It really is amazing that somebody who had the Parkinson disease could recover, by changing numerous things of his daily life. I'm convinced myself that the environment is one cause for the Parkinson Syndrom development in a body. Most likely the detailed described food additives have negative effects, and also the environmental conditions, where we have to live under. This book is very recommendable, not only for Parkinson - patients, but for everybody. Change Your live today, is the "Motto". Who doesn't want to live in a nondangerous environment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for PWP & families
I am a PWP (5 years) and HIGHLY recommended this compassionately written and experience- based book.

I often turn to it when things are going on with the PD that I don't understand or can't identify using accepted medical terminology. For example, I find myself simply not caring about things I can't change anymore, even though in the past I have been a wise crackin' firebrand.

As Dr. Friedman points out, such "apathy" can be protective-- a brilliant insight on his part- protecting the PWP from possible depression related to the realization & constant reminders that PD gives us that we are not able to do things we used to love.

What is the difference between psychologically useful, protective PD apathy and apathy that is not useful for a PWP? Read this book to find out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have for Patients and Caregivers
As I read this book, I felt that it was written from inside my experience as a person with Parkinson's disease. It provides insights for the patient in a style that a non-medical person can understand. It would be especially valuable for someone who knows a Parkinson's patient. I was able to hand this book to my wife and say "this is me."Thanks, Dr. Friedman, for a significant contribution to the Parkinson's literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Making the Connection Between Brain and Behavior
Parkinson described the Shaking Palsy in 1817 as a motor disorder without significant effect on the mind.Charcot agreed in his analysis half a century later. Only recently has it been appreciated that depression, dementia, and other mental problems can be the most disabling features of this disease. As a neurologist who developed Parkinsonism myself I have in vain been searching for a comprehensive review of these problems, and now I have found it in Dr. Joseph Friedman'sMaking the Connection Between Brain and Behavior--Coping with Parkinson's Disease. It is filled with common sense practical suggestions related to subjects such as driving, caregiver stress, appropriate and inappropriate use of the emergency room, and every conceivable neuropsychological symptom.Patients and their families as well as physicians and nurses will find this text invaluable.I recommend it most strongly and thank Dr. Friedman for giving hope and optimism to those of us who must do battle with the Shaking Palsy every day of our lives. ... I have Young Onset Parkinson Disease I bought the book "Whats shakin" and I was not disappointed! I would be reading the book get to laughing so hard that tears would roll down my face.I would highly recommend this book to anyone that can see the humor in lifes challenges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insider's Look at the Author
(This review is more about the author.)

I am fortunate enough to call the author, John, my neighbor & friend -- he lives just two doors down from me.One of my first conversations with John was during the winter of 2005-06; I was shoveling my driveway, with my son (just a few months old, but bundled up) in a front carrier.John came rushing over with a shovel, and helped me finish clearing my driveway. He said, "I couldn't let a woman with a baby shovel by herself."He told me he had Parkinson's Disease, and I told him I was all-too familiar with the symptoms (someone close to me had the disease as well).

What a great first impression! Here's a guy who has every right to be unhappy with his situation, but he's one of the most positive people I now know. It's taken some time to get to know John: loves his cigars, has one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever seen (I told him he should write about that too), and helps his neighbors year round...and that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Living in the same town means I get to read articles in the local newspaper written by John, and he's also shared some of his poetry with me.Everything he writes is inspirational. For this reason, John reminds me of a viking. He makes the best out of what he's dealt, he doesn't feel sorry for himself, and he loves a good laugh -- even if it's at himself.

If you know someone who is living with Parkinson's, or has recently been diagnosed --or even someone who would like to know what it's like living with the disease, then buy this book. Most people only think of the symptoms, and forget to consider how a person's life is affected. This book will give you a new perspective -- a postive one.

And...I don't think John would mind if I recommend Perelman's Pocket Cyclopedia of Cigars 2008 edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching, Funny, and Inspirational
This book is an excellent read for anyone looking for perspective in life. It is written straight from the heart of a man who has looked adversity in the face and laughed. His anecdotes which were caused or contributed to by Parkinson's both amuse and encourage anyone, whether or not they have struggled with a debilitating disease. I would highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a quick read that will touch the heart and enlighten the mind

    5-0 out of 5 stars I'm cured!
I have purchased numerous copies of "What's Shakin" and they keep disappearing.I loan them to family and friends and they loan them to others. These people are also buying copies of the book for family and friends. If this book was rated honestly it would receive more than five stars. I told John that if laughter is truly the best medicine I would be cured.I was laughing so hard at times, I could not open my eyes to read.
This man, his family, and the book are wonderful examples of courage.I can't wait until the second is published. I also have young onset parkinsons. ... Read more

Dr. Abe Liebberman hasanswered questions I have had about the baffling condition and it is unfortunate that we do not have more doctors with his knowledge and expertise in America today.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your $ if you expect title to be true!
as a recently diagnosed parkinson disease person, i have read and re-read everything i could get from pd foundations on symptons, treatments and what to expect with pd. the title of this book, "shaking up parkinson disease - fighting like a tiger, thinking like a fox" led me to believe that the famous dr.lieberman would be revealing actions and stragegies not previously printed on dealing with and CURING pd. the title is misleading...contents are almost word for word from his "100 questions & answers about parkinson disease," which i found well organized and quite useful. why were relatives of pd patients interviewed when there are approximately 1 1/2 million
people WITH pd? [whose views are highly valued by me]. i was offened as the good doctor and a-l-l of his famous family interviewes promoted the bible as part of the cure and spouted
endless quotes from it. while spiritual growth may play a part in dealing with this disease, it is incorrect to promote one faith's book of books as part of the actual cure! purchasers would be better served had the dr. shared proactive ways to participate in finding the cure and left his religous beliefs for a book on faith! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable book
A noted surgeon who left his native Philippines to escape the connubial dictatorship of the Marcoses and continued his practice in Canada and, later, the U.S., my Dad read Joel Havemann's account of his valiant and ongoing battle with Parkinson's Disease, and had nothing but praise for this highly interesting and informative work.

He wrote, "I found A Life Shaken a great and wonderful book that proved most valuable to me because your Uncle Nene has been fighting his own battle with PD for the last 10 years and is now in a fully assisted nursing home. Joel Havemann's description of his disease is very vivid -- much better than any of my old medical textbooks".

Retired for 20 years now, my Dad, Dr. Gumersindo Garcia, Jr.maintains his status as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and attends medical conferences regularly, while also keeping up with medical developments through the medical journals he gets at home.

He concludes, "I know that Parkinson's and Alzheimer's afflict millions of Americans, which is why I hope and pray that cures will be discovered for these horrible diseases soon".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Shaken, A Fork Taken
Whether or not you are a Parkinson's Disease patient, you will be gripped by the candor, courage and clarity in Joel Havemann's A Life Shaken: My Personal Encounter with Parkinson's Disease. This book is so authoritative that author Havemann -- a Harvard-educated mathematician and working journalist - could well add the initials "M..D." after his name and get away with it.

Diagnosed with this horrendously frightening disease at age 46, Havemann came to a fork on the road that was his life. What to do? Take the fork that will lead you to a cocoon where you will wither away as Parkinson's ravages your mind, your body and your soul -- your own private world? Or, do you (as the author recites his core beliefs - his religion, he says -- in the final paragraph of his book) fling the gauntlet and shout, "Parkinson's, do your worst. You can't rob me of that."

Havemann has thrown the gauntlet; Parkinson's has not responded. Here's a book you can't put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know but don't want to know
This was by far the most comprehensive, detailed and informative book on Parkinson's disease I have read.
The author is an Early On Set Parkinson's patient and yet, with support, has been able to continue to raise his family and work full-time at his job as Editor of the Los Angeles Times.

He thoroughly investigates medications and other medical proceedures available and their benefits and disadvantages, which I found extremely helpful- certainly more information than I received from any physician.

Further, the author discusses, with amazing frankness, his own physical and mental challenges, which takes it beyond pure information to a story of courage and personal growth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parkinson's by deadline
Joel Havemann brings the journalist's practiced eye for detail, detachment and clarity of expression to the task of understanding, describing and coping with Parkinson's. He also allows his heart to speak and the result is a work that should be especially valuable to those who have themselves have recently received a Parkinson's diagnosis or who have a close relative or friend thus stationed.
The book offers clear and interestingly presented facts about the various drugs, treatments and hopeful research that become an integral part of having Parkinson's, as well as the historical and public policy context in which those elements have evolved in the centuries since the disease was first identified. There is just the right mix of facts, opinion and sometimes barely concealed disgust in Havemann's treatment of these matters.
As valuable as those chapters are, I think many will find Havemann's account of his personal odyssey and that of his family to be the more valuable aspect of his book. He is unstinting in his descriptions of the physical and mental effects of the disease and frank about his occasional failures to deal with those effects as effectively as he would like. He also spares little in telling of his fears about the disease's potential progress and what it could mean for him and his family.
I can't think of a better preparation for confronting the many challenges and crises that accompany the arrival of Parkinson's in the life of an individual and family. A Life Shaken is strongly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent look at PD
Other books about PD scared the heck out of me, but Havemann's sense of humor and indomitable spirit have changed my perspective. I'm not afraid anymore. Thank you Joel. The book is honest and straightforward. He describes what happens to a brain with PD so clearly that I finally understand it! ... Read more

Movement disorders are a group of neurological conditions that are characterised by problems with movement - either unwanted movements, such as tremors, jerks or twitches, or slowness and poverty of movement.Parkinson's disease is the most common of these conditions, and it affects approximately 1% of the population. Its treatment is complex, but effective, and there have been many recent exciting developments in the field.Other movement disorders are less common and extremely diverse, so it is difficult for practitioners to become proficient in diagnosing and treating them all. This book will help neurologists and other clinicians in the recognition and treatment of this important group of disorders.Written in a concise, easy-to-use handbook format, it should appeal to a multidisciplinary audience. The text is accompanied by a DVD with video clips illustrating the different movement disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know in your pocket
I'm a Neurologist currently training in the field of movement disorders. I think this is an excellent book for anybody dealing with this group of patients. The book is very well organized and explanations are concise, clear and didactic. Its main strength is how it helps you with the differential diagnosis by using a symptom guided approach. It provides many very useful tables which allow you to keep in mind common and uncommon conditions when facing an unusual patient. It also includes practical information regarding diagnostic tests and treatment (different options, dosages, common side effects). I was amazed at the vast amount of information contained in such a small book. The DVD with patient videos, although a little bit short, is a great extra. The test is also very coherent, probably reflecting that it is the work of very few authors. In summary I would say it covers everything you need to know to work in a Movement Disorders clinic and a little bit more... And you can carry it in your pocket! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars how to explain Parkinson's Disease for a Child
Do you know anyone who has Parkinson's Disease?Parkinson's Disease (or PD) is a chronic, degenerative disorder that affects the human body's ability to move. The cause is unknown, and there is no cure at present.Colt is a young boy whose mother has been diagnosed with PD.Colt's stuffed panda bear is named Pee Dee, so Colt begins mistreating the panda. However, Pee Dee explains to Colt that he's not the one who's hurting Mommy and makes several suggestions for Colt to assist her, such as drawing funny pictures to make her laugh, putting toys away so she doesn't trip, not pulling on her so that she can walk better, getting her a heating pad when her muscles are tight, helping her look for things, and being quiet when she is sleepy so that she can get the rest which she needs, all accompanied with colorful illustrations by Richard Morgan.
Parkinson's is most commonly associated with people over seventy years of age, but approximately 225,000 people under the age of 50 are also afflicted with the disease in the United States alone. So it is quite possible that many children may be acquainted with someone who has PD--a grandparent or other older relative, an elderly neighbor or friend, or perhaps even a parent.Author Kay Mixson Jenkins developed PD at the age of 34.She is the founder of Parkinson's In The Park, an affiliated chapter of the National Parkinson Foundation. Her son Colt has never known a time when his mother did not have Parkinson's, so she wrote this book for him to explain what PD is in terms that the mind of a child can understand. However, it is a valuable resource to help educate people of all ages about what it's like to live with Parkinson's Disease. There is a page listing Parkinson's organizations with their websites for those who wish further information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well written in terms a youngster can understand.
Sometimes children have the hardest time understanding why someone they love changes so much in a relatively short amount of time. This book teaches young Colt all about PD from a perspective a child can understand more easily. Colt learns a variety of ways to help his mother and keep her safe. I believe in order to achieve maximum effectiveness, an adult should read this book with the child and stop to ask or answer any questions that come to mind. PD is very difficult for families to deal with and children usually need a little bit of extra guidance. This book does an amazing job opening so many opportunities for conversation while explaining the disease in simple terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful treatment of a difficult subject
'Who is Pee Dee?' is a lovely, well illustrated book that takes on a very tough topic --- how to explain complex medical issues to a child. The story is interesting and gives enough info without 'overloading' kids on the subject, and is informative for older readers as well.

'Who is Pee Dee?' also conveys the overall message that a medical condition doesn't DEFINE the person who has it, it's just part of life. It's a great read and wonderful teaching tool for families and educators alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Resource for Children to understand Parkinsons Disease
This book would be very helpful for children who have a family member with Parkinson's disease because it will enable them to see that they are not the reason for that persons pain.

I found the book to be well-written with good illustrations, though it was a little boring and confusing at first. Altogether, this is a good purchase for young children to understand Parkinson's Disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Parkinson's Disease
Nearly everyone has either been touched or knows someone who's been touched by Parkinson's Disease. This book helps children understand PD.It is beautifully written and shows how we deal with this disease through a child's eyes - with the help of his stuffed panda bear. It's adorable and educational.I highly recommend it for anyone with a loved one with PD, but it can also be used as an educational tool for other diseases too.A wonderful story! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Grandma's review.
Being a Parkinson's disease sufferer, I found the book to be very true.

A very refreshing look at Parkinson's, through the eyes of children.I am a grandma and my grandchildren are very attentive and help me a lot. They haven't all read the bok yet, but intend to very soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read! Definitely an effective powerful punch against PD.
My daughter age 9, cherishes this book like no other. Why? I'm certain it's because she no longer needs to ask, why? She now has an understanding beyond the adults I come in contact with, and being an innocent child, she doesn't doubt the rude effects of PD. Thank you Rasheda for having the Love necessary for this advocacy and fight.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a gift of insight and knowledge
When I was disgnosed with Parkison's disease 11 years ago, the diagnosing neurologist made a comparison that people might mistake Parkinson's for dementia. It has taken me a long time to rid myself of that image.I found that the Parkinson's library at LSUSHCS (Louisiana State University at Shreveport's Health Scienced Center) had purchased I'll Hold Your Hand So You Won't Fall:A Child's Guide to Parkinson's disease by Rasheeda Ali, I couldn't reserve it fast enough. This amazing work by this amazing and courageous daughter was just what I had been searching for to send to my two grandsons, who live outside of Boston (I live in Texas) and whom I see once or twice a year, because of the distance.I wanted them to understand Grampy's struggle and to not be afraid of him if he acts strangely or can't keep up with their boundless seven and nine year-old energy.I've not seen them since I purchased the book and mailed it to them, but I have every confidence that my next visit will be a 'comfortable' and enjoyable one with, hopefully some questions for Grampy about Parkinson's disease upon which they and I can establish common ground.

Thank you, Rasheeda, for this grand gift designed to provide knowledge and put a 'face" to Parkinson's disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
I found this book to be very helpful because my husband has Parkinson's disease and it has helpt my daughter understand what is going on with him.
This book anwsered most of her questions

5-0 out of 5 stars a Great Idea
I believe this book was great idea to help our kids understand their elders, and I hope that the same idea can be used to write similar books about other terminal diseases such as Alzheimer's.

I also think this book should be made available in primary school libraries, to make it more accessible to all children wither any of their relatives have PD or not, because I believe that such information should be known by everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book.
Heroes are never made. Courage comes from fear of the unknown. We try to live life and make each day count. These are but a few of the clichés that I've heard when people talk about those who fight life threateningillnesses, yet this can not begin to describe this book.

Packed into this150 page book is more than the life story of someone who has been strickenwith an illness in the prime of life, it is an inspiration to everyone. Thedealing with Parkinson's is often hard and troubling and in this storyyou'll see what it takes to be strong in the face of this illness.

Thestory is happy, moving, sad, joyful and even angry at times and each of thefeelings and emotions gives you a sense of realism thought out the life ofSandi Gordon. Gordon shows you what courage and faith is all about.

Theemotion throughout the entire book is what kept me reading from cover tocover. The dealing that Gordon goes through despite the way the diseasetakes over impressed me. Congratulation on an excellent book BrandenPublishing! ... Read more
