Editorial Review

Product Description
As a successor to The Design and Construction of Compilers, first published in 1981 by John Wiley, this book retains the same basic approach of the earlier text but looks at compiling a wider range of languages, and is particularly concerned with the implementation of high level programming languages, especially 'modern' languages such as ALGOL 68, Pascal and ADA. The book is soundly based on the underlying theory and the emphasis is on the design of compilers and the practical aspects of compiler writing. Compiler writing is discussed in an integrated manner, including lexical analysis, syntax analysis, use of symbol tables, storage allocation, and code generation, without overemphasizing one aspect at the expense of others. ... Product Description

The Ada 2005 Reference Manual combines the International Standard ISO/IEC 8652/1995(E) for the programming language Ada with the corrections of the Technical Corrigendum 1 approved by ISO in February 2001 and with the Amendment 1 expected to be approved by ISO in late 2006 or early 2007. Both the Technical Corrigendum 1 and the Amendment 1 list only the changes made to the International Standard.

The Ada 2005 Reference Manual incorporates these changes in the overall standard text and thus will replace the former versions as an indispensable working companion for anybody using Ada professionally or learning and studying the language systematically. In naming this version, we have chosen the vernacular term Ada 2005 used by the Ada community to refer to the interesting extensions made to the language Ada by the Amendment 1.

Product Description
The aim of this revised and expanded edition is to help the reader to acquire and develop the skill of computer programming in a block-structured language and to foster an understanding of the related topics of data structures and data processing. No previous knowledge of computer programming or computer concepts is assumed. The book is intended particularly for students of Computer Studies to GCE Advanced level, BTEC National and Higher National awards, first-year undergraduate level and British Computer Society Part One examinations. It should also be suitable for students needing a knowledge of programming, but whose major course of study is not computing - for example, engineering students and those requiring a self-study course - and as a primer for readers who can already program in other languages, but wish to learn PASCAL in the shortest possible time. An ELBS/LPBB edition is available. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars why this ?
Who wants this book? So weird that it came out in 2003. Twenty years ago, Pascal started getting supplanted by C in universities and the marketplace. Thumbing thru the book, there is the familiar material going all the way back to Pascal User Manual and Report: ISO Pascal Standard. You know: constant definition, type declaration, variable definition etc. Holmes does explain material at a more leisurely pace than that book, which was somewhat terse.

But the cold reality is that today, if you want to invest your time in this book, it's just wasted effort. Little demand for Pascal programmers. Less even than for Fortran programmers. Since Fortran at least led to the buildup of massive code bases when it was the main computational language. Never happened with Pascal. So there is much less legacy code to maintain in Pascal than Fortran. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "Borland Pascal from Square One" is the best!
This book was perfect.Jeff Duntemann didn't tell us what to do, but how to do what we wanted. It is the perfect "bible" for anyone seriously interested in PASCAL programming.I'm a student of programming, and I never leave home without it.His reasoning and real-life examples along with a good sense of humor make it an excellent programming book even if the concepts are the only thing you need.I still use it for C++ to look up his analogies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best programming book I've read!
I'm a student programmer and was having trouble understanding the techno babble in all of my other text books. I took it upon myself to go out and buy a book that would explain programming to me in terms I could understand and relate to. I'd read Visual Developer (PC Techniques) magazine and knew that Jeff Duntemann was one of the editors and enjoyed reading his articles. I found this book written by him and took a chance. As the title says, it does take you from Square One and moves you easily through Pascal programming, step by step. Mr. Duntemann uses his wit and good sense of humor to keep you wanting to read and learn more. He has actually found a way to make learning computer programming fun!! I would definitely recommend this book to any beginning or intermediate programmer whether you are a student or just wanting to learn at home on your own. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hello!!
With the other material out there, by default this must be one of the better books. In any event, the basic content of the book is "all over the place" and has no cohesion for the reader to get a completehandle on.The reader must be presumed to have significant prior knowledgeof programming and programming structure to get a grasp on the book'scontent and what the author is trying to communicate.Examples areincomplete. You might as well buy it if you are going to learn thesubject.

Product Description
With this text, Shaffer and Platt provide an alternate presentation and organization of material for an introduction to programming in Turbo Pascal. Emphasizing subprograms in the beginning and the object-oriented paradigm later, this new approach introduces functions and one repetitive control structure first, then slowly adds other structures. Students are motivated through the use of a chapter problem to demonstrate concepts, which is formalized towards the end of each chapter. This gives students substantial, yet understandable, examples of structures, presenting a more realistic picture of problem solving and program development.Abstraction, the underlying theme of the text, is demonstrated with control structures, data types, subprograms, and the object-oriented paradigm.Descriptions of nine subfields of computer science are integrated into the text. The text meets all criteria of the CS1 course, several from CS2, and related knowledge units. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not for beginners of the language
This book was written in 1987 and assumes that you are already familiar with Turbo Pascal. There is a review of Pascal, but if you are a beginner, this will not help you.You need to have a working knowledge to use this best.

This also was originally published as "Advanced Turbo Pascal: Programming and Techniques."The main difference is the addition of Turbo Pascal Database Toolbox and Turbo Pascal Graphix Toolbox.

This text covers dynamic allocation, interfacing to assembly language routines, encryption and data compression, and expression parsing and evaluation. It also has a section in the appendix on converting C and BASIC programs to Turbo Pascal. Each program is explained well for the reader.

If you are still working with Turbo Pascal, this has some good examples for you. ... Read more
