5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book.
I found this 3rd edition book to be very thorough for any that are not going to be a Pharmacist, but a nursing student, pharmacy tech student, or any interested in learning more about this subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Other Reviews don't make sense
I don't quite understand the other reviewers comments. This text is called Pharmacology for technicians not Certification review. This book is a book designed to be used in a Pharmacy Technician class not as a certification review. I have been a Pharm Tech teacher for 6 years and this has been my favorite so far. So many texts don't go into pharmacology and medications as much as they should.
If your looking for a review book for Certification then this is not the book for you but if you want to know more about pharmacology and drugs (which every technician should) then this is a great text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great informative book
The book is very informative. However the information in the book is not entirely needed for certification. Using this book will better prepare someone for the thousands of different medications in a hospital or retail pharmacy. Very few medications are actually covered on the national exam. Use the CD that is provided it is packed with extra information and of course the answers to the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't expect this book to get you certified
If you take the practice certification exam, available online at the website of the organization that administers the real test, you will find that most of the questions are not answered in this or rhe other Ballington books. They manage to be long and packed with irrelevant information without including the things you will actually need to know to get certified.Look somewhere else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I'm not satisified with the purchase of this book because there are no answers to the chapter review questions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
The book is thorough, logical in sequence, and provides a good range of things one might get tested on, in more than one way.Excellent for those with no prior knowledge of the subject, and still interesting for those who do.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Book!!!
I studied from this book alone for two weeks and passed the exam on my first try.

5-0 out of 5 stars Calling all wanna-be Pharm Techs.
I really dig this book. Lots of great information and told in a way that doesn't make me want to take a nap every time I open it up. I'm using this to study for the national test and I'm feeling a lot more confident about certification than I would be without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!

Product Description
This unique and much needed textbook meets the rapidly emerging needs of programs training pharmacologic scientists seeking careers in basic research and drug discovery rather than such applied fields as pharmacy and medicine. While the market is crowded with many clinical and therapeutic pharmacology textbooks, the field of pharmacology is booming with the prospects of discovering new drugs, and virtually no extant textbook meets this need at the student level. The market is so bereft of such approaches that many pharmaceutical companies will adopt Hacker, et al. to help train new drug researchers.

The boom in pharmacology is driven by the recent decryption of the human genome and enormous progress in controlling genes and synthesizing proteins, making new and even custom drug design possible. This book makes use of these discoveries in presenting its topics, moving logically from drug receptors to the target molecules drug researchers seek, covering such modern topics along the way as side effects, drug resistance, Pharmacogenomics, and even nutriceuticals, one in a string of culminating chapters on the drug discovery process.

*Uses individual drugs to explain molecular actions
*Full color art program explains molecular and chemical concepts graphically
*Logical structure reflecting the current state of pharmacology and translational research, starting with receptors and finishing with target molecules
*Covers such intricacies as drug resistance and cell death
*Consistent format across chapters and pedagogical strategies make this textbook a superior learning tool ... Read more

Clinical Decision Making Case Studies in Pharmacology is a systematic, application-based resource for users to develop their nursing knowledge in clinical situations. This book contains 40 pharmacology case histories and questions, based on real life client situations, which make learning easier and more memorable than textbook discussion.Current review of literature indicates that many users believe that case study in pharmacology enhances learning and improves examination success. Each case in this innovative book is followed by a series of questions and appropriate nursing responses, which encourages analytical thought and consideration of numerous variables.Because each case opens with a blueprint of key variables to consider, no two cases are alike.Users will need to consider such things as collaborative management, gerontological considerations, complementary and alternative therapy, patient teaching, discharge planning, and delegation and prioritization to make decisions regarding care.Because nursing is an art and a science, the responsibility of nurses can be challenging.Clinical Decision Making will provide students with actual insight into clinical practice and application of theory to meet those challenges. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very satisfied
I was very satisfied with my purchase. It was shipped and arrived in a timely manner, and was in excellent condition.

1-0 out of 5 stars Many dangerous inaccuracies
I was assigned this book for an online pharmacology course connected with a nursing re-entry program.I have found an unacceptable number of errors in this book and believe it can be dangerous for nursing students to use.The publishers should certainly be required to immediately make an erratum available with corrections.I am only about a third of the way through my program and note these errors:

p79 Exercise on sliding scale insulin dosage
**first answer should be TEN units (7+3) (book says 11)
**second answer should be ELEVEN units (7+4 - not 8...)
**p80 example 3 answer should be .66 ml NOT .75

p82 Exercise on drops per minute should say 60gtt PER ML NOT per hour at top of page. Also section is on gtt/min yet the answers are calling for mL/hr...

p261 Q3 answer should be 0.625 NOT 0.75 as noted in answer key.

p 355 paragraph on "fostering health maintenance" lists "high cholesterol foods" as "...fried foods, fatty desserts, and nuts..." While also saying that cholesterol is an animal product and not found in plants.

The book has excellent well written sections which make these errors look like a sloppy lack of editing and quality control. ... Read more

It is important to be able to describe these principles clearly, particularly in the viva section of the examination. This book provides the reader with all the important graphs, definitions and equations which may be covered in the examination, together with clear and concise explanations of how to present them to the examiner and why they are important. Particular attention is paid to teaching the reader how to draw the graphs. This is an aspect of the examination which can be overlooked but which, if done well, can create a much better impression in the viva situation. Packed full of precise, clear diagrams with well structured explanations, and with all key definitions, derivations and statistics, this is an essential study aid for all FRCA examination candidates. ... Use your knowledge of pharmacology to enhance oral care! Pharmacology and Therapeutics for Dentistry, 6th Edition describes how to evaluate a patient's health and optimize dental treatment by factoring in the drugs they take. It explores the basic fundamentals of pharmacology, special topics such as pain control, fear and anxiety, and oral complications of cancer therapy, and most importantly, the actions of specific drug groups on the human body. Whether you're concerned about the drugs a patient is already taking or the drugs you prescribe for treatment, this book helps you reduce risk and provide effective dental care.

  • An emphasis on the dental applications of pharmacology relates drugs to dental considerations in clinical practice.

  • Dental aspects of many drug classes are expanded to include antibiotics, analgesics, and anesthetics.

  • The Alternative Medicine in Dentistry chapter discusses chemicals used as alternative medicines and assesses their potential benefits and risks.

  • The Nonopioid Analgesics chapter groups together non-opioid analgesics, nonsterioidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and antirheumatic and antigout drugs, making these easier to locate and study.

Product Description

For the past four decades, University College London has offered a renowned course on receptor pharmacology. Originating from this course, the perennially bestselling Textbook of Receptor Pharmacology has presented in-depth coverage of this rapidly expanding area of research. Now in its third edition, the book continues to combine current understanding of classical quantitative pharmacology and drug-receptor interactions with the basics of receptor structure and signal transduction mechanisms, providing an integrated analysis of the mechanisms of drug action at membrane receptors.

Updated chapters reflect recent progress

The hallmark of this popular text is the uniting of four major approaches to the study of receptors: (1) molecular investigation of receptor structure, (2) quantitative functional studies of agonists and antagonists, (3) ligand binding, and (4) signal transduction at the cell membrane. Maintaining the second edition’s focus on cell membrane receptors and the immediate signal transduction events at the membrane, this edition includes fully updated chapters on receptor structure and signal transduction by G-proteins and tyrosine kinases as well as enhancements to the quantitative treatment of drug-receptor interactions. Several chapters contain problems and worked-out solutions, giving students the ability to test their comprehension of the material. Hundreds of diagrams and figures further enhance the text.

A time-saving resource and comprehensive learning tool, Textbook of Receptor Pharmacology, Third Edition carries on the tradition of providing in-depth, up-to-date coverage of this critical area that is both fundamental to the science of pharmacology and on the cutting edge of new drug development.

4-0 out of 5 stars who likes pharm??? not meeeeee!!
Well, i must admit, there is no magic pill in helping you learn pharmacology overnight like i hoped for... but this book makes it a tad bit easier to memorize the important information b/c of its Q&A type setup. I used to to mainly review and found it helpful to brush up on the material i had already learned. If you have the funds, check it out.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick read
This is a good way to quickly test your pharmacology knowledge. The chapters are small, but each touch on the main topics that are frequently found on tests. As a pharmacist, I would like to see a book with more of a pharmacy focus, instead of a medicine one.All in all, a great pocket quiz book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good to reinforce important material.
If you look at any subject area in medical school you will notice that there are some classic examples of things that come up over and over again. You see some topics on regular, class exams, SHELF exams, and the USMLE steps. The DejaReview series reinforces these important topics by a simple question/answer method so you can identify facts that you may not have thought about before. It is particularly useful in courses that require a lot of memorization such as Micro/Pharm/Anatomy/etc.The material in this book will help you pass your class exams (not honor them, just pass with an average score). It will also help you score higher on your standardized exams since those focus on the high yield, classic examples. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Cannabis 101
As a professional in the field for over six years, I highly recommend this excellent introduction and overview to the medicinal benefits and contemporary scientific research on cannabis to date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done.
There are so few books (unfortunately due to severely limited research) that provide a pharmacological view. This book is interesting in that it points out the most common receptor sites aswell as the agonists(stimulate the receptor) and antagonists(block the receptor).Much more research needs to be done but until then this book shines for the information it provides during these dark ages of thought.Good information, wish there was more... ...
