Product Description
Using a unique age-specific organization, this book discusses all aspects of pediatric dentistry from infancy through adolescence. Each age-specific section covers the physical, cognitive, emotional, and social changes that children experience, as well as the epidemiology of dental disease at that age. Other chapters explore the examination, treatment planning, radiographic concerns, prevention, trauma, restorative dentistry, pulp therapy, orthodontics, and behavior management of each age range. * Nine chapters are now in full color, providing more detail — especially in the oral pathology and esthetics chapters. * Revised sedation guidelines for pediatric patients (presented during the May 2004 AAPD meeting) are reflected, so that practitioners stay current on pain and anxiety control issues. * The latest caries risk assessment information (revised by the AAPD in 2002) is included. * Text boxes spotlight topics of interest, such as tobacco use, the Alternative !Restorative Treatment, and brushing techniques for special-needs children. * Coverage includes anticipatory guidance, an innovative approach to preventive dentistry — this proactive developmentally based counseling system focuses on the needs of a child at a particular stage of life. * Coverage of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment situations is expanded, with more illustrations to provide readers with examples of clinical scenarios. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Easy tobe read
This a complete book which is very easy tobe read. It presents nice visuals as well as very useful summary boxes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An easy to use, comprehensive text.
As a general practitioner who uses this book to answer fairly routine questions about care and treatment of children, I recommend it highly. It is easy to read and well organized. It openly acknowledges areas ofambiguity or controversy in the field and gives what appears to be abalanced view of the issues. I feel very comfortable relying on this textfor most of my pedodontic questions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Pediatric Dentistry
On page xiii Preface, it is quite meaningful to all of us.I write it here for your reference "a lot of players say you can't play that course. That's a bunch of junk.A good player can play any course. You adapt your game to the golf course. You don't adapt the course to your game." It is the spirit of dentistry. Can anyone of us take a few minutes of thinking what's the feelig of visiting a dentist at her or his childhood especially at their first visit?I said that because I met before. The one changed my life and made me having a chance of reading this book. So, it is a good book.Keep it!
The book provides many clearly illustrations that are easily understand and very useful at practice.
There is a special chapter talking about pedo endodontics and writing so details. Moreover, a huge chapter of dental trauma of children give us references to handle the case if we meet.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most concise reference pediatric dentistry book
This book is really good especially for dentists in Australasia. I found this book to be concise and straight to the point. It is clinically focussed. Definately recommended for thegeneral dentist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I'm a PA student and I love this book! It's probably too in-depth for board reviews, but OUTSTANDING for concepts in which you're deficient. This book prepared me well for rouding during outpatient peds and newborn nursery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and Inaccurate
No mention of ME (CFS) an extremely debilitating and relatively common disease (though less in children than adults).Very brief and inaccurate mention of Fibromyalgia, which is just as disabling and four times as common as ME.Says there is one med approved for Fibro; there are actually three now. Lists Fibro under noninflammatory (!!) pain disorders.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good resource
I love the Lange serires of medical texts. They work very well for me in my practice as a nurse practioner for quick look ups as well as for a more indepth study.

5-0 out of 5 stars The quality we are used to by Lange Series
I am waiting to start my pediatrics residency and I bought this book to start studying and prepare myself before starting at the hospital in about 2 years. As with the other books in the current series you experience good and uptodate information in an easy manner and good layout. Not enough pictures, but that's the norm with this series. If you are looking for images of rashes or pediatric disease pictures then you are better off buyng another book, maybe an atlas. If however you want all the facts on a certain disease, then you are covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars good for interns
This was my reference of choice when I was an intern at a busy major children's hospital. It's comprehensive, not too heavy to lug around, gives you the important details and gives you references as to where to go next for further reading. It's not always enough information when it comes to specific cases.I usually went to UpToDate, PedsinReview or lit searches at that point.I think this is a solid book to have early in your career because it lets you cover the most relevant material in a readable manner. As a second year, I don't go back to Currents as much and mostly go with articles. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
Excellent advice in this book, excellent views on children and how each is different. I can't stand the people who are so cut and dry, like.."well this is all you gotta do..." like that is supposed to work for every child. Doubt it! My son is 14 months and I am introducing the potty, he actually enjoys the trips to the bathroom and having me read his "potty book" to him. I recommend this book, and I actually just leant it too a friend who has a 3 year old who has no interest in the potty. Hopefully it will give her some great tips that work for her son as well. =)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I bought this book for my 26 month old grandson who doesn't have the slightest interest in potty training. His parents have started to read it and say that the book has many good points that they are going to try.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
I found this book to be very useful. I helped me figure out why my son was doing certain things during potty training.

I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for potty training parents!!!
An excellent book, I am a Pediatrician and I firmly believe that the American Academy of Pediatrics had the best interests of our kids at heart when they wrote this book.It is informative, helpful, and fun to read.It helped to calm my concerns that I should be rushing my son to potty train, I think I'll wait a little longer until he's really ready.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely above average but a let down for solving problems..
This book was actually quite informative in the first quarter about mental readiness and physical signs to watch for. The problem is that it never targets troubleshooting issues that occur during the training. It seems to go from "Here are signs that you're ready to go potty" and then straight to "Now that your child is trained, here are relapse issues". It doesn't target issues or problems you have during the training process. One section that I was very interested in was dealing with kids who hide when they are doing a BowelMovement. It had a title sectioned with that teaser but no solutions other than to say, "It happens." About 75 percent of the book is devoted to problems you might have (bedwetting, etc) for an older child (5 years plus) who is already mostly potty trained. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pediatric Recall
Good book for reviewing both inpatient and outpatient peds diagnosis and treatment. It would have been more helpful if the book was organized a little different with the most common outpatient problems, such as otitis media, separated out from other info that's more pertinent to inpatient treatment.Luckily, the index is helpful on that one, so an easy flip of a few pages and I had what I was looking for though.I'm glad to have it as a useful reference in my pocket.

5-0 out of 5 stars solid review material
would recommend. great for studying peds shelf exam.also very handy on the wards or to quickly review something.it has great pimp questions!

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much for a "Recall" Text
Although packed with good information, this text was just too big to fit in a ward coat, and held too much information to be utilized effectively, unlike other books in the series. There are better quick-review resources out there for use on the wards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compact and data packed
The book contains concise information for USMLE step 2 preparation. Even though it is priced on the higher side, it seems to be worth the money you put into it. For those who want to review their med school stuff quicklyand completely this is a good buy. Especially useful for FMGs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend for all Pre-Hospital Providers
This book is a must-have for any EMT or Paramedic. It is an easy read but does require a baseline knowledge. It is best used to review during or after your EMT training.
Pros: this book is tailored for all levels. Each topic has a basic level target and then is followed by a clearly marked "Advanced Life Support" section making it easy to get what you want out of the book based on your interest and education.
-Easy to read, not really a strict textbook format
-Excellent points in exam and development stage based approach
-2nd Ed. incorporates 2005 AHA guidelines
-Step by step and photographed procedure index for all skills
Cons: The only con I could find was a lack of some great points from the PALS textbook when compared.
The book alone is filled with pearls of pediatric care so if you cant make a course to get your certification, this book alone will improve your care!

Be safe

5-0 out of 5 stars AAP's PEPP
As prehospital professionals, we know several things about children; on average only 10% of our patients are pediatrics; we are aware of physiological differences based on age; we know how quickly they decompensate and pediatric calls make most of us very nervous. I read this book in conjunction with taking a 16 hour course on care for children by prehospital professionals; I found the information to be very helpful and know that my comfort level in the field when working with pediatric patients and their parents has been improved as a result. I highly suggest this book (and course) to all EMT's and 'medics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for what it is
This book really helped me on the Pediatric Cardiology rotation as a med student. It is very pocketable and covers almost every condition or topic I searched for.

The only issue is that the detail/depth is kind of lacking--but that's probably because of the small size. It was good enough to get me started; at home I'd look up more about each topic on the web. I also wish it had more EKG primers and examples since that's something that a student would benefit from.

5-0 out of 5 stars When's the Second Edition Coming?
This is an excellent book and I've found it very useful in general pediatric practice. However, it is now 6 years old--a lifetime in clinical practice. A new edition is much needed.

Medical texts are a field where, despite my love of them, I think real books are obsolete. Tomes like Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics or Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine are too heavy and too expensive. The also quickly become outdated. Far better to have frequently updated information in "the clouds" for subscription access.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the Allergist/Asthma/Immunologist specialist
This is by far the best reference book I have seen in the Field of Allergy/Asthma/Immunology.The chapters are well written (I wish "Middleton's Allergy Principle and Practice" was this well written) and complete. Charts are clear. There is a small picture section in the front which as some nice clear pictures (although some a a little small)--Perhaps the authors can expand this section with the next edition, which I'll eagerly purchase. Let's hope someone can come out with a similar quality book for the adult population. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars too much work to get the answers for the review questions
The book is fine.. The only thing that sucks is that at the end of each chapter there are review questions. The thing that sucks is that you have to go online and register and then get the answers.I think if you are paying so much money for a book then it should come with the answers.Students do not have the time to go online and register their book and then have to download each of the answers to the chapters.. I did it and saved it onto my computer but that means that I now have to go to my computer every time I want to check answers. There are over 40 chapters so 40 downloads..

Product Description

This will be the fifth edition of successful clinical manual aimed at all practitioners treating children with cancer and blood diseases, such as leukemia, anemia, and bone marrow failure. As with previous editions, this edition will be a comprehensive book on patient management, replete with algorithms and flow diagrams on diagnosis and management. Its concise and easy-to-read format will enable readers to make accurate diagnoses and permit them to treat patients even if they have not had extensive previous hematologic or oncologic experience. It will contain a list of normal values at various ages in children, which is extremely useful as a reference in the management of patients.

Since the previous edition was written five years ago, there have been considerable advances particularly in the treatment and management of oncologic diseases in children. These oncology sections (approximately 40% of the book) will be entirely rewritten to incorporate all current protocols. In addition, advances in many other areas will require that all hematology sections of the book be updated.

The successful basic format and content of clinical manifestations, diagnosis and differential diagnosis will be maintained - as in previous editions, the editor will closely edit chapter content to maintain consistency in format, depth, and style. In addition to the core group of hematologists and oncologists from Schneider Children's Hospital, who contributed to the 4th edition, the editor is inviting 15 new authors who are all experts from around the country - in order to keep up with the advances in management of hem/onc diseases. The book will reflect the 45+ years of practical experience by the editor as well as the extensive clinical experience and research expertise of the various contributors.

Feature

  • Offers a concise, systematic approach to all pediatric hematologic and oncologic disorders in one reference manual

  • Easy-to-read format: multiple tables, charts, and flow-diagrams for diagnosis and management of pediatric hematologic and oncologic disorders

  • Clear presentation by practicing clinicians, who are also academic researchers, of recent developments in molecular genetics, cytogenetics, immunology, transplantation, and biochemistry to the extent that they have bearing on clinical practice

Benefits

  • Practitioners responsible for the care of children with hem/onc diseases will save time going to one concise, authoritative source for diagnosis and treatment options, without having to wade through all the details in larger tomes on hematology or oncology, or in thousands of journal articles

  • Residents will use it as a guide to prepare for board examinations in pediatric hematology/oncology, pediatrics, hematology, and oncology

  • Practicing pediatricians, hematologists, oncologists, fellows, and pediatric nurses will use it a quick source for a second opinion in diagnosis and disease management when they are unable to consult with a pediatric hem/onc specialist

  • Practicing pediatric hem/onc specialists will use the book as a "refresher course" and will appreciate the systematic approach

  • For all practitioners, correct diagnosis (and therefore correct treatment) of oncologic and hematologic diseases depends on a strong understanding of the molecular basis for the disease

Editorial Review

Product Description
There is ample evidence that children and adolescents in large numbers are actively using integrative (complementary and alternative) therapies. Various studies now indicate that over 50% of pediatricians surveyed would refer a patient for integrative therapy, and they would welcome more natural therapies for children provided they were safe and effective. However, there has been little training for pediatricians in this area. Integrative Pediatrics addresses these issues and provides guidelines for pediatricians, parents, and general audiences in a balanced, evidence-based manner.

In this volume in the Weil Integrative Medicine Library series, the authors describe a rational and evidence-based approach to the integrative therapy of childhood disorders and well-child care, integrating the principles of alternative and complementary therapies into the principles and practice of conventional pediatrics. The authors examine what works and what doesn't and offer practical guidelines for physicians to incorporate integrative medicine into their practice and how to advise patients and their parents on reasonable and effective therapies. The text also covers areas of controversy and identifies areas of uncertainty where future research is needed. Chapters also cite the best available evidence for both safety and efficacy of all therapies discussed.

The series editor is Andrew Weil, MD, Professor and Director of the Program of Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizon. Dr. Weil's program was the first academic program in the US and he is the major name in integrative medicine in the US, and well-known around the world. His program's stated goal is "to combine the best ideas and practices of conventional and alternative medicine into cost effective treatments without embracing alternative practices uncritically." ...
