Beautiful book
Beautiful book inside & out, lovely for coffee tables & conversation starters. I have been waiting to get this book for awhile, and finally it comes with out dissappointment!

Nice book for coffee table but the prints are hard to keep in until you are ready to frame them.

Best of the best
I purchased this book for my father's 89th birthday.We all looked through the book, and everyone could remember seeing different pictures over the years.For anyone who grew up with Life magazine this is nostalgia at it's best. There are lots of memories in this book, both happy and the sobering.

Interesting photo book
This Life book has many of their most famous shots in it. And many of them are removable from the book. The print quality of the removable work is rather poor however. They are not good enough to be framed and displayed in my opinion.

But still, this book is well worth having at this price. If you are a photographer it will certainly give you lots of ideas that can be applied to your own work. And if you are not a photographer you will get a fascinating slice of American history. My ten year old was very interested in this book.

When It Was A Game
George Brace was a freelance Chicago photographer for over 50 years who covered athletes visits to Wrigley Field, Comiskey Park and Soldier Field. He was able to capture not only athletes in photo, but also was able to capture a sense of what the athlete was like in real life by getting to know them on a personal level over many years of speaking with them and photographing them during their careers. His daughter has taken over his collection of pictures he took over the years and has a data base of over 35,000 photos in the collection for sale on a chicago based web-site: [...].

A must-have for any baseball fan.George Brace captured ballplayers both as they entered the game and in their prime.It's one of my favorites in a rather large collection of sports books.

Pictoral review of men who played for the love of the game!
I picked this book up and could not put it down until I read it from cover to cover.I swear I could hear the crack of the bat and roar of the crowd as I moved from page to page looking at the pictures and reading the commentary.The warmth of the pictures has made this the number one selection in my personal baseball library.

A Landslide MVB (Most Valuable Book)!
If this book's photographs represent only a fraction of Mr. Brace's total collection of negatives, then more should be rolling off the presses. Not only do they offer a great glimpse into a glorious past, the captions areequally superb. This is a work that's more than baseball: it's Americanhistory.

Lest we forget
Ok: It wasn't so long ago we were watching tv on tiny black and white tubes, drinking ice cream sodas from a fountain and Diet Coke hadn't been invented (so women strapped themselves into girdles to banish the bulge.) The pictures in "Remembrances of Times Past" remind us of how far we've come in a century. Since my mom dates from the 20's and I from the 50's, we can together pore over this book and think: when Mom was a kid there was barely refrigeration! When I was a kid, the tv was a novelty and the computer in high school was a terminal from Ford Motor Company and you inserted a punched paper tape to run a single kilobyte program. Wow. It's fun to reminisce. Delightful.

Delightful and fascinating stroll down memory lane
This is about the 20th century in America, at home, around the radio, in front of the TV, at the dinner table, in the garage, behind the wheel, in the kitchen.It's about what we ate and what we listened to and watched.What we bought, what we wore, how we behaved and what we did for a living.Marta Hiatt does an amazing job of weaving nostalgic black white photos of people, places and things with her own beguiling narrative interspersed with quotes from ordinary people who lived during these times.The result is book that I literally could not put down.In fact I put aside some other books to read it.

Remember doing the dishes with soap that wouldn't make suds in hard water? I do.The grease wouldn't get emulsified.It just got moved around.It took 10-year-old me hours to do the dishes from a big meal.Remember the washboard and the wringer that you were warned about getting your fingers caught in?Remember margarine, white like lard in a clear plastic bag, but with a little red ball that you broke and kneaded into the margarine to make it yellow?Remember corsets and garter belts and stockings that got runs in them?Leopold and Loeb, Al Capone, Patty Hearst, and Charlie Manson?Manual typewriters and the milk man?Or when the iceman did cometh and you put a square sign in the window with a chosen side up showing how much ice you needed?Popeye and spinach?Walking a mile for a Camel, and this ad on page 239: "No curative power is claimed for Philip Morris but--...An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure!...Call for Philip Morris"?The ad is from 1934.It is interesting how the tobacco companies projected their fears and revealed that even then they knew that cigarettes may cause disease.

Hiatt remembers all this and a lot more.You will find yourself turning the pages--which is to be expected since photos of those old ads, movie posters, people in quaint clothing, etc. are just so much fun to see; but what surprised me is just how readable the prose is.Hiatt's direct, unpretentious style and her knack for picking people to quote who are also straightforward make this one irresistible read.If there is any single theme that stands out, it would be the liberation of women, or truthfully, the partial liberation of women that has taken place most profoundly in the twentieth century. Hiatt does an excellent job of chronicling this momentous development and she points to some of the changes it has brought about.

The book is organized into chapters concentrating on various aspects of our lives, beginning with "Lifestyle," followed by "Sex and Social Mores," to "Household," through "That's Entertainment," "Fashion," and "Science and Technology," ending with Chapter Twelve, "A Potpourri of Changes."

Reading this is a bit like seeing the changes that have taken place in our lifetimes as in a newsreel (remember them?) sped up and vivid, perhaps like our lives passing before us...Irresistible book.

Fun and sometimes sad trip down memory lane
Here in Minnesota, Southdale Mall is 50--one of the oldest enclosed shopping centers. This was one of the hundreds of modern conveniences that changed our life in the 20th century--this one changed the way we shopped.

Not all conveniences ended up necessarily being "good things." Example is the credit card. Prior to credit cards, if you wanted to buy something but didn't have the full amount, you'd put it on "lay away," paying an amount each payday until it was yours, paid in full. This was "delayed gratification," unheard of today.

After WWII, advertisers learned that "sex sells." In early 1960, "the pill" was introduced for birth control. Its biggest "side effect" was the sexual revolution, fueled by the Hippies and Beat Generation. Until then, there was a stigma for unmarried women to have sex. However, everything changed again when AIDS and genital herpes appeared.

The author has melded together historical facts with letters and telltale photos from people born in the 1930-40-50s about these changes and how it affected them. These letters were so honest and true.

Until 1969, gay people were deemed "mentally ill" by psychiatrists. This was deleted from the list and now it has become an alternative lifestyle."

The Civil Rights movement saw desegregation, increased rights for African Americans--but at the same time, in 1960, we saw the assassination of President Kennedy, his bother bobby and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., along with riots at the 1968 Democratic convention. Times were a-changin'!

This book focuses on the 1940-1970 era mostly--and this was quite a time after WWII. The country changed and so did the family values.

The book includes sections like: Lifestyle; Sex and Social Mores; Household/homemakers; That's Entertainment; Fashion; Work; Health, and Science. Then there was technology and transportation and...and...and...

Armchair Interviews says: WOW! The memories this book brings backs are worth hours of talking with those who share these memories. It would be a great gift for Mother's or Father's Day as well.

A virtual American History museum in book form.

Author Marta Hiatt revisits a quieter, less complicated time when Mother's were at home baking and cleaning, Father's worked and children played games and used their imaginations. Highways were two lanes, sometimes dirt rather than asphalt and cars were scarce. Board games and cards were the entertainment of the day and children played outdoors where their imaginations bloomed. Not everything was easy in the "Good old days" however, people did much more physical labor and household chores were demanding and challenging. Some good points...but credibility ruined by his hatred of Israel
I think that Hughes has some good points about the war in Iraq and the dangers of administrations like Bush's.Where he loses me is in his hatred towards Israel -- this is a man who thinks that Israel shouldn't exist and blames many of our country's problems on Israel's existance.He seems to really believe that there would have been no 9/11 or no war in Iraq if Israel didn't exist in the first place.Sorry, Hughes...a bit far-fetched!

Sounds like a bad idea to me.No matter where you stand on that particular topic.

Yet on this book, there is a 15-year old (is his name Kids Review or is this supposed to be one) posting hisreview twice.

I strongly disagree with all of the reviewers of this book. I am only fifteen and I can still see the error in your 5 star giveaway . The fact that everybody is convinced the media is somehow cuddling with Bush is simply moronic. Need I remind you that all except for one national news channel (Fox News Channel) leans to the left (to different degreesof course)And just because someone writes a book about something you beleive in, doesn't make it well written. Final thought, I think this book was poorly written and I'm not even a republican, then again I'm not a democrat either. I just hope some people take my reveiw into consideration.

Intelligent and courageous
In his book, "Saying 'No' to the War Party," William Hughes intelligently and courageously covers many important topics, bringing to bear on many of them his extensive law experience.The voice of the people is so often ignored, as the mass media cozy up to the bottom line of profit-making.Mr. Hughes shows no such restraint, and his writing is refreshingly honest.

Hughes is Waiving a "Red Flag" warning America!
Of all the essays in this book, I think the one entitled, "War Is Theft," sort of sums up everything up that the author has to say, and in a cogent way, too. In talking of the Iraq War, (which was starting that very day, March 20, 2003), the author asked, "Who's going to pay for this immoral, obscenely expensive, clearly unjustified war with Iraq? Answer: The American taxpayers, that's who!"There are other essays by Hughes that are just as compelling, whether they are about the War Hawks, the fading national economy, the union-bashing "free trade" policy, the demise of our Steel Industry, or those scheming Neocons. Hughes is right on target. As a citizen of this once-great Republic, which is headed for a train wreck, I think Hughes is out their waving a "Red Flag," to warn us there is trouble down the road. Helped me arrange pictures behind my sofa!
This book is exactly what I was looking for. I needed inspiration for arranging my pictures behind my sofa. Plenty of ideas in this book - not only arranging ideas, but cute ways to dress up frames, mats, and creative hanging styles. I got about 3/4 of the way through and I had my ah-ha! moment of how to arrange my own pictures.
I looked around for a book like this for a while and I didn't find anything that was close. I'm so happy I bought this book.

Definitely the best book on the subject, I have come across
While working on the decoration of a new house, I tried quite a few books on topics such as decoration, picture framing and display and so on. I can say with confidence that this one has helped me more than any other, on how to make the most of pictures, prints, photographs etc. that I had and was not sure where or how to use. With lots of ideas, practical advice and a well organized lay-out of chapters and material, not only has it offered answers and fresh solutions but it has saved me money as well. 100% worth buying, I strongly reccomend it.

A must have book
This is a must-have book for industrial photography fans.It shows the kind of locations I tried to photograph before getting stopped by security.Steel Remembered eloquently captures the gritty drama of behemoth machinery, but also the faces of Steel, the workers.The miracle story of how these photos were saved is worth the price alone, and the glossary is a plus.Being of a certain age, I lived my childhood on Cleveland's West Side, and I remember wondering at the orange glow that lit up the sky at night from time to time.I later learned it was when Republic and J&L were purging vessels, like those shown here.Black and white, the play of light and shadow, these photos are evocative and will strike a chord in anyone who lived or worked in a steel town or simply acknowledged the architectural magnificence of these structures and machines.

My memories - 30 yaers
As an employee of LTV steel for all 16 plus years it existed the pictures of Cleveland were interesting. Some of the names were of people I remember well. The origins of both sides of the mill in Cleveland were as I remember hearing and seeing them at company meetings and pamphlets. I was at Republic (Corrigan/McKinney) prior to LTV being formed and spent some time at the old J&L (Otis) plant also. I have some of the old in house news pamphlets and this goes well with them. I could only wish there were more pictures from the years I was there. Thanks for the memories.

History Remembered....
If you are a photographer, photography buff, LTV retiree, history buff, or 4 year old boy, this is the book for you.As a photographer and history buff, I enjoyed pouring through this book and viewing all the photographs from back in the day.The author really seemed to care about the content of the book and included some amazing photographs from the LTV Collection.It had the feel of the old Farm Bureau Admin Photographers.
I also loved reading the history behind the photos and the book.The writing was good and the history informational.
My 4 year old son loved pouring through the photos in the book.The trains, boats, and steelyards were definitely attention catchers for him.
And my favorite part of the book is the front cover.The dark ominous steel yard photo is perfect for such an amazing bit of our history here in Ohio.It also made me feel upset that so much of our steel industry is out sourced now.That so many people have lost their jobs etc.
