5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!!
im really big into animal rights so it wasnt much of a stretch for me to see this for sale and to purchase it immediately. i also have been studying animal nutrition for a few years now and finally felt it was time to read what others had come up with. this book was great! very interesting... keeps you reading on further.. the whole nine yards...

my only negitive comment is that even in its THIRD edition it still had an insane amount of errors.. this of course is the job of the publishing company and yet they failed to fix them. hopefully in the next edition someone will review the book a little more closely to fix all of them. ill keep my fingers crossed.

i would also love to see an updated list of "safe" or proper kibble diets.. there are a lot that have come to the market recently and i feel the readers should be informed of them as well.

this is a MUST read!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reading for involved pet parents
what a book. we have read labels & tried to be informed pet parents for years but, this book lives up to its name shocking facts, it's true.So much we didn't know or have never even given a thought to. thanks to the author for doing all the research to help other owners make better decisions in regards to their pet's care.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stick to the kids' books.
I call complete BS on Ann M. Martin. This book is a bunch of BALONEY. She bases NONE of her conjectures on any facts what-so-ever, just hearsay and personal opinion. It's sensational crap. She needs to stick to writing children's books and stop using these scare-tactics and misinformation to make a name for herself. Veterinarians sell dog carcasses to dog food companies? PUH-LEASE. ... Product Description
Marion Nestle, acclaimed author of Food Politics, now tells the gripping story of how, in early 2007, a few telephone calls about sick cats set off the largest recall of consumer products in U.S. history and an international crisis over the safety of imported goods ranging from food to toothpaste, tires, and toys. Nestle follows the trail of tainted pet food ingredients back to their source in China and along the supply chain to their introduction into feed for pigs, chickens, and fish in the United States, Canada, and other countries throughout the world. What begins as a problem "merely" for cats and dogs soon becomes an issue of tremendous concern to everyone. Nestle uncovers unexpected connections among the food supplies for pets, farm animals, and people and identifies glaring gaps in the global oversight of food safety. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars That's why we feed RAW to our dogs
This books tells you whats wrong with our system.Dog food you buy these days is full of "by-product" and filler. What is by-product? You certainly cant purchase by-products in the grocery store! We have been feeding our dogs RAW for 8 years and this is why. Dogs come from the wolf. The wolf doesn't "cook" his food in the wild.He kills it and eats it RAW.Thanks to our breeder, she educated us on the RAW diet. She has been feeding RAW for over 25 years. The Vet's don't care for it because they aren't taught the RAW diet in college. After all, they have dog food companies coming into their office to promote their food and yes, the Vet gets a kick back.My niece is a Vet Tech. She wasnt taught RAW in school but has since started to study RAW and has totally changed her outlook on dry and wet dog food coming from these horrible companies. These companies are poisoning/killing the animals. Our dogs are healthy, no skin issues, no ear issues and no allergies.Their coats are silky and their eyes are bright and clear. They eat RAW chicken, RAW hamburger, RAW beef liver, RAW bones, RAW eggs (shell and all), alot of veggies and yes, yogurt and cottage cheese along with their vitamins. They eat nice and slow unlike how a dry food dog eats.No bloat for our boys because there isn't a bunch of dry food sitting in their stomach being blow up with their stomach liquids. On the wk-ends they get RAW, meaty beef bones. You always hear never give a dog a chicken bone, that's because when a bone is COOKED, all the vitamins and minerals are cooked away therefore, the bone splinters. A RAW bone is HARD, CRUNCHY and GREAT for cleaning their teeth.Their teeth are white and clean. I hope you buy this book and hear what its telling you.I hope you educated yourself on a RAW diet. Any books by Ian Billinghurst and Wendy Volhard will show you the way to feeding RAW.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lindsay's review
An eye-opening novel about weaknesses in the food industry and the organizations we count on to regulate food safety.A great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Food Beware
The full title's second part, "The Chihuahua in the Coal Mine" was the underlying point of this non-fiction story. I had not followed the pet food recall too much when it happened since I was in school but this book goes back and starts from the very beginning to streamline the timeline of the incident.

The take away is that even if you do not have pets or don't care about pets or whatever, that this is just the beginning of food issues as was later seen with melamine tainted baby food, chocolate, etc, allow these latter points are not discussed in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! This book will change you.
Not only did this book change the way I look at the pet food supply system, it gave me an awareness of the politics of pet and human food and how not being aware can cost you and your family their lives. The FDA is behind the 8-ball and seems to only be able to given watered down warnings AFTER a great deal of damage and deaths have happened. Be aware and make your own choices to minimize risk. When something happens in the food system, it happens fast. You may not get a second chance to make better choices.

This book will give you the awareness and will help you make better choices now before tragedy hits you, your family, or your pets. It is easy reading and is so interesting and fast-paced that you will be on the edge of your seat. I finished it within a few days and normally it takes much longer for me to not get distracted with a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the scoop on melamine, China, and the FDA
This book provides a knowledgeable and well-written examination of the scandal resulting from melamine contamination of U.S. pet food by Chinese processors. The author provides much behind-the-scenes insight, and the gaps are as informative as what is known, because they result from secrecy on the part of industry and government in both the U.S. and China. It's an excellent primer, and a good context for understanding how melamine could subsequently kill and sicken tens of thousands of Chinese infants. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars First Rate, Practical Advice That Works !
I have been a customer of Halo for a few years, endorsement enough for me to buy this fabulous guide.
My dogs have responded to the diet, treats, exercises and general advise.Author is not afraid to discuss the pros and cons of controversial issues, which I appreciate.A ton of canine advice books on the market and not many have helped me much until now!Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars by-products are NOT evil!
i'm so glad i didn't actually buy this book, and read a few pages online via amazons look inside this book option. i hit "surprise me" and it brought me to page 14, which discussed by-products. the authors definition of by-products is completely outdated! by-products in pet food are not beaks, feet, feathers, fecal matter, and the like. that's the definition of days gone by. the new definition of by-products is heart, liver, kidneys, etc- organ meats. meats that are vital to the survival of your pet. talk to any veterinary nutritionist and they'll tell you the same. i wouldn't trust any of the other content in this book with my pet after reading that. ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Whole Pet Diet Makes A Whole Lot of Sense
The Whole Pet Diet: Eight Weeks to Great Health for Dogs and Cats

I don't know Andi Brown's medical training but from an animal care perspective, her rationale makes sense.

She suggests that your pet's health is directly related to their diet; it either kills or cures them.

Beyond diet, she puts forth a whole step by step 8 week care plan that includes supplements of vitamins and herbs and EFAs as well as exercise, quality play time and even massage. She includes a form for you to record detailed indicators of your pet's health at the start and several times during the 8 week treatment plan.

Ms Brown's writing style is easy to digest without being too simplistic. She doesn't point fingers just makes the case for removing toxins and BHT, meat bi-products and grains from your cats' and dogs' diets and instead offering real meats and PH-balanced supplements, homemade or otherwise. She also suggests stopping dangerous flea and tick removal treatments and trying natural options such as garlic in one form or another. The book must be read and followed carefully as many suggestions come with specific instructions.

Whether her included miracle stories are benchmarks for your own pet's improvements or just anecdotal,
the thinking behind her plan seems to be based on the holistic animal care traditions of Dr. Pitcairn and others.

Andi Brown owns Halo Pet Foods with Ellen Degeneres.

2-0 out of 5 stars Written by director of Halo-claims to cure cancer and blindness with Halo pet food
This book does have some relevant information. However, it is written by the director of Halo pet food and basically sells their products throughout the pages. Also, on page 18 the author claims to have cured a dog's cancer and blindness with a specific pet food Halo sells.Unbelievable!!There are more informative books out there that aren't telling you to buy a specific product the author is selling. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I'm a dog lover
I make my schnoodles food and have been doing it for almost 3 years now.I was looking for a new kibble recipe and was disappointed that this book did not have one.Other than that, it was pretty informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative reading
This book has loads of information about what to feed your pet and what not to feed them. Many things I already knew.Lots of recipes for home food and good info on raw feeding.I would recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Covers all bases
I checked many books out from the library to research pet nutritional information. This was by far the best.It really does cover all the bases. It is well written and explains the digestive tract of our cats and dogs in an interesting manner and processed foods, homemade and raw diets are covered. Not only does it have nutritional information and recipes for cats and dogs, but it also covers recipes for senior pets and other special needs such as obesity, allergies, heart and kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis and liver disease. It has simple, but nutritional recipes for treats.Really, it has everything. The only negative thing is that it is paperback.I think it would have been better published in hardback because it is one of those books that I want to keep around for a long time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pet Food Cookbook
It didn't suit my needs at all.It was different from the online video I seen on a website. It's just taking up space in my recipes drawer, but at $15 + I hate to throw it away.Maybe someday I will use it, but I doubt it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun for the home cook but needs improvement
If you're cooking for your dog or cat and want to move on beyond the basic boiled rice and chicken, this is the cookbook for you.

I'll primarily comment on the dog food recipes because that's why I got it... so can't really say anything about the cat food portion.

First, the recipes are fun because they include a variety of meats, grains, ingredients. If you don't like cooking, this book is *NOT* for you.I've enjoyed making the meatballs and the chicken soup/stew.The book also includes recipes for making your own dry food (kibbles), which many other cookbooks lack.

But with all that said, sometimes the "Dr. Kevin says" little box inserts are not very helpful... and have a "duh!" factor.I wish the vet had more scientific/medical approach to his advice.

Also, my second beef with this book is the lack of nutritional information. For dog owners who are serious about adding/replacing their pet's food with homecooked meals, nutritional analysis is crucial... as it's easy to under or over-compensate for needed vitamins and supplements including calcium/phosphorus (especially the ratio). ((For more on nutritional needs, I would highly recommend Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats))

Lastly, since many dogs are overweight (which has a host of health-related issues) it would have been nice to have the calorie information as it's difficult to gauge how much to feed your dog based on their weight. The author simply tells you how many portions/servings a recipe makes but that's not helpful if your dog should get 200 cals (as my Maltese) vs 300 cals or whatever. Those extra calories are crucial to know especially for owners of tiny dogs. I've found cookbooks that tell you calories per weight (not cup) are the most helpful.

As for the taste of the food, both my dogs loved what I've tried (but how can you go wrong with meat and cheese together?)My maltese, Lucy, tends to be a finicky eater but she has scarfed down every homemade meal I've ever made. She's sometimes picky about commercial dog food (wet or dry -- Natural Balance, Wellness, Solid Gold)

Edited to Add: I want to quickly address the other reviewer who was concerned about corn in some recipes. There aren't many of them and if corn bothers you so much, simply omit. But since corn is sweet, it can definitely help palatability for really picky dogs. Also, corn itself is not a bad food.If it doesn't get digested, it can still help move their bowels. But if you find that your dog likes food with corn, simply toss it in the food processor so they can get some of the nutritional benefits (and you won't have to see entire kernels in their poop).Fruits and veggies must be cooked long enough so it's easier to digest for them.

All in all, I would recommend this book with slight reservations and give it a solid 3.5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Natural Pet food Cookbook.
I like the recipes in this book. Some of them look good enough for even humans to eat.

3-0 out of 5 stars difficult to implement
I bought this book to be able to make more wholesome foods for my beloved beagle. But the recipes are so hard to do and so difficult to get some of the ingredients and so costly that I just can't do it.Maybe someday, maybe.I had hoped it would be easier than it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Looks alot like my cookbooks.
Cute little cookbook.Alot of the recipes look like recipes I now make.Made me feel better about his not eating dog food. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Seriously lacking
If the reader is interested in learning about the pet food industry, this book will meet the need. If the reader is interested in learning on how to make homemade food to meet the nutritional needs of their pet, steer clear of this book - it has many flaws and omissions about nutrition.

1-0 out of 5 stars good intentions, dangerous advice
Anything to increase peoples awareness of how flawed the commercial pet food industry is, and to encourage people to feed their pets real food of which they have full contol, is an important and needed endeavor.I loved the title, which was a take off of Fast Food Nation, a great eyeopening book. However, one piece of dangerous advice, and other inaccurate information has prompted me to write my first book review in order to prevent people who are new to this arena from buying this book and doing potential harm to their pets (people who are old hands at making food for their pets will easily pick up these flaws, and hopefully not give this book to newbies).

On page 134 it is recommended to limit water intake to pets with diarrhea. Anyone who has had to take care of puppies with parvo virus ( a deadly virus which causes diffuse watery diarrhea) would know this would be one way to quicken the demise of these patients.A common misconception is that "watery things" like canned foodor water itself causes diarrhea or soft stool. It was disheartening to see this comment, as these poor animals who already have a fluid deficit from abnormal watery stools (diarrhea) need MORE water, not less.Of course they also need help finding the cause then getting some help for the problem.

Other more minor things: the first four recipes listed for dogs (which are classified as ones to be used asmain/daily) are seriouly lacking in calcuim, not to mention other nutrients. The author does touch on calcium/phosphorous, andvitamns/mineralsin other areas in the book, but for someone using the book as a reference before reading it cover to cover would not know this. Her arguments against fresh/uncooked(raw) diets is that they are "ick"y, she has personal reservations about the people that feed this way (they "are a bit much" ),and feels that fresh feeding is too complcated and very strict, which actually couldn't be further from the truth. Most anti-fresh/raw proponents feel that those diets aren't strict enough.

For people just starting out, please refer to a book that is tried and true, and has stood the test of time, Dr Richard Pitcairns , which is carried on Amazon:

[...]

The new Dr. Michael Fox book, Not Fit For A Dog, is a great current synopsis of the latest pet food crisis, including all the most recent recalls.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Primer
Pet Food Nation is a quick and easy read and a good primer to get you thinking about your pet's nutrition and diet.

The book is divided into three general parts. The first part talks about the history and the state of the pet food industry. The second part goes into your pet's general nutritional requirements and commercial food (and it's ingredients) versus home cooked food. The third part discusses nutritional requirements for different breeds (very general), provides some sample recipes (about a dozen each, for cats and dogs) and lists different vitamins and minerals and their sources, functions and the results of deficiency and excess.

The book also contains a lot of factoids, questions and answers (FAQ style) and debunks some popular pet food/nutrition myths.I'd recommend this book to start you out in your pet nutrition research, but you'd probably want to read additional books for more in-depth information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book to read!
This is a good book to read to gain some more insight into feeding your pets homemade food.It has many interesting ideas in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information
There is so much out there on this diet if can be overwhelming. This book gives an easy and comfortable approach to getting started. You have to just find our what works for you.My dogs LOVE the diet.My 2yo German Shepherd could care less about food and was too skinny until I started him on this diet.My 12yo Golden Retriever is loosing those extra LBS. and has new energy and is acting much younger than his 12 years.I talk to anyone who will listen about this diet.....I believe in it that much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Easy to Follow
This is the perfect starter book when switching to raw foods for your dog.She explains everything in simple to understand and follow methods.I would highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Nuts and Bolts of Raw Feeding
I talk with a lot of clients about switching their dogs to raw. This is the perfect book to help people with the switch. It's written in no-nonsense terms and is easy to read. Kudos to the author. I think the resources at the back of the book are terrific. Many don't know where to start and this book gives a person many ideas.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy read
I have fed raw for over 15 years but I wanted to see what the author had to say as the book was recommended on one of the lists I subscribe too.Since I have fed raw for a long time I did not nor did I expect to learn anything new. However for a new person it may take some of the worry out of feeding this way.
My dogs are all very healthy.Even the ones that were switched over late in their life lived to a ripe old age of 13 or more and several to 19.
The biggest problem has been that most vets do not know the benefits of a fresh food diet and try to discourage feeding this way.
I hope people use common sense in this regard. Not only is this a healthier way of feeding pets but its cheaper as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and simple to prepare receipts!
The ingredients are easy to find in any shop and everything is well balanced. The portions are defined according to dog's weight and they can be cooked at large and stored in the freezer. What I like the most are the directions in which proportion the homemade food should be mixed with commercial dry food. I don't want to feed my dog solely with homemade food but to give him a better taste and more variety.

5-0 out of 5 stars More please!
I am writing for my dogs who have yet to master the keyboard."The food is yummy and quick to fix.I know when it is being made and sit patiently while it cools. Our friend, Kitty, is now demanding her share."
As for me, this is a lot cheaper than canned food and I know what is in it.I can make stew in the time it takes to fix breakfast.Praises to the folks who put this information together for me and my doggie family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the recipes. The dogs love them more.
I think cooking for your dogs is a great way to make sure they are getting quality food. It is still important for them to eat dry dog food, but if you want to add something extra to their diet, don't buy the canned stuff or even the the stuff that looks like real food in the commercials. When you read the ingredients for those things, you'll see they are terrible! Not only does this book have recipes for natural, wholesome softfood, but it also has recipes for snacks/treats.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book if you want to cook for your dog
I recently adopted a dog and was immediately drawn to this book.I love to cook so cooking for my dog seemed like a natural progression. This book impressed me for a number of reasons.First, I appreciated the sheer variety of recipes. It offers main dishes, treats, desserts, sauces and more.Even if you do not plan on feeding your dog 100% homemade food there are lots of great things you can make as special treats.I also appreciated that she gave a lot of information about portion size based on dog weight, freezing the food for later use, and serving it with dog food.I realize the latter may not appeal to everyone but is great if you want to do a mix of store-bought and homemade food.

There are a couple of things worth noting with this book. The first is that many of these recipes are not the quick and easy variety and will take some time.If you're looking for something you can throw together in less than 20 minutes this may not be the book for you. However, as I mention above, so many recipes can be frozen that it's easy to double them on a weekend and stash for later.

It also isn't extremely thorough about the nutritional aspect. You don't get much information about the types of nutrients dogs need or in what amounts. The author also recommends improvising based on your dog's likes and dislikes, but doesn't give a chart about what is and isn't safe to make for your dog.Because of this, I will likely be using this cookbook in addition to a more comprehensive one on animal nutrition. However, I will say that so far my dog has really enjoyed the banana cookies and the catfish chowder. He was never a member of the clean plate club until I mixed the latter in with his kibble.

Despite these nits I still really enjoy this book.It contains such a variety of recipes that I know I will enjoy making them for my dog.

3-0 out of 5 stars WATCH OUT FOR RAISINS
Some of the recipes in this book call for raisins. RAISINS AND GRAPES CAN CAUSE KIDNEY FAILURE IN DOGS. So skip the raisins when making these recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars My dog loves this food!
I borrowed this book from a friend and eventually picked up a copy for myself. I was thoroughly disgusted by the amount of chemical and waste additives in store brand dog foods. When I started preparing the recipes from Woofing it Down my lab became more energetic, his fur coat became shinier and healthier, and his excitement for dinner time elevated greatly. I am incredibly surprised with the ease and inexpensive nature of preparing food for my dog at home. I was also surprised at the variety of foods dogs could eat. The myriad of different foods and recipes fit easily within my grocery shopping list and budget. I would recommend this to any pet owner who wants to make a positive change in their animals' diet and overall health. Thanks in advance! I am purchasing a copy of this book because I sincerely want to cook meals for my animal at home. Dog food in the store is disgusting and I have been told this can save tons of cash when buying foods for my family and pet at the same time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Doggie Cookbook
My children begged and begged for a dog and I decided to cave in and buy a puppy for them last Christmas. I was shocked by the cost of vaccinations, treatment, toys, and dog food. My veterinarian had this book in her office and suggested that we purchase a copy. I was skeptical about preparing my dog food because I assumed it would be time consuming and may not offer all of the nutrients that a growing puppy needs. The book was inexpensive and I am very happy we purchased it because now I can cook easy, healthy meals for the puppy while provide all of the essential nutritional elements required for growth and development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved me money on overpriced dog food
We had already started looking for dog food alternatives for several reasons. The only processed dog foods that our veterinarian recommended were very expensive. Sometimes we went to the pet store and they didn't even have the economy bags of food so we would end up buying very small bags with exceedingly high price per ounce costs. My wife and I were unsure about what types of food is safe for our dog so we didn't know if preparing food would be efficient and safe. This book is an excellent guide and it helped us save tons of cash on trashy, overly expensive store brand dog foods.

1-0 out of 5 stars The book comes across as a non-expert's unfounded tirade against an imagined enemywithout proof or intelligent comment
I was greatly disappointed in this book. I expected to find intelligent and clearly laid out facts about what various dog foods contain, what these ingredients do to my dog and rationale on what to feed them to avoid the bad substances which I am sure can be found in most dogs foods.

While the intent behind this book appeared to be commendable the contents are completely unfounded and unresearched and not to mention badly written.

The author has clearly not researched the assertions made in her book and has not managed to prove even one. There are no references to her claims. For instance the claims that dog foods contain contaminants like pentobarbital, colourants and endotoxins. There are also no references for the claims about what these substances actually do.

In reading something like this I would like to see very specific scientific references that show the truth of what the author is stating. The best the author could come up with was a quote from CNN about the addition of melamine to pet food. In fact the CNN reporter said "Somebody may have added melamine...".

Many of the author's statements seem without a point to them. There is (allegedly) cereal grain and gluten added to pet food but at no point is the reason why this is such a bad thing ever stated. Furthermore there is nothing listing the actual ingredients in the dog foods that the author apparently investigated and no where does the part of dog food that is good come to light.

Lastly, I thought that the list of recipes would be helpful even if the text was not. I was surprised, though, to find recipes containing cheese and recipes for icecream containing only sugary ingredients. The recipes go against claims about not giving your dog too much salt as there is in cheese (not to mention how highly processed supermarket cheese is) and the previous litany against the sugars added to dog food.

I suppose I should not be surprised because a look at the author's background reveals that she is not a professional health practitioner of any sort but rather a trainer and dog owner only. Clearly she does not have the background to write this sort of content.

About the writing:

The writing is immature and has not been edited. In places the author lapses into incomplete sentences, particularly in list like the list of foods to avoid. "This causes dogs intestinal gas - avoid it" was used several times in that particular list.

Unfortunately the book was particularly hard to read because of the lack of formatting. Paragraphs were not separated properly. Chapters are not started on their own pages and there is no table of contents. While these are the problems plaguing the eBook industry as a whole I take exception to paying for a book that has not been properly formatted. If a publisher were to release a book like in print would you agree to pay for it? I think not.

The book comes across as a non-expert's unfounded tirade against an imagined enemy without a shred of proof or even intelligent comment. Rather spend your money and time on another book, preferably with professional background.

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy read however the recipes do not follow the authors guidelines for a balanced diet
Got this book on my kindle and read it in about 2 hours. Its an easy read and gives a general view over what a dogs diet should comprise of. Author writes a very convincing argument for home cooked dog diets versus commercial dog food. Love the lists in the back of the book. However the recipes (the reason I bought the book) did not follow the 50% meat 30% veggie 30% grain rule. Most of the recipes are unbalanced. Since they are unbalanced you cant feed your dog them everyday.Following the recipe's (in my case with 3 chihuahuas) amount will yield quite a few unhealthy meals. What would I do with all that excess? So all the book provided me was with recipes for occasional treats and tasty occasional meals.

IT DID provide a background in how to balance the diet however the author of this book is not a board certified veterinary nutritionist so who knows how accurate the information is. She bases her 50:30:30 ratio (with other once or twiceweek extras) on experience as a dog trainer, breeder and pet owner. In my opinion her advice sounds good but there really the only way to know is to buy another book from a board certified veterinary nutritionist to find out! I would recommend to skip this book unless you want a few treat recipes and get a book written by a someone who is certified to write about dog's dietary needs. ... Read more

Don't be surprised if To Your Dog's Health! makes you apologize to Fido or Fifi for all the years you just opened up any old can or bag of food, put it in a bowl, and left it for the day. And then you get upset, maybe even mad, when you got home from work, tired and maybe a little cranky, only to discover your pet hadn't touched its food.

4-0 out of 5 stars To Your Dog's Health!
I found To Your Dog's Health! to be both helpful and enlightening. This book is a great resource for dog owners.

With chapter titles like All Foods Are Not Created Equal and Be a Top Chef for Your Dog, author Mark Poveromo informs the reader on how to give their dog the best nutrition possible. Formerly a teacher, Mark is now an expert on animal nutrition as well as the owner of a dog and cat food store.

He is a holistic practitioner and has his own dogs on raw food diets as well as cooking for them at home himself. His own chocolate lab lived to be 17 years old.
There are healthy recipes included within the book as well as brands Mark recommends. He gives advice on picky eaters and on how to transition your dog from the food he is currently eating to a different diet.
He discusses several interesting topics including dogs with cancer and what foods help prevent it, as well as what foods they should be eating once, heaven forbid, they are diagnosed with the disease. Mark also tells you what to look for when you are reading labels.
I liked that there is a photo included at the start of each chapter. I thought that was a nice touch.

I will definitely be making sure that I am label reading when purchasing food and treats for my own furbaby, Diego. This book has been an eye opener when it comes to my dog's eating habits and the food that I chose to give him.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable information every dog owner should know
Mark does a great job clearly outlining the health needs of dogs (and cats) in this book. He walks through the different types of nutrition such as grocery store kibble, holistic foods, home cooking, and raw. He gives great advice and recipes for home cooked meals, meals for dogs with kidney disease or cancer, and what to look for in kibble.

His one chapter on raw feeding was a bit of a disappointment compared to the amount of time he spent on other subjects. While he went into great detail on kibble, home cooking for your dog, supplements to use, recipes, and things to keep in mind for certain health issues, he spent only one chapter on actual raw feeding and did not discuss how to do it yourself. He mentioned that there are good raw food manufacturers, but did not discuss how to balance your dog's meals if you don't buy a prepackaged raw diet. I would have liked it if he went into more detail in some areas, including this one. I found this lack of information especially odd in light of the last paragraph of the chapter on raw feeding where Mark Poveromo said, "For the record, I have been feeding my pets a raw diet for about seven years now, and have had tremendous success."

However, there was a wealth of information about vitamins, enzymes, carbohydrates, and vegetables, that I still came away learning a lot. Based on this information, I will try changing up our dogs' diet a bit, but I will probably also consult some other raw diet resources before making a final decision.

I was delightfully surprised that he wrote a chapter about vaccines and other treatments. I must say I found his thoughts on that subject well balanced and helpful.

I do recommend this book for a quick, easy to read overview of dog nutrition. In fact, despite my disappointment with the raw food chapter, I found enough good information in the book, that I am keeping it on my shelf to read again. There are various facts in this book that more pet owners, and vets, need to know. One such fact is that the protein in most kibble is from rendering facilities. These facilities take leftover animal pieces (meat, fat, blood, bone, and feather) and render them down to be included in kibble. These are the animal pieces that are not sold in grocery stores because they are not fit for consumption! And because of this poor protein quality, we are seeing increased incidents of health issues in our pets.

Just like humans, our pets are what they eat, and we owe it to them to make sure we give them the best nutrition possible.

I received this book free from The Online Publicist. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Information
I have one dog with food issues/allergies and another who is getting older and has to watch his weight. I found the book to be very helpful in knowing what to look for in dog food and to make an educated decision on what to feed my dogs. Mark takes a more holistic approach to feeding and we have found that is what works for our guys here too. There is information on what to look for in a dog food, feeding a raw diet, feeding a dog with cancer or kidney disease and some information on vaccines and supplements. Each chapter in the book also has a cute paw print with a tip inside it. It is a very interesting book to read especially after all the pet food recalls in recent years. The book was easy to read and understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars My dogs have never looked so good
I had just gotten a new boxer puppy to be a companion for my 10 year old boxer, and if it weren't for Mark and his book I wouldn't have been able to start the puppy off the right way. When I first got the puppy he was undernurished [the breeder had the puppy weened off the mother's milk at four weeks old and started him on dry commercial food], and after talking to Mark and reading his book, he's gained four pounds. Even our ten year old has slimmed down and doesn't have breathing problems any more [no more snoring!], all because of the raw diet. I would absolutely recommend Mark's book to anyone whether they're first starting out with a pup [or a kitten] or if they have a senior; Mark's advice covers all ages.

1-0 out of 5 stars Inaccurate Information
I was very disappointed with this book in general. I am a veterinary technician by profession and have read books and scientific literature on the topic of canine and feline nutrition and this one met very few of my expectations. None of his information was substantiated and he gave faulty information on some things other than nutrition. For example: He discusses on page 33 the 'medical community's' suggestion of the effectiveness of the Lyme Vaccine and compared it to the spirochetal bacterium syphiis and notes how no cure yet exists for syphilis. Last I checked, a shot of Pen G took care of that, even the writers of the TV show House know that. How can I trust the rest of his information which he has no research or proof of if he can't get facts like that straight? Also, he discussed the raw diet and compared the pros and the cons. He very blatantly states his support of the raw diet (which is fine) but does a very poor job of discussing the cons of the diet. What you get out of it, there are good dog foods and not so good dogs foods. You can read that on someone's blog for free. I do not recommend reading this book. ... Read more

When you have Vet approved dog meals you would think it would be something your dog would eat daily.I consider this book as something of a joke and a rip.......

5-0 out of 5 stars YUMMY FOR OUR TUMMY
This is a wonderful book. The knowledge it gives on what a dog really needs for a well balanced diet is great. It even giveS the amount of calories a dog should have per day. You can't get that in can dog food. The ingredients in each recipe can be calculated for calorie content. This enables you to regulate the pets weight as well as have a well balanced and heathly meal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Food for Dogs Review
I like this book very much; the recipes are easy and not too expensive...and, best of all, my dog loves the food!I believe he is getting a higher quality of nutrition than commercial food (and no additives!)

4-0 out of 5 stars More educational than most, but still could use more nutrition info
I love to cook and I love my dog so I knew it was only a matter of time before I cooked for him as well.As soon as I knew I wanted to cook for my dog I picked up just about every book on the subject. One of the things that I have been most disapointed in is the lack of guidance from most books in creating a balanced diet for your dog.Even though they list recipes for things that sound like main meals for your dog's diet they don't tell you much about how balanced the meals are or whether they are appropriate to eat everyday.

While this book isn't exhuastive in its nutritional information, it is better than most.It has good basic information like how to deal with issues of animal weight, healthy herbs for dogs, and food dangers.Since I am a newbie to cooking for animals all this information was interesting to me and appreciated.I also appreciated the reference section which directed me to books like Canine Nutrition and Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. After reading the reference section I now have plans to read both of those books.

On the plus side, this book does contain interesting and fun recipes, many of which I have not seen in other animal cookbooks.I am especially excited to make the Bow-Wow Brownies as a special treat. However, if these are not up your alley know that you can find treats, meaty meals, fish and fowl, vegetarian meals, special occasion meals, and meals for special diets all in this book. Thus if whether you're only looking for meals or treats or everything in between you are sure to find a lot of what you're looking for.

The bottom line is that this book's strengths lie in the variety of recipes and good beginner nutritional info, that is MUCH better than most cookbooks for dogs. However, if your aim in cooking for your dog is to create a healthy balanced diet that will help your dog thrive, you will probably want to check out more detailed and scientifically backed dog nutrition books before starting the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye-opening and informative!
Catherine O'Driscoll writes, "According to Dr. Dodds, the vaccines we give to our dogs in the belief that we are protecting them, could in fact be damaging them by causing their own bodies to self-destruct."This statement sums up very well othe main message of O'Driscoll's book "Shock to the System: The facts about animal vaccination, pet food and how to keep your pets healthy."It is a well-known fact now that vaccines can have a nasty effect on humans, and now our beloved pets, including autoimmune diseases (diseases where the immune system attacks the body; like leukaemia. And according to Dr. Dodds, autoimmune disease could be brought on by any of the following: a virus, vaccine, sex hormones, or stress.Vaccines can also cause allergic reactions, even paralysis.Shocked at all of her findings, which were triggered by the loss of two of her own dogs shortly after vaccinations, O'Driscoll and her ex-husband set out to find out why veterinarians would continue to promote annual shots that were potentially harmful--even deadly--to the animals.

Shortly thereafter, they founded the Canine Health Concern, an organization that would be responsible for checking out the causes of good and bad health of dogs.Their feeling was that if the research were done by dog lovers instead of doctors (who O'Driscoll says are educated in a system that relies on commerce for funding), the results would be much more accurate.

Shock to the System is a detailed account of their findings, focusing on vaccines, what the vaccines are immunizing dogs against, and even a chapter on food. This book is very compelling and informative. It was an eye-opener, truly! The statistics were shocking and compelling. One of the best things about this book is the research that went into it.Also the fact that it was written by a British woman--as an American, it's good to see that the quest to keep our pets safe and healthy is a universal one.

5-0 out of 5 stars everyone who loves their pets should read this
excellent book.Every pet owner who cares about their pets should read this book and inform themselves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shock to the System by Catherine O'Driscoll
Most interesting book regarding vaccines, pet food, etc. This British author has done much research, but tends to agree that not all dogs and cats are suited to a raw diet (which I feed), but points out that some do better on cooked or even dry food depending upon their age or circumstances. She has done extensive research on diseases and vaccines which I found most informative.A lot of technical reading and much to absorb.

5-0 out of 5 stars The researchers SHOULD BE INDEPENDENT from big money
This is not the first book of this type I have read about vaccines, how awful pet food really is and alternative ways to keep your pet healthy. This book is very informative and has articles that relate to what I have found in other books by different authors, so there is a real problem in the pet food industry as well as with the vaccines and drug industry. Driscoll even gets into historical psychological facts about humans to show a correlation between human and animal side affect from drugs, vaccines, poor food andthat modern medicine is not what it is cracked up to be. I have seen first hand what modern medicine can do to cats. I rescue, break up colonies andadopt them out. I have seen Revolution give cats seizures after only a couple day, high fevers for now reason appear after about two weeks for no reason. One of my cats has a burn from where I put the Revolution. This is a pesticide, I knew this, but I am having a really bad time with ear mites and was at my wits end. I have not used conventional anything on my cats in eight years and regret even this time. Revolution is a suppose to be safe and the conventional vet I bought it from thought I was a fool for waiting so long to use it. My cats are indoor only, but the rescues pose a problem sometimes and with all black cats I missed the ear mites in one. I pay very close attention to my cats and this is why I caught the problems. Most people put Revolution and their cat or dog and send them out the door. And, especially a cat, if it does not come home for a few big days no big deal. They have no idea the animal could have been suffering badly. I a dog they will probably run it to the vet and no one will suspect the Revolution is the culprit because the drug company says it is safe. Vioxx was said to be safe and how many other drugs are now under the gun for being not safe. Please get Dr. Pitcairn's book Naturally Healing for Dogs and Cats. Start with this and learn all you can about how to better the life of your dog and cat.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!!
A very eye opening book for those that truly care about your pets.If more people would read this there would be alot less pets going to the vet every month for allergies, etc..

3-0 out of 5 stars Good content, NO editing
Let me preface this review: I have three dogs (a senior, an allergy dog, and a mutt), and am just now starting to look at cooking their food. I was so excited about this book - it seemed like a good pick for beginners like me. In all, there are 28 dinner recipes, 18 treat recipes, and 3 frozen treat recipes. No recipes for kibble - the author recommends using Cheerios as a substitute to wean dogs off kibble and feed them the dinner recipes once a day.

Pros: The recipes are good. There are some very basic ones, several that I probably would not have thought of on my own, and some that are just fun, like the doggy birthday cakes. They are easy to follow, and most appear to be quick in terms of fixing time. There is also a lot of good information for first-time dog owners. She obviously knows her stuff, and has done research on dog nutrition, food recalls, etc. I also like the section on vacationing with your dog - there are several suggestions on adjusting restaurant/fast food options to give to your dog.

Cons: Apparently, there was no editor. Is this picky of me? I don't believe so, because the grammatical errors throughout the book actually make it hard to read! Some sentences are run-on, some are incomplete, and some just don't make sense due to lack of punctuation, etc. There are entire sections that are randomly bolded - not because the author was trying to make a point. Also, there aren't any feeding guidelines - other books give suggested calories per day for size ranges, for example, while this book does not. Someone like me, who is new to this, will have to buy another book to get feeding amount guidelines. Again, there are no kibble recipes, which I also wanted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional
If you own a dog, this is a MUST READ!! The book is worth the money just for all the recipes, but the added value of the information regarding pet food makes it a bargain. My dog loves his new home cooked meals, and I know I will never again be tempted to buy that junk off the store shelves again. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Serious DANGER
Vet Approved.???Don't go to those vets-they'll KILL your Cat
Seriously, I hope someone types up a list of the names of these vets and circulates
it on the internet.

Onions, Garlic, Grapse, Raisins, etc...You NEVER give to a cat.
This is not healthy food, it's a death sentence.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous Book!
This book should be recalled and destroyed.
Feeding onions to cats??

How on earth did this book ever get past the editing stage?
Unbelievable!

1-0 out of 5 stars Please do not buy this book
As many other reviewers have mentioned, these recipes as originally formulated contain onions, which are toxic to cats.

If you are thinking, So what? I can leave to onions out! The new edition doesn't have onions in the recipes, so it must be fine!

PLEASE reconsider. This book was obviously written by someone who did not know the first thing about feline nutrition. It just as obviously never underwent any kind of editing by anyone who knew anything about feline nutrition. This is not a small problem: Nutritional deficiencies can cause VERY serious and irreversible health problems in cats. (Would you trust a nutritionist who recommended giving your kids arsenic?) Please find another book, or better yet, talk to your veterinarian.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junk Food for Cats
I didn't buy the book and I won't.I searched inside and saw all kinds of flour and bread being used in these recipes.Good grief, why are we feeding cats things they haven't evolved to eat?No wonder so many cats are ending up as fat and diabetic as their owners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Thank you to everyone about the warning on this book!
I was all set to purchase this book in a grocery store after reviewing the contents and wanting to provide a healthy alternative for my cats.I had NO idea that onions are not safe for cats, even though I've had one for almost my entire life.If nothing else, you saved two cats! Thanks! And Amazon, get this off your shelves! Here's a great tip for everyone: NEVER buy anything until you read the reviews on Amazon first! This isn't the first time a review has saved me from making a bad buying decision! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What every pet owner and anyone thinking about owning a pet should know
What perfect timing for the release of this well-researched, thought-provoking guide. President Obama has recently acknowledged the dangers of global warming for the planet. April is the month of Earth Day. Frischmann is way ahead of the curve. Did you know clay kitty litter comes to us via strip-mining? That toxic materials recently discovered in children's toys extend to pet toys? Whether it's a listing of indoor plants toxic to your pets or a discussion of the future of pets and public transportation, Frischmann explores it all. This book is a must-read for all veterinarians, pet store employees, pet owners and anyone considering owning a pet. Our decisions, including our decisions for our pets, do make a difference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and fully researched
Frischmann's book tackles the important, but often overlooked discussed subject of how pet ownership affects the environment. It provides information about pet ownership impacts, and great ideas for how to alleviate them. Best of all the author compares the various options pet owners have when making choices.

Thoughtful and fully researched, Pets and the Planet is brimming with great ideas on how to provide better care for your non-human family members without adversely impacting the environment. There are many more environmental considerations of owning pets here than most people realize exist--that makes this book a must read for every pet owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Informative in Light, Accessible Language!
With all the talk and hype that urges us to "go green" it is easy to get mired in the details. What this book has done is streamline all the information and gives it to us in a succinct and clearly outlined manner.

Though the author even helps readers choose the right pet, we already own our dog - but that didn't matter. We were still able to learn about foods, and what's best not only for the environment, but our pup as well; what toys are "green" (who knew?) and even how to dispose of his waste with the least amount of impact on the environment.

The "Take Action" section is great as a learning tool for parents and/or teachers.

The indepth research is impressive throughout this handy little toolkit of a book. It's one that no pet household should be without! ... Read more
