Editorial Review Product Description Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is based on the fact that certain nuclei exhibit a magnetic moment, orient by a magnetic field, and absorb characteristic frequencies in the radiofrequency part of the spectrum. The spectral lines of the nuclei are highly influenced by the chemical environment i.e. the structure and interaction of the molecules. NMR is now the leading technique and a powerful tool for the investigation of the structure and interaction of molecules. The present Landolt-Börnstein volume III/35 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Data is therefore of major interest to all scientists and engineers who intend to use NMR to study the structure and the binding of molecules. Volume III/35 "NMR-Data" is divided into several subvolumes and parts. Subvolume III/35A contains the nuclei 11B and 31P, subvolume III/35B contains the nuclei 19F and 15N, subvolume III/35C contains the nucleus 1H, subvolume III/35D contains the nucleus 13C, subvolume III/35E contains the nucleus 17O, and subvolume III/35G contains the nucleus 77Se. More nuclei will be presented later. |

Editorial Review Product Description Constants, such as the gravitational constant and the speed of light, are present in all the laws of physics. Recent observations have cast doubt on one of them. Does this mean that the structure of physics will crumble? Are we seeing the dawn of a scientific revolution? This book is written in the form of an enquiry into the importance of a possible variation in fundamental constants. Jean-Philippe Uzan and Bénédicte Leclercq ask such questions as: What is a constant? What role do constants play in the laws of physics? How can we verify that they are indeed constants? The authors take us though the history of the ideas of physics, evoking major discoveries from Galileo and Newton to Planck and Einstein and raising questions provoked by ever more current accurate observations. They approach physics by way of its constants in order to distinguish the fundamental from the particular, and to recognise different physical forces, but these cannot be drawn together into one unique force, as those seeking a unified theory would like. The book shows how the development of theories leads to simplification, analogy and the regrouping of phenomena. It describes how physicists seek to explain why the world is as it is and why can they cannot explain the values of the mass of elementary particles such as the electron and the proton. The authors ask if we can have confidence in the promising theory of superstrings, which would reinterpret these particles as states of vibration of the strings, extended objects appearing only in macroscopic dimensions. This highly instructive survey of physics, from the laboratory to the depths of space, explores the paths of gravitation, general relativity and new theories such as that of superstrings. It is complete and coherent, and goes beyond the subject of constants to explain and discuss many ideas in physics, encountering along the way, for example, such exciting details as the discovery of a natural nuclear reactor at Oklo in Gabon. |

Editorial Review Product Description Customer Reviews (1)
Erudite and encyclopedic but extremely expensive The set gets about one star for value, because it's priced like a last-minute airline ticket--those who need it sufficiently badly will pay.The publishers want something getting on for a grand for 5 books, and *two and a half grand* for the same thing in software, which costs nothing to reproduce! For most people, the abbreviated tables in recent editions of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics are better than good enough, though it would be great to be able to afford Palik and Ghosh. If the price ever comes down by a factor of three, I'd probably buy the books, but it would take a factor of 10 before I'd consider the software. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description This is the third in a series of topical-review volumes about the precision physics of simple atoms all published in LNP. The simplicity of atoms allows one to use them as a tool to explore effects beyond atomic physics ranging from fundamental constants and fundamental symmetries to particle and nuclear properties. This volume, like its predecessors, presents multidisciplinary treatments of important areas and new developments within precision physics. It concentrates on new topics and those not treated in the previous volumes. For example, on the proton structure and its effects on the energy levels, on simple molecules, on atoms somewhat more complicated than hydrogen (such as lithium), on exotic atoms and atoms with exotic nuclei. |
