Product Description
From New York Times best-selling author Nevada Barr comes another episode in the successful sleuth series. When Anna Pigeon left New York City after her husband was killed, she hoped it would be forever. But now her sister Molly is clinging to life in an uptown hospital ICU, so Anna has reluctantly returned. Rooming with a friend and fellow park ranger in close quarters on Liberty Island -- the small strip of land that is home to Lady Liberty -- Anna spends her free time exploring the grand monument and the crumbling, overgrown, and eerie ruins in the unrestored sections of nearby Ellis Island. But the peace she seeks here is shattered when she finds herself among a crowd gathered at the Lady's base, staring at the broken body of a teenager who fell -- or was pushed -- to her death. Amazon.com Review
Imagine Nevada Barr's delight in discovering that there is actually anational park right smack in the middle of New York City--Gateways Park, which encompasses Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. She couldcontinue her splendid seriesabout park ranger Anna Pigeon and still do some serious shopping atBendel's and Berghdorf's, the kind of stores you don't find in the NewMexico cave setting of BlindDescent (her last adventure). The ploy works: Barr is probably theonly mystery writer who could see a natural environment under New York'sslick and sleazy skin.

Anna is in Manhattan to look after her sister Molly, seriously ill withpneumonia and a kidney infection. Pigeon moves in with a ranger friend whohas a place on Ellis Island. There's not much natural wildlife unless youcount her feathered namesakes, but she still manages to find a lot tocontemplate--especially the suspicious suicide of a teenage girl who leapsfrom Liberty's ledge, followed not long after by the security guard whotried to stop her. But Anna's snooping puts her own life in jeopardy. Shesurvives several attacks and a near drowning--events asfrightening as any of the fires, floods, and hurricanes from her past adventures.Barr neatly ties up her plot--ending with a brilliant chase scene acrossthe waters from Manhattan to Liberty Island. What next for Anna? Is there anational park in Las Vegas? --Dick Adler ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Liberty Falling
This was the second book of the Anna Pigeon series that I had read and I loved it. The charter and subject is so unique. Liberty Falling (Anna Pigeon Mysteries)

5-0 out of 5 stars Liberty falling(Nevada Barr)
As great fan of Nevada Barr and especially of the person: Anna Pigeon, this book (Liberty falling) again is very interesting!!! What I like is the suspense and in the same time you learn a lot about the surroundings.
Here I learned things I did not know before about the Liberty Statue and Ellis Island (+ground-plan!!!).
This time the scene is not in a National Park somewhere (with always much info about nature), but still the story grabs you. Woven through her work as district ranger is Anna Pigeon's personal life, which makes it even more fascinating!!!
I liked this book a lot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Even her "not the best" is good
Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are quickly explored, so there is less to learn -- or even write about -- in this espisode in Anna Pigeon's career. The upside is that we learn more about the characters of Anna and her sister, Molly, and so do they. Not being as fast-moving as the rest of this series does not condemn it.Nevada Barr is a fine writer and this is a good read. What's with the fixation on movies, though?

3-0 out of 5 stars Anna Pigeon visits the Statue of Liberty
Liberty Falling is another book depicting the life and times of one Anna Pigeon, National Park Service law enforcement ranger. This time she's in New York City visiting her critically ill sister, Molly.Anna finds herself staying with a friend working on on the Ellis Island complex, home of the Statue of Liberty.People start dying, Anna getsattacked, and there you have another NPS adventure.

You'll learn more about Anna Pigeon as a person, and Nevada Barr as a writer:

"Suicide makes no sense. Why crash a party you're going to be invited to sooner or later anyway?" (p. 144, hardback edition).

"Not for the first time, Anna was glad she was childless. It was traumatic enough to deal with the emotional needs of a dog.Children were probably worse. At least dogs couldn't call you on the phone" (p. 186).

"Most crimes had a linear quality. The root cause of this was that most criminals were not all that bright.Agatha Christie was bright.P. D. James was bright.Dick Francis was bright.Criminals were thugs. Not very creative. Not ingenious.Opportunists who'd flunked long-range planning.Hence, nonfictional crimes tended to be fairly straightforward" (p. 247).

This particular novel was less engaging than expected. The mysteries seemed more contrived, and Anna's engagement with them felt artificial.Themystery wasn't part of her job, and the lack of interest of anyone else in the murders and assaults was too unbelievable.I'll still keep reading other books in this series, but don't let your friends start with this volume.

Here's the list of Anna Pigeon novels, and the order in which they've been published (I've starred the ones I've read to date, to remind me):

1. Track of the Cat (1993)*
2. A Superior Death (1994)
3. Ill Wind (1995)*
4. Firestorm (1996)
5. Endangered Species (1997)*

Product Description
Robert Ervin Howard (1906-1936) was an American pulp writer of fantasy, horror, historical adventure, boxing, western, and detective fiction. He is well known for having created the character Conan the Cimmerian, a literary icon whose pop-culture imprint can be compared to such icons as Tarzan of the Apes, Sherlock Holmes, and James Bond. Voracious reading, along with a natural talent for prose writing and the encouragement of teachers, conspired to create in Howard an interest in becoming a professional writer. One by one he discovered the authors that would influence his later work: Jack London and Rudyard Kipling. It's clear from Howard's earliest writings and the recollections of his friends that he suffered from severe depression from an early age. Friends recall him defending the act of suicide as a valid alternative as early as eighteen years old, while many of his stories and poems have a suicidal gloom and intensity that seem prescient in hindsight, describing such an end not as a tragedy but as a release from hell on earth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Scott Hampton at his best
If you're a fan of Scott Hampton's artwork as I am, then you'll be glad to purchase this book. If you're also a Robert E. Howard fan, then what are you waiting for? Superb, fully painted renderings are Scott's forte - combine this with some amazing gothic horror and you've got one fine package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pigeons From Hell
Printed in June, 1976, Pigeons From Hell is in excellent condition.I intend to continue to preserve it.Actually, the story Pigeons From Hell is but one story amidst a set of Robert E. Howard short stories. My interest was in tracking down the original novel which inspired what most critics seem to maintain as the greatest installment among the 67 Thriller TV show (1960-62) episodes. The purchase was economical, of the highest quality and punctual.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Search!
I've been hunting for this book sine it was released in 1988, and I was recently lucky enough to acquire a signed edition of the hardcover. All I can say is that it was worth both the wait and the search.

Pigeons From Hell is adapted from the classic Robert E. Howard short story by artist Scott Hampton. The story is a pretty straightforward southern-gothic ghost tale, with a little gore thrown in for good measure. Howard's prose is some of his best, and Hampton's art is breathtaking. His dark, moody paintings evoke a sense of isolation and terror that had me totally drawn into the story. I couldn't stop reading. The book also contains a foreward by noted horror author Ramsey Campbell. Highly recommended for horror fans! ... Read more

As an elementary library media specialist I am always looking for quick good read alouds, and Mo Willems' pigeon books are tops of the list for pre-k through 3rd grade. I admit to being a bit of a ham and using voices, and the kids roll with laughter and shout out NO when the pigeon pleads to drive. They particularly like the nasal duckling voice I use with the hotdog book (think Steve Erkel). ... Read more

I purchased this book for someone as a gift. I believe thet were very happy with the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old India
Do watch "Junoon" if you can get it - hopefully it may have English subtitles.

This cinematizes this book. A Shashi Kapoor movie, with his wife Jennifer playing the girl's mother, and Nafisa Ali as the girl - the object of Javed's desire.

An example of some of the best Hindi movies made in Bombay.

(Before garbage Hindi movies got the silly moniker "Bollywood".)

4-0 out of 5 stars A very simple, yet gripping story
A Flight of Pigeons is set in Shahjahanpur, a small town 250 miles east of Delhi in India, during the revolt of 1857 against the British. The story is narrated by Ruth Labadoor, a young British girl, whose father gets killed as the revolt spreads to Shahjahanpur. She, her mother Mariam, and a few other surviving members of her family then get forcibly abducted by Javed Khan, a fiery pathan (true pathans -- as per the book -- are descendents of Afghan immigrants), who brings them to his house where he expresses his desire to marry Ruth. Mariam, who is wordly wise and resourceful, manages to persuade Javed Khan (not without a little bit of difficulty) to wait for the outcome of the revolt to be decided before marrying Ruth.

The next one year in the life of the Labadoors is an emotional roller-coaster where on one hand they are showered with compassion and affection from almost all of Javed Khan's relatives (there are many interesting and funny anecdotes); on the other hand, they live in constant fear that if the British rule is not restored, Javed Khan will eventually have his way and marry Ruth.

Ruskin Bond's style of storytelling is extremely plain and simple, but with an underlying humanity, and even the most vile characters are portrayed with a lot of sympathy and understanding. The book is based on true events and gives an interesting insight into the lives of both the British and Pathans in mid nineteenth century India. The book could have been a little longer (its barely 140 pages), but its still fun to read. ... Read more

Product Description

Why do we see pigeons as lowly urban pests and how did they become such common city dwellers? Courtney Humphries traces the natural history of the pigeon, recounting how these shy birds that once made their homes on the sparse cliffs of sea coasts came to dominate our urban public spaces. While detailing this evolution, Humphries introduces us to synanthropy: The concept that animals can become dependent on humans without ceasing to be wild; they can adapt to the cityscape as if it were a field or a forest.

Superdove simultaneously explores the pigeon's cultural transformation, from its life in the dovecotes of ancient Egypt to its service in the trenches of World War I, to its feats within the pigeon-racing societies of today. While the dove is traditionally recognized as a symbol of peace, the pigeon has long inspired a different sort of fetishistic devotion from breeders, eaters, and artists—and from those who recognized and exploited the pigeon's astounding abilities. Because of their fecundity, pigeons were symbols of fertility associated with Aphrodite, while their keen ability to find their way home made them ideal messengers and even pilots.

Their usefulness largely forgotten, today's pigeons have become as ubiquitous and reviled as rats. But Superdove reveals something more surprising: By using pigeons for our own purposes, we humans have changed their evolution. And in doing so, we have helped make pigeons the ideal city dwellers they are today. In the tradition of Rats, the book that made its namesake rodents famous, Superdove is the fascinating story of the pigeon's journey from the wild to the city—the home they'll never leave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pigeons are taking over the world!
We are all familiar with pigeons - I see a few dozen every day while living in Manhattan - but few people know about the history of the pigeon and how it is such an amazing bird! I learned so many interesting things from this book - how Reuters News started with pigeon carriers, how scientists still don't know how a pigeon can find his way home, and how pigeons perform many tasks better than most humans!

I find myself actually watching the pigeons in Manhattan now, instead of just passing them by unnoticed or seeing them as a nuisance."SuperDove" has changed the way I view Manhattan, pigeons, and other birds like Ravens and Crows. Also, I sent an email to the author complimenting her on the book, and she sent a very nice response - I always like when authors take the time to respond to my comments. . .it makes reading the book an even more pleasurable experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for lovers of pigeons or natural history
SUPERDOVE is a beautifully-written, in-depth history of how the "common" pigeon came to dominate cities the world around. Particularly interesting is the idea of synanthropy, wherein animals become dependent on humans while remaining wild. How the use, abuse, manipulation, adoration, and vilification of pigeons has shaped their evolution is a fascinating story. Author Courtney Humphries is immensely talented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring on the Pigeons!
A fascinating book about the bird that everyone takes for granted.I keep waking up my husband to read him fun pigeon facts.Who knew they mate for life?Navigate with iron in their beaks?A great read for anyone interested in birds, nature or evolution.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superdove
I approached this book with the mindset that a pigeon is a "rat with wings." However, through Courtney Humphries' careful and broad research, my mind made a paradigm shift. I was fascinated that Charles Darwin used pigeons for research animals. I was also fascinated by Humphries' discussion of domestication of animals. It might be not that man domesticated pigeons (and many animals) but that they just moved in with our long ago ancestors.

I was especially impressed by author's annotated bibliography at the end of the book. I did keep seeking an analysis of the criticism of urban pigeons as the carriers of many diseases other than the fact that there are often just so many of them that they leave considerable fecal waste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pigeons from all angles
"Superdove", a creative book title by Courtney Humphries, is a fascinating if not overly-comprehensive look at "Columba livia", our most ubiquitous avian neighbor. Destined to be loved or loathed, Humphries takes us on a pigeon journey from Boston, across parts of America to Sardinia, in the Mediterranean. What we can see about these adaptable birds is only part of the picture. The author helps to fill in the rest.

Humphries captures pigeons in several aspects of daily life...not only what they eat and how they nest, but how important pigeons have been in compatibility with humans. Indeed, this is one of the main thrusts of the book. We live side by side with them, but what do we really know about them? There is a good chapter on racing pigeons, as well as others on how they interact with each other, where they tend to congregate anddescriptions about their physical aspects. That pigeons are not very smart belies their ability to learn tasks at an astounding depth. Yet the one chapter that was most revealing was the one on homing. Attempts to defy and deny a pigeon's ability to find "home" run into problems...they have instincts that are nothing less than awesome.

"Superdove" is presented in a crisp, narrative style that's easy to read and I highly recommend it. It may not leave you liking the species any more than you had before, but Courtney Humphries has done a good job at educating us more than deeply than we had known. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Where Pigeons Go to Die Book Review
R. Wright Campbell develops a very deep metaphoric story of a man's last wish before dying and a bird's struggle with life during a flight home. Anyone who trains or even likes birds, would enjoy this story much more than I, but it is a story with a very deep meaning and can be looked upon in several different ways from any perspective.

The story focuses on a young boy, Hugh, who faces a struggle with a very beloved grandfather who becomes ill. Hugh also is worried about his cherished bird "Dickens" who is his number one bird. Dickens is many miles away, making his way back home. Hugh, the young boy is faced with being separated with the two most important things in his life at the same time, and learns to cope the best that a ten-year old boy knows how. Hugh realizes the similarity of his grandfather to his beloved pigeon; he sees that both just want to be back in their own bed. The story is easy to follow and can be enjoyed by any age group. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Stories of a Sadly Bygone Era.
Patrick Canfield's lovings tribute to his hometown and Schuykill County childhood will be enjoyed by anyone whose ancestors hailed from the coal regions of Pennsylvania. The region was raucious and wild, with immigrants striving to survive and mobsters, politicans and gamblers to rival a Prohibition movie. It was fun for me to find two descriptions of ancestors of mine and to get a feel what life was like for the miners.Warning if you are an animal rights nut: the author is unapolgetic about the enjoyment of pigeon shooting competitions and the characters who made up the sport. In sum, the book actually makes the depression era coaltowns seem like a pisser of a place to grow up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good look at early 20th century Schuylkill county.
I enjoyed reading about the amusing antics of a preteen gang growing up in a brawling Pennsylvania mining town during the Great Depression. How they stole pigeons out of the church tower and sipped the alter wine, theiramusing conflicts with their arch enemies the Lithuanians, better known asthe Brollies, and the stories of life in a parochial school and highschool. The section dealing with the hatred between the Irish andLithuanians leading to the riot of 1929 was most interesting. I alsoenjoyed the section following the life of "Butts" Canfield andhis teenage buddies who loved the life of the pool hall, gambling, dancingand tipping a few beers rather than follow the dictates of the nuns whowould prefer that they take music lessons and lead the good life. Readingabout the great pigeon matches, often hilarious and bloody, gave me aninsight to the laid back, hard drinking life style of the Pennsylvania CoalRegion. Stories of working on the WPA, fixed boxing matches, life in highschool during those turbulent days gave me many laughs. It's an easy read.
