From a standard college guide you can find loads of statisticsabout student-to-teacher ratios and women-to-men ratios, SAT averagesand grade-point averages, number of applicants versus number ofacceptances, and how many parties there are on a Saturday night (muchof which is included here, too), but if you're looking to major in theperforming arts, you'll have some specific needs the general book willnot address. Carole Everett's The Performing Arts Major's CollegeGuide provides specialized sections for dance, drama, andmusic. She discusses the audition at length, going into what to wearand how to deal with nerves, when to time the audition and what toexpect, by what criteria the auditions are evaluated, and whatnot to do.

For these audition sections alone the guide is worth it. The book goeson, however, to explain the various degrees possible for each majorand discuss matters relevant to every college applicant--such asvisiting campuses, college interviews, the application process, andfinancial aid, plus matters particularly pertinent to arts majors,such as assessing one's talent and setting realistic goals. The mostvital section follows: the selected listing of performing-artsprograms, where for dance and drama, it ranks programs from "mosthighly recommended" to "recommended" to "noteworthy," and does thesame for music, also detailing programs for every area of study, fromjazz to orchestra to composition, and many instrument programs, aswell, from accordion and bassoon to tuba and voice. When first published I am sure this book was an excellent resource, but it was published in 1998 making it next to useless now. When I ordered this book the publishing date was not shown on Amazon's website.

In Amazon's defense when I complained their response was execellent.I was able to return the book and get all my money back including shipping.I also note that publishing dates are now included on the website.Thank you Amazon!

Performing Arts College Guide, 3rd edition
I have teenage sons interested in vocal and/or instrumental performance degrees.This Guide provides solid information about types of programs, what to expect in auditions, and how best to prepared for the process.It is written by a former Julliard admissions counselor.It would probably be worth spending the $$ on the current addition.This addition is dated.

Helpful guide to music schools
I used the 2nd edition of this book when I was an undergraduate searching for a good grad school. I found the information to be clear, and, for the most part, accurate. Of course, teachers and institutions can change rapidly, so a student would be wise to consult a university's website or recruiting materials for the most up-to-date information, but I found the print guide to be a good starting point. I am now a university music teacher and recently had one of my students use the 3rd edition while searching for a grad school.

Yes, this book is primarily intended for high school students. However, a graduate student may also find it to be of use...I did!

WARNING! NOT FOR STUDENTS ALREADY ENROLLED IN COLLEGE!
You might think that this is a guide for students already in college, but beware.Though it has some good advice, it is supposed to be written for high school students wanting to major in drama, dance, or music in college.

A second warning: This book is dated, five year-old material.

Faulty Editing in Dance Section
I bought this guide to help me decide on a dance program, particularly between two in Arizona. Unfortunately there are lots of typos in the book, it seems as if it hasn't been edited (at least the dance section). Some of the mistakes are the following:

1-The schools such as Temple University, Texas Christian University and Towson State University appeared under the "recommended" and"noteworthy" categories for dance. However, in the full description of each school the Author's Comment states all three as" recommended" for dance.

2- The University of Arizona, Tucson is listed in the"noteworthy" category for dance, but later in the full description the Author's Comment reads, "highly recommended" for dance.

I was very confused as to which to believe; the list of schools by category or the Author's Comment.Over all, for me these mistakes are misleading and detract from the credibility of the guide.

On the good side the guide provides you with a lot of information on what to expect from the auditions, and even show you examples of evaluation sheets the teachers use in schoolssuch as Julliard.
It is mostly geared to High school students so if you are an adult seeking to study dance, most of the information will not be helpful. ... Read more

Useless
We bought this book because standard college guides focus only on traditional majors and standard academic measures (average SATs, male/female breakdown, etc.), without any kind of detail on the many performing arts programs hidden within U.S. universities. We hoped it would fulfill its promise of profiling hundreds of programs, so that my daughter -- an aspiring actress seeking good artistic training amid a rich liberal arts environment -- could zero in on the best schools for her needs. But upon reading through it we were appalled -- at first by the countless typos (clearly no copy editor reviewed the entries) and then, increasingly, by the lack of adequate information on well over half the schools we looked up. As a previous reviewer noted, the book completely misrepresents many respected and extensive programs by simply omitting much of their basic data from their entries. We finally gave up on the book because we could not trust it; how could my daughter use it to compare programs when so many listings omit extremely important program data -- such as whether there is an acting program at all, what the course offerings are, whether auditions are required, how many theaters the campus houses, etc.?

The impression I got after reading through several dozen entries is that the editors had sent surveys to hundreds of schools, but that they had a rigid deadline and went to press regardless of whether all the schools had sent back the requested information in time -- that they went to press thinking, "If these schools can't find time to send us information, that's their problem. They just won't have their information included in our book."And that would be an acceptable attitude if this were the Yellow Pages and the entries were paid advertisements -- but this is supposed to be a reference book, not a collection of ads. The readers shell out a hefty sum for it, and the editors owe us more than a "here's the information we got before deadline" attitude. This book is missing so much critical information, and the information it does include is so poorly presented, that it can't possibly be considered a valid resource.

Young performing artists have precious little information to draw upon when they are searching for a college, and this book does almost nothing to make their search any easier.

Lack of Information
While this guide boasts having a beefy number of pages, the information is what is lacking. Only the largest universities (i.e. University of ____ or ____ State) are properly defined in the performing arts areas. The majority of colleges out there are not the most popular but should be given this advantage anyway. Instead, a grand majority of this book's universities are shown as not even having fine arts programs when they actually have fantastic ones. I bought this book with the hopes of being able to narrow down my own college options and was appalled when I saw that it clearly does NOT own up to "700 programs are profiled--more than any other guide." So, when you're out searching for universities offering performing arts, just go to CollegeBoard. It's a much safer and cost-effective deal.

Good Practical Guide
This is a good book for 2 reasons. It clearly profiles college music programs, and also recognizes that there is a lot to be learned at the high school and summer camp level. It was just OKAY
I found the layout to be a bit confusing.The information contained was just OKAY...a bit elementary.

Student Handbook only...
If you are a teacher thinking about buying this book, beware!Unless you are buying each student in your class their own handbook, this book is not necessary.The Teacher's edition has the entire student handbook already included.I purchased this book and it was entirely unnecessary since I had purchased the Teachers edition thinking I needed both for my class.It has helpful activities, but nothing entirely spectacular, and nothing I couldn't have found on the internet for free.

Not extremely user-friendly at first...
As a new teacher, I hope this book will provide the help I've been seeking. But I'm finding it confusingly arranged and excessively chatty.The first section discusses point systems, substitute plans and other minutiae in great detail, while the actual syllabus finally appears unheralded on page 106.Nothing is referenced by page numbers, so I'm constantly flipping back and forth, looking for the material the author references.Maybe I'll get used to it as the year goes on.But at this point it's pretty maddening.

Great for beginning teachers
There are few text books on the market for theatre arts, especailly at the middle-school level. This is a great book for the beginning teacher and/or the middle-school teacher of theatre. It provides an acceptable educational structure while still acknowleging the creative side of the subject.

This is by far the most outstanding teaching guide I've found yet.The lesson plans are well organized which allows me more time for hands-on teaching. Not enthusiastic
I bought and then returned this book.From the description I expected a guide with detail about the different schools and programs, as well as inside information on the schools.Instead, the book contains a couple pages about audition procedures (a much better description is in the Performing Arts Major's College Guide) accompanied by basic information that is easily available off of the school websites (location, number of students plus number of students majoring in the discipline, teacher/student ratios, etc.).It was impossible to tell which programs had a good reputation or better quality.Save your money, and get the information off of the school websites. ... Not Good for Duet Acting in Forensics
I was looking for something that my 5th grade daughter and her partner could use for their Forensic Club competition piece. I bought this book, and Rebecca Young's other book titled, "101 Monologues for Middle School Actors: Including Duologues and Triologues." Unfortunately, both are disappointments.

"Ten-Minute Plays for Middle School Performers" offers only one play for two girls. It's titled, "K-I-S-S-I-N-G," and deals with a topic that my daughter and her partner (and the Forensic Club moderators) find too advance for middle school aged children. There are eighteen plays included in this book--only two for duet acting. If you are looking for a book that has plays for a group of 3 or more participants, then this book would work for you as sixteen of the plays are written for the larger groupings.

Be warned that some of the plays are mean-spirited. Not exactly the behavior you would want to encourage your children to model ("Revenge of the Rash"), much less act out in front of others over-and-over again as they would have to do during a Forensics season. ... Read more

Another Bummer
I heard this is the last book in the RBSD series, and I'm fine with it. My relatives can stop buying them for me! I've moved on to Ballet Friends, a brand new ballet series, perfect if you liked RBSD. Books 1 and 2 just came out! There's more coming, too, that they listed inside the book. Book one is Ballet Friends: Get to the Point! and book two is Ballet Friends 2: The Rise of Beezilla. I've read them both 10 times and they're absolutely the best books ever.

good story yet again!
This time around it is Ellie with the problems, instead of her helping someone else. She is back at the RBS after the student's half-term vaction. Ellie is anxious to see her new boyfriend, Luke, and to spend time with him. Ellie's life has now become very difficult as she tries to juggle ballet, school, Luke and her girl friends, and to practice for the school's production of Swan Lake. Soon, she messes up everything and she realizes something must go, but what?

This is a good story, especially for young ones who want to dance for a living to show just how hard it is to be a ballerina and the desire it takes to become one.

Ellie and the gang are back together except that Ellie isent intrested in them has much as she is in her new boyfriend. I read the other review and checked out the new BALLET FRIENDS BOOKS series on their site balletfriendsbooks.Thanx for the heads up!! It's SO COOL!!! I spent all night checking out all the cool stuff, reading about the books, and groovin to the free tunes.The site's really pretty too!! It's all Hello Kitty and butterflies.Anyway i don't care for Royal Ballet books at all.I got one for Christmas and was very disappointed. It was like preachy and stuck up and i hated all the issues the author tried to push.It was so annoying.Ballet Friends Books is like the opposite cause it's all about having fun and giving the readers what they want. I can't wait to get my hands on it!!!!!

Another great installment
Ellie and her ballet friends returned to The Royal Ballet School's Lower School after a half term break. During the break the girls found out about the results of their appraisals. Hard working and talented Ellie easily passes her appraisal, yet she worries that some of her other friends, particularly Sophie, might not make it. Ellie's concern is deepens when Sophie returns and just doesn't seem to be acting like herself. Good old Ellie tries to help Sophie is whatever way she can, all the while working hard at her own ballet.This is another wonderful ballet story that will entertain anyone, but especially young ballet students. As I stated in my reviews of the previous books, the only negative comment I can make, is that it can sometimes sound like an advertisement of the R.B.S., which is fine, but can be annoying at times.

THE BEST BOOK EVER!
I absolutly LOVE these books! Not just Sophie's Flight to Fancy, but all of them! In fact, I just finished reading #4 today, and I was sad that it was over. (And no, not sad because Sophie is leaving)Every time I finish these books, I wish I had them all so I could just keep reading. I'll be sitting in school wondering when the next possible chance to read them will be. It's espeically interesting because I am a dancer, as well. Reading about the dance classes was my favorite part. Moss put it into so much detail, that I felt as if I was there. (Now I have a craving for fish and chips, even though I hate fish and chips! She just made it sound so good, that it made my mouth water)And I'm not the only one who says this. My entire dance class, plus some of my friends read these books. We adore them! But they don't just appeal to dancers. If you are not a dancer, or if you know little about dancing, Moss has a handy Glossary in the back of the book, explaining the common terms used. As for Sophie leaving, it is sad, but that's what makes it so good! That's what keeps it interesting. Now I can't wait to read #5 because I am wondering who will replace her, if they'll still keep in touch, ect. This book get a 5-star rating, no doubt about it. I really hope she writes more, because I'm already on the 5th book!

Sophie's Not Coming Back, Oh No!!
Reporter's Opinion: I thought that this book was sad because I really hoped that Sophie would win the choreography competition and be allowed back into the Royal Ballet School. She didn't get let back in.

Summary: It was a week after the appraisals and they all passed it, but Sophie didn't. She was appraised out. Sophie is only going to stay in the Royal Ballet School until the summer. They all soon found out that there would be a choreography competition. Sophie and Grace both entered and they both passed. The winner was Grace, but the judges made an honorable mention to Sophie's dance; Flight of Fancy. At the end of the year, Sophie leaves to start her new Performing Arts School.
My least favorite part was when Sophie had to go. She was my favorite character in the story!!
