebell user and just bought this book to get an introduction to the subject and get going with a few basic exercises. The cheap price was a consideration in my purchase, and since you usually get what you pay for these days, I wasn't expecting the bible here. I noticed from reading the reviews that there's all this concern about beginners trying to get started with this book since it doesn't discuss some of the things a novice should know, but come on, I have some common sense, and I know not to swing a 30-kg kettlebell between my legs, over my head, or try to balance one with one hand while doing a one-handed hand stand, or something else wacky like that, until I'm more skilled and know what I'm doing. So far all I'm doing is a few basic exercises and one or two of the momentum ones to supplement my workouts with standard weights and dumbbells. The book was sufficient for that. I've noticed how the off-center weight distribution of kettlebells makes them awkward and puts stress on muscles and joints in a way that other weights don't, but I'm starting out with lower weights until I'm more skilled. I'm a long time martial artist and instructor who basically wanted to see what all the hoopla was about and satisfy his curiosity. If I find kettlebells truly advantageous I'll add them to my repertory but for now this was a cheap way to segue into a new method and get boot-strapped. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Olympic style weightlifting
This is a great book for introducing athletes, coaches, or anyone interested in learning about the Olympic lifts. Each lift (clean, snatch, jerk) is covered separately and in great detail with photos showing starting positions, technical variations, and proper execution. Several accessory lifts are also covered, with and emphasis on exercises beneficial to this style of training. The use and importance of these lifts in various sports settings and for developing power and strength is also discussed. While learning these lifts is best done under the tutelage of an experienced coach, this book provides a lot of information for people with little or no exposure to this type of training. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot from it. If you are unfamiliar with the Olympic lifts or Olympic style weightlifting, then you will find 'Explosive Lifting for Sports' to be a very valuable text.

Chapters cover: basic training methods and principles of strength training; the importance of strength, power, and explosiveness in sports; the importance of proper technique in weightlifting; detailed instructions on proper execution of various lifts (Olypmic lifts and auxillary lifts); periodization and program design; and example sport-specific training programs.

1-0 out of 5 stars the cd is not working on my comp and also my player
good book but cd is not working, could be only in my case,so don go by my review alone, this author is good

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent learning aid
Although you can't beat a coach or trainer when it comes to certain things such as performing olympic lifting movements, this book is the next best thing. After reading it, you should at least have a strong base for what needs to be done to successfully complete lifts such as the snatch, clean and jerk.Ample illustrations and an accompanying summary break down each movement and really help to visualize proper technique.Exercises instrumental in helping to develop explosive lifting power are explained. There's even two chapters devoted to designing and implementing specific training programs.I would recommend this book and it would even make a worthy supplement to the use of a trainer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Explosive Lifting.....Boring!
Thankfully I found this book at the library and didn't have to pay for it as it would have been a waste of money.I can't think of another book that presents the topic of weightlifting in a more boring format.

The DVD reminded me of a 1940's military training film - you know the type. The droll, non-emotive delivery that will put you to sleep by the first exercise.

The whole premise is flawed. Why "Explosive Lifting for Sports"?If you are going to learn the Oly lifts then these are not SPECIFIC exercises for any sport except lifting!Just learn the lifts and get good at them - focus on speed of movement and form.If you are an athlete then maybe the extra strength will help - maybe not.

If you want to learn the Oly lifts get a decent book that has some life and enthusiam to it's presentation."Weightlifting Encyclopedia" is a good one.But this book here, well, just get it at the library if you really must.

3-0 out of 5 stars a basic primer on the o-lifts
The book is ok, but it seems like it would be a good book for
introduction, or high school students.I couldn't see anyone
learning to do the lifts from this book, its definately not
a how to or substitute for real coaching.the title sounds
like its trying to hook in people but the book is a basic
primer on the o-lifts. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written and poor illustrations
A poorly written book with a limited amount of pictures to correctly illustrate the proper way to use the kettle bell. There are many others books on the market which would better serve the purpose for learning how to do a great kettle bell workout. This book had too much repitition and was not well written. Don't waste your money

5-0 out of 5 stars New to Kettlebells
I'm a weightlifter looking to incorporate something different to change up the routine. This book is the perfect solution for someone looking to learn the proper techinques to get into kettlebell training. I also liked the fact there were different routines illustrated for whatever sport you are training for. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to take their strength training to the next level. Bellomo does a great job using his personal experience in Kettlebell training to set you in the right direction. Enjoyed it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best kettlebell book.
If you are looking for a great book showing you how to use kettlebells for a variety of different sports, this is it. This is the best book of its kind I have ever found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kettlebells made easy
The detailed exercise descriptions and specialized combinations of routines (circuits) take all the guesswork out of making kettlebells an effective part of your training routine. The workouts are designed to combine cardio and strength training into a single session and the order of the exercises in the various circuits maximize the workout to ensure you are getting the most out of the session.I like to create a month of workouts from the book and copy the circuits from the book onto a notepad I can take to the gym, working well.Great book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A biased review
As my title indicates, I may be a bit biased in my review of this book. Here is the reason: I personally had a chance to train with Dave. Try as I may, it is difficult to separate this fact from my review of this book. In December of 2004, I had ACL replacement surgery. I credit Dave with helping me recover as quickly and to the extent that I did. Within 4 months I was ready for golf. Okay, laugh if you will, but golf requires a range of motion, balance and a strength to be able to rotate through the golf swing. Believe me, this was not a simple task on a gimpy knee. Dave helped me gain the strength and stamina I needed to be able to get back the necessary muscle for my golf swing. And he did this in the time frame that I wanted to. And as for skiing, another passion of mine, I was back to skiing the next season. And, with more endurance and strength than before my surgery! Kettlebells, once I was recovered from the impact of the surgery, became a regular part of my routine with Dave. He was constantly mixing it up on me, but I always looked forward to the training with kettlebells. The range of motion, the strength necessary, and the cardio impact from a session of kettlebells is an all-around workout. Most of you will not be able to train personally with Dave. But this book is the next best thing. The many photos and the descriptive narrative is the alternative to being able to work out out with Dave. As I read the varieties of workouts in the book, they reminded me of the personal sessions that I had with him. So if you can't work out with him personally, get this book, get some kettlebells and start the routines. You won't be disappointed. ... Read more
