Editorial Review Product Description Children face many serious health concerns, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. Teachers can use Physical Education Methods for Elementary Teachers, Third Edition, to help children avoid these and other health issues and steer them to better health. Many new guidelines and mandates have arisen in recent years, including new dietary guidelines for Americans, an updated food guide pyramid system, a federally mandated school wellness policy, and coordinated school health legislation. This text is thoroughly revised to keep in step with these guidelines and mandates, and it will help preservice and in-service classroom teachers and physical education specialists provide best practices in physical education, physical activity, and healthy eating. This third edition extends existing information on integrating academics and physical activity. New material includes sections on character development and the positive youth development model as well as more practical tools for developing teaching skills. In addition, the authors place more emphasis on goal orientation and motivational climate, two factors associated with maintaining physical activity. They outline strategies for creating an environment where students choose to participate in physical activity with confidence, enthusiasm, and a desire to learn. Teachers who are not accustomed to teaching in the gym environment will find the video clips on the DVD-ROM especially useful, and they can use the lesson plans also provided on the DVD-ROM in concert with the video clips to apply the concepts in their own teaching. Teachers can use these lesson plans as is or as models for writing their own lesson plans. Each plan illustrates a key concept or method in the book, thus reinforcing and extending readers' understanding and enhancing their teaching practice. Written in an engaging, informal style, the text helps teachers learn what they need to know without having to decipher jargon or being overloaded with excessive information. Accessible, interesting, current, and practical, Physical Education Methods for Elementary Teachers, Third Edition, will help beginning teachers to create healthier schools and to feel confident in presenting essential information and creating exciting learning activities for their students. |

This point is emphasized as authors regularly use humorous anecdotes, sketches, and corollaries to enliven the reading and drive home key points. This text removes the fear and confusion often associated with the research process and shines a light on all the aspects of research that readers need to know—whether it’s reading, understanding, planning, carrying out, writing, or presenting research. Editorial Review Product Description How do children and young people experience and understand sport and physical activity? What value do they attach to physical education and physical literacy? This important new book attempts to engage more directly than ever before with the experiences of young people by placing the voices of the young people themselves at the centre of the discussion. As the need to listen to young people becomes increasingly enshrined in public policy and political debate, this book illuminates our understanding of an important aspect of the everyday lives of many young people. With contributions from leading researchers and educationalists from around the world, the book draws on a diverse range of methodological and theoretical perspectives to demonstrate how we can better understand the unique perspectives of young people, how teachers and coaches can respond to and engage with the voices of young people, and how young people can be afforded opportunities to shape their education and leisure experiences. The book presents a fascinating range of case studies from around the world, including the experiences of African American girls and masculine sporting identities in Australia, and addresses both theoretical and policy debates. Young People’s Voices in Physical Education and Youth Sport is essential reading for any serious student or professional with an interest in PE, youth sport, sports development, sports coaching, physical activity and health, education or youth work. |

Editorial Review Product Description Right Fielders Are People Too helps middle school physical education teachers establish and maintain a positive learning environment that allows students to work to their potential. The inclusive, developmentally appropriate program described in this book helps students feel comfortable in class and develop a positive attitude toward physical activities. Students can learn skills without intimidation and experience the joy and exhilaration of physical activities, even if they can't perform the activities very well. Author John Hichwa, 1993 NASPE Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year, shares the successful strategies he developed in 35 years of teaching K-8 students. The book's friendly, teacher-to-teacher format and nearly 150 unique drawings make the methods and activities easy to understand, whether you've been teaching for several years or are just beginning your first student-teaching experience. Hichwa provides insights into the challenges of teaching middle school physical education and shares examples from his classes, offering a perspective not available in textbooks. He also presents more than 100 innovative games and activities for developing physical skills, cooperative behaviors, and problem-solving abilities. But Right Fielders Are People Too is not simply one teacher's ideas-the entire book is connected to the NASPE National Standards for Physical Education and follows the developmentally appropriate guidelines. The format of the book resembles a doubleheader baseball game. Game 1 discusses various characteristics of middle school children and describes an effective middle school physical education program. By following Hichwa's practical advice, you'll learn how to * integrate the teaching of respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness into the curriculum; * get feedback about students' concerns and feelings and their understanding of the material presented; * develop new teaching skills, such as debriefing and involving students in the grading process; * motivate students by helping them track their own progress; and * involve parents in their children's physical education. Game 2 offers specific suggestions for planning day-to-day activities. From musical push-ups to the rolling river raft to school rugby, you'll find activities that will maximize class participation by making physical education fun! Customer Reviews (2)

Editorial Review Product Description Can we imagine a future in which physical education in schools no longer exists? In this controversial and powerful meditation on physical education, David Kirk argues that a number of different futures are possible. Kirk argues that multi-activity, sport-based forms of physical education have been dominant in schools since the mid-twentieth century and that they have been highly resistant to change. The practice of physical education has focused on the transmission of de-contextualised sport-techniques to large classes of children who possess a range of interests and abilities, where learning rarely moves beyond introductory levels. Meanwhile, the academicization of physical education teacher education since the 1970s has left teachers less well prepared to teach this programme than they were previously, suggesting that the futures of school physical education and physical education teacher education are intertwined. Kirk explores three future scenarios for physical education, arguing that the most likely short-term future is ‘more of the same’. He makes an impassioned call for radical reform in the longer-term, arguing that without it physical education faces extinction. No other book makes such bold use of history to interrogate the present and future configurations of the discipline, nor offers such a wide-ranging critique of physical culture and school physical education. This book is essential reading for all serious students and scholars of physical education and the history and theory of education. |

Editorial Review Product Description Teaching the Nuts and Bolts of Physical Education is back and better than ever! This second edition offers both a book and a new CD-ROM that provide instructions on teaching 24 basic locomotor and manipulative skills, building in students a sturdy foundation for a lifetime of physical activity. You get two significant new features with this version. First, you receive a trimmed-down, spiral-bound book that has thicker pages for durability and portability. The book's durability makes it perfect for using in the gym or on the field to show students how to perform skills correctly. This book is both simple and thorough in its skill presentation. It contains clear, effective skill instruction, breaking skills into three to six components each, providing cues to use with each skill and 111 illustrations to clearly demonstrate skill techniques. The text also offers a troubleshooting chart for spotting and correcting common errors, and it features numerous individual, partner, and group activities to reinforce each skill. Many of these activities integrate other basic skills, thus enhancing overall skill acquisition. The book is so trimmed down because the second new feature is a CD-ROM with 312 printable pages covering all 24 skills. This CD-ROM provides full descriptions to support the field-ready printed guide. It includes In addition, the CD-ROM includes partner assessment sheets for children who can read as well as for nonreaders (skill drawings are included to help students recognize the quality of their partners' skills). These sheets will help students master the components of each skill. The authors bring a combined 90-plus years of experience in developing teaching strategies and ideas, and all the activities in the book are "kid tested" by elementary students--and by college students studying elementary education, who showed significant pedagogical improvement when using the text. It's been well documented that early movement success is crucial to later skill acquisition and that the primary emphasis during early elementary grades should be on movement skill acquisition. Many books focus on what should be taught, but few resources clearly indicate how to teach those skills. With Teaching the Nuts and Bolts of Physical Education, Second Edition, you will learn what to teach, how to teach it, and how to have fun and successful experiences with your students.
