This is wonderful look at men from primarily blue collar America.The images are classic and timeless.One of my favorite photographs is on page 46, it is entitled "Young men drinking beer, Foley, Minnesota, 1981."For me this image captures an era and an area where I grew up.While I don't know the guys in the image, they look like the guys I knew when I was younger.Tom does a great job of capturing everyday life in a way that makes you proud to live it.The printing matches the overall quality of his own printing.It's a good book to have. ... If you are a native of Atlanta or just a connoisseur of good photography you will enjoy this book.Gleason gets some incredible shots of the Atlanta skyline.If their is one minor flaw it would be that he forcuses to much on downtown and not enough on areas such as Buckhead and Druid Hills.One of the best things about arial books such as this is that you get to see the city from a different perspective.Gleason captures the essence of Atlanta, capital of the New South. ... Fascinating glimpse into Korean history
Having worked in Korea, and visiting Seoul many times while I was there, I have developed a keen interest in Korean history, particularly in the colonial era as Korea began to open its kingdom to the West for the first time. This book helps me visualise what the people, and the places, were like as Korea moved into the modern age.

A number of photographs were taken by Herbert Ponting, who later accompanied Captain Scott to the Antarctic, and by Felice Beato, who is the first known photographer to have worked in Korea, having being part of the American Trading expedition in 1871. Other early western photgraphers have their images reproduced here.A number of Japanese photographers also worked in Korea, during the time of the Japanese colonial occupation, and a sampling of their work is included.

There are images taken from the first significant foray by the Western world into Korea by America, American ships making their presence felt on the Korean penisular in 1871 and capturing, probably for the first time ever, photographic images of Korean people.

There are samplings of the initial contact with the outside world, and of some of the minor ensuing conflicts.Farming and industries are depicted as is daily Korean life in the cities such as weddings and funerals, and general street scenes such as cobblers plying their trade.There are a number of formal portraits of members of the aristocracy and government officals.There are also hand coloured photgraphs of members of Korean embassy staff in Japan, which are interesting for the ceremonial costumes they are wearing.

I can highly recommend "Korea Caught in Time" if you have an interest in Korean history, as it will supplement any history books you may have on Korea.

Rare pictures from unknown land.
This book presents rare pictures form a country that had sealed itself off from the rest of the world and tried to keep out the west.Not until the latter part of the last century was Korea forced to open up.The pictures not only present first impressions of Korea by western photographers, but also show an early show of western force against the desire of Korea to keep itself free of western influence.The early documentation of imperial force gives thought to how much or how little things have changed from just a century ago. Exceptionally blurry!
Well, it boils down to this: if you like blurry photos, you'll probably like this book.They are all blurry and/or out of focus and/or doubly-exposed.I know this is supposed to be one of the "artistic" ("arty" is more like it) styles of the day, but I happen to like a bit more clarity and definition in photos.And for page after page after page . . . truly, if you've looked at one of these photos, you've looked at them all.One hardly ever sees the bloody bull except as a blur the size of a cat.As for the essays, all that information can easily be found in other, much cheaper, sources.So, even with the generous Amazon discount, this over-priced and cumbersome volume is a major disappointment.

Exceptional
This is actually a photography book that happens to be about the art of bullfighting.But what's amazing about it is that it has none of the documentary aspect of all other books about bullfighting; it is so uniquely and remarkabily photographed that you actually see what has made bullfighting an artform in Spain and other places where it is so revered:it is really a ballet.I believe this book will someday be a classic.I have never seen anything quite like it.The extraordinary manufacturing and design job by the publisher, combined with absolutely breathtaking photography make it a necessity for anyone who loves extraordinary books, photography, art, or bullfighting.Grab one while you can!

Magical
Spectacular photography and production!Photo after photo takes you into the bullring, into the beauty and art of bullfighting.I love this book because the images are so surreal and yet so real and beautiful.The mystique of beloved España has never been so well captured, despite the fact that this book is an in-depth look at one part of the culture.My husband loves this book because it covers bullfighting so well, with a technical variety.But I have been seduced by the beauty alone.Essays complement the photography perfectly, and Ricardo Sanchez shines! ... Looking at the sound
I had thought that this was the paperback version of The Blue Note Years: The Jazz Photography of Francis Wolff but as it says in the book this is another selection of Francis Wolf photos, most unseen, too.If you've ever seen a Blue Note LP cover from the fifties and sixties you'll know what Wolff's photos look like: mostly photographed in Rudy Van Gelder's darkened recording studio, so the musicians leap at you because there are hardly any other visual distractions, their bodies have a texture that fades into the dark background.

I particularly like the photos because Wolff doesn't make his presence felt,no one is looking at the camera, these guys were captured socking out another cracking Blue Note session.With these photos you can see what the BN sound looked like and nicely, the captions list the titles to the sessions so if you have any of the recordings you'll be able to add an extra dimension to the listening experience.

The book looks pretty cool, too.The black and whites are printed in four color to give them a solid appearance but surprisingly the screen is only 150 though the printing gives the impression that 175 or 200dpi might have been used on the matt art paper.The contemporary looking layout enhances the images.There are several musicians who get more than one photo but oddly only one of the great Rudy Van Gelder.To my mind he is the one responsible for the success of the label over the years.Maybe the first book had more of him at work.

Overall a beautiful book of jazz photos and it certainly goes well with Blue Note: Album Cover Artby Graham Marsh where designer Reid Miles does wonders with Francis Wolff's camera creativity.

Blue Note photo diary
For all the Jazz Lovers, this is a beautiful photographic collection of all the greatest musicians of this trade; moreover, it's the look from an 'insider' to get a glimpse of almost intimacy with the artists at work. Excellent quality, both photographic and 'sentimental': recommended!

Great Photos, Lousy Binding
The book features stunning examples of classic photos of some of my favorite jazz artists by Francis Wolff including some I hadn't seen elsewhere.However, the cover seemed cheap/flimsy.In fact the cover separated from the pages in transit.Even at this price, I'd shy away from this one in favor of the more expensive hard cover unless you're planning on cutting out the photos any way.

The All Seeing Eye of Blue Note Records
This is the finest collection of Jazz Photography ever assembled! If you're a fan of jazz, or Blue Note Records, you must own this book. As a co-owner of Blue Note, Francis Wolff had the opportunity to arrest time with his lens while the titans of jazz created quintessential music. All the faces you would expect are here, Thelonious Monk, Miles, Coltrane, etc. Yet so are others whose names have been unfairly excluded from the roster of jazz immortals, men like Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, Lee Morgan and many more. This collection is tastefully assembled, carefully balancing a trove of color and black & white prints with aesthetic perfection. Its 176 pages are bursting with images that inebriate the eyes; many are published here for the first time. Along the way, written snapshots built on the visual perspective. You can hear the music pouring from these images. You can feel the excitement of it's genesis. The musicians were comfortable with Wolff and his lens. He captured their essence in a way that no other could. Pick this up before it goes out of print.

Phantastic photography!
Even if you haven't heard the name Francis Wolff before you have probably seen many of his photos already. They can be found on many Blue Note albums. Some of them also became classics on their own. Francis Wolff is the co-founder of the Blue Note record label. Before becoming a full-time producer by the end of the Sixties, he spent a lot of his time taking photos of the artists while they were recording. All these photos are taken with a sort of simple equipment (just a camera and one flash) without posing. The photos were taken while the musicians were playing or composing of resting. There is an enormous depth and clarity in the pictures and you can nearly sense the personalities of the musicians. This collection of Wolff's photography is a must for every fan of classical photography and, of course, it's a must for die-hard Blue Note fans. ... Read more
