Product Description
An up-to-date description of progress and current problems with the gravitational constant, both in terms of generalized gravitational theories and experiments either in the laboratory, using Casimir force measurements, or in space at solar system distances and in cosmological observations.
Contributions cover different aspects of the state and prediction of unified theories of the physical interactions including gravitation as a cardinal link, the role of experimental gravitation and observational cosmology in discriminating between them, the problem of the precise measurement and stability of fundamental physical constants in space and time, and the gravitational constant in particular.
Recent advances discussed include unified and scalar-tensor theories, theories in diverse dimensions and their observational windows, gravitational experiments in space, rotational and torsional effects in gravity, basic problems in cosmology, early universe as an arena for testing unified models, and big bang nucleosynthesis. ... Product Description

The book is intended to bridge the gap between fundamental physics courses (such as optics, electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and solid state physics) and highly specialized literature on the spectroscopy, design, and application of optical thin film coatings. Basic knowledge from the above-mentioned courses is therefore presumed. Starting from fundamental physics, the book enables the reader to derive the theory of optical coatings and to apply it to practically important spectroscopic problems. Both classical and semi-classical approaches are included. Examples describe the full range of classical optical coatings in various spectral regions as well as highly specialized new topics such as rugate filters and resonant grating waveguide structures.

Product Description

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is based on the fact that certain nuclei exhibit a magnetic moment, oriented by a magnetic field, and absorb characteristic frequencies in the radiofrequency part of the spectrum. The spectral lines of the nuclei are highly influenced by the chemical environment, i.e. the structure and interaction of the molecules. NMR is now the leading technique and a powerful tool for the investigation of the structure and interaction of molecules. The present Landolt-Börnstein volume III/35 "Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Data" is therefore of major interest to all scientists and engineers who intend to use NMR to study the structure and the binding of molecules. Volume III/35 ''NMR-Data'' is divided into several subvolumes and parts. Subvolume III/35A contains the nuclei B-11 and P-31, subvolume III/35B contains the nuclei F-19 and N-15, subvolume III/35C contains the nucleus H-1, subvolume III/35D contains the nucleus C-13, subvolume III/35E contains the nucleus O-17, subvolume III/35F contains the nucleus Si-29, and subvolume III/35G contains the nucleus Se-77. More nuclei will be presented later.

3-0 out of 5 stars Go for the uncondensed, unmodified, Si-14 instead
I did not pay much attention to the title before buying this - after all, you should not judge a book by its covers - what a mistake!

First of all, this book deals with compressed / condensed matter - they take the silion (Si-14), and condense it until it becomes like Copper (Cu-29). If I wanted something like Cu-29, why not start with Zinc (Zn-30) and uncompress it until it comes to 29? 30 is much higher than 14, and we all know that its better to dilute a better product than start with a bad raw material and try to purify it until it resembles something else.

I had a copy of the older series - uncondensed matter - and that just felt more pure, more in tune with the harmony in nature. Think of GMO corn, HCFS, farmed salmon, hydrogenated oils, and all the evils we have imposed on the world in the name of "progress". Do we need the same with matter as well? Isn't matter the building block of everything? Shouldn't we leave that untouched?

I am not even going to compare matter (condensed or not) and anti matter. That's a whole new can of worms.

The authors have done a good job presenting their side of the view. I have nothing against fine folks. I find this somewhat clashes with my personal beliefs.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better as an audiobook
The NMR technique received its well-earned reputation in this book, but it didn't shine until the audiobook.Scott Brick's tour de force performance crackles with a resonance that does the NMR proud. Each nucleus is a distinct persona, rendered with a depth and pathos that reaches its climax of coupling that left this reviewer dazzled.

Silicon-29, I'll never think of you again without hearing that gruff Long Island cadence of Mr. Brick.Like nuclei F-19 and Si-29, I am bound.

3-0 out of 5 stars Meh.
Don't take this the wrong way.I'm a big Gupta fan.I mean, he had me at "Adsorption of chromium from aqueous solution on treated sawdust," his famous article in Bioresource Technology. Then I read "Bioavailability, Toxicity and Risk Relationships in Ecosystems," which completely revolutionized my emotional life. But for fans of Silicon-29, I'm afraid this isn't going to be the eye-opener you'd been hoping for.

In the days before my dalliances with the nymphotic fans of Silicon-29, I might have enjoyed -- even loved -- this work. But I'm not that kind of naive any more.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saved me years of research
At the Boston inst of chemical tech we've been looking for ways to expand silicon usage for construction, thanks for the bonding information of this book we've successfully managed to merge silicon atoms with that of a small gibbon, who can now phase his physical body between carbon and silicon (sand) at will.

Unfortunately we lost the contract for silicon enhanced bricks, but at least we got a sweet sand gibbon out of it.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book destroyed my marriage
My ex-wife and I were both big fans of Silicon-29.However, after reading this book, her opinion changed.I think the biggest problem I had with the book was it's inability to explain quarks and quantum mechanics... one can understand how this would cause many an argument over string theory and how to actually find something without really looking for it - yet for some reason Dr. Gupta elected to skim over that section.I mean, who really tries to equate quantum mechanics to Quantum of Solace?Maybe Gupta was trying to make a joke in the Bond chapter (the name is Bond, Chemical Bond) but the section of wave particle duality and comparing it to sexual duality was just atrocious.Yes, it's perhaps a bit funny to make sexual jokes when talking about Silicon, but come on... we've all heard a silicon implant joke before, but a whole chapter with just jokes?

One expects something better from Gupta. With such literary thrillers as Carbon 14 dating, a history of finding history (best book ever) and the fact that he helped co-write the Large Hadron Collider rap (LHC), I've came to expect a bit more....

But back to the marriage part...As a huge fan of superfluidity and quantum entanglement, I found that living with a woman who didn't accept these theories as fact was intolerable. My ex-wife kept referring to this book as a source for all her arguments against these two well established theories.I mean, who can really trust anybody who doesn't believe 100% in the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox (which apparently Gupta and my ex wife do not). Before reading this travesty of a book, my wife was on board with the uncertainty principle.... Well, thank you very much Gupta for this book, a diatribe of garbage, which inadvertently change my wife's opinion on everything.

Ironically, my divorce cost as much as this book.

Product Description
This book combines a most interesting area of study, celestialmechanics, with modern geometrical methods in physics. According torecently developed views and research, one of the basic qualitativecharacteristics of an integrable Hamiltonian system is a structure ofthe Liouville foliation. A number of interesting results have beenobtained. In particular, some of the constructed topologicalinvariants did not appear in integrable cases investigated by manyresearchers earlier on. The topology of the isoenergy surfaces is alsostrongly different from what authors presented before. Some newtopological effects in the problems of dynamics on spaces of constantcurvature have been discovered. At present there are no other bookspublished in this particular area. This book is intended for specialists and post-graduate students incelestial mechanics, differential geometry and applications, andHamiltonian mechanics. ... Read more

Product Description
In theoretical physics, M-theoryis an extension of string theory in which 11 dimensions are identified. Because the dimensionality exceeds the dimensionality of five superstring theories in 10 dimensions, it is believed that the 11-dimensional theory unifies all string theories. Though a full description of the theory is not yet known, the low-entropy dynamics are known to be supergravity interacting with 2- and 5 dimensional membranes. This idea is the unique supersymmetric theory in eleven dimensions, with its low entropy matter content and interactions fully determined, and can be obtained as the strong coupling limit of type IIA string theory because a new dimension of space emerges as the coupling constant increases. Drawing on the work of a number of string theorists, Edward Witten of the Institute for Advanced Study suggested its existence at a conference at USC in 1995, and used M-theory to explain a number of previously observed dualities, sparking a flurry of new research in string theory called the second superstring revolution. ... Product Description
This work analyzes the historical development of the quantum theory of an ideal monatomic gas from the Sackur-Tetrode equation (1911-1912) up to the formulation of quatum statistics by Einstein (1924-1925) and Fermi (1926). In particular the paper analyzes the history of three concepts: the quantization of translational motion, gas degeneracy and the indistiguishability of identical atoms. ... Read more
