3-0 out of 5 stars A-Z of Perennials
This book had very nice pictures. Wonderful pictures of flowers in bloom and/or foliage. It briefly listed size, color, time of bloom, and sun/shade preferences, and then went into explanation at the bottom. I found that helpful for a quick reference on the details of a plant. The author could have listed other details though. Such as, the soil preference, etc. When comparing it to other books, I found that some plant specifications were not accurate, although this book had some nice plants listed that others did not even have. Overall, this book is a helpful book for the gardener or for a landscaper to use a picture book for customers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pictorial Guide To Perennials
This fine book conjures up thoughts of those "wish list" seed catalogs that many of us received in the heyday of gardening. The book is designed around making it easy to select, prepare, grow and care for any of the 800 plants discussed. As any avid gardener knows, planning for spring begins the day of the first frost. And to this end, the Pictorial Guide To Perennials is an excellent way to get through the doldrums of a Midwest winter. Accurate color printing of the photos and concise yet informative plant descriptions combines for an easy-to-use format not found in other gardening books. The writing style quickly leads the reader to where they want to go - be it shade gardens or soil preparation. Quick references in the section dividers enables most anyone to find the right plant for their planting climate zone, no matter what the level of sun their yard receives. Well researched and referenced back to both University experts and renowned perennial plant propagators. Read it for the information, or of the fantasy that one day you will have such wonderful plantings as pictured in the book, if only you follow all of the instructions! Good value for the quality received

2-0 out of 5 stars returned the book
I ordered this book to learn more about the flowers I have planted or would like to have in my flower garden.Well, it wasn't what I was looking for. Most of the flowers are ones I have never even heard of or are the kind that would be expensive. It does have beautiful pictures tho. I returned the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great photos, good information, unusual plants
I have to confess, when I saw "Better Homes and Gardens" on the cover I wasn't expecting much--at most, a rehashing of all the typical, common garden perennials.I was very pleasantly surprised to find a book full of excellent photos and descriptions of many new, uncommon, and unusual garden plants. This book is a great complement to all the other gardening books already out there, and I highly recommend it.Let's hope BH&G continues to put out such high-quality gardening books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perennials for Today's Garadens
You're in for a surprise and a real treat when you get past the pretty butuninformative cover and title of this very exciting book.A moredescriptive title would have been Uncommon Perennials for The AdventurousGardener.

The book is filled with page after page of underused and brandnew plants. This feast is served up with the extraordinary plant knowledgeand innovative design ideas that we've come to expect from plantsman anddesigner C.Colston Burrell.

There is something here for every gardenerbut I think especially for those intrepid souls eager to expand their plantand design repertoire (and who isn't).Many of these plants will be new tothe reader - thank goodness! The plant names alone - Anemonopsis,Tricyrtis 'Kohaku', Carex 'Island Brocade', Phygelius 'African Queen' --are enough to drive the gardener straight to the appropriate mailordercatalogue, a list of which is thoughtfully provided in the index.

Don'tbe put off by the new and unusual in Perennials for Today's Gardens. Burrell thoroughly discusses the ferns, hellebores, epimediums, salvias, hibiscus, iris and geraniums that populate our gardens. His clearpresentation on using new plants alongside our mainstays inspires us toactually try those trilliums, primulas and woodland peonies that have beenso tempting but intimidating.

The book's sections on design and gardenecology are extremely well written and useful. In fact this is a greatcourse on garden design. The plant sections of the book are divided intoshade, part shade and sun gardens, and include underused native plants andsome of the newest plants making their way into Western gardens from Chinaand other less explored parts of the world. The photographs are excellent- obviously chosen to show how a plant will really work in the garden.

Ican't praise this book enough.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Homes & Gardens Perennials for Today's Gardens
