Product Description
This guide to Portuguese usage covers the Brazilian and European varieties of Portuguese, and differentiates clearly between them. It pays special attention to those areas of vocabulary and grammar which cause most difficulty to English-speakers and also includes a special chapter for students familiar with Spanish, highlighting similarities and differences between the two languages. Consideration is given throughout to questions of style and register. The text is an essential reference for intermediate as well as more advanced students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great learning companion
I've always had a fascination with learning to speak portuguese.Last year I bought all the 3 levels available from Rosetta Stone.Though that program was a great start, it is definitely NOT an end-all be-all solution.I then recently found a website, [...] and I kept learning there while connecting with native speakers from Brazil. This, in the long run was better than Rosetta Stone in my opinion, not to mention the fact that it was free too!Anyways,It still was not an end-all be-all solution either, however I don't think anything really is.You have to keep working at it.I found this book online as a limited "e-book", where it let me read a few pages. It has been very helpful, in describing rules, forms, and differences between the nations where portuguese is spoken.I'd recommened this book to anyone who is learning Portuguese.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful but not perfect
The chapters on contemporary Portuguese are a bit weak. Some examples are good, by register, but Africa, Brazil and Portugal are covered in less than two pages. One would have expected a fuller text.

Other chapters are more comprehensive. Some are good. I find that on "misleading vocabulary" quite helpful.

The Grammar chapters do not offer anything new. In fact, I prefer Manuela Cook's Portuguese course (Hodder), where grammar is explained very clearly and inserted into situational context, with practical vocabulary.

Another aspect of the the Ganho and McGovern book I can not appreciate is the few pages at the end on Portuguese for Spanish speakers. It is just too basic. I am a Spanish speaker and this short chapter has not helped me. All it contains I learned as a beginner. This is not for the more advanced learner as the book claims.

I am glad I have come across this book. I am also glad I have been able to use a library copy and did not have to spend money on it. Some sections of the book are useful but others are not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantástico!
Eu gosto muito este livro. Tem muito informação valiosa. Se você quer ter uma boa compreensão de português, compre-o agora!

I love this book. It's full of valuable information. As a Spanish speaker, I'm glad that the book has a section on Spanish and Portuguese comparisons and contrasts. If you're a student of the language, and wish to improve your Portuguese language skills, this is the book to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Grammar Book !
I've read a few Portuguese grammar books. I picked this one up in the bookstore the other day. I found it to be full of interesting things. It shows some differences between Brazilian, Continental, and African Portuguese. There is also a small section that show some diffences between Spanish and Portuguese. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect - compact - phrase book
I bought this phrase book for a recent trip to Portugal.
It was EXTREMELY handy:Primarily because of how well it is organized! There are sections for basic expressions, making friends, getting around, shopping, dining, and an A-Z index in the back of the book.I was amzaed how much information could be crammed into such a small book!It had just about every key phrase I ever needed on my trip. And - unlike Spanish - in Portuguese, "what you see is not always what you say".For this reason, the pronunciation guide for each phrase was a life saver!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent All-Purpose Pocket Reference
The book is very easy to use with excellent content. It is arranged by topic in color-coded sections. It has useful commentary and hints like you might find in a travel book. The dictionaries are minimal - only 44 pagesfor both. If you want to look up Portuguese words you'll need a separatedictionary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lemons & Limes
Lemons are not common in Brazil. When a Brazilian says the word "limão", he is thinking and talking about a green fruit that is known in Europe and America as "limes". The yellow fruit called "lemon" in English is not grown in Brazil (I don't know why) and many Brazilians have never seen a lemon. For them, a "limão" is a "lime". So, if you ask me"How many lemons does it take you to make a caipirinha?" the answer is "None. A good caipirinha is made with limes, not lemons."
The Hippocrene Brazilian Portuguese-English/English Brazilian Portuguese Concise Dictionary" was written by someone who knows about such things. The author has real knowledge of the subleties and differences of the two languages, and the dictionary is a reflection of that knowledge. Moreoever it has been written according to the latest spelling reform of the Portuguese language. Those are just a few of the reasons why it is highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I hope they put out a Portuguese 2!
I have a few of the Behind the Wheel programs: Italian 1, French 1, Spanish 3 (and maybe German 1 in the future.) They are all very helpful tools in my language-learning collection. I like them because, unlike a lot of language programs, they are not geared exclusively to tourists. If you are really passionate about learning a language and understanding the grammar and being able to converse and make friends with other people (not just to order food, book a hotel, schedule a flight, etc.), these programs are definitely for you.

The Portuguese 1 edition is no exception. I think it's mainly Brazilian Portuguese because of certain words and spellings they use, but that is okay with me. You start off by learning the most basic of words (pretty much one-word sentences.) By the end of the program you will be able to say simple sentences (in the present, past, and future), ask questions, and know the basic vocabulary (numbers, days of the week, people, etc.) If you are diligent enough, you should be able to have basic conversations with native speakers.

As for the price, I think it is a bit high, but if you are serious about learning Portuguese, then it is worth the money. You get 8 CDs. Each CD is about an hour long, so you get over 8 hours of learning in total. That's comprable to other language programs I've seen on Amazon.com and at bookstores. In fact, I've seen programs with just 2 or 3 CDs that are around the same price.

This program also comes with a booklet with a complete transcript. I have to say, though, that I wished the booklet was more detailled. (The booklet is only 22 pages.) This is only because I also have the booklets for French 1 and Italian 1 which contain grammar explanations and exercises in addition to the transcripts. (The booklets are almost 100 pages each!) I had also purchased Essential Portuguese Grammar (Dover Books on Language) on Amazon for about $5, and that has helped a lot in serving as a supplement. The book is geared more toward European Portuguese though. For me, I enjoyed the balance and being able to recognize the differences between the two dialects.

Of course, this program will not make you fluent. You'll have to do other things as well. I know that there are already second (or third) levels in Spanish, Italian, French, and German. That's why I hope that they put out a Portuguese 2 (and 3) in the near future. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Just for the effort, originality, and uniqueness it deserves five stars
I do not know how many of these type of dictionaries exist for other languages--I only own this one.It is very unique and organized by subject. However, it is not really that well organized and takes some getting used to.Both what people liked and disliked about this dictionary are true, and as far as I know, it is no longer published (it may be, but not available on this site).

I have to give it 4 stars for effort, but most people with poor memory skills (Americans for languages but not for people involved in divorces!!),this book would be useless.Americans, by and large, are terrible with languages, but this is because they are not forced to learn them, as people in other countries are often forced to learn English.

I could give you hints on how to master languages, but those can be found in another review of a book on how to learn languages.Look for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll learn words you don't know in ANY of these languages
I have this dictionary; mine has over 400 pages, although the discription in Amazon.com says it's 96 pages (I think there's only one for each ISBN number). It's a very, very comprehensive dictionary, with deep coverage of many different subjects. It comprises so many different subjects in so much depth that there are plenty of words here, even in Portuguese, that I don't know. Let alone in English! It's a MUST, especially if you like dictionaries and enjoy studying English mostly for the pleasure of learning.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good technical dictionary
This is a good TECHNICAL dictionary which provides translations for many words that could never be found in a normal Portuguese-English Dictionary.I am involved in aviation in Brazil and found quite detailed pictures ofairplanes and airplane subsystems.I found this to be true of many othersubjects in the dictionary such as construction, zoology and evenaerobatics. One small problem is that the English translation is inBritish technical terms. On some subjects this causes a bit of confusionas to the correct translation.Overall, a very helpful dictionary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must!
A must for a translator or anyone who needs a detailed vocabulary for any item.A plethora of pictures, all in extreme detail. You'll even learn new English vocabulary for things you've never seen before!A+

1-0 out of 5 stars Picture references are great but are very unorganized.
I bought this book at a local book store at Penn State University.I thought that the pictures would help and that this was a good dictionary, especially for paying almost $20.00.However, trying to use the book justadded more confusion. The dictionary contains no adverbs or adjectives ..nothing but nouns. If you are an anatomy major in Brazil trying to learnEnglish, maybe this will help you.You learn more about forbidden bodyparts than of regular day to day language.Even if you have to pay extramoney for a bulky, overpriced dictionary, it's better than buying this one. ...
