5-0 out of 5 stars THE serious astrology beginner book
A definitely good introductory book for anyone considering a serious study of astrology. It grounds the reader by both validating astrology as a form of universal understanding and providing a comprehensive and simple four element explination. This will make understanding the subsequent elements and points in astrological interpretation much easier. It has a "general to specific" approach which aids in making accurate interpretations. This is not a book for the lightly interested or if you prefer the "magazine column" sort of astrology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight into the energetic structure of astrology.
Insight into the energetic structure of astorlogy. If you only read five books on astrology, this should be one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
You can learn a lot by reading this book especially if you are into Psychology.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Energy Approach.....
I have started reading this book and have difficulty putting it down. This book definitely provides some deeper insight into an aspect of personality and can provide info into relationships and why they work or vice versa.........

Just buy the book, you will have no regrets.

5-0 out of 5 stars Astrology: an Art that is "a tool for promoting self-knowledge"
The book "Astrology, Psychology and the Four Elements" by Stephen Arroyo is an interesting viewpoint of astrology that emphasizes an individual's psychological make-up from an astrological perspective.Published in 1975, Mr. Arroyo divided the book into two parts. The first part he entitled "Astrology & Psychology", which contains eight chapters. The second part he entitled "The Four Elements: An Energy Approach to Interpreting Birth Charts", which also contains eight chapters (numbered from nine to sixteen). What differentiates this book from other typical astrology books is that it is not merely a look-up table for trying to interpret a person's birth chart. In the first part, Mr. Arroyo compares the works of various psychologists (such C. G. Jung, Sigmund Freud and O. Hobart Mowrer), physicians (such as Alexander Ruperti), philosophers (such as L. L. White, Hans Stossel, Irving F. Laucks and Pascal), biologists (such as Père Tielhard de Chardin) and writers (such as Goethe) with various astrologers (such as Dane Rudhyar, David Hamblin and Marc E. Jones), mythological experts (such as Joseph Campbell) and people claiming clairvoyant abilities (such as Edgar Cayce). From these (and many others whom I have not named), Mr. Arroyo creates a synthesis to describe a more humanistic and holistic approach to both psychology and astrology, and encourages psychological counselors interested in astrology to utilize tools from astrology to assist in understand their patients. He also lays the foundation for viewing the zodiacal signs with regard to the seasons of the year in which they fall with their corresponding psychological meanings.

In the second part, Mr. Arroyo describes various astrological components, such as the signs of the zodiac (from a more elemental perspective), the planets (from an "energy regulator" perspective) and the houses. He emphasizes that a simple mechanistic approach of chart interpretation often falls short when the impact of the elements themselves are not fully taken into account, as well as not taking into account how particular individuals may make decisions that overcome what might otherwise may be misinterpreted as "difficult" aspects, when they might actually be good. His descriptions of the elements were well thought out, as were his discussions of elemental imbalances. In the final two chapters, he touches briefly on chart comparisons between people and the houses.

Overall, I found "Astrology, Psychology and the Four Elements" to be a very interesting read.I rate the book with 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning some basics about astrology. ... Read more

Product Description
Originally published in 1980, the first edition of THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE PSYCHIC, coauthored by David Marks and the late Richard Kammann, received rave reviews and quickly became a benchmark for skeptical analysis of the field of parapsychology.

This edition, completely updated and expanded by David Marks, is a thorough refutation of the claims of serious parapsychologists such as Russell Targ, Harold Puthoff, Edwin C. May, the late Charles Honorton, Rupert Sheldrake, and Jessica Utts, including exciting new material concerning the major paranormal claims of the twentieth century.

After twenty-five years devoted to intense studies of Uri Geller, remote viewing, the ganzfeld, and other paranormal claims--and in spite of an insatiable public appetite for all things supernatural--Marks finds that the evidence for psychic phenomena hasn't changed all that much, nor has its credibility.

Included in this fascinating book is a discussion of why so many people today are prone to accept the reality of psychic phenomena, astrology, UFOs, palmistry, biorhythms, dowsing, and other popular beliefs. Not just a book for professionals in the social sciences, this second edition of THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE PSYCHIC will appeal to anyone interested in the investigation of psychic claims. ... Dear all,
Don't be fooled by the one-sidedness of books like this.To hear the best arguments presented by the supporters of Parapsychology, check out my acclaimed article "Debunking Pseudo-Skeptical Arguments Against Paranormal and Psychic Phenomena" which refutes 30 of these pseudo-skeptics' claims point-by-point with reason, logic, and facts.[...]
Hope it helps all you truth seekers out there.

1-0 out of 5 stars "You'll find what you desire"
I agree with the reviewer who called it a "bogus treatise." I read this book after personally witnessing a remote viewing experiment (documented on my website). I did not read the whole book, only chapters 1-7 and 16 (I wasn't interested in debunking Uri Geller). Chapter 3 begins with a Robert Browning quote "...you'll find what you desire", I assume targeted at "believers" in the paranormal. But it equally applies to the authors. In their "replication" of Targ's remote viewing experiments the authors selected as the viewers a few students and a housewife who "believed themselves to be psychic to some degree." Of course, they did not believe in the existence of the phenomena they were testing -- otherwise they might have allowed themselves to make the assumption that it might require someone who practices. If you were testing "exceptional athletic abilities" would you select a subject who played softball once a year and "believed he was athletic to some degree" or would you select a professional athlete? For remote viewing, you could select members of the Hawaii Remote Viewers' Guild, for example.Their intent was not to study the phenomena using an open-minded scientific approach, but to "debunk" it - in the typical sarcastic style.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Bogus Treatise
Like most skeptics, Kammann and Marks pretend objectivity, when their real mission is to debunk every aspect of the field of parapsychology. For instance, they have zero belief on any level in the possibility of such things as telepathy and remote viewing. For them, it is not possible, so they set out to simply prove this assumption. Yet, simple physics allows for the possibility of some form of thought transference. Just as energy in the form of thoughts transfers from one part of the brain to another part via the neurotransmitters, why wouldn't it be possible for the corresponding molecular frequency to be picked up by another brain? The evidence for telepathy between twins or during dreams is overwhelming, but they ignore it all. See, for instance, Dream Telepathy by Ulmann, Krippner and Vaughan. So, in their attempts to pretend objectivity, Marks and Kammann really set out with the key goal of trying to debunk Uri Geller. They use as their proofphotographs that are so blurred that it is impossible to see what the photographs are of, yet these, they assert "prove" that Geller is a fake. It is shameful. Try reading Charles Panati's The Geller Papers if you want the truth about how Mr. Geller did in physics laboratories across the globe. The problem with these types of skeptics is that they live in the mutual admiration society world without realizing that they are not true skeptics but rather narrow thinkers who wall off any chance of discovering anything of value by chanting Groucho Marx' famous credo: "What ever it is, I'm against it!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and funny too
I agree with another reviewer that this book is useful even for the staunch believer in ESP. It is a very entertaining reading which is not often the case (I found Martin Gardner`s books rather boring and sometimes arrogant). The two authors are never arrogant. I particularly loved the last chapters that show how common "non-scientific" thinking is among said scientific communities. He gives some examples then concerning psychiatry and medicine. If you remember the Uri Geller craze you will enjoy the opening chapters also.

5-0 out of 5 stars A critical look at psychic phenomena and human nature
If you're a firm believer in psychic abilities, you may find this book's skeptical stance to be a little disheartening.Read it anyway! It's loaded with useful and fascinating information.

Psychology of the Psychic is a fair and honest look at mentalists, psychics, clairvoyants, "spoonbenders", and others who claim paranormal talents.

Of particular interest to me were the techniques that showmen and charlatans use to convince others of their abilities, and how those techniques may be inadvertently used by those who believe they have experienced psychic phenomena.

If you're a believer, this book will allow you to separate the wheat from the chaff, and identify the outright frauds.

If you're a non-believer, this book will show you why so many people have faith in the paranormal, and will give you lots of ammunition when Aunt Bertha tells you about the marvelous new psychic she's been consulting (and handing over her checkbook to).

A terrific, thorough book, with solid research presented in an easy-to-read and enjoyable manner. ... Read more

Product Description
Psychic and other exceptional experiences are surprisingly common but opinions as to their causes vary widely. Can tricks of the mind such as hallucinations, mistaken perception and errors of judgement explain such phenomena or does some yet to be understood non-sensory means of communication come into play?

In Parapsychology, leading researchers from both the UK and the USA combine their expertise to form a lucid account of research into the science of psychic experience. Beginning with an introduction to the methodology, Parapsychology addresses topics including coincidence, telepathy, precognition, psychokinesis, healing, apparitions, reincarnation and out-of-body experiences. Each chapter describes the phenomenon, outlines the main lines of research and discusses the merits of possible explanations for such anomalies of cognitive function. Extensive suggestions for relevant further reading on each individual subject are provided, along with a detailed glossary of terms.

Parapsychology provides an accessible and succinct overview of the research and current thinking on the subject of psychic and allied experiences. This balanced account of work in this fascinating area will be of great interest to students and researchers in psychology as well as anyone with an interest in the field. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Textbook Approach
This is a good overview and introduction to the field of parapsychology. If you're not into textbook learning and reading, you'll probably find this a pretty good challenge to finish. The book has some basic divisions according to generalized subject matter, beginning with an introduction to methodology and the sceptics. It then moves on through more specific aspects of parapsychology such as different types of cognition, remote viewing, out of body experiences, ghosts, etc. While there is some discussion of statistical studies in the first half of the book, the latter half becomes more theoretical and background information on the designated subjects. This is probably due to the increased difficulty of finding statistical analyses as it pertains to subjects like apparitions and reincarnation.

This is a book that is likely to be seen in an introductory course on parapsychology and not something the lay person would necessarily start with. As such, the text is full of information, but is fairly dry, as textbooks usually are. However, it is a good, fairly thorough introduction to many aspects of the field of parapsychology, though today's ghost hunters would probably grow bored with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise overview of Parapsychology
I gave this book 4 stars because it was too concise. This book is aconcise overview of the field of parapsychology.I would not recommend this book as a good introduction to the field since it's not comprehensive or too detailed.Although the information is concise, the book still gets some good and fair points across like on ESP, NDEs, OBEs, etc.Another good thing about this book is that it mentions a lot of sources or references to refer to that pertains to the information in this book.I found that good so that I know the source for the ideas, explanations, or theories and that I can read up more on it from the if I need to.Nonetheless, I have still found no strong conclusive proof for any paranormal phenomena. The strongest case this book or parapsychology overall has as scientific evidence is for ESP through the Ganzfeld experiments.Even in this experiment the results are low but still above chance which for now may just mean that ESP is a weak ability in humans or a not so active one.I would recommend this book as just an additional overview on parapsychology but I would suggest to look elsewhere if you're looking for a comprehensive introductory overview of parapsychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to parapsychology
This book provides a concise overview of the field of parapsychology, i.e. the scientific study of exceptional experiences. All eighteen authors have legitimate academic or professional credentials and many have university affiliations; the volume reads more like a textbook than a new age primer. The end of chapter summaries, conclusions, and references are a valuable resource.

My interest in this field stems from readings related to religion and mysticism.I wanted to see if there was scientific evidence that supported concepts such as the existence of a mind or soul that was separate from the body, life after death, reincarnation, etc. As I interpret the large number of studies in this book, the answer is a highly qualified maybe.

One of the consistent finding across numerous experimental studies of different types (e.g. extrasensory perception, animal psi, healing, micro-psychokinesis, etc.) is that there is a small but undeniable "psi" effect, i.e. an effect that can not be attributed to what are traditionally thought of as "natural" causes.Though many potential explanations are offered, they remain highly speculative at this point.

In addition to controlled experiments, there are many field studies, observational reports, and collections of anecdotes that utilize a methodology more similar to cultural anthropology than experimental psychology.Examples include investigations of apparitions, out-of-body experiences, near death experiences, precognition, and investigations of possible reincarnation.Frankly, I found these investigations more interesting than those from the laboratory and one must wonder if the very nature of significant psi events places them beyond the reach of experimental methods.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in an open minded, scientific introduction to parapsychology. Those who are looking for a detailed study of a narrow aspect of parapsychology or those seeking justification for new age beliefs will be disappointed. What the book does offer is evidence that there is an enormous data set within parapsychology that has not be explained by natural means. This opens the door to alternate explanations and speculations, the fertile ground for both the scientific and religious imagination.

After more than a century of mounting experimental evidence that parapsychological (PSI) phenomena are fact, not fantasy, researchers have been frustrated by the lack of a central model that ties all the facts together. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Clear Thinking
For those of us who know that extra-sensory perceptions (or cognitions) and other forms of "psi" are real, the obvious next step in our quest for deeper understanding of metaphysics is to find workable models.Keith Chandler's book PSI is a tour de force of insight into the inner workings of phenomena such as telepathy, precognition, clairvoyance, and psychokinesis as it presents a thoughtful and inspired model of reality that includes these "psi" phenomena.

Chandler presents the notion that remembering within the field of Cosmic Mind could well be the key to learning how it is possible for people to know what's going on in locations geographically far away, or off in the distant future. While Chandler admits to limited experience with some of the phenomena he includes in PSI (such as future memory), he nonetheless maintains an open mind and a keen eye to correlating personal and anecdotal experiences with viable scientific theories and experimental results.

Written in the style of an erudite professor and packed with eye-opening references to current scientific research (from REM sleep to the honeybee's "wiggle dance" and remote viewing), PSI takes the reader to a place of epiphany where for at least one shining moment -- it all makes sense.I highly recommend this book to anyone who genuinely wishes to consider new models of reality that include "psi" phenomena. ... Product Description
Psychic Politics is the result of Jane Roberts's search for the rules that govern our inner lives-the links between our daily, subjective experience and the greater Reality that nourishes all of our existence. This is not only her most challenging book, but a very personal investigation in which the sources of dream and myth, and the creative wellsprings of sex and spirituality, appear in their full and breathtaking relationship to daily life.

And here for the first time, Roberts introduces three concepts that are key to understanding her entire body of work: the library, a super-real storehouse of "probably" books that tell of the paths human consciousness has not yet taken; counterparts, simultaneous incarnations living on earth today so as to broaden the fabric of their individual soul's experience; and the codicils, an alternative set of rules for human existence that could transform the framework of our entire civilization. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Another one that requires more than one read....
I initially purchased Psychic Politics because it was being mentioned so much in the book I was currently reading and my curiosity was aroused.Having read Oversoul Seven Trilogy (which is 5 star book!) I thought it would be nice to read others that Jane personally had produced.Brought through in an altered state of consciousness from her visits to the library its a definite "read again". Up until now "The Nature of Personal Reality" was the only book I had flagged pages to return to - Psychic Politics is now my second. Not initially understandingthe choice of title, it all falls into place.I enjoyed getting to know Jane through this book and I feel the information contained within it is invaluable to the human race.I hope your curiosity is aroused enough to purchase it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jane at her best
I've read the Seth books and learned much from them, but some of the Jane books are even better. Seth can be tedious in comparison to Psychic Politics. I recommend The Seth Material, Seth Dreams..., Adventures in Consciousness and Psychic Politics, more or less in that order (although Seth Dreams was published much later). Adventures and Psychic Politics apply Seth/Jane's ideas to real life events in Jane's life, described in a vivid way that gives these books an added dimension, making them more immediately "real" and a true pleasure to read.
Thematically, I would summarize the ideas in this book as a system in which one learns to view the "aspects" of the psyche independently of any pre-conceived "frames" such as religious dogma. This approach is so profound and so sane that most belief systems seem trite in comparison. Jane is at her most enlightened here. I strongly recommend this book and the ones that lead up to it; read this after Adventures in Conscoiusness to get the most out of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Must" reading for students of metaphysics and spirituality.
Psychic Politics: An Aspect Psychology Book focuses on the links betweenordinary, everyday life and the greater Reality that nourishes allexistence. The late Jane Roberts (1929-1984), the author of the Seth books, was considered to be one of the foremost psychics of our times and inPsychic Politics introduces three concepts that are key to understandingthe entire body of her literary and metaphysical work: the library (asuper-real storehouse of "probable" books that tell of the pathshuman consciousness has not yet taken); Counterparts (simultaneousincarnations living on earth today so as to broaden the fabric of theirindividual soul's experience); and the codicils (an alternate set of rulesfor human existence that have the capacity to transform the framework ofhuman civilization. Psychic Politics is "must" reading forstudents of metaphysics, psychology, and human spirituality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jane's Usual Excellent Stuff
This is a "Jane" book as opposed to a "Seth" book; itdovetails very well with Vols 1 and 2 of "Unknown Reality: A SethBook".Much of the book presumes a prior reading of "Adventuresof Consciousness" (another "Jane" book) so I would suggestyou read that one first.

I find this particular "Jane"book very helpful in expounding on some of the things Seth discusses in"Unknown Reality". ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating But Sometimes Difficult
I read this book after reading Synchronicity: An Acausal Connecting Principle which I highly enjoyed. Psychology and the Occult is along the same lines as Synchronicity - it is the rare exploration of supernatural phenomenon by a professional psychiatrist. I found this book to be really intriguing - although be warned - it is a bit difficult and may take some time to get through, even though it is a relatively short book at under 160 pages of content. The author's professional discipline when approaching the subject, and open-mindedness is interesting. His assessment of events seems fair and he really delves into some strange occurrences. I would have given this book a perfect score if it was presented in a more approachable manner - although it is still very much worth reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carl Jung on Psychology and the Occult.
_Psychology and the Occult_ from the Collected Works of Swiss psychoanalyst Carl Jung, published as part of the Bollingen Series of Princeton University Press, and translated by R. F. C. Hull, contains several important essays and lectures by Jung on the occult and parapsychology.Carl Jung, who was to come under the influence of Freud, maintained an interest in the occult throughout his life, beginning in his young adulthood.Jung, who wrote in a letter to Freud that he "dabbled in spookery", set out on a lifelong course to explain the occult and the "spirit world" in terms of the unconscious. While Jung may have believed in the reality of spirits, his writings take a more agnostic scientific/rationalist position as to their reality, while at the same time attempting to explain occult and spiritualistic phenomena in terms of the unconscious.Jung is perhaps most famous for his notion of the collective unconscious, the source of all inherited ancestral memories, and even within his dissertation for his medical doctorate the idea of the collective unconscious may be present.Indeed, Jung writes, "I waded through the occult literature so far as it pertained to this subject [the visions of Miss S. W.], and discovered a wealth of parallels with our gnostic system, dating from different centuries, but scattered about in all kinds of works, most of them quite inaccessible to the patient."Alternatively, at least initially Jung was to explain many of the statements of mediums in terms of hysteria and cryptomnesia (the coming into consciousness of unrecognized memory images). To understand Jung's fascination with the occult and spiritualism, one really must understand the sort of revival occultism and mysticism was undergoing at the time in continental Europe and America. The Romantic movement was underway and the writings of the Swedish seer, Swedenborg, were popular. In addition, a reaction was occurring against materialism, and this reaction provoked the sort of romanticism found behind spiritualism.Scientific investigations of occult phenomena were also sought as part of the Society for Psychical Research and research into the phenomena of parapsychology were being conducted at Duke University. In addition, new discoveries in theoretical physics regarding the nature of space and time, the dimensionality of the universe, and quantum phenomena were challenging preconceived notions. It is among this milieu that Carl Jung's ideas on the occult were to arise and have their greatest impact.

The following items appear reprinted in this book:

"Foreword to Jung:"Phenomens Occultes""(1939)-A brief foreword relating Jung's theories on the occult and immortality.

"On the Psychology and Pathology of So-Called Occult Phenomena"(1902)-This is Jung's dissertation for his medical doctorate written while he was at the Burgholzli. In this dissertation, Jung explains the role of hysteria and epilepsy (very similar) in the production of occult phenomena. He begins by noting several instances of hysteria and epilepsy in women. Then, he turns to the case of a girl, Miss S. W., who served as a medium (her personality being taken over by that of her grandfather and a spirit named Ivenes). This girl presented an elaborate metaphysical system, which Jung copied down.Jung argues that this girl was a hysteric and explains some of the phenomena surrounding this girl.He notes the reality of multiple personalities, somnambulistic states, and emphasizes hypnosis as a means to understanding altered states of consciousness. In particular, he notes the fact that small tremors are not uncommon in the hands and that these tremors often can produce writing and drawings which relate to what is going on in the mind.Jung also explains much of what this girl says as a product of cryptomnesia.Jung notes the similarity of her case to the case of the Seeress of Prevorst (made famous by Justinus Kerner).Jung also notes how much of what she said appears to be unconsciously plagiarized (cryptomnesia) from the book _From India to the Planet Mars_ of Flournoy. To illustrate how this occurs Jung produces two pieces of writing, one from Nietzsche's _Thus Spoke Zarathustra_ and the second from Kerner's _Clairvoyant of Prevorst_ and shows the great similarity. He contends this is an instance of cryptomnesia.Jung ends by noting how this girl's worldview shares much similarity with that found in gnostic and occult literature, foreshadowing the collective unconscious.

"On Spiritualistic Phenomena"(1905)-This is a lecture given by Jung.Jung notes the history of spiritualism which grew as an opposition movement to materialism.Jung explains the role of the Fox sisters, romantic poets, Swedenborg, Kant, Johann Josef von Gorres, Katherina Emmerich, and Mesmer within this movement.Jung quotes extensively from Kant's book on Swedenborg, _Dreams of a Spirit-Seer_ as well as from a writing by Wiliam Crookes.

"The Psychological Foundations of Belief in Spirits"(1920)-Jung explains belief in spirits among both primitives and moderns such as Crookes, Myers, Wallace, and Zollner.Jung emphasizes the role of the archetypes of the collective unconscious.

"The Soul and Death"(1934)-Jung explains the soul, death, and the fear of death.Jung notes the role of religion and explains that it is the rationalist position which is neurotic towards death. That is, the rationalist seeks to deny death by claiming it is simply an end and not something more.

"Psychology and Spiritualism"(1948)-This is Jung's foreword to a book by Stewart Edward White in which he notes the role of "Invisibles", as well as the role of modern physics in providing a possible explanation for parapsychological phenomena.

"Foreword to Moser:"Spuk:Irrglaube Oder Wahrglaube""(1950)-Jung's foreword to a book by Fanny Moser in which he attempts to explain a haunting that he experienced in terms of unconscious manifestation.

"Foreword to Jaffe:"Apparitions and Precognition""(1958)-Jung's foreword to a book by Aniela Jaffe about fantastic tales of superstition, mentioning the stories of E. T. A. Hoffmann.

"The Future of Parapsychology"(1963)-Jung's answers to a questionnaire regarding the future of parapsychology to be printed in a journal. This is particularly interesting because it notes Jung's thoughts on the possibility of scientific investigation of the occult.

This book provides a fascinating look into the mind of Carl Jung and his thinking regarding the occult. It is sure to intrigue those who hope for a life beyond death and particularly those who believe that psychology has something to say about occult phenomena. For those who believe in the reality of the supernatural, this book is certain to provide some solace.

5-0 out of 5 stars Supernatural Reverie
The occult phenomenon that Jung considers is mostly the spiritualism and seances that were popular at the turn of the 20th century. Jung describes how some mediums were found to be unconsciously moving objects via automatic movements, as in table turning, "if a fairly heavy object is moving, the muscular tension is immediately apparent".

I've been very impressed by how relevant Jung's observations about the psyche are to my inner life. Unfortunately Jung has fallen out of favor and the current attitude towards the unconscious is to suppress it and fear it. Although I read a lot of books, I have encountered few references to supernatural reverie, entrancing dreams, or other indications of a profound connection to the life of the psyche. You have to read 19th century Romantic poets to find the right sensibilities.

There were two passages in this book that I found noteworthy; "When a complex of the collective unconscious becomes associated with the ego it is felt as strange, uncanny, and at the same time fascinating. At all events the conscious mind falls under its spell." This is a good description of a supernatural reverie when the soul seems to fall under the spell of some eerie recollection or a fascinating, poetic vision. Another accurate description is the following passage, "An integral component of any nocturnal, numinous experience is the diming of consciousness, the feeling that one is in the grip of something greater than oneself, a most singular feeling which one willy-nilly hoards up as a secret treasure. This is the purpose of the experiece - to make us feel the overpowering presence of a mystery."The most interesting point made here is that a numinous experience is treasured, profoundly mysterious, and kept to oneself. Jung genuinely valued the unconscious. ... Read more

Beloff is one of the leading proponents of mind-body dualism (i.e., the theory that mind may exist independent of the body) and has had a long and distinguished career. If you aren't familiar with him, check out his own website. He is a serious academic and this is a serious work aimed at general readers. It is a short but excellent survey of parapsychology from a sympathetic point of view, and I found it very worthwhile even though I have read widely in this field. ... From the author: Statistical evidence was sought that an anomalous effect might be involved in the ancient Chinese system of divination known as the I Ching. The I Ching user throws 3 coins 6 times, to generate 1 of 64 possible 6-line symbols (or hexagrams) and then consults the associated divinatory reading. Initial studies by Storm and Thalbourne (1998-1999, 2001a) suggest that first-hexagram outcomes can be determined in advance of generating the hexagram to a significant degree above MCE. In the present study, it was theorized that hexagram targeting accords with a person's time perspective. Individuals who have a present time perspective (PTP) focus on immediate events and those who have a future time perspective (FFP) focus on the future. Because intuitive types are said to be future-oriented, it was hypothesized that FTP-types are more intuitive than PTP-types. It was also hypothesized that predicted hexagram outcomes are above chance; there is a relationship between pro attitude and hexagram hitting; and intuition predicts hexagram outcomes. In a sample of mostly university students (N = 200), FTP-types were not more intuitive than PTP-types. Hit-rates were above chance on second-hexagram hitting only (not significantly). PTP-types did hit more often on first hexagrams (29%) compared to FTP-types (20%), whereas FTP-types did hit more often on second hexagrams (36%) compared to PTP-types (31%), but the differences were not significant. Intuition scores did not predict hexagram outcomes. Other significant effects were found.
