A book to avoid
I have only just come across this title, which rather surprised me since I reckon to have a very comprehensive library of similar titles, which I attempt to keep up to date. However, having purchased the volume, I realised why I had not heard of it. It is a waste of money, and a waste of bookshelf space. Despite the claim of the preface that "This volume provides in-depth coverage of... endangered species through an extensive bibliography and author, title and subject indexes [sic].", it does nothing of the sort. It is difficult to imagine how a publisher could commit to print a book, which is simply a bibliography, nothing more, nothing less, which is so incompetent. The very first page shows a major failing: the titles are listed alphabetically -- a sensible and normal procedure -- but it is not normal or sensible to include the indefinite and definite articles in the index -- consequently there are several pages of books which, because the title begins with 'The' are extremely difficult to find. I presume this bibliography was generated from a computerised library data base -- how else explain the inclusion such titles as "Husbands, an Endangered species, by Lucille Lavender, 1982? The titles relating to endangered species are a pretty random selection. -- some are very detailed, dealing with a single species, but others of major importance, such as various IUCN publications are completely omitted. And the indexes [sic] are obviously of dubious value, when Jane Thornback's work is listed, but her name does not appear in the index. There are many more mistakes of omission and commission, but these few will do to demonstrate its failings. Six people are credited as being involved editorially in some way or other -- they should be ashamed of publishing a volume as poorly edited as this. Since I have published various books and papers on this subject, I am clearly biased, but nonetheless, I feel a word of warning is needed concerning a book as poorly researched as the present volume.

EXCELLENT BOOK TO MAINTAIN WEIGHT LOSS
I bought this book recently.I have learnt a lot about Glycemic Index and how to eat the right foods and which foods fill you up without wanting to eat a lot.Excellent book and everyone should read it.I have suggested this book to all my friends who want to eat healthy foods and keep up their energy.

Great book
For the first time in my life I have lost weight and managed to keep it off using this book. 15 pounds and counting. The best part is that I don't feel hungry or cranky. I have recommended this book to friends and relatives.

Dry, boring and flavorless....
This book was really hard to choke down. I've lost 120 pounds by counting calories (and kept it off for 1 1/2 years thank you) and was trying to find new ways to "shake up" my diet without excluding entire food groups the way Atkins does. But I didn't want to starve on a low-fat diets either. So I thought the G-Index diet sounded like a good idea. But after reading the book, inspecting the 21-day suggested meal plan, and absorbing the recipes I've come to a conclusion.This diet is just a really low fat, low calorie diet in disguise! On the GI diet you are allowed to eat 100% whole grain breads, and you can't have dried fruits, bananas, carrots or popcorn. (But then later the author goes on to explain you actually CAN have those foods in small quantities.) If you strip away the very small handful of high glycemic foods you can't eat, you simply have a very low fat/low calorie diet.

And, the diet seems incredibly strict. For example, one lunch meal that was suggested reads: 4 Rye crackers, 1/2 a cup of cottage cheese, 1 cup bell pepper strips and a cup of cantaloupe.One typical breakfast reads: 1 slice of bread, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1/2 cup orange juice & 1/2 cup of skim milk. I don't know about you but I'd STARVE on that!?

I didn't like the guy's boring *SNORE* writing style and by the end of it, I didn't believe in what he was telling me. It left me feeling very skeptical. The reason for the two stars was because I'm sure if you followed the plan you'd lose weight. I mean, who wouldn't?? He has a grown man on an 1,800 calorie diet!

a great book

Great for identification and quick reference.
The Baensch Photo Index 1-5 is one of the most recent additions to the fine series of Baensch aquarium books.

Excellent from a technical perspective (a clean, easty-to-follow layout with stunning photography) the book really excells because of the huge amount of information it packs into a small space. It is ideally suited to the task of fish identification, although the sheer number of species listed may make this a daunting task for the beginning hobbist.

Potential buyers should note however that the amount of written information in this book is not as extensive as other volumes. Rather than a deficiency, this has to be viewed as a necessary evil, as the book's aim is to present as much as it can while remaining portable. Even so, the information listed is nothing to scoff at.

This book has become my most used reference source and I highly recommend it to beginner and advanced aquarists alike.

Review of Baensch Aquarium Atlas Photo Index Vols 1-5
Stunning. I have never seen so may fish photographs in one book, althoughinformation on each species pictured is limited to a few symbolsand words, these are functional and in most cases all that is required.Words however are not this books main purpose easy access to visualinformation is.

For the catfish keeper : 146 catfish pages with usually 6photograph thumbnails per page = approximately 846 pictures. I didn't countthem but I think it's fair to say that's over 500 species all withexcellent photographs.

Many rare and unidentified or described speciesappear alongside aquarium mainstays. This is applicable to all types offreshwater fish which are featured in equal volume.

This book is one bigindex for the other 5 volumes, but what an index! About 1/3 of the wholebook is a common, current and old scientific name index covering all fivesvolumes and the photo index itself. Now that's useful!

This is a checklist of vascular species found in Texas. It isn't all inclusive and some items might be out of date, but it sure helps find synonyms when you might not have access to the internet.Because it lists several synonyms if can help correct names from several authors.
