Product Description
As widely spread health problems related to over- and undernutrition have grown now-a-days to an epidemic extent and even prevail over infectious diseases, a better knowledge of the metabolic basis of clinical nutrition has become essential. The extremes of the nutritional spectrum, undernutrition and obesity, are no longer considered as isolated opposites with different effects on separate risk groups, but paradoxically prove to be interacting in a setting of rapidly changing lifestyles, as is presently the case worldwide. Recurring issues such as insulin resistance, changes in intermediary metabolism, fluid and electrolyte physiology, genetic and non-genetic inheritance are highlighted, as well as the biological linkage between maternal undernutrition and the development of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease in later life. The problems at stake present a new and enormous challenge for future healthcare policies and, therefore, are better tackled today. ... Read more

Product Description
When developing a new product, many obstacles have to be overcome from the idea to the shelf: know-how from different subject areas is called for to create a product that is not only technically feasible, but also complies with regulations and meets consumer needs and preferences. This book addresses and tries to identify forces that potentially drive innovation in pediatric nutrition, an endeavor which surpasses research, clinical and academic thinking. The likelihood of translating innovative research concepts into practical applications depends on a large number of factors; Clinical studies, adherence to regulatory standards and environments of various countries, policy and politics on child health and nutrition, marketing issues, economic considerations as well as the state of food technology all determine whether and how a product can be brought to the market. Expectations and response of both consumers and health care professionals are likewise of very high importance. Due to its broad scope, this publication is of interest to everyone involved in one way or another in the development and launch of new products for pediatric nutrition. ... Read more

Product Description
In this volume, leading international pediatric educators present a critical analysis of current pediatric education. The contributors identify training objectives for general practitioners, specialists, and subspecialists in the industrialized and developing world, pinpoint the deficiencies in present training systems, and propose solutions to the chief difficulties. Emphasis is placed on adapting medical curricula to the differing needs of industrialized and developing countries. For instance, while genetic counseling and management of fetal anomalies are major areas of practice in industrialized countries, infectious diseases such as cholera are of higher priority in developing countries. And while industrialized countries must focus on training subspecialists to use sophisticated technologies, developing countries must train health officers to give advice on diet, vaccinations, and hygiene and manage diseases using affordable diagnostic and therapeutic methods. ... Product Description
There is no longer any doubt that the inherited genetic constitution of the individual has a large influence on the entire life cycle, from human fetal development and pre- and postnatal growth to subsequent health status. However, growing evidence suggests that this predisposition is not rigid, but that early genetic imprinting, caused by exposure to a diverse spectrum of nutrients, macromolecules, microbial agents and other cellular or soluble components present in the external environment, is also of importance. According to this concept of the developmental origins of adult diseases, intrauterine and early life events play an important role in the etiology of human diseases: there seems to exist a critical >window of opportunity' in the human infant before and during pregnancy, and up to 24 months of age. Altered exposure to different environmental agents during this critical period may determine the nature of responses in the perinatal period, and the expression of specific disease states in later life. The papers presented in this publication thus focus on the impact of perinatal growth, nutrition, environmental microflora, and host immune responses on the outcome of health and disease in later life. ... Product Description
Adequate nutrition is especially important during infancy and childhood, where even short periods of malnutrition have long-lasting effects on growth, development and health in adult life. There are several high-risk scenarios for the development of malnutrition, which are the focus of the current publication: Atopic diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, and preterm delivery. For the pediatric allergist, it is important to understand the mechanisms regulating IgE responses to food proteins since they may also be the earliest markers for the atopic march. As breastfeeding seems to have only limited effects regarding the atopic march, other measures to modulate infantile immune responses have to be taken, including the use of hypoallergenic formulae or the addition of probiotics or prebiotics to infant formulae. The second part of this book highlights the functional properties of nutrition with regard to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and the ensuing chronic alterations of gastrointestinal function.Topics addressed include the molecular basis of some diseases, main causes of and nutritional measures in chronic enteropathy, including the role of parenteral and enteral nutrition, stressed mucosa and the role of nutrition in cholestatic liver disease. Nowadays, smaller and more immature infants are surviving - but the smaller the infant, the greater the accrued deficit as nutritional needs change with advancing maturity, and one formulation may not meet all requirements. Furthermore, there are no sensitive, accurate and precise measures of nutritional outcome. The net effect of these uncertainties is that all very-low-birth-weight infants are growth retarded at hospital discharge. Strategies for improving growth in these high-risk infants are at the center of the last part of this publication. ... Read more

Based on a workshop held in Pakistan, this book presents the discussion and insight of renowned experts -- including clinicians, epidemiologists, medical researchers, and laboratory-based investigators -- from ten countries and five continents. Coverage includes epidemiology, transmission, etiology and pathogenesis of diarrheal disease, as well as its nutritional dimensions, management, complications and preventions, and the latest developments in vaccination against infectious diarrhea. The importance of anorexia, vomiting, and intestinal losses of fluids, nutrients and energy is emphasized. Special focus is placed on: persistent diarrhea and gastrointestinal infections in children with AIDS; inflammatory bowel disease and the other causes of prolonged diarrhea. This text also covers the host-defense mechanisms, preventive aspects, and the role of the immunological and other factors in breast milk that prevent diarrhea in infants. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Seller
Book was in condition as described. Shipped promptly and arrived the same day as the delivery estimate. Good seller.

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated book filled with typos
This book was required for my college class and it was an okay book- it has a lot of typos with simple words that can be easily noticed and edited which was annoying. Some of the information are outdated and irrelevant with such nonsenses. It was published 5 years ago so it made sense why this book is rather outdated... Last of all, this book offers some pros like valuable first aid information for CPR and Helmich, safety and nutrition for infants to preschoolers. I'm giving this book 3 stars.

Available data on the links between a mother's nutrition and the nutrition and growth of her infant and current information on the risk of transmission through breastfeeding of allergic diseases, environmental toxins, and certain viruses (including the HIV virus) are included. "Nutrition During Lactation" also studies the effects of maternal cigarette smoking, drug use, and alcohol consumption. ... Read more
